They can sign Kawhii to a new contract. However, it looks like Kawhii has no interest in playing for Toronto.

I think they can only offer 3 years and limited raises. It would be subject to the same limitations of an extend and trade. Someone can pull up the relevant part of the salary cap FAQ if needed (I have to go for now) but the Cavs were in a similar position four years ago with Kevin Love. They couldn't extend him until the end of the season or whatever it was.

He's an elite scorer and can guard Lebron/Durant as well as anyone in the league. Those would be the main reasons.

A lot of people either rank him as the second best or third best player in the entire NBA, Eve.

And it went so well for him last season. Exactly where did they wind up in the payoffs?

Not worth it for a diva.

No, the Raptors cannot extend Kawhi right now. They have to ride it out. More info here: http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q95

Quote:
95. Can a player be given an extension and traded at the same time?
Similar to a sign-and-trade arrangement (see question number 92), a team may sign an eligible player to an extension (see question number 58) and immediately trade him to another team. Such an "extend-and-trade" is limited to three seasons, which include any seasons remaining on the player's current contract1. The salary in the first season of the extension can have a 5% raise over the last season of the existing contract, and subsequent raises are limited to 5% of the salary in the first season of the extension. The 5% limit also applies to both likely and unlikely bonuses.

A player cannot be traded in an extend-and-trade after the season (for example, on draft day) in the last season of his contract, or in any season that might be the last season due to an option or ETO.

Since an extend-and-trade has greater limits than a regular extension (three seasons and 5% raises vs. four seasons and 8% raises), the rules prevent teams from circumventing these limits by extending and trading the player in separate transactions. If a team extends a player beyond the limits of an extend-and-trade (for example, if they sign a player to a four-year extension), they can't trade the player for six months. Conversely, a team cannot extend a player it receives in trade for six months, if the extension exceeds the limits of an extend-and-trade2.

Extend-and-trade transactions are rare. To date they have only been used for Kevin Garnett (traded from Minnesota to Boston in 2007) and Carmelo Anthony (traded from Denver to New York in 2011).

A rookie scale contract (see question number 47) can be extended and traded in an extend-and-trade transaction, although there is no benefit to doing so. A rookie scale extension can be signed immediately after the player is traded (such as with James Harden's trade to the Rockets in 2012), and a rookie scale extension (see question number 58) can be much larger than the extension allowed through an extend-and-trade.

1 The current season counts as one full year, even if the extension is signed as late as June 30. So if a contract is extended on June 30 with one full season remaining, only one new season can be added to the contract with an extend-and-trade.
2 This does not apply to extensions of rookie scale contracts. For example, the Oklahoma City Thunder traded James Harden to the Houston Rockets on October 27, 2012, and the Rockets signed him to an extension four days later.

Rules prevent circumventing this in separate transactions (e.g. extend and then trade or trade and then extend.)

kawhi to lakers next year then? Can he be traded mid-year with the rule you mentioned, or is it just to limit moves relatively back to back?

I understand the sentiment-- I really do, but if you don't want to put up with divas then it's going to be hard to root for any team in the NBA.

This is the league where the reigning Finals MVP, as well as a high level team executive, are alike in the sense that they both used fake Twitter accounts to attack people who had negative opinions of them.

I'm pretty sure he could be traded to the Lakers but still not extended. You can see in that cbafaq (excellent resource btw), that even though it is well-written and to the point, it is still extremely long because the NBA trade and salary cap rules are so convoluted and ridiculous.

My opinion is basically, those who are paid to know these things (e.g. NBA media or front office) really should. Me, I'm more of a casual NBA fan and don't care to spend a week studying the salary cap.

Hopefully someone else can answer with more certainty and detail.

The more I think of this, the more I think Kawhi/LA/TOR orchestrated this ... Toronto is the middle man who will flip him to LA

Don't tell me "no." I was talking about when his contract is up. They have just as much of an opportunity to sign him as anyone else. The sticking point is that it appears he doesn't want to play in Toronto.

I think there is a (six month) time-frame on an extension after a trade, and that's mostly to prevent teams from getting around the salary cap. So you can't trade a player into some tight cap-space, and then immediately re-sign him for more. (They want you to do a sign-and-trade instead) But I don't think that precludes him from signing an extension later in the year, after that 6-month or whatever time-span occurs. The Raps should still own the Free Agent rights on him.

I haven’t followed the nba for 20 - 25 years now ... not even following it hardly at all ... i do know this ...

Magic got Lebron to LA for what i believe is three reasons ...

1. to work with Magic and be in LA with all the opportunity it brings ...

2. MAGIC KNOWS EVERYONE out there and u will have an automatic in with the right folks in whatever direction u want to go outside hoops ...

3. There not done building yet ..

Well ... next year it will be an EVEN EASIER SELL FOR MAGIC ...

U can add a #4 and put it either at #1 or #2 on the list ....

- he can now sell playing with the King ...

Next year LA will be right there with Golden State if not the favs ...

Of course they can re-sign him when his contract his up. Go back and read-- that much was never in dispute.

The whole point is that it's ridiculous that teams have to make a huge investment in young players/picks and then are not allowed to extend those players for six months or a season or whatever it is. The teams should be able to make a trade and then do an extension if both sides agree to it. Nobody wants to make a significant investment in a trade only to see that player walk after one season.

