Are you freaking serious??? He tossed Turds all game long. He isnt a QB. He led to 3 count them 3 three and outs in overtime. He has no business even being on the field. He is a nice guy, he has been great for showing baker what to do off the field but he is horrible. You will not win games because of anything he does. It is why the Bills wanted him gone.

this wasnt even a below average performance, it was freaking putrid. He had single coverage all game long. he tried to be a stat ho but was so inaccurate, he couldnt even do that.

This is a guy that got all the reps with the ones in training camp and preseason. I am sorry but the excuses for this turdfest is absurd. He is horrible he had guys open all game long and he was afraid to throw it. the pick to Gordon shows why he isnt a QB, receiver has a good step and its so underthrown Gordon is coming back trying to break it up.

Tyrod Taylor will get Hue fired.

True... TT is a good at ball control (keeping possession). He also was trying to throw a lot of back over the shoulder balls yesterday (behind of the defender). I'm wondering if that is where the confusion btw him and Gordon took place.

Dumbest thing i've ever read....maybe true for Taylor, but all BM has ever done is win, and throws ALOT of tds while doing it.

Not saying I want Baker, but TT isn't the future (obviously)

With that weather???? C'mon give the guy a break.

What I didn't like was the inability to play the screen... but that was more on Duke than on TT.

TT's escape valve's, Njoku and Duke didn't play good games. Also think WCO in bad weather conditions is a recipe for failure, so all in all, IMHO, TT didn't play that bad, and had a very good series to tie the game.

Tyrod did what Tyrod do.

Safe with the ball. TOO safe in spots but overall you win the turnover battle. Then he runs a bunch.

IMO the INT was just a dumb play call. No long throws were working all day. Even for Roethlisberger who has a much stronger arm.

Add to that we only needed like 15 yards and it was 1st down. Bone head coaching all game.

Tyrod was not amazing, but he did what we signed him to do.

I went into this game with no preconceptions of Taylor. Only had seen a few highlights of him. Didn't go back and watch Buffalo games.

I read what Vers wrote because I asked. Having not seen Tyrod play. What he wrote was accurate at least from what I saw in this game.

In order to play the position of quarterback you have to be confident. He did not appear to me to be confident when throwing.

Watching tv it is hard to see the coverage unless they give you that view. But on the passes he threw his accuracy and ball placement was not good.

He did not show the ability to anticipate open. It looked like college when guys are open and then you throw it. There were plays in the game that if he had thrown the ball in the right place for the receiver to not break stride it would have gone for a touchdown.

I did not see him throw a guy open except for the TD to Gordon. But there were plays like that could have been made.

On screens, checkdowns, and short crossing routes, you need to be able to throw it in stride, on the money to get YAC. He did not do that.

Baker showed all pre-season that his accuracy on those types of throws was spot on.

He can run. But we knew that. I was disappointed in what I saw of him as a passer.

I was not at the game so it was hard to see how bad the conditions were (wind), turf etc. But it is not an excuse. He played in Buffalo and Baltimore and the conditions here will not be much different.

I am not ready to say "start Baker".

But if he continues to play the same game? He is not going to win games for this team.

Tyrod played very poorly, but I won't hang it all on him. Not sure how open the receivers were, what the true field conditions were, or how the weather was affecting things. How many of those under-throws were result of lack of grip on a wet ball?

Ben was obviously having issues as well, so I will right this off for Tyrod as a bad game, with more data needing to be presented.

Add in that it seems many team's offenses seemed out of sync yesterday.

i think TT will get a pass from just about anyone for this game..thats not saying he played well, or even average. But the next two weeks he needs to show he is worth sticking with. Coaches need to do a better job as well. having him throw 40 times in that game was just dumb. Thats not playing to your QB's strength..We invested alot in oline and running back to have a run game and we went almost a whole quarter and called 1 run play. Pound the ball, make them put more in the box, run PA and move taylor around a bit and let him make some rhythm throws. There just wasn't any flow to the playcalling yesterday.

I don't think you are close to right Mour...

Ben won't say it, neither will Tyrod or Hue. But weather played a role in that game. Look at what a great job Ben did yesterday.

And Ben is used to his offense. Tyrod probably isn't nearly as versed in his yet.

How many 3 and outs did Ben have? And he have a much better running game than did Tyrod.

