Browns camp sights and sounds
Thursday, August 16, 2007 3:32 AM
By James Walker

• Recap: The intensity picked up when defensive end J'Vonne Parker scuffled with starting right tackle Kevin Shaffer. A few plays later, Parker was pushed into quarterback Charlie Frye, knocking Frye over, and Parker got into another skirmish, with tackle Kelly Butler. Cornerback Leigh Bodden sat out to rest a sore right ankle. Bodden said it was precautionary, and he plans to play Saturday against the Detroit Lions.

• Day's best: Braylon Edwards made two good catches for significant yardage in team drills: a deep pass from Derek Anderson over two defenders and a 15-yard out that Edwards turned into a bigger gain.

• Position battle: Backup cornerback Daven Holly is moving up the depth chart after a good exhibition debut against the Kansas City Chiefs. Holly moved past Kenny Wright as the third cornerback and, with Bodden out, played with the starters yesterday.

• Rookie watch: Rookie quarterback Brady Quinn had his toughest outing so far, throwing two interceptions -- to linebacker Clifton Smith and cornerback Mike Adams on poor reads -- and fumbling a snap.

• Itinerary: The Browns will have one practice at 2:30 p.m. today at the training facility.

• You're invited: Today is your last chance to see the Browns practice this week. The team will have a closed walk-through Friday in preparation for the game Saturday.

• Quotable: "I thought the guys had a little energy and a little spark. Sometimes their focus wasn't exactly on what it needed to be on. Sometimes it was on their opponent that they were going against, but that's not a bad thing." -- coach Romeo Crennel, on the two fights in practice

I wonder if Holly is that good or Wright is that much of a scrub. When we picked him up I felt like he was a waste. No need. If Brandon McDonald is any good, keeping him and Gary Baxter will be hard. Wouldn't be surprised to see Kenny Wright cut

Baxter should be moved to backup FS. Cornerbacks should be Bodden, Wright, Holly, McDonald, and Minter. hehe.

So much for the post in another thread that had Brady "lighting it up" and starting on Saturday........

Well if this report is accurate (who really knows) then it would seem the post in the other thread is just wishful thinking

Did you notice, we seem to be seeing alot of that lately

He's earned this spot. Nothing but hustle and growth since he joined the team. Kenny Wright has nothing but "Time In Service" to put him ahead of Holly, and he was basically handed the position because of it... which doesn't surprise me but does go against the whole, "I'm not handing anything to anyone philosophy.". I'm glad Holly is beating him out and earning the spot.

He's turning the ball over to the third team. I really do not understand this desire to rush the kid in there. We have the perfect opportunity to allow him to develop ala Carson and this pressure to start him right away is stupid and could be detrimental in the long run, IMHO. I don't understand it, I think it's moronic and quite frankly, it sucks.

I hear ya Cal, waiting a year worked WONDERS for Phil Rivers, not to mention Drew Brees's career.

Why not do the same for Frye and Quinn.

CAL...

i used to be 1000% in your corner on this issue...these days i'm not all that convinced...

i think the key is that your OL isn't so bad that the QB gets beat down play after play...history has proven THAT stunts/kills QB development...but with our line, Quinn will have some time back there...he'll have a chance to make reads and go through his progression...he'll have at least a bit of a running game to stave off the rush...

if he were thrown in this season, would he make more mistakes than if he won the job going into year 2?...yes, i think so...but unlike a learing behind a horrible OL, i don't think that simply playing early is going to prevent a guy from reaching his potential in the long run...

look at Brees, Peyton, Benberger...all thrown in immediately, all "ok"...looks like it'll be true for Cutler and Romo, too...

the ones that notoriously failed?...Couch and Carr, most recently...both horrid expansion Olines...

all that said, i'd still prefer to let Frye start until it is absolutely obvious to everyone in the organization that Brady is running the O better in practice...

Your point is well taken about the O-line, (and thank goodness for that,) however I think several positive things could happen by sitting him out. 1) He can grow and mature as a player and as a person. 2) He can observe from the sidelines and take a perspective from an advantagous angle. 3) He can see what it's like to face our divisional opponents without facing their pass rush. (Regardless of the revamped O-line, Pitt & the Rats both have formidible pass rushers & schemes.) 4) We get to develop a solid backup in Charlie behind that decent O-line. Finally, even though the O-line is much improved, I would personally feel better if they had a year to work together before they threw a rookie QB in behind them to run the show.