I'm tired of trying to answer your questions in a helpful manner only to have you get indignant and snotty. I don't care about the rule. It doesn't matter. Kawhii doesn't want to play in Toronto. I'll know better than to provide information the next time you ask a question because this is the third time you've done this.

Carmelo Anthony trade grades: Thunder win big; Hawks, 76ers accomplish their goals - CBSSports.com
https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/carme...sh-their-goals/

e knew it was only a matter of time, but on Thursday the Oklahoma City Thunder finally parted ways with Carmelo Anthony. According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Thunder, Hawks and 76ers will complete a trade sending Anthony to Atlanta, however he will not play for them next season. The Hawks will buy out and waive Anthony, allowing him to join another team, with the Rockets as the reported front-runner.

It was a relatively complicated deal with the third team coming in, but each team accomplished something through the trade. Here's a quick recap of the moves, followed by grades for each team.

Oklahoma City trade grade: A
OKC wasn't in an easy position here. There were only a handful of teams with the cap space to absorb Anthony's $27.9 million contract for next season in a deal, and Atlanta emerged as the prime suitor. The Thunder had to include a future first-round pick (lottery protected) in order to facilitate the trade, but they got a consolation prize in 24-year-old point guard Schroder, who Atlanta desperately wanted to unload after drafting Trae Young as the point guard of the future in June. There are questions about Schroder's work ethic, attitude, defense, and ability to run a team, so it's likely going to take some work for OKC to incorporate him into their system. But the Thunder have gotten little production out of their backup point guards in the Russell Westbrook era, and Schroder certainly has the talent to become a threat off the bench. He can also play together with Westbrook at times when OKC is looking for more backcourt offense.

The Thunder also acquire Luwawu-Cabarrot, a long, 6-foot-6 wing who saw limited playing time for the Sixers after they picked up Marco Belinelli toward the end of last season. He may not set the world on fire, but he'll give Oklahoma city a versatile body to insert against wing-heavy competition, and if he can become more consistent with his 3-point shot (32 percent for his career), he could earn a spot in the rotation.

By far the biggest win in this deal for the Thunder, however, is getting rid of Anthony. Not only will the move save the team a reported $73 million in salary and luxury tax next season, but it will also free the Thunder of an aging, ball-dominant poor defender, who clearly did not fit and appeared unwilling to adjust his game. That alone would be worth an "A," but getting a couple of potentially useful pieces back (even if they turn out to be bad) only sweetens the deal.

Atlanta trade grade: B+
The Hawks are ready to head in a new direction under general manager Travis Schlenk and new coach Lloyd Pierce, and they needed to get rid of Schroder to do that. Mission accomplished. They also got a future first-rounder out of the deal, which will convey as long as the Thunder continue to make the playoffs, which they should. As we've seen, even a post-lottery pick can be incredibly useful in the right hands.

Atlanta also picked up Justin Anderson, a tough, 6-6 wing capable of guarding multiple positions and occasionally getting hot from the 3-point line. He didn't get much playing time for the Sixers after coming over during the 2016-17 season, but he could carve out a spot in the rotation for the Hawks, who aren't exactly prioritizing winning this season.

The only disappointment from this deal is that they couldn't get more for Muscala, a prototypical stretch-four on a team-friendly, expiring deal. But it was clear that the top priorities were getting Schroder out of the mix and picking up a decent draft pick, both of which they did.

Philadelphia trade grade: B-
The Sixers' stretch-four cupboard was barren after Ersan Ilyasova took a generous offer from the Milwaukee Bucks and Nemanja Bjelica backed out of his agreed-upon deal to stay in Europe (now he might join the Kings, but that's beside the point). They saw Muscala available and pounced, but they had to get rid of two young, versatile wings to do it.

Not that Anderson and Luwawu-Cabarrot were expected to earn much time this season, but it never hurts to have extra multi-position wings during the slog of an 82-game season. Muscala will fill a much-needed role in Philly, but he's a consolation prize in the stretch-four sweepstakes.

I kinda thought the same.

The Hawks evidently really wanted to open the door for Young, and really wanted an extra 1st rounder.

Thanks for the insight and explanation. I still think the NBA rules could/should be tweaked some (a lot) but this does make some sense.

How do you think he'll feel about being Westbrook's backup?

What would be the point of that trade for the Cavaliers?

I think they'll easily find a way to have them play together some as well. Donovan is good with guard play ... I bet they're going to ease Westbrook off the ball a bit now (I know, easier said than done)

Yeah, I think the Kyrie thing had more to do with the Cavs giving him that extension and saying it was going to be his team and then boom, in comes Lebron and takes over everything.

He's been quite chummy with Kyrie since the trade. I don't think Kyrie held any ill will towards Lebron. He, like Lebron, accomplished the ultimate goal in Cleveland, it wasn't going to work again with our cap situation, with GS stockpiling all stars and other teams building super teams. Plus, as stated, Kyrie wanted to be "the man" and he wasn't going to ever be that in Cleveland as long as Lebron was here (and there's no way he knew Lebron was leaving a whole year ago, maybe two years if the recent report was true about him asking for a trade after the 2016 title).

What would be the point of that trade for the Cavaliers?

Salary dump.

????

Bayless is due $8.75 million this year.

Korver is due $7.56 million next year, and has only #3.6 million guaranteed next year. (If waived by 7/7/19)

That's a difference of $2.4 million to trade away a useful player for a player who is probably not going to help much at all.