Baker will get his chance, but not yet.

Tyrod did not have a good day passing the ball.

He did typical Tyrod things like holding the ball but also atypical stuff like that INT trying to throw a 50-50 hero ball to Gordon.

Tyrod did add value running the ball that is undeniable and it kept the Browns in the game.

And of course context matters, bad weather, new offense, facing a defense that is MORE familiar with the Browns offensive scheme then many of the Browns own players and it's the first game of the season. If you compare Ty's performance in context of say Ben's then I believe it brings a more accurate perception....but nah...bench him...lol

U know what Mourg .. u can focus only on the negative if u so choose ... TT is who he is ... u need to take a step back ... actually 3 or 4 of them ...

The bills wanted him gone ... cause of that there the WORST TEAM IN FOOTBALL and there QB situation is WAY WORSE than it was last year ... WAY WORSE ..

I’ll text 5 of my friends that are Jills fans ... GAURANTEE they’d take him back in a HEARTBEAT ...

PS. His LEGS HELPED IMMENSELY ..

He deserves to be ripped for how he threw the ball ... but u also need to not ba an agenda poster and just IGNORE what he did that was good ...

He is what he is .. but some perspective sure would be nice for a change ...

For the most part, I look at this as an opportunity cost. Not all runs of course, but a good chunk. The cost of him leaving the pocket, giving up on the play and looking for yards with his legs didn't allow us to pass down the field. There were open WRs from some of the recap stills/videos I have seen. Did he extend a couple of drives, yes. Did his play kill drives. Yes to that as well.

He just didn't look good to me. Hopefully he bounces back against NO.

At DT, context and meaning are a scarecrow kicking at moving goalposts.

Yep, you and I have talked about Tyrod several times. Yesterday, he displayed who he is.

Buffalo is in a bad spot. They traded away Taylor. They traded away McCarron, who isn't great, but played okay in Cinci. They are left w/a rookie who isn't ready and Peterman, who has thrown 7 interceptions in his two starts and only threw for 24 yards yesterday. What do you do at this point?

I also want to add something about our situation. I have read some things today that I found incredible. I read that we would have blown Pittsburgh out if Baker had played. I read that our OL was good yesterday. I read where we had wide open receivers. I read that Hue is being stubborn for sticking w/TT. I have read several positive Baker references.

I ask this: What if Baker Mayfield is not ready? He was confused by vanilla looks in the preseason. The regular season looks are completely different. He doesn't have experience under center. He doesn't have experience making a ton of pre-snap reads. He doesn't have experience going through his progressions quickly.

He has shown that he has moxie. He's shown he can move well in the pocket. He has displayed fine accuracy. He has shown he has a good arm. Those are all positive attributes moving forward.

However, would it really be beneficial for him--and the team--to play him before he is ready? Can one not remember back to just last year when we played Kizer too early. Bad habits can be developed when you aren't ready.

Dorsey drafted Mayfield, but knew to trade for Tyrod in order to give Baker time to adjust to the NFL game. Rushing him into the lineup because the fans and media want to see their shiny, new toy could have devastating consequences.

Dorsey WILL NOT succumb to any media or fan noise. Mayfield move will be made when THEY think he's ready.

Imperative Mayfield looks at game film to see differences between pre and regular season defenses. HUGE part of getting him ready.

After 2 months of saying it, I'll say it AGAIN.

How long will Haley and the crew let Taylor leave huge yards on the field before they make the move to our future?

Rain drenched sloppy ass field is not the time. But we're watching Taylor CLOSELY from here on out.

If he's STILL playing like this through week 3 and Thursdays Jets game? Countdown is ON.

And don't compare Mayfield to Kizer. Worlds apart if even from just College games started. HUGE DIFFERENCE.

If I had to take a guess, I would say that the EARLIEST we will see Mayfield, barring injury, is after the Bye.

If TT is playing well enough to have us in the thick of things, then that goes on the back burner and we don't see him until 2019.

Baker Mayfield's replacement at Oklahoma Kyler Murray looks better then Mayfield did in college, he has already won the National Player of the week award and has pretty been rolling since the year started.

Baker Mayfield is honestly nothing special. I mean come on NO ONE plays Defense in the Big 12, its a flipping joke. Every game is nearly 49-21, 63-14, etc etc....