I certainly understand the anxiousness to get BQ in there. I was a Brady pimp before the draft and I'm so completely pleased he is with us now, signed and in camp. I just do not see the need to rush him in there when we so obviously have the luxury to groom him and bring him a long slowly. Slow and steady wins the race. JMHO

I still think the Quinn pick was a waste. We could have picked up a good DL which would have benefited this team more this year and down the line. Quinn didnt impress me in college and he hasnt impressed me in camp yet either. I hope he does play this preseason game so people can see he isnt ready. I really hope he sits all year like Palmer or Rivers, I think this would benefit him the most.

4MVP and TYLER...

you think an 07 QB and an 08 DE will make less of an impact in 08 than an 07 DE and no new QB?

Yea I think a good solid DE would benefit this team much more than a rookie QB because it would provide some much needed depth at the position. I like Fraiser but I think he isnt the right size for the position and has trouble with the run. I think it takes 3 years for a Qb to become a solid starter. I think Frye has what it takes to be our QB and I feel the quinn pick was for the fans. If he had played anywhere else I dont think Quinn would have been as highly regarded and the media and fans look at him through rose colored glasses. Alan Branch was still available at 22 and would have been a better pick for the team to win this year and next. Quinn has major accuracy issues and I donot see him being a great NFL qb. I hope I am wrong but I dont see it happening.
If Roye goes down during the regular season How is quinn going to help us? DL depth is terrible and Our QB situation I think is solid. I would have rather seen us bring in a vet QB and use the pick on a DL or keep our pick, get E. Wright in the second and then a Michael Bush in the 3 rd. This would have been much more benfefical to our team to win this year and next. And we would have a 1st rd pick next year to help our dline and Wr position.

I'd kinda like to know how well he looked outside of those 3 plays... I'm sure he played alot more than that

to be honest, he can grow and mature if he were on the field as well...

i don't think he needs to sit out the whole year, because quarterbacks are fine in their first year (roethlisburger, smith, and lately, young, cutler, and leinart all last year)

i think brady quinn does need to see the field this year, but not at any certain point, it's not like you say "well at week 6, he should be the starter"

romeo should put quinn in, when he's able to run this team, and when he, and only he (not the media, not the fans) feels he's ready...

there is this huge backlash with quinn, maybe it's the notre dame thing, maybe it's the holdout, but we did give up two very big picks for this guy, so he is our quarterback, and we do need him to see the field and the speed of a real game as soon as possible... but as long as he sees time this year, i don't care if it's week 7 or week 17...

the only way i think you don't put him in, is if frye/anderson is absolutely lighting it up and the browns are winning... and then it's just obvious that you go with what is apparently working (and some may say a damn near miracle)

i think the entire "well quarterbacks need to sit a year" is vastly overrated

a quarterback can only be good if his team is good, and once you get players around him, you can start to see the real differences... the way cincinnati became a good team from a bad team when they made the change from kitna to palmer...

and maybe the way mcnair didn't perform with a pretty good raven team last year that was able to keep manning and co. out of the endzone...

quinn played 4 years of notre dame football, and not once did he have a complete team... bad defense... no running game, an underachieving offensive line, so it's not like he's coming from a situation that was hunky dory, quinn is a gamer, and he's battle tested...

i think he could become a pretty damn good quarterback if we build this defense up to the level of being one of the better 5 or 6 in the league, where he's not constantly playing from behind, and where he doesn't need to throw the ball 40 times a game... if you put the young man in a situation where it's not so obvious, he could be lethal...

oh, and he never had a force at notre dame like he does now with #80...

I'm not judging him on one practice, I'm judguing the Front office for bringing him in when we have bigger issues with the team than a QB. I think we should have brought in a vet QB and saved the picks for players we need at other positions. I feel like the Quinn pick was to appease fans and a dumb pick and we gave up too much to get him. I am all about optimisim however I dont think our QB esp a ROOKIE qb will help us this year or next and get us into the playoffs and help Romeo keep his job.

The funny thing is...

When I was watching the KC/Miami game they were having a similar discussion about Croyle/Huard even though this is Croyles' 2nd year.

You won't know until you play the player.

Ok, so now that we can't change the past so Quinn is a Brown I ask how many times did the Colts make it into the playoffs with a less than stellar D, It is easier to find good D deeper in the draft than it is to find a quality QB, so they gambled, will it pay off, or did they go all in and lose everything, well time will give the answer to that. The other thing about our D is this our corners are getting better, and that means Grantham will be willing to get more creative.

Another point is our O is definitely better, and if they can keep the D off the field longer to rest then they will also be better. Unfortunately we are still building, but the punch list is shorter, especially where we were two to three years ago.

