Browns' Baker Mayfield signs his 4-year rookie contract worth $32.68 million | cleveland.com https://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2018/07/browns_baker_mayfield_signs_hi.html#incart_2boxCLEVELAND, Ohio -- No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield, the Browns quarterback of the future, signed his four-year rookie contract just in time to avert a holdout. Players report on Wednesday and begin practicing on Thursday, and now Mayfield won't miss a beat. The contract, which includes a fifth-year club option, is worth bout $32.68 million fully guaranteed with a $21.85 million signing bonus. Mayfield returns to Berea after an eventful summer break that included getting engaged to Emily Wilkinson, a trip to Hawaii, working out with teammates such as Tyrod Taylor at USC, and winning an ESPY for the nation's best college athlete. Promoted to second-team offense during the final week of organized team activities in May, Mayfield has vowed to try to win the starting quarterback job even though Hue Jackson has told him it's Tyrod Taylor's. "I'm always competitive,'' Mayfield said during rookie camp. "It wouldn't matter what (Jackson) was saying in regards to the competition. I'm still going to compete and try and win that job. So I'm going to listen to him, but I've got to go compete, and first and foremost, I've got to go learn my job.'' Officially, official! 🖋 QB @bakermayfield has inked his rookie contract Details ยป http://brow.nz/RiDrXb 8:47 PM - Jul 24, 2018 Jackson set the tone right from the start, announcing on draft day that Taylor was his starting quarterback and that he wouldn't hold an open competition in camp. He had enough of the rookie blues his first two seasons, and is committed to a proven veteran after 1-31. "I'm not going to back off of this," he said during rookie minicamp. "We can keep writing this narrative. Tyrod Taylor's the starting quarterback of this football team, and that won't change." The fact that Taylor and Mayfield worked out together at USC before camp is a good sign. Mayfield heads in striking the right balance between competing and knowing his place. "It's not about individuals,'' Mayfield said in May. "They brought him and I in because we're both team-oriented guys. He's the starter, and all I can do is help us out. So when you get a guy like that that helps out a locker room in just the best way possible, he's a grinder. He comes in early. He's the last one to leave, and I can only aspire to be like that.'' During minicamp last month, offensive coordinator Todd Haley echoed Jackson's sentiments that Mayfield isn't ready to supplant Taylor anytime soon. "He has a long way to go,'' said Haley. "I'd say it's clear that Tyrod is the leader of this team. That is a big component of that position, also. "Anytime that you're a young player coming into this league, especially a quarterback, it's going to take time. You have a lot of different things that you're dealing with at that position. For him, a guy that has been in the [shot]gun 99 percent of the time, in this division you have to be under center some. "Whether it's running or play action, those are some of the things that he has really had to work hard at. But I'm happy that we have training camp because young quarterbacks need all of the time they can get." And now that he's signed and in on time, Mayfield won't miss a rep.

Good, but I wasn't worried about this. TT is our quarterback for now. And maybe longer.

Just need to get Ward under contract and we're good. He's supposed to be starting, not backing anybody up as Mayfield is. We REALLY need to get Ward under contract.

Why not the 5 year deal? I thought recently that the 1st rounders could be signed to 5 year deals and almost all of them had been.

I thought they were being signed to 4 year deals. And to tell you the truth, I'm glad it wasn't a 5 year deal. I'm not as sold on this guy studding out as some folks are.

1st round contracts are 4 year deals with a team option for a 5th year.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

I have to expect that all of the guys will be signing papers today. With Mayfield done, everyone else falls into place.

So did Garret and for that matter any top 5 pick we have ever made since 1999...(set for life)
That is why its important these high picks LOVE the game of football.
Only the overall #4 pick is left. Come on Ward get your butt in camp, you're freaking starting!

If TT is our starter next year it has nothing to do with our pick of WHO for QB it just means TT has elevated himself to elite QB regardless if we picked Mayfield or whoever....if you are saying a wasted pick in the sense that we could have had Barkley the only real Overall #1 pick other than QB...I get it but that had a lot of hindsight involved. Who would have Thunk TT would become an Elite QB.

Are you saying if we took Darnold TT wouldn't start in the same scenario??? Making Mayfield a bad pick.
What I'm saying is that Mayfield can still be a stud for the future even if TT elevates himself this next season...What if he takes us to the SB...ya think it will be easy for Mayfield or Darnold to take over the reigns.
Now if you are saying TT starts cause after year one Mayfield just is a bust, yeah of course that would be a bad pick isn't that an obvious. Or are you stating if he doesn't start in year two he MUST BE A BUST...
Like Rodgers was and like Rivers... oh wait? lol get my point its not as easy as saying we both have opinions. So we both must be right it depends on the variables...as in YEAH if Mayfield just SUCKS it was a bad pick. Which is an obvious. But what if TT just elevates his game to elite status? Does your theory still hold true?
jmho but like always I'm right...lol (I know many will think that but I'm just kidding)

If u insist ... - TT wonโt stud out ... he could get to above average cause the quality of qbโs in this league is so bad ... but heโll never stud out ... and u know why ... he will improve this year for a bunch of reasons ... the reason he wonโt stud out ... ACCURACY ... he has BRUTAL BOUTS OF INNACURACCY ... thats not gonna change bro .... and u know it ... - lets just say he did stud out or brought us to the SB ... were going to commit to him for a long term contract or franchise him to keep him for another year ... possibly franchise him but Baker should have shown enough by then to make us do a franchise and trade .... are u kidding me .. what heโd be worth after being a ONE HIT WONDER would be worth gold ... I like TT but he is what he is as a QB ... hes inconsistent accuracy will limit his upside ... Heโs incredibly smart and safe with the football ... The SB .. come on bro .. ...

