Obviously I'm going to receive some strong criticism from the Hue fans for my opinion. And actually I'm not saying this is a bad thing, but I don't think there was any thought behind Hue's comments other than this is his team and he's going to do whatever the heck he wants.
After seeing Hue in action since he got here and watching hard knocks, I think Hue loves being a head coach and the power that comes with it. There's no doubt who's team this is and I actually think after going 1-31 this is a good thing. It appears he's not lost his confidence that he can do this, but on the flipside and I don't care who you are, there has to be questions about what Hue is doing and whether or not it works. I know his fans want to blame the front office, but at the end of the day Hue was and still is the coach of a 1-31 team.

JC NOB says..... Mayfield is a project, and most of the passes he threw in the 1st preseason game would have been picked off in an actual NFL game when it mattered. Most of the passes he was throwing were against guys that won't even make an active roster, and against very vanilla base D's. Mayfield is no where near ready.
The majority of the post was good reading and I agree but this part made the entire post sound like a agenda driven poster. I can agree all his throws were not money but the majority of his throws were NFL caliper throws....not the other way around. Very confusing post none the less.
You dont have to win every game just the next one!

Brees started right out of the gate and sucked eggs ... hell the offensive mastermind Marty hated him so much he drafted a QB at #4 and let Brees walk ... BRILLIANT ... *L* ... it didn’t destroy him ... Brees had pretty much destroyed his shoulder in that final game. Had Brees not have gotten hurt it very well could have been Brees still leading the Chargers instead of Rivers. That shoulder injury dictated Brees future. There was a contingency who believed Brees' career was over. However, Rivers allowed him to be expendable. I’m doing this off memory ... like i do almost everything on here ... I LIVED this stuff ... in this case u may be right ... but i do believe u may have your years mixed up ... They drafted Rivers the year before Brees blew out his shoulder ... Rivers sat behind Brees his rookie year ... then Brees blew his shoulder out ... but that literally didnt matter ... they drafted Eli at #1 and then traded him to the gnats for Rivers who they had taken at #4 ... BREES WAS GONE as soon as they did that ... And if my memory serves me correctly that was the year before Brees blew out his shoulder ... They had drafted Rivers BEFORE the shoulder injury ... im sure i’ll Be corrected if i’m Wrong ... ...

I’m pretty sure i’m right ... i remember watching Brees getting undressed by Marty during that Pitt game iand it was game 15 i believe ... maybe it was game 16 .... but i remember saying ... damm .. they are gonna draft a qb and give up on Brees all ready .. how dumb ... he’s gotten better all year ... Then they drafted Rivers .. and then brees went out and had a really good year and destroyed his shoulder at the end of the year ... the rest is history ... I thought it was Marty but Vers very well may be right ... it may have been AJ ... but either way it was a DUMB ASS move by who ever did it ...