It's a different perspective, and there's a lot to be said for being able to stand on the sidelines. Beyond that, your examples are (I believe) cases where the teams basically had no choice but to start their new QBs. If I'm remembering correctly, there was either no one in front of them to beat them out or the starter went down to injury. (Can't remember what the circumstance in Denver were, did Plummer get hurt?) I'm saying that, for the most part IMO, if given the choice between starting them or having them grow from the backup spot for a year, those teams would have choosen the latter.

That's the bottom line right there. He's not ready. They know it, RAC & Savage keep saying it, but no one is listening. It's all about, start Brady blah, blah, blah...

There is a good possiblilty that he will see time at some point this season. It only makes sense to insert him in certain situations as part of his development. If the game is a blowout or if the season is shot, then he more than likely goes in. But this clammoring to rush him in there when there is a) no need and b) he's not ready is counter productive. It's just the egocentric needs of some of the fan base and the press to get him in there, and does nothing to serve the overall good of the team. Fortunately, RAC won't put him in until he's ready. Unfortunately, the fans & the press are able to create undue pressure on he and the FO. Hopefully, they will ignore that and not succumb to those pressures.

Quote:

Well, that's academic, but I know what you're saying. And having said all the above, here is the caveat: If he can hands down beat out the incumbent starter, he should be in there. But Brady isn't doing that. At least, not yet. So I personally think worrying about when he starts or not is academic as well because the FO seems to have a plan to develop a corps of QBs, and it's more than likely we go into the season with Charlie at the 1 spot, AD at the 2 and BQ bringing up the rear. (At least that's my take on it.)

I don't think any of that matters because every situation is different. For the Browns, this year, right now, it seems that with the new line, a real running back, a healthy K2, a #17 who can catch and a brand new, attacking type of system, Charlie will once again get the keys. The only way he comes out of there is on a stretcher or because he isn't getting the job done, but given these new weapons and tools he now has a system designed for him to thrive in. Charlie is a gamer too, he just might surprise a few people here or at the very least, do what is asked of him and effectively operate the system. JMHO

Frye may have been lucky this year by lasting through last year he now has an Oline and has learned how not to play QB. His patience and determination have finally paid off. If you notice his last few games he was throwing a much higher percentage and not throwing ints. He was not getting as panicked and getting the ball to the WR or his outlet.

I think a smarter #1 in Edwards will also help...Frye needs help and he is getting it this year...Lewis, Thomas, Steinbach, and maybe Bentley.

Not If he keeps turning the ball over or makes the boneheaded moves he has since a rook. There is a reason why the browns drafted Quinn and gave up next years first rounder, they don't believe Charlie can do it! Mark my words Quinn will be starting by week 5, the system is coming fast to him, once he's grasped most of it he's going to look pretty good for a rookie. Im sure once he completes that first TD pass and looks good in the redzone all of his doubters will jump on the Brady train.

Several years ago, the season was shot and the fans wanted Charlie. Charlie was the answer to everyone's problem.... Why??? because he wasn't Dilfer. The fans thought that a QB change would improve the Browns, and they wanted to see what the rookie could do.

Some fans knew the problem wasn't the QB, the problem was the WRs, the OL, the Offensive scheme, an OC that wouldn't let the Dilfer audible, and the running game. With so many problems, Charlie didn't make much difference. Now we have a decent OL... ... some better receivers, a better OC... and a better running game.... Now, for some reason, no one wants to see what Charlie can do with the improvements.....

Why????

If we could trade Charlie, Anderson, and next years whole draft for Peyton Manning, there would still be people wanting to see Quinn start over Peyton simply because "Development be damned. I want to see what he can do...."

Which Smith are you talking about... Alex..??? Alex was an '05 pick.

If you look at his performance from 05.. 1 TD and 11 INT's Browns fans would have wanted to bench him.

The rest.(excluding Young). Put into a good situation with a good offense. Young is more of a runner then passer at this point in his carrer.

I think it's only right that, after what I saw tonight, I respond to all you guys and say that I now feel Brady should be allowed to get in there and mix it up with the rest of them. BQ played well enough and Frye & DA were just shakey enough to open the door for a three-way competition. Wow... who'da thunk...

Im not gonna say I told ya so, but I've watched Quinn his whole college career being a Notre Dame fan and I had about as much confidence as Charlie Weis coming into this game tonight. As I told you all Frye will never get past his turn overs, so you best stop believing that he will and jump on the BRADY TRAIN!

You told me so...??? Quinn faced NFL 3rd and fourth stringers.... about the same type of players he should have faced at Notre Dame. The Lions were in the lead, playing a prevent D, and Quinn was throwing dump offs to the running backs in the middle of the field...... My Grand mother could have done that and she's been dead since 1964.....

