Golf was probably invented by British Sheep farmers clubbing sheep turds out of the field.

"Hey man, I bet you can't get the sheep poo in that bin over there in 4 hits with that hoe you're carrying!" ... "Hold my scotch!"

What does it mean when they call the British Open "links" style of golf, and as opposed to what? That's not a quiz, btw, I'd actually like to know.

Without looking it up, I'd say it's based on the way the course is built. It forces the players to play a more low flight balls that bounce and roll than high flight balls that spin to a stop.

Links golf is a style course setup mostly devoid of trees, bordering on the ocean and utilizing a natural terrain, fairway stand traps and tall wispy native grasses as their defense. The fairways are hard and fast, allowing for shots to run out quite a ways. Hitting low, boring shots are effective in the strong winds coming off the water.

American courses are set more to be, target courses. Tree lined and water lined fairways force shots into a channel, lush fairways take away a lot of the run of links style, so you're more inclined to fly your shots to the green than to run it up.

Pretty much what Tulsa said.. Links is this crappy style of golf where sometimes your best shot from 80 yards out is to putt..

In America any course that is relatively flat and with few trees is called "Links style".. yet there is often not the wind and the fairways and greens are still plush... they are really just flat golf courses.

Sounds like the perfect playing style for my Dad who's a hack golfer, much like myself. He could never hit an iron straight, so he would always half-swing a wood and just roll the ball down the fairways.

Does your dad enjoy playing in a 30 mph wind when it's raining and 58 degrees?

It always cracks me up when people take the time to open a thread and then post to say they have no interest in what the thread is about...

Sounds like Cleveland in the spring and the fall. Actually, as a spectator, I kind of like the added dimension of the elements being a bigger factor. It becomes golfer against nature, kind of like a snow or mud game in the NFL, or when they play that NHL game on an outdoor rink.

Looks like nature took a holiday for today's round. The wind is not a factor, yet.

Hey, nobody gave you any crap when you ranted and raved during the world cup of another boring arse sport.

To back this up, I just heard them say they did a stimpmeter on the greens for a 10.1 and the fairways were a 9.5. I never heard of anyone doing a stimpmeter on a fairway before, much less it being almost as fast as the putting surface.

Maybe they oughta play the World Cup in Britain on one of the golf courses ...

Between the “rough” the bunkers and the wind it sure would make things interesting ... *L* ...

So, the greens are 10.1 stimps and the fairways are 9.5 stimps. Good to know.

If I'm not mistaken, the 33rd best golfer at the course nearest my apartment is probably pretty good.

People who haven't played the game don't understand how hard it is at the top level.

I carried a solid 4 handicap for a long time. It bordered a 3, but never got there .

The last 4-5 strokes to scratch are pretty darn hard.

Same as to break 100 if you're a lousy golfer like I was before selling my clubs lock, stock, 'n' barrel...

Man, watching yesterday it looked they were playing on a giant cart path! That ball was just ROLLING holy cow.

Nothing to do with the British Open, but when you said "cart path" I flashed back to E-trade baby ... "It was on the cart path, shankopotamous! Read the rulebook!". Loved those commercials. E-trade baby must be in middle school by now.

Molinari deserved to win. He was rock solid all weekend, particularly Sunday...

Yep, everyone else kinda faltered down the stretch but he was icy cool. He's been on a roll lately.

Btw I loved that golf course - Carnoustie, like most British Open sites, is beautiful.

The problem with Carnoustie is you have to hit very accurate woods.



Otherwise you can end up in the fairway.

Tiger is poised to win again soon.. He's never going to be feared the way he was in his prime but (if he can stay healthy) he's going to win again and once he gets that feeling of winning, I could see him winning majors....

I completely disagree. He may win a small tourney or beat phil, but I just don't see him having it to win. Even on sunday, I felt he was out of it the entire time. He just doesn't have that drive he used too, or the feeling he is going to birdie 6 in a row on a run.

I completely disagree with your disagreement. It's odd to say but Tiger is lacking confidence, you could see it in some of his swings on the back 9 on Sunday.. if he can win a smaller tournament or two and lift that trophy (for the first time in what, 5 years)... and have that feeling of closing out a tournament against a decent field.. I still think he could win another major or two...