I understand some may not agree with my assessment. Thats fine, I am not going to call that person "dumb" like some folks on here will acting like a child.
the FACT is, Baker Mayfield chances of being "the answer" at QB increase exponentially if he is given time to sit, learn, develop, and hone his craft. He has a lot to work on, which is OK, he is a rookie, he needs time to transition. Tyrod Taylor is a guy in his prime, a Pro Bowl QB. I fully believe Dorsey traded for him due to his history of planning to sit his rookie Qb year one like he done with Rodgers and Mahommes, and he wants a guy who will play well enough this year that their won't be any calls for the rookie because we are winning games or in contention/competing which is what Taylor is going to give us.
If were .500 or close no way Mayfield sees the field, which is to Mayfields benefit.
For all those QB Ver listed as succeeded starting as rookies, you cna name twice as many that failed, some of whom may have worked out had they had a chance to sit.
Just off the top of my head, guys who started as rookies who failed include:
Tim Couch David Carr Matt Leinhart J.P Losman Patrick Ramsey Cade Mcnown Brady Quinn Akili Smith Ryan Leaf Jamarcus Russel Johnny Manziel Daunte Culpepper Rex Grossman Byron Leftwich Ken O'Brian Mark Malone Tony Eason Richard Todd Kyle Boller
I could go on, point is, for every 1 Qb drafted that works out 3 or 4 bust hard. Your chances of not busting decrease a lot when you give your rookie a chance to develop instead of just thrusting him out there.
Baker may think he is ready, I would expect him too. However, its in the Browns, as well as the organizations best interest to let Mayfield red shirt this year. Let him run the scout team, let him learn the playbook, let him work on his craft, let him pick Haley's brain, make him work and earn his way up the ladder, Give the kid a chance to get up to speed with the NFL. This way next year Mayfield can hit the ground running, and he will have had time to learn and develop and just maybe he works out in a big way for us.
If he starts this year, chances are not good he works out. Your throwing the dice at that point. I'd much rather have a plan, sit Mayfield, develop him, and take as much chance out of the equation as possible so success and failure is put into variables we have a chance to control instead of putting them into inexperience and chance.
the question is, does Dorsey stick to the plan, or does he cave to pressure. Thats the million dollar question. guess we will see.

And what have you added to this thread except for calling me out? I have several posts that deal w/the topic and our logical. You ignore them all. You don't make any comments on the topic. You pop in and call me out. Maybe it's about time you moved on from the middle-school girl's lunch table.

I don't know. I don't think you can draw conclusions one way or the other. I don't buy in that the guys who "bust" would have been really good QB's had they sat or the guys who were really good would have bust had he started in year one.

I think the answer to all of this talk about sitting a rookie or not is fairly simple.
There is always a possibility that if you rush a rookie into service it may turn out to be harmful. As has been pointed out, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.
On the other side of the coin, I can't think of a single incident when taking your time working a rookie into the starting role has been harmful.
The perfect scenario when drafting a rookie QB is to have a QB on your roster who can and has won in the NFL. Put yourself in a situation where there's no need to start the rookie. It gives you the perfect scenario to be cautious.
Rushing a rookie QB into the starting role "may turn out to be harmful". Sitting him and giving him time won't. I don't see following a path that may be harmful when you have the option not to go down that path.

If I remember correctly, there was some controversy over what to do with Rivers before Brees got hurt. He got hurt and it made the decision very easy.

general reply havent read through all this.
Hue was over his head last year trying to be HC, OC and QB coach. I honestly think he has stepped back and is able to see things more clearly from his HC role. Baker wasnt geting in early and Hue let him know that Tyrod was. I think this statement was different but a similar message. If you dont have a true mastery of the playbook, not only are u going to be a backup but u are gonna be the 3rd string backup.
We are seeing hue the manager and imho he is doing an excellent job of being that from what I have seen this year. Hell we still may see Baker playing by week 3 but this regime is making it very clear, BAKER YOU WANT IT, DO THE WORK AND EARN IT.

However, I've always been a work-late kind of guy. Oftentimes beyond midnight...I get in the office when I get in the office. My staff knows how it works. I think poor managers focus on optics (what time did YOU get in the office today) over results. In my first job as an Accounting professional, my manager would sit in his office at the end of the day...doing NOTHING...until another Accounting Manager would leave. Scarred me for life. Maybe Baker is up till 2:00am studying his playbook while TT is sleeping...because TT would rather get in at 5:00am? Baker's reported-dramatic improvement from OTA-->TC didn't just happen without him working on it. I'd rather Hue talk about working as hard as TT without caring what time of day it happens.

Yeah, expecting the future leader of your team to set a good example for the rest of the team by showing up early is terrible! lmao

Well, my biggest concern would certainly be that Baker isn't getting enough sleep to function at the highest level he could. If he's going to bed around midnight and coming into the office at 5 (HK showed him studying the playbook at 6:30 AM, I'm assuming that's after a morning workout), then he's not getting adequate enough sleep to perform at a high level. I know it sounds a little ridiculous, but the devil is truly in the details.

