I don't think I've ever been as excited about a player as I am about Myles Garrett going into this season. There are actually several players I'm super excited to see play. Garret and Mayfield top the list with Bitonio, Gordon, Calloway, Landry, Hyde, Chubb, Avery, Ogbah, Ogunjobi, Ward, and Peppers. I hope Bitonio proves to be much like Thomas at the LT position, that would be awesome.

We have a pretty darn good Long Snapper ...... So there.

Not even sure why it's a debate. Garret is just cracking the surface on what is going to be an impact full NFL career. Nassib is terrible and there was a noticeable awareness on Garret by offenses to double and chip when Ogbah went down. This quote was from 12/30/2017. New quote time. Myles Garret will be an All Pro as early as this season if he stays healthy. If Myles Garret has a full season and does not get 15 sacks I will be very disappointed.

I love joe... and he was amazing for years,,, but to have a winning team you need your best guy at a position that can change the game... qb... pass rusher.... someone who can single handedly win a game... LT can't do thwt... not saying it's not crazy important... but that's kind of how I took the comment...

I think the real issue here is that you need more than one great player at a time.. it's the NFL, not the NBA.

I agree w/what you are saying, but that isn't what they were talking about. I think punters and long snappers were mentioned and then someone brought up left tackles.
I don't care what position it is, your team will suck if most of the team is full of incompetent players. My point is that LT is a very important position. It wasn't Joe's fault that the team sucked.

jaybird...it is an imperative to get as many X factors of rare talent on your team as possible. Here are the rarest in order:
1. QB multiplied by 10 rarest of the rare. We finally have a Franchise prospect who looks actually to be a Franchise QB as well as a bonafide starting QB in TT. A first for us and we go two fold.
2. LT its still a rare find oh you can find guys who can "PLAY" the position but Rare is to find somebody who can excel in the position and the SKILL SET needed. Joe Thomas was great and don't get confused on the importance. Granted its not a position that will Carry a team. But see #1, it accentuates the production of #1 which is so so important. Its not Joe's fault for not having a #1 on this team since 99 till this season. That does not diminish the importance of the most important edge which he was in control of for so many seasons.
3. Edge Pass Rusher: I love it, we could have an amazing 4 for obvious passing downs and if we have a lead. Larry/Nassib on the inside, Ogbah on the inside, Garrett and Avery on the outside. This 4 could end up being the best in the NFL!
4. Cover Corners, probably the position we have improved the most. Not only with WARD but we brought in several players along with the natural maturation of some young Corners we already had on this team.
This is why we are better than any other Browns team since 1999. For such a long time we only had #2 on our roster.
This year we got 1,3,4 and a serviceable #2 in Botonio. I do hope we can accrue picks to move up in the first next year and get us that #2 we would have an edge on the NFL!
Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off! Go Browns! CHRIST HAS RISEN! GM Strong! & Stay safe everyone!

Thanks. That is an awesome article.
The guy is intelligent, thoughtful, articulate, sincere, etc.
He is also a true athletic marvel. We throw the "beast" word around a lot, but his dude......Let me tell you, he is a true beast.
I love seeing him on Hard Knocks. The way he carries himself. He knows he is an absolute freak, yet he is thoughtful and sincere. I loved how he coaches Orchard. He wasn't telling Nate what to do. Instead, he would ask probing questions that were designed to get Orchard reach his own conclusions. That was so impressive.
He won't get the media attention that guys like Kaep, Bell, Josh Gordon, etc get.....but, he has my respect because he does things the right way, even if he is marching to the beat of a different drum.

football players playing pick up basketball on campus will be the bane of my existence. Years ago I had to stop Carlos Hyde from beating my ex-roommate's ass after they both fought over a 50/50 ball going out of bounds. Although, I'll admit, I did want to see Carlos give him a beat down.

I’m 6’5” so I always had to guard the biggest guy when the football players (or anyone else) played pickup. It was always some offensive linemen or tight end who only wanted to back down guys in the post. I had no chance. Also, rebounding was impossible.

One thing we saw on Hard Knocks, and Hue Jackson mentioned when announcing that Garrett had been voted a team captain by his team, was that he's becoming a more vocal leader.
I think last year, in spite of the injuries, it was pretty clear this kid was a special talent. That hasn't ever worried me. What did, however, was that his nature would inhibit him from being a real leader.
On Hard Knocks, a few moments stood out.
- When Greg Robinson (?) got annihilated and gave Garrett a slap of disapproval. Garrett grabbed him, and the bass in his voice bellowed as he boomed, with real fire in his eyes, "I'm pass rushing. Stop me."
- In the final episode when he was coaching Nate Orchard, as someone has already mentioned. The way he proved Nate in to realizing he was going about it all wrong, and then worked with him to show him the difference. We saw that calm, thoughtful side of Garrett, but there was a real authority to him. It had Nate's attention, and had him willing to work on changing his game.
- A few shots from the sideline showed him getting hyped up, making noise, celebrating with guys and getting the juices flowing. It showed that the moment really does mean something to him. That he's not just here because he's talented, but because he loves football and the environment of football, and it's establishing him as a presence that his team mates can really draw from. He'll never be a rah-rah guy, but he's also not a downer, he brings an energy that is important.
I don't doubt his ability for a second. He could legitimately emerge as the best pass rusher in the NFL this season. He could be the DPOY. He could be an All-Pro. I'm also more confident in saying that he will be a leader. He will be key in inspiring his team mates. He'll bring an energy and competitive nature that will keep morale running.
Willie joked that we should thank Sashi for drafting him, but we quickly forget it was contentious. The Dallas incident had people mad at him. Some felt he was too soft and injury prone. The desire to take a quarterback had some people wanting the team to instead grab Trubisky/Mahomes/Watson and be done with it. The likes of Thomas, Barnett and Allen had some saying it was worth passing on Garrett.
I'm damn thankful we've got Garrett on this team. He could be special this year.

yeah, Garrett has all the makings of being something very good ... and he should be. IMO, with his draft status, he should be better than any other DE in the league.
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

This. I have noticed the same here recently, people talking about the drafting of Garrett as if it was a unanimous consensus pick, when I remember much heated discussion between the Garrett camp and the Trubisky camp. I saw one of the Trubisky camp call the Garrett pick "obvious" last week and I almost called him on it. But then I remembered my policy of not responding to anything by that particular poster.

That is a bit extreme. Other edge rushers such as Clowney, Miller, Mack, etc have the same--or similar draft status. I don't know if this was your intent, but it sounds like you are setting him up for criticism and not deserving of praise. I don't think it's "the best or nothing."
I want to speak to something BDU brought up. The scene w/Orchard in Hard Knocks was so very impressive. He didn't belittle Orchard. He didn't talk down to him. He wasn't accusatory. He was asking Nate questions and trying to get him to rethink his alignment and stance. That was a scene that will stay w/me for years because of how impressive it was.

I agree with you, but will any player put his body at risk in a 0-16 season? Give the guy a break.... If we turn this around and he does not step his game, I will say that he is not living to his draft status. But MG has the tools, he has showed us that he can play, he is not consistent but I don't blame him on that...

MG is 20-1 to be the DPOY ... I couldn't help myself and stuck $15 on him to win $300. He's got that potential so I figure that's a fun bet. Stuck $3 on Malik Hooker too - he's 50-1 ... # sacks would be a great start. Although I'd settle for 1 sack, 1 forced fumble and a return for a TD.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

How about racking up safeties? Over under for year's total or regular season? Has to count as something special.
I would love to see MG bag this one.