The more I watch Kyler Murray, the more I realize Baker Mayfield is fools gold, and its the system and crappy defenses in the Big 12 more then it was Mayfield...Oklahoma doesn't even realize Mayfield is gone...if he was so great, his loss would be felt...Ask the Volunteers how they felt when Peyton Manning went to the NFL, or Stanford with Andrew Luck...it was a big blow to those teams to lose those guys, Baker Mayfield? Not so much...

the Browns are very very lucky to have Tyrod Taylor....else we wouldn't even be competitive.

I want Baker to succeed here, but the more OK games I watch, The more of murray I see, the more I think Mayfield was the product of crappy Big 12 defenses, and a very system friendly place at OK that seems like they cna plug any Qb in their and make them look great...simliar to how Devenr was putting out 1000 yard rushers like a dime a dozen during the Shanahan years..

What nonsense.

What BM did at OK is ancient history. He's already shown potential in the NFL. He's already graded out better than any other rookie drafted in the 2018 draft. That's by an independent source ... PFF

A simple lie. I hated Manziel and Weeden was a 'meh' pick. I guarantee that's true of many/most. But since you don't like Baker Mayfield and can't or won't talk about what he has done as a Cleveland Brown - go ahead and try to trash him by lumping him in with past busts. LOL. Weak agenda much??

I am not going to make a decision about Tyrod as qb based upon a game where the elements were awful and had to affect his performance and his offensive line did a crappy job protecting him. let’s see how he does with some decent protection next week.

A lot of factors converged to produce yesterday's performance. A combination of weather, playcalling, offensive execution (the run blocking and pass blocking were sporadic, at best) extremely conservative QB play, unforced errors and general lack of cohesion. Taylor can't continue to hold the ball as long as he did yesterday. I think the Steelers pass coverage kept the receivers bottled up.

He did have some desperately needed completions on the drive leading to Gordon's TD.

He isn't a Quarterback who can put the team on his back and take over a game. On the other hand, because Taylor wouldn't take risks the team was able to stay in the game with a chance to win at the end.

The offense as a unit didn't do enough. It wasn't all on Taylor. He has to be better and they have to get the other execution issues fixed also.

Biggest thing is going to be coaching to TT strengths to allow him to be successful. Its what they should be doing..He's not a gunslinger down the field guy, so why make him one.. play the short game and go down the field 10 yards at a time

what exactly has BM done in the NFL? He has done nothing but play a few dress rehearsal games.

the Browns and fans don't know how lucky we are have Tyrod Taylor. Trust me, Haley and Jackson do though. Its the reason Jackson and Haley both promptly brushed off any talk of Mayfield after the game. Jackson said he done everything right in those conditions.

Taylor outplayed Rothlisberger in horrible conditions...

Taylor
197 passing yards and a TD
77 rushing yards and a TD
1 int

Rothlisberger
335 passing yards
1 TD
4 Ints
1 lost fumble

Tyrod as bad as things were outplayed Rothlisberger.

Taylor was running for his life most of the game and showed heart...Baker Mayufield would have been CRUSHED yesterday under that Steelers pass rush. Mayfield is slow, he got chased down by a 60 pound overweight fat cop who needed another donut, TJ Watt would have shelved that kid for the season.

I want Mayfield to sit this year because he has BUST written all over him...his physical attributes don't scream franchise QB to me. Everyone talks about Brees being 6'1 but Brees has one hell of an arm, a far, far, far better arm then Mayfield has, Brees has a flipping cannon that throws lasers...Mayfield has what I would call an average arm, good enough to get the job done if you got everything else, sadly Mayfield doesn't have everything else.

Mayfield could still work out to be a decent QB for us...Kosar didn't have all world physical attributes either, but Mayfield needs time to sit, learn, and devise his craft in ways to make things work in the NFL, and he isn't doing that this year.

If we have start Mayfield anytime in the near future we will be lucky to win 3 games...we would have lost by 30 yesterday if Mayfield was playing instead of Taylor. kid would got destroyed.

Like I said - you are interjecting nonsense into your posts.

I've no problem with some of your comparisons between TT and Ben and yes, Ben had a horrendous game. But saying we're lucky to have TT because you've pronounced BM a virtual bust is poppycock.

Ben threw for over 300 yards on the same field. He made some great plays under tough conditions.

