Am I reading this right? ... Grossi seems to be implying that the Browns may go with Ken Dorsey as their starting QB.
Hey, Tony!
Sunday, August 12, 2007
Got a Browns question? Send it in. Submit your question to cleveland.com/ heytony, and Plain Dealer Browns beat writer Tony Grossi will choose several to answer each Sunday here in the sports section. All of Tony's answers are archived online.
Q: Hey, Tony: Please explain to me why the Browns have not signed a veteran quarterback. They failed to do so last year as well. Are they brain dead? -- Tanner Slesh, Moreland Hills
A: Hey, Tanner: They appear to be cultivating their own "veteran quarterback." His name is Ken Dorsey.
Q: Hey, Tony: What are the Browns going to do with the fourth quarterback? To me, Derek Anderson probably has the most trade value, and I'd like to see them keep Ken Dorsey as the third quarterback since he has a little bit more experience. What do you think? -- Jason Cole, Rome, N.Y.
A: Hey, Jason: I believe there could be a major roster surprise in the offing. My answer above is a clue. What happens to Anderson or Frye? We shall see.
-- Tony

RAC will probably cut Anderson then flip a coin. That would mean Tony has a 50/50 shot of being right.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

What Tony is saying is that Dorsey is going to take the role of 'vet' to mentor Quinn... that way the Browns don't have to go sign a vet. Anderson will probably be cut with Frye to start the season, Quinn to take over half way through, and Dorsey will be the mentor/second QB coach.

This is exactly how I read it. The winner of the Frye/Anderson battle stays, the other goes. Dorsey is safe as a veteran mentor. Kosar was saying this during the broadcast last night as well.

I was struck by Grossi's use of the phrase "major roster surprise in the offing" ... would Derek Anderson being cut be considered a "major roster surprise"?. Not by me.

Considering they are both fighting for the number 1 spot, most would assume the loser would be a very viable back-up, that is not the case here.
So yeah, to many it would be a major event to cut your number 2. Especially when Dorsey is the 3rd stringer.

I'm wondering if the whole coinflip thing wasn't just Romeo's way of saying "makes no difference, neither of these guys is the answer - long term or short term.". I'm also wondering if he might not just be looking for a "game manager" type QB to keep the seat warm until Quinn is ready. It would certainly make for an easier transition to BQ than if he had committed to Frye or Anderson previously. Just thinkin' out loud ...

If Grossi has caught wind of something blowing around Berea, I doubt the major roster move would be a cut. Trade is more likely to fall in that description.
And if a team is looking to pick-up a qb who has a chance to help them early, soon would be the time to get things done.

You are looking at it as if Quinn has already been annointed the starter.
I don't Crennel has any plans other than to pick a starter and roll with him.

The Browns gave up what might be a top 3 pick in next years draft for Quinn. To me that qualifies as being "annointed" to be the eventual starter (this year).

Grossi is big on his "major surprise" announcements... remember,, according to Grossi, Cowher was supposed to be our coach right now!
Who knows, maybe this time it's real and the biggest surprise I can think of is cutting or trading Frye.... one never knows

I don't take that as Dorsey will be the starter. IMO the meaning of that is Dorsey IS the vet on the team, and Anderson will be cut if Frye beats him out (which he seemed to do last night), leaving Dorsey as the veteran for the guys to look up to, learn from, and fall back on.

YEP...And Dorsey making the roster over Anderson is the "Major Roster Move" he's referring to...
NOT Dorsey as the #1...Grossi ain't that stupid...
And this is exactly how it should be...
We need Dorsey for his BRAINS for Quinn AND Frye...Who cares if he's a noodle arm...
There's your VET mentor...Your #1 in Quinn...AND your experienced #2...
Good take Grossi...
Go Browns!!!

Still slinging this crap, huh?
I asked you to back this statement up with proof and you didn't, yet you still claim it's true.

I would not be surprised at all if a good part of this QB Competition was just trying to build trade value for one of them... If teams have truly made offers for Frye as some alluded to around Draft Day, and we can convince teams that Anderson is just as good, we could trade Anderson and gain a pick while keeping our starter and future #2. Vice versa the names there however you choose.
Kash: Quinn hasn't been annointed YET... but make no mistake, his eventual annointment is all but written in stone. A team will NOT give up what we did to get a player and not at least give them a fair amount of time starting to try to make it work....sometimes to a fault.

Oh for cryin out loud Bomber,, it was on the TV show that airs on Mondays during the season on Channel 3 WKYC.. This show has Donovan as the host/moderator, Coach Sam, Dieken and Grossi as the panel... Grossi said it even before Cowher made it known that he was leaving the Steelers. All three of the other guys on the panel looked at Grossi as if he were nuts...
Take my word for it, or don't, Frankly, I could care less if you believe me.
More than one person that lives here in NE Ohio heard him say it..... there wasn't more than just a passing converstion about it right here on these boards.. Most people took it as another Grossi "dumb prediction".
It's not my fault you have a short memory.... Live with it!

