HEADLINE: Steelers are gift that keeps on giving
COLUMN
Be forewarned, this column is going to display multiple personalities.
Sorta like the Pittsburgh Steelers.
In the 40-year history of the Super Bowl, no defending champion has ever been as pathetic as these Steelers. At 2-6, they are off to the worst start that any Super Bowl champ has ever had.
It?s only halfway through the season and already they are becoming jokes around the league.
Q: How many Pittsburgh Steelers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Eleven. One to fumble it, and the other 10 to stand around watching as someone from the other team picks it up and sticks it in the socket.
Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: To intercept Ben Roethlisberger again.
This season has been a dizzying array of turnovers from Pittsburgh, which committed six (three fumbles, three interceptions) in yesterday?s 31-20 loss to the Denver Broncos at Heinz Field. And just as bad, the Steelers forced none.
That 6-0 disparity in turnovers is about as ugly as it gets, though not a surprise considering that Pittsburgh is now minus-14 (8 takeaways, 22 giveaways) in that category in its six losses this season.
In case you missed that, read that again.
Minus-14!
Might as well just start each game trailing 14-0, which, as a matter of fact, is exactly what they did against the Broncos.
There is plenty of blame to go around for such sloppiness, as just about every player has given one away at a critical juncture this season: Hines Ward against Denver, Ben Roethlisberger four times against Oakland, Willie Parker against Atlanta, Ricardo Colclough against Cincinnati, anyone else who tries to return a kick, etc.
One game of such carelessness may be a fluke, two could be a coincidence and three?s certainly a trend ? but six games? That?s a tombstone.
Bill Cowher has not turned over the ball once, but he must shoulder the responsibility for his team?s collapse. The Steelers are clearly playing with a lack of focus, and that buck stops squarely on the head coach?s chin.
There is simply no other explanation for such a poor showing ? minus-14! ? in one of the most fundamental aspects of the game.
Which leads us to Personality No. 2.
The Steelers are still a good team.
It?s not as if they are getting beaten up and down the field. Only twice (Jacksonville, San Diego) did they get clearly outplayed, and in each of those it was a tight battle deep into the second half.
They can move the ball, witness Big Ben?s 734 passing yards over the past two weeks. Parker is on pace for nearly 1,300 rushing yards and 16 total touchdowns, which would put him among the NFL?s elite. They are in the league?s top 10 defensively against the run and the pass.
Outside of their decidedly unspecial teams, the Steelers? only glaring problem is those turnovers. Take away all those giveaways and this is a 6-2 team.
If the Steelers can somehow start taking care of the ball, they would be a dangerous opponent down the stretch.
If they can somehow regain their focus, they could have a shot at catching Baltimore despite being four games back. They still play the Ravens twice, and the Ravens also have games at Cincinnati and Kansas City left on their schedule, plus Atlanta at home.
But whom are we kidding? The Steelers have shown no indication of being able to focus.
Even if they did recapture some of their Super magic, they would probably just fumble it away. (Steve Treu covers the Steelers for The News.)

Maybe she just not in to spewing out a bunch of Bull Sheeet like you every post. Or maybe she has conveniently disappeared after getting her butt handed to her on a constant basis in the shack. Maybe she is running her mouth too much about her "mighty" 3-6 Steelers. LMAO!!

The difference is the PC problems are true. Can't log on and talk trash if the PC is down. Christyk, disapperance is due to the Steelers losing week-after-week.

Sure I have....that's why I already have 114 posts. And I have 283 post. What's your point? Don't sit here an act like you have amnesia "Miss I disappeared for three days after the Steelers LOSS to the RAIDERS". LMAO!! I guess this was even more painful considering you said the Ravens would lose that week putting the Steelers only one game in back of the Ravens at that time. When this DID NOT happen, you conveniently pulled a David Copperfield. Now LIE and say these events did not play out like I just described. You're more of a pathetic joke than GM and Coach B - CRUSTYK!

Now LIE and say these events did not play out like I just described. WTF are you talking about Chumpy? We played the Raiders Oct. 29th. I was here the day after the game. In fact, I was here all week after the game. I never left. Go check my posts. You're losing it now, Cramps. You're not even mildly amusing anymore. <img src="/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif" alt="" />