It has zero to do with Darnold ... its all about TT not studding out and Bakers potential and the fact heโs an old man in terms of a rookie nfl qb ... heโs smart and a hard worker and has a better arm than TT in terms of throwing with zip on the intermediate stuff and he was way more accurate in college and he needs to be ass accurate throwing into the nfl windows ... Baker best have shown enough to be able to overtake TT by next year ... hes not sitting behind Brett Favre after all ...

I don't believe we're going to see a pass happy offense. I look for a more balanced offense and I'll be happy to see it. Glad Baker is signed and will be in camp on time. As PPE said, once the #1 pick is signed the remaining dominoes start falling. Ward should be signing quickly unless offset language becomes an issue.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I guess one could attribute it to his surrounding talent but it just seems from what I've seen that it's an accuracy issue. It doesn't appear that he's just throwing the ball away to me. I watch a lot of NFL football. Living in Nashville the only way to see the Browns live every week is the NFL Ticket.
So I DVR a lot of games and watch a lot of them. So I'm just giving you my opinion based on what I've seen. However, Diam sees pretty much every down of the Bills games and he seems to agree with what I see as well. Given that I'm going to have to say that I believe what my eyes have seen is pretty reliable.

I have heard a lot of Bill's fans problems were overthrows downfield sidelines.. out of bounds. They thought the WR was in a position to make catch. Still had an excellent completion % though...
The Cleveland Browns - WE KNOW QUARTERBACKS ( Look at how many we've had ... )

Those things have nothing to do with supporting cast. When he starts doing this in camp and preseason, the door opens for Baker. He wasnt ready to compete in mini and OTAs but if he is the guy, I expect him to start making that push by the end of week 2 of camp. Now if you want to just run the ball and pound it out, use the RPO with TT, and limit his thowing opportunities, We can win with Tyrod in that role.

Iโve watched almost every snap heโs taken in the nfl ... missed a few games last year ... other than that ... every single one ... His completion % is so high for a few reasons ... its not cause heโs accurate ... i used the words โinconsistent accuracyโ together cause thats what he is ... heโs INCONSISTENT ... extremely inconsistent ... One of the reasons his completion % is over inflated is he throws a ton of short stuff ... he had a great recieving back and not much else in the way of recievers ... thats not a bad thing when u have the shady one ... he also checked down a lot cause he didnt anticipate his recievers open ... that is a real bad thing ... His numbers will improve here for multiple reasons ... coaching, surronding talent heโs got another year under his belt ... but heโs just never going to be a very accurate QB ... One thing he really needs to work on is anticipating recievers open and he also needs to trust his recievers more ... he doesnโt throw balls that allow his recievers to make plays ... a poster mentioned above about the balls he throw out of bounds ... thats true ... one of the reasons for that is he is so safe with the ball .. hes going to make sure he throws it out of bounds before he throws it even a smidge inside ... Hes not a bad QB ... heโs also nothing special ... his accuracy issues will always limit him ... Looking at his completion % and ASSuming it makes him accurate is exactly why .... STATS ARE FOR NON WINNERS .... ...

ACCURACY ... he has BRUTAL BOUTS OF INNACURACCY
Don't know him that well to say for sure, I know his completion % has gotten better and his game has gotten better each season he started. But clueless on his accuracy. You state never will raise his game to that elite level cause of accuracy well if that is true BM will be our guy in 2019 and maybe somewhere during 2018. Accuracy with the weapons we got is a big big thing. If he ain't got it BM will be there. Was hoping he is more accurate than you say. But you might be jumping the gun then being where you live I know you got to know TT more than I. Just all I know is Mayfield is the real deal and only thing that can hold him back is TT studding out.
Its a wait to see thing. What I fear is Hue falling in love with TT and fighting the inevitable but I got a feeling Haley will have the final word on it not HUE and it could eventually bite Hue in the butt but I think he would get on the BM bandwagon rather than throw his career away.

I guess this is the thread to talk about Mayfield.
I was very pleased to see he was pretty outstanding in his Training camp - supposedly him and Higgins were having a field day. Being with the 2nd unit that was his Landry I guess.
Also good to hear that Mayfield and Calloway were successful in burning Ward on a Deep TD pass, something that Ward just wouldn't let happen previously. Of course Ward was impressed at Calloway's speed.
I think that kid is going to make us forget Coleman..