What hurt him obviously was the pressure. And honestly I don't care who the quarterback is; if pressure is applied from different spots (outside, then up the middle) consistently all quarterbacks can look bad.

Hard to say yet on Ben this year if he still has the ability to get away and extend.

This year will be interesting from the standpoint of aging quarterbacks.

Ben, Brees, Rivers, Brady great quarterbacks getting up there. You have the mind but sometimes the body won't respond.

I have said this before when healthy nobody has played quarterback better than Aaron Rodgers. Yesterday's performance on one leg was astounding. Not many can throw off one leg with anticipation and accuracy.

I had heard about Tyrod's reputation. But I wanted to see him with this team in this offense. And from yesterday's performance his reputation was accurate.

I agree with your sentiment, and he is a potential weapon. He is not the go-to guy if he can doesn't have the catch production. He is an ugly physical matchup problem for all defenders. If he catches the ball. And we seemed to kill drives when he didn't. Doing something different until he comes along more seems prudent. Any score would have helped.

I think, barring injury, that bye week timetable seems wise. Some stuff has to come together for our starting units. Barring injury, if BM starts then, I want some of the froth and shakiness out of the offense before he steps in. Then so be it if we feel he is ready.

Yup, but he still struggled.
If anything, this game just highlights that Tyrod is not Ben.

Tyrod is going to be just fine here, but anyone expecting him to play like Ben, Rodgers, or whatever, is going to be severely disappointed.

Tyrod is adequate, but limited (whether that limitation is between his ears or in his "arm" doesn't matter). Limited shows as more limited in poor conditions. That's all, nothing more.

Yes, with a better QB, we probably would have won.
With the better QB, they still couldn't win... and part of that is the play of our lesser QB.

That's HUGE for us going forward.

I truly agree with this. He couldn't have sorted all the blitzes out. He did seem to have trouble with vanilla reads in the preseason. Just not ready yet.

Do you play him at all? Just to get film and some experience? I do not like the prospect of forcing him in because of an injury start, especially mid-game.

TT is not a bad weather QB. He just isn't. He flat out doesn't have the arm talent for it. That being said he threw plenty of balls on the money that got dropped too. NJ sucked it the whole game. TT was hitting him right in the hands and he was still dropping it. We picked up steam when TT stopped looking for NJ. When he went back to him he derailed again.

Joe shut down Gordon like an old bad habit. He got away with defensive holding, face masking, and PI a good bit too. When Joe got hurt is when we made our comeback. Coincidence? Not likely.

TT will shine when he can safely make rhythm passes on short to intermediary routes and only occasionally go deep. I have a feeling though that by the time we play the Jets that TT and Gordon will find a rhythm and start to put up some big numbers. I mean those two didn't even have the preseason to work together.

It really hurt our run defense not to have Meder out there. Pit took full advantage of it too. What bugs me is why did we not try to run the ball to the left by Joel. He is our best offensive lineman but we are not going to let him runblock for us? Instead we constantly ran the ball to our right where the worst part of our o-line is.

Ben is Historically a slow starter, especially with little preseason work. Read Ray Fittipaldo's column in the Post Gazette. No one in Pittsburgh seems to be too concerned. No one screaming for the backup QB, even with Ben having 3 INTs and 2 fumbles. Too us, that outing would have had us screaming for the backup, trade the OL, trade Artie Burns.. etc To them, just a bad day at the office.

Taylor should not have had to throw 40 passes. He looked confused and held the ball way too long. He doesn't trust his arm. If we are going to insist Taylor is our QB then we must help him by running the ball effectively while using more play action passing. Taylor is who he is and that won't change much. He was brought here so we wouldn't have to play our rookie QB too soon. I am hoping Taylor can do the job he was brought here for but he must get a lot of help from a strong run game to be effective. 40 pass attempts is not his game.

I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

It’s not that he was holding it too long, it was that he was caught up in the moment, trying to savor it for all it was worth.

j/c:

So Bard is the only person who agrees w/me that there is a possibility that Baker isn't ready yet? Y'all think it is easy to go from not making reads to facing complex NFL defenses?

And someone actually used preseason grades to prove a point? LMAO

Diam, some of the things I warned you about in your Optimism thread are already occurring and we haven't even lost a game yet.

interesting discussion.