If they are ruined because they had a bad season then they are mentally weak and would never be great anyway.

I got that he was trying to use some lame BS to question anything Hue does like a few others do. Yes.
Be prepared for the day. You can't meet with the other QB's or have your QB mentor around at midnight. Nobody has ever said the late bird gets the worm.
I found the premise to be nit picky and moronic.

btw Pit Mayfield is showing up early. It was the first day that he did not and he definitely improved on that. 5 a.m.? that was not revealed either way but he definitely is showing up earlier. Plus doing all he can after practice.
As for the Stanton at #2...well it appears that is pretty much to do about nothing.
Mayfield is schedule as the #2 QB with Stanton probably getting some reps in the 4th qtr.
So I really would like to hear or see the entire interview that the "QUOTE" came about.

I saw he was coming in early. Hue told him what he needed to do and he listened to his coach right away. That makes me think he's a very coachable young man willing to do anything he can to succeed. Actually that was revealed in episode 2 of Hard Knocks.
I'm loving it that he seems far more approachable than I thought he was. He seems to be a very hard worker and is doing everything in his power to succeed from everything I've seen.

Hue told him he needed to come in earlier which was no big deal and sets an example for the rest of the team. As a QB that's expected.
Then it became a question about him needing to come in early. Nit picky BS as I said.

Sorry to break in on the lunch table drama, but I want to talk a little football again.
I'm watching NFL Network and the guys are talking about the Browns and Bills' qb situations. The Bills are trying to split the reps between three guys. Both Mooch and Robinson said that none of the guys are getting the reps they need.
Meanwhile, Hue picked a starter and his guy is getting the much-needed reps.
Which team do you think will be better prepared going into the season?

That's a good point and making Baker his 3rd string QB (at least on paper) is even better because it takes the wind out of all the Baker chanter's sails early too.
I just hope that he sticks to it, because he's been wishy washy with our QB's in the past.

It may not take that long. If we start losing games and TT is looking even average, the boo birds will be out in force. Just the nature of the beast when you have a 1st round QB on the bench and your starter isn't looking really good. Heck, it could happen in game 1 against the Steelers. It's going to be really important for the D to play well and limit the Steelers to take some of the pressure off TT. If he starts to feel like he has to take chances to get back in the game, things could get ugly.

A standard I observed for years had the backup receiving 20% of the reps with the #1s. That is the only thing I'm objecting to. I would like to see him interact and play with the #1s more. there is much more cohesiveness and understanding of the playbook with them. More disciplined routes. Working with guys who won't be on the team or might be on Special Teams can retard his growth somewhat.

I'll be honest: Stanton looked downright awful last night
If we ever play him over Mayfield that's an enormous mistake
Keep him on the sidelines and in the film room.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

Hue could avoid it if he wanted to. Hue was head coach just last year in 2017, and they can try to sell me on it was a "headache" that pulled him off, which I don't fully buy 100%, But in 2017 the Browns Opening day starter only got FIVE AND A HALF QUARTERS before the back up Qb saw action. So for the sense of "Stability" I'm all for following the teams decision.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

Stanton is a marginal backup QB. Decent arm but inaccurate.
His job is as a mentor. A player coach.
Nice try Hue, but I do not believe it for a second.

Nice try Hue, but I do not believe it for a second. Agreed: I just take the comment as, "Keep working, rookie, still a long way to go." With that said, I wouldn't be against Stanton taking a game or two early on if Baker isn't yet ready or, perhaps more importantly, if the offense is letting Tyrod Taylor down early in the season. I'm a little worried about the protection at the moment. I view Mayfield as a long-term investment. I wouldn't do anything over the coming months if I felt it could even potentially have a negative impact on my plans over the coming years.

If we don't see Baker get some reps with the ones this week, that will be a shame.
Not so much to create controversy, but rather to give him a feel with those guys. If he doesn't, you can bet he isn't going in any time soon during the regular season.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong
