Not many would expect Eric to get in......Clay, he is close, but no cigar. Not going to happen. Maybe old timers if he hold high enough, long enough.
Gene Hickerson was way better than Clay, position for position, and he didn't get in until he was deep in dementia and near dead.
I think if you block for what was it, two HOF running backs and one of them is Jim Brown, you go in when they do. Especially when you're on the same team for that long.
That being said, I think Clay is overdue.

Eighteen finalists will be presented to the full 48-member Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee during its annual meeting on “Selection Saturday,” the day before Super Bowl LIII. The finalists will consist of 15 Modern-Era finalists, the recently named Senior Finalist, Johnny Robinson, and the Contributor Finalists, Pat Bowlen and Gil Brandt.
The Selection Committee will meet on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 in Atlanta, Ga. to elect the Class of 2019. While there is no set number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process by-laws provide that between four and eight new members will be selected.
The Senior Finalist and Contributor Finalists are voted “yes” or “no” for election at the annual selection meeting and must receive at least 80 percent support from the Committee to be elected. The Modern-Era Finalists will be trimmed during the meeting from 15 to 10 and then from 10 to 5. The remaining five finalists will be voted on individually, “yes” or “no” and must receive the same 80 percent positive vote as the Senior and Contributors Finalists to earn election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Class of 2019 will be announced during the “NFL Honors” nationally broadcast award show that evening.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2019 will be formally enshrined on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019 in Canton. The enshrinement is one of three marquee events, along with the Hall of Fame Game and the Concert for Legends, that are held in the spectacular Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium during Enshrinement Week Powered by Johnson Controls.

Tony Gonzalez, Champ Bailey, and Ed Reed are all locks to make it on the first ballot. I think only seven get in total. I'd take Edgerrin James, Torry Holt, Isaac Bruce, and Steve Hutchinson.
I see no way that Clay or Metcalf make it in ... at least this year.
I agree with Gonzalez, Bailey, and Reed. I also see George, Bruce, Ward, and Rice. Man, there are a ton of great players in there. It seems to get harder and harder to figure out who will make it, because there are so many deserving players.

I agree, Clay should be in the HOF. In a way, I think his longevity is held against him in that people think of him as "a stats compiler" and not a guy who flashed, making highlight plays over a 6-7 year span. Well, Clay made plenty of big plays, but they were spread over a career that lasted 18 years at one of the most physically challenging positions in football. Clay started 16 games at the age of 39 for the Falcons. He recorded a sack at the age of 40. At an age when most of his peers were broken down and long retired, Clay was still going up against monstrous OTs and TEs, still covering speedy RBs in the flat, still taking on crackback blocks which were common in his era, and he was still getting after the QB. That kind of endurance and ability has to be recognized. This was no aging decrepit QB like George Blanda at the end, or 43-yr old Lou Groza trundling down the field in kickoff coverage. Clay was a starter at OLB in the NFL at the age of 39. If you think about it, its really amazing. Enshrine Clay Jr now.

Knew he was very good in his time (thanks for the INT in playoff game versus Bills), but I didn't know his numbers were that impressive. Hell yeah, he's a hall of famer.

Clay should been in many many years ago. Clay was not the face of the D,always used differently in all situations,whereas Seau or all others played one position and were advertised as their teams Dee being asked to do one task only whereas Clay was asked to move in/out perform different tasks. When Clay here The Dawgs in secondary where our face. Other note Clay was not a NFL suits hype poster boy as where the others,so no nationwide visablity on the networks,papers,off field negative trouble ect. You figure his kin Bruce Matthews in HOF and son,Clay111 should be pushing for him. Most of the voters on selecting committee only want the poster boys in now. Senior committee should be allowed to enshrine more than just 2 as more players from that time era are more worthy of enshrinement. Especially OLmen example: Dick Shrafreth,Jim Ray Smith,Monte Clark. Gary Collins should be in has comparable numbers to some in HOF and he was p;aying when teams preferred to run ball and also was our punter.