I want to see Quinn do well. I want to see the Browns win. Let's not anoint Quinn "GOD" until we see him walk on water.... Frye, Anderson, and Dorsey haven't walked on water yet either, but they have experienced NFL Games against another team's starters.... Two years ago, Frye looked just as impressive against 3rd and fourth stringers as Quinn looked last night....

You're still missing my point, which is Frye will never change his ways so we ought to let our QB of the future take his bumps & bruises now. If we had a reliable smart vet I'd be all for Quinn sitting the whole season, WE DON'T! Do I think BQ is going to come out and be the next Peyton Mannning right away no, but I do believe he'll give us a better chance to win then Frye who doesnt manage the game well and turns over the ball far too often.

If Frye is playing this way against the KC and Lions defense how do you think he'll fare against the Steelers and Ravens D? He's turned the ball over a few times now against subpar D's in limited time playing. Frye is not the answer, look towards the future..

Granted BQ was playing against guys that will be bagging groceries in a few weeks, but he also had limited weapons as well. He made all the reads smoothly and didnt lock on to receivers and force balls the way Frye always seems to do and always will.

Im making a prediction now and I will say I told you so when it comes to fruition. We're going to see Brady take his lumps but he will manage the game and limit turnovers far better then Frye the next two preseason games and start by week 8 If not opening day which IMHO should happen..

As I predicted in my previous post I think we're all seeing the same signs. If Quinn continues to play well in preseason and Frye continues to falter or play subpar Quinn will start opening day!

LEBRON put it succinctly...

Quote:

romeo should put quinn in, when he's able to run this team, and when he, and only he (not the media, not the fans) feels he's ready...

and my only point was that Brady MAY be the best QB on our team before the season's out...and if that's the case, there's enough talent around the QB now that inserting a rookie shouldn't be disastrous, as it is in some cases...

do you get that HALFBACK?...there's a difference between not allowing Quinn to win the job and not giving it to him before he's ready...

4MVP...

most of your post is rational, though i don't necessarily agree, but this...

Quote:

DL depth is terrible and Our QB situation I think is solid.

i have no response to that...

"Charlie is a gamer too, he just might surprise a few people here or at the very least, do what is asked of him and effectively operate the system. JMHO"

This qoute was posted before the Lions game, Ive watched Quinn his whole college career being a ND fan he will be the QB we've waited for. Im going out on another limb and saying he's going to have a great performance again this weekend vs the Broncos..

I'm not saying Frye over Quinn indefinately..... I'm saying QUINN IS NOT READY NOW..... Frye looked great in Pre-Season 2 years ago and everyone went Ga-Ga over him, now most people seem to hate him.... because the Browns underperformed with a poor OL, no running game, a bad attitude primary receiver who wouldn't learn the playbook, and an 80% GoTo TE.

Quinn missed the first 12 days of Training camp and does not know the playbook. Yes... He is catching up, but even he says he is behind the other QBs in knowledge of the playbook. That can lead to bad throws, having to look down receivers, missed handoffs, sacks, and fumbles.... Remember last year, when Anderson had to tell Edwards where to lineup ???? It is much worse when the QB doesn't know the playbook, rather than the WR.....

It would be doing Quinn, and the rest of the team, a disservice by sending him in, unprepared, or only partially prepared, against Pittsburgh, Cincinnatti, Baltimore, and New England. He can learn just as much, if not more by continuing to learn the offense, attending film breakdown meetings, and watching from the sidelines, rather than watching from the seat of his pants.....

I never believed Frye was the answer to the QB situation in Cleveland. He is the temporary answer for the first 6 games.... HOWEVER... If we're 6 - 0, or 5 -1 going into the bye week, Quinn may end up carrying a clipboard for the rest of the year....

Quinn is NFL ready and he will prove that in the next two preseason games. Like I said if we had a better option Id be all for it, ala Trent Green or even someone like Brad (old man) Johnson. We don't have that and Frye isnt going to change over night with or w/out the extra talent around him.

I really do hope Im wrong, I supported Frye untill the end of last year(even own his jersey) but nothing has showed me he'll ever change! With that said, I wanted Joe Thomas in the draft and never thought we'd get BQ. My thoughts on Brady was he's NFL ready and going to be one heck of a QB but we needed a franchise left tackle worse, especially this year and to ride the wave with Frye as bad as it would be. Now we have both and we can win with Quinn!

Lets all just see how Quinn progresses in the next few weeks and I think we'll all start to agree who the starter should be against the Stoolers...
