From today’s installment of the “ex-Browns busts who still can’t figure it out files”:It appears that after two years in Denver, the Broncos have had enough of former Browns d-lineman Gerard Warren.

How badly does Denver not want him around? Well bad enough that Denver told him not to bother traveling with the team to San Francisco on Sunday for an exhibition game. Ouch.

According to Sunday’s edition of the Denver Post, sources within the Broncos organization are using the old “Gerard is a bad fit for the system” gag. The team’s new system on defense is being run by former Browns assistant Jim Bates.

Of course, most Browns fans fondly remember Gerard for being more disruptive off the field than on it. While in town, Gerard was known for an array of off the field activities including his self described “skirt chasing” that led to his lack of conditioning as well as once being described as “the nicest mans we’ve ever arrested” by the police after a gun was found during a routine pull-over.

A disappointment throughout his tenure in Cleveland, the former 3rd pick overall of the 2001 draft was traded to Denver prior to the 2005 season.

Warren played well that year for the Broncos, but production plummeted this past year. Perhaps it was (or wasn’t) a coincidence that Warren had his best year for Denver because he was playing for a new contract and decided to take a break for 2006? Hmm…

Now that sounds like the Gerard Warren we all remember here in Cleveland.

That's wasted on more than half of this group probly. However, he is a joke, and he loves every mike in his face. I hated him here, and he became a professional play taker offer, stepped it up so he could take entire series off (I won't go so far as to say entire games, because that would be mean, small, arguably true, and exaggerate the truth). He is going to do some good for somebody I suppose just on sheer girth, but I would like to see the "scheme" that an entire Too Much Money squad could accommodate. Can't imagine. This elephant LIVES in the Graveyard so he only walks once.

I still remember quite a few posters on several boards getting upset Phil dealt Warren away..I kept saying he was a wasted pick EVEN when Botch drafted him..
He only performs when he's up for a contract..once he gets it , he's done like a Honeysuckle Turkey..

What? If he'd have performed as he should have , it would not have been a wasted pick.

Yeah but the guy had serious effort and character issues in college...but Butch overlooked them.

I think what hurts just as bad as getting Warren over LDT was that everyone in the draft room (allegedly) thought the Browns were drafting Richard Seymour.

Here's the thing I mentioned a few days after the draft.
I watch a lot of college ball and always have since I was a kid.
I have seen Florida as much as anyone..I never EVER remembered hearing his name at all...
Now the newspapers posted that the Warroom had Syemour rated # 1 on their board..Butch came in and over ruled everyone on taking Warren instead.
Because he had tried to recruit him and since Miami was a opponent of the Gators he was familar with him..
I was soo ticked ..of course that was round one
It got worse in round two..with Quincy ICANNEVERCATCHAPASSINMYHANDS...
and then James Iambetterthanedgerinjames Jackson...

With our team and the direction we were going, we would have ruined LT. Seymore however, would have been solid... IMO he's the one that got away. Our line is the only thing holding us back from having a GREAT defense.

They also didnt have Botch.

I don't understand how the media can say this. If you look at Chump Change's stats with Denver they are the same as when he was with the the Browns so how was his career revitalized?

In a deal involving two division rivals and bitter foes, the Denver Broncos on Monday morning traded defensive tackle Gerard Warren to the Oakland Raiders for an undisclosed draft choice that is believed to be a middle-round selection.

The trade came after the Broncos held Warren out of both their preseason games while they shopped him around the league. It was believed that, if Denver failed to find a viable trade partner by early this week, they would release the six-year veteran tackle. Washington was among the teams that would have been interested in Warren as a free agent.

But the Broncos found a buyer, instead, in the most unanticipated place.

It is hard to quantify the enmity that exists between the Denver and Oakland organizations. Compounding the bad feelings is that Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan was fired by the Raiders four games into the 1989 season, and waged a long battle with owner Al Davis for what he claimed was salary still owed him.

One possible angle to the trade is the presence of recently-hired scout George Streeter in the Oakland personnel department. Streeter worked in the Cleveland scouting department when the Browns selected Warren in 2001.

In Oakland, Warren, now traded for a second time in three seasons, joins a tackle depth chart that includes veterans Warren Sapp, Terdell Sands and Tommy Kelly.

The third overall player chosen in the 2001 draft, Warren, 29, was acquired by Denver from Cleveland in a 2005 trade. In two seasons with the Broncos, the former University of Florida standout started in 31 of a possible 32 games and registered 93 tackles and 5½ sacks. That included 51 tackles and 2½ sacks in 2006, when Warren appeared in 15 games, all of them as a starter.

But while Warren was still listed as the starter at right tackle on the unofficial depth chart, his playing style no longer dovetailed with the Denver defense and that, in part, has made him expendable. New coordinator Jim Bates prefers two-gap tackles, interior players who are anchors more than penetrators, and Warren has always been a one-gap defender, a guy who likes to get upfield.

To suit Bates' design, the Broncos have dramatically revamped their tackle corps, adding four players in the offseason. Denver signed classic two-gap tackle Sam Adams and Alvin McKinley as unrestricted free agents and added Jimmy Kennedy in a trade with the St. Louis Rams. In addition, the Broncos chose Marcus Thomas in the fourth round of the 2007 draft.

As of Monday morning, the Raiders, who assumed Warren's existing contract, had not attempted to rework the deal. This spring, Warren accepted a dramatic reduction in his base salary for 2007, to the veteran minimum of $595,000, to remain with the Broncos.

But his current contract includes base salaries of $4 million for 2008, $4.63 million for 2009 and $4.68 million for 2010. ESPN.com has also learned that, if Warren participates in 50 percent of the defensive snaps in 2007, he will collect a $2 million bonus.

In stints with the Browns (2001-2004) and Broncos (2005-2006), Warren has appeared in 91 games and started 90 contests. He has 340 tackles, 22 sacks, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 15 pass deflections. His 22 sacks are the eighth most in the league by a tackle since he entered the NFL in 2001.

Well somebody needs to fix their numbers cause according to NFL.com he only made 36 tackles in his 2 seasons with the Broncos, not 93 and he only had 22 tackles last year, not 51.

He's right where he belongs now. ....

In Oakland,... He seems to have a lot of trouble fitting any defensive scheme.

Warren, the third overall pick in the 2001 draft by Cleveland, spent the last two seasons in Denver, making 49 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He revitalized his career with the Broncos after struggling through four seasons with the Browns.

But Warren apparently didn't fit new defensive coach Jim Bates' scheme, which requires tackles who can hold their positions instead of penetrating the backfield.

Well...this makes no sense. The Raiders already had a logjam there, but they just couldn't resist adding another underachiever. Go Old Man Davis!

What a steal for the Broncos.

Wanted to add Sapp's comments ...

Sapp said he didn't see the need to add any defensive linemen, saying he was happy with the group that opened camp with the team and that he had a hard time seeing Warren make the team.


"My eight's been here since I first walked in the door and I said, 'There's my eight.' That's what I've looked at and said, 'There's my eight, I can win with those eight,"' he said. "And he never came into that picture until I walked into the job this morning. I don't see him cracking that eight. I don't make personnel decisions around here, but I don't see him cracking my eight.".....


Sapp's been watching too many cell phone commericals.

Soooo...Sapp's eight, sounds like he's callen the shots, Warren dont move the fridge in yet, 2nd thought, ya might wanna ask Warren to help ya carry it to your car, ya both might be heading to the parking lot for good..