If it is DA that we're going to trade, what kind of pick could we get? After the way he played last night, I'd be surprised if any team was offering even a 7th rounder for him.

And what did he say?
I watched the show. I remember the episode. He did not say "I know for a fact that Bill Cowher will the be the coach of the Browns in 2007."
That's what you are saying he said and it's not true. You're accusing him of something he didn't say, and saying he's a moron for saying it.
Back it up or shut it up. It's just a little thing called proof.

that's why I think it might have all just been a bit of a game to bump the worth as I don't think we could have gotten much better than a 7th before this.

Is this a joke thread? Neither Fry nor Anderson or Dorsey has more than a 6th round trade value.(Other teams do not want our trash) Dorsey should and will be cut barring injury to the other QBs. In my not so humble opinion Dorsey is one of the worst QBs in the league.

actually, if you watched the game last night Dorsey is a helluva lot better QB than Anderson is.
Anderson has an arm.... yup, that's about the only thing I've ever seen from him and the closest thing to a compliment to him I've heard from any coach.
There is a hellluva lot more to being a QB than having an arm.

Oh, so now it's just a prediction -- not a fact? Grossi predicted something, and you're trying to say he claimed it as a fact and skewering him as being a bad journalist for doing it on a TV show?
Now you're getting closer to the truth.
Meanwhile, we've got people like Mike Trivisonno on the air yesterday on WMMS (100.7 FM at 6:30 PM EST) saying -- and I quote (that's what you do when you want people to take you seriously) -- "Romeo is not a head coach (...) I know for a fact that the Browns offered the head coaching position job to two other people last year."
See the difference? He's claiming opinion as fact and saying so.
Grossi's comment -- since you have no proof I'll throw you a bone -- was at the end of the Monday Night WKYC show with Sam Rutigliano, Jim Donovan, and Doug Dieken in the "big predictions" segment at the end. (This section is where they give everyone a short segment to give their predictions for upcoming games, stories, etc.)
Grossi had his turn and he said (paraphrasing) in his opinion, if all the stars aligned correctly, that Cowher would be the next coach of the Cleveland Browns.
He did not say for the 2007 season as you have clearly argued. He did not say it was a fact, as you suggest. He did not say Romeo would be fired. And it was all said on a TV SHOW in a section clearly reserved for opinions, predictions and pie-in-the-sky stuff.
Grossi did say that Cowher is unable to coach in 2007 because of his contract with the Steelers and that was the only fact delivered in that section -- one that you have never mentioned.
So, for the last time, stop taking things that were clearly delivered as opinions as trying to pass them off as fact. That may be why you have such a chip on your shoulder regarding the "media" -- because you can't tell the difference between the two.
Someone, somewhere has an opinion different than yours and you can't deal with it because, to you, fact and opinion are the same thing.

Sure, Dorsey isn't the best QB, but his record at UM doesn't lie... 38-2.
Who cares if he has a noodle arm, he's not expected to start. His leadership on the sidelines would mean alot more to us then carrying the loser of a mediocre QB battle. Yeah, risky, but by the time Brady gets up to speed and placed at 2nd on the Depth Chart, and if both he and Frye go down, I wouldn't expect to win with a 3rd stringer. Regardless of who he was. Here's to them keep Dorsey!
I want the Cleveland Browns to be my pallbearers so they can let me down for the last time.

The "next", yes. He said it could happen in 2008, in his opinion. He did not say "It is absolutely certain that Bill Cowher will coach the Browns in 2007" and he ABSOLUTELY did not write this in print anywhere.
For a group that complains so much about the media, you guys have a lot to learn about taking things out of context.

I don't care how hard or far Anderson can throw the ball. If you can't read a D and you can't hit your receivers, then you aren't going to make it.
I get tired of Donovan saying how Anderson can really "zip" that ball in there. Yeah, he'll actually get it "in there" less than half the time.
Anyone who's reading into this saying Dorsey is the starter can't read between the lines and is a sucker. Frye will be the starter, and Anderson is then expendable so we can keep the vet knowledge and prescence of Dorsey.

Agreed - I couldn't believe how negative his assessment of the Browns win vs the Chiefs was. I understand that we did not score a TD, but the offense looked improved, especially considering that this was the first preseason game with a new OC and scheme.

so because it was not written but stated on TV, a recorded medium ... it never occured?
I said "next" so my comment was exactly as stated.
The fact is that Grossi praises and panders the new coach, then turns and dumps them just as quickly.
He is the source of many of the rumours associated with the demise of the past coaches.
