Check out my buoy, Ernie Shavers. I knew the dude and he was cool as hell. He may have not bee the best technician, especially his defense, but he possessed a killer uppercut and a tremendous right cross.

I'll watch the video later but I assume Mike Tyson is in there someplace.

Perhaps the greatest fight I ever saw was when Ernie fought Larry Holmes. Ernie caught Holmes w/HUGE shots. I mean........HUGE. Somehow, Holmes w/stood those bombs and won the fight. It was back-and-forth, I kept making intelligent comments like "Wow," "Oh my goodness," and "Are you kidding me?"

Yeah, I was pulling for him to upset Holmes in the rematch and finally earn a championship. I thought he fought Ali as well as anyone. Really, Ali's performance in that fight was one of his best, stealing rounds in the last 20 seconds and especially digging to the bottom of the well in the 15th. I was all but heartbroken watching the last 30 seconds of the fight as Ali just picked him apart.

Five months later, Ali was about to face Leon Spinks... At the time he seemed invincible, but I could tell something was wrong before he even stepped in the ring. Shadow boxing in the dressing room he almost looked scared. Shavers ended his career, he just didn't know it yet.

I was so conflicted watching the Holmes/Shavers bout.

Holmes is my all-time favorite boxer. His style is reminiscent to mine. Light on the feet, powerful left jab, resilient.

Yet, I knew Ernie and he had the power that I dreamed of having.

I hated for either guy to lose that fight. It was truly an epic fight. And again, perhaps the most dramatic fight I have ever witnessed.

I learned to love Holmes... At the time I still hated him for taking the belt away from my man Ken Norton in that classic slugfest... a fight that I still think Norton won lol.

I hated Ken Norton. And he is one of the main reasons I love Holmes so much.

Before the bout, Ken Norton was on TV and was talking about how the American public didn't want a Heavyweight Champ who could speak. Holmes had a lisp for those of you who do not not know.

You have no idea how that infuriated me. And indeed, it infuriated Holmes.

Norton also said that Holmes hadn't been tested, lacked heart, and had a weak chin. He also showed up to Holmes camp and started some crap.

The fight went the distance, but Holmes could have knocked Norton out numerous times. Instead, he beat the crap out of him, backed off, and then beat him some more. "Call me ignorant."

Yeah buoy..............that s........was real.

I've watched that fight so many times... never got the impression Holmes was toying with him. Might be time for both of us to go back and watch again. I only knew they "didn't like each other", never knew of Norton's exploits til years later. In fact, I didn't even know Ken was awarded one of Spinks' belts til I got my Sports Illustrated and he was on the cover! lol Different world back then.

I'll never forget watching and re-watching the 9th round in years to come. One of the rounds two judges gave to Holmes. Norton has always won that round in my heart as he landed the bigger blows. There were about three very close rounds but that was the one that won the fight for Holmes. I always score the fight 143-142 Norton, bias-be-gone after many times watching.

Years go by and now we're two of the few people that watched it live and can appreciate it all these years later. The Golden Age of boxing bro, it can never and will never be the same.
