Both you and I know that it's a lonngggg two months to the play-offs. I put the odds of a healthy Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer on October 1st at ~ 50%.

Maybe they should put Kluber, Carrasco and Bauer on the 60-day DL.

And place them in an hyperbolic chamber surrounded by doctors and armed guards.

LOL, I think that would be a hyperbaric chamber. The political forum here at DT might-could be called a hyperbolic chamber.

No wonder I got such strange images when I googled Hypebolic chamber.

Let's be clear the post season is about pitching.

In the AL the Indians don't have the lineup of N.Y. Boston or Houston.

To win in the post season against those teams; don't fool yourself. They will depending upon their pitching staff.

Just we didn't have the worthless days batting so often. Our pitchers will make us or break us in the playoffs should we manage to get there.

Like in football, I take outstanding D over great offense, because the O has off days, and solid D can keep you in a win. We have put up some great stuff offensively, but Hand and others seem to reflect a commitment to quality pitching controlling games.

Indians activate Andrew Miller. Bullpen should be golden, if he's healthy.

Can't be a one-pitch pitcher in the big show. I don't care if you throw a 95 mph fastball if that's all you can throw for strikes. Major leaguers eat that <stuff>.

Tough loss .... the Angels are weird to me: they seem to be a good team without a good record

What a clutch performance by Kluber.

Great to see a sell-out Cleveland crowd so rewarded.

I saw classic Francona yesterday.

The man’s a genius.

Here’s what I saw.

He’s preparing the Indians for the play-offs.

Specifically, he’s getting the bull pen into the best possible shape.

Yesterday, he pitched the main cogs of the pen:

Adam Cimber, Andrew Miller, Cody Allen & Brad Hand.

Nice looking pen!

Two hard throwing lefties and two decent righties.

First, they all got some work in.

In a ”game-on-the-line” situation. (not a blow-out)

I think in “blow-outs” most relief pitchers can pitch a little more “relaxed”.

(Not what you want to practice for in the play-offs.)

So Francona can evaluate them carefully in this situation and if needed, possibly make adjustments to the pitcher’s individual approach to batters.

He’s also noting how batters do when facing different styles in consecutive at bats. (it’s hard to focus-in on a pitcher when in one at bat you face a submariner right-hander and next time up you face a hard-throwing lefty)

Right now Francona is preparing the Tribe for the greatest chance for success in the play-offs.

He has the luxury of not having to worry about an intense September pennant race (that can deplete/tire/injure players).

This can be a luxury.

But I think it can also be a curse. (mentally) (see last year). The Indians will be a little less cocky going into the play-offs this year.

There’s no guarantees in the play-offs. There’s always a chance that the worst team in baseball can beat the best team in baseball in a 5 or 7 game series. That’s why it’s fun.

This year I don’t want any fun!

How many times have the Indians scored 10 runs this year? It seems like they do it once a week or so.

Nice win tonight 10-0.

Could Bauer win the Cy Young this year?

One day he'll be the most sought after pitching coach out there.
If I were him I'd start a school on just the mental aspects of the position. He's transformed into this highly focused killer on the mound!

Terry Francona asks Cleveland Indians' fans to keep Leonys Martin in their thoughts

Updated 6:38 PM; Posted 6:37 PM

https://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2018/08/terry_francona_asks_cleveland.html
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Indians manager Terry Francona said Friday that outfielder Leonys Martin is at Cleveland Clinic receiving treatment for an an undisclosed medical condition.

"We have to respect what the family wishes so we are," said Francona before the Indians opened a three-game series against the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. "We talked to the team a little bit. We just need to respect their privacy right now.

"What I would say, if you believe in saying prayers and things like that, keep him in your thoughts. But he's in a good place. He's at the Clinic and he's getting good care."

The Indians acquired Martin from the Tigers on July 31 just before the non-waiver deadline. He became ill Tuesday night and did not play Wednesday. On Thursday the Indians placed him on the 10-day disabled list and recalled outfielder Greg Allen from Class AAA Columbus.

Chris Antonetti, Indians president of baseball operations, was at the Clinic on Friday visiting with Martin's family.

Martin, in six games with the Indians, is hitting .333 (5-for-15) with two homers and four RBI.

Good to see Kipnis swinging the bat better. He just had a double into the RF corner. With Martin's apparently serious ailment laying him up for who knows how long, there's a rumor that we're trying to trade for 3B Josh Donaldson from Toronto to be able to move Ramirez to 2B and Kipnis to the OF. If that happens, I'd guess Kipnis goes to LF, Brantley to RF, and we'll see a platoon of Rajai Davis and Greg Allen in CF. Guyer will see more time too ... meh.

Yeah, hope Trevor is OK.

Hand came in and walked 2, then struck out 2 to end the 7th.

Trevor Bauer still limping, but Tito said he should be OK for his next start, which should be Friday vs Baltimore. Thursday’s off day will help.

I wonder if the Indians have ever looked into what pitches are coming back through the box at our guys, because it sure seems to happen a lot. I can recall Carrasco, Kluber, Clevinger, and now Bauer getting tattoed with batted balls this year. Carrasco had to go on the DL from it this year, just like when his hand was broken by a batted ball just before the 2016 post season. I could be wrong, but my sense is that it happens when RH hitters catch up with a fastball or cutter that's down in the strike zone, middle of the plate-to-slightly outside. Maybe if there's a common denominator - pitch speed / location / type of hitter - they could change that approach with those types of hitters. Or maybe just chalk it up to bad luck, who knows.
