Well, today I decided to stop stealing wireless internet from my neighbors and actually purchase it myself. I'm looking for internet that is fast enough to watch the Browns online with out it having to buffer every 2 minutes. I also need it for a good price. I don't really understand connection speed, so would you all mind referring me to the best places to get a quick connection for a decent price?

Stating your location probably would achieve greater results.

LOL, good point. Portland Indiana. I would love to do this myself, but I'm not familiar at ALL with internet connection speed. I know a lot of you on here are.

Really? A cable modem will run you from 35-45 bucks a month. People in my area have problems with DSL. Anything less won't get you the buffer free streaming video.

Ok, so cable is the most solid, affordable plan? What should I look for with speed?

It depends on the amount of users in your location that is also on cable.
The greater the users the more bandwidth it will suck down with it.

Anything over 4mbps will get you what you want. I briefly went to 10 from 7 and didn't notice an appreciable difference on my machine.

If you want to stream video, you'll need a high speed connection. (DSL or Cable) The very minimum speed you should consider is 768 Kbps, but for a minimal difference in price, the 1.5 Mbps, or even a 5 Mbps package should be considered. (using RoadRunner local package specs) ATT offers a variety of packages as well. Shop around your local area. For $25-40 per month you should be able to get a fast to super fast connection, and for $15-20, a somewhat less high speed connection.

Also, now they make these wonderful installation cd's that come with the modem (if you end up getting a wireless modem). Make sure to secure that sucker with a password so noone can get into it like you are with your neighbors. The passwords are so easy to set up now that anyone should be able to accomplish doing it. And you can set your machine to remember the password so you don't have to keep putting it in every single time.
If you don't go with a wireless modem, you can always pick up a wireless cable router at Best Buy or any electronic store like that.

with wireless if its password only your still at risk, add MAC filters and and change the SSID to something that only you would know , much much harder to hack....

Actually, that doesn't make it all that much more difficult to hack at all.
Anyone out there that is "war driving' trying to hack your wireless will know how to spoof a MAC address, and quite likely the software they are using to sniff the wireless packets will have integrated MAC spoofing... and as long as you are still broadcasting your SSID, it is irrelevant what you change it to.
Changing it AND stopping broadcast of it, now THAT will help in the "security by obscurity" department.... but just changing it won't do much except help you find your network if you are browsing for it in an area with more than one available wireless network.

We've got a lot of security stops on ours....but then again we have all the time in the world to set them up seeing as how we have no furniture, tv's, or anything in our apartment yet. Right now we only have folding camping chairs and our laptops, lol. You're average user isn't going to hack into your account. I was just saying that it is easy to set up a password now that he should be easily able to do it. Your hacks are pretty much going to be able to get in no matter what. I am able to do it with a little bit of time. While we were waiting for ours to show up, I was going to do it until I found an unsecured network in the area. Thats what a password does, it lessens the number of people who will get into freeloading off of your account.....just like what he has been doing

What I did with mine was first off I run a full Windows 2003 Active Directory Domain at home. I set up RADIUS on the domain controller. Then, my access point is able to use RADIUS authentication (Proxim AP-600b/g). So, you have to pass valid network credentials to the AP, which then passes it to the RADIUS server which authenticates you against the domain cotroller. On top of that, it requires a certificate be installed on the machine, hehe. THEN, the encryption, while the key is provided automatically, re-keys itself every 5 minutes AND the SSID is not broadcast. You MIGHT be able to get it, but you arene't staying long, lol Of course, it got REALLY secure when I just turned the damn thing off.

You can by a Linksys cable modem at BestBuy, Office Depot, OfficeMax, Staples, Comp USA, ect.
With most cable internet, just plug it in nowadays and it will walk you through online setup. No need to even call them anymore, or wait for installation.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

It took them a week to come and hook up our cable and internet but it's going to take them 3 weeks to get some furniture in this place (although we did get some pretty amazing deals at Ashley Furniture)....which sucks because my desktop computer arrives on Monday. Oh yeah, and my car should be here in about a week.

But you need to download the player here: player

Sattelite internet can be ok depending on what you are using your internet for . If you are a gamer it is no good because your download is fast but your upload is dial up speed. If you are using internet for viewing web pages or downloading porn errrr I mean music sattelite is fine.

Wow I have a lot to learn. I just started attending school to obtain my degree in computer IT / networking. Right now I am just taking a few of my general studies classes but will start actual IT classes next semester. I hope prpl and con wont get sick of me leaning on their knowledge Quote:

Based on their copyright statements I don't see why they wouldn't play the regular season.
I'll look into it further.

Ahh that sucks man, but moving from FLA to Montana you will have that.
I finally got AT&T to hook me up on Wednesday finally. I do everything online and never realized how much it sucks not being able to go online. They dropped my DSL order b/c a working number was blocking it,,which happened to be the number they gave me for some reason, lol. An hour on the phone and finally I will be hooked up.

Don't know what kind of connection you have - and for that matter, I only know I have DSL - don't know the speed. But for the first pre season game this year I watched it here in my office on sopcast. The video quality wasn't HD, nor was it even regular t.v. quality, but it was pretty good, I must say. Plus, I got to see the game!
It was a little behind the real time game. I only know this cause I was bouncing back and forth between sopcast and the chat feature on here, but like I said, I got to see it. Maybe 3 times throughout the whole game did I "lose" contact due to buffering issues, and even then, it was for just a few seconds - up to 20 seconds.
When the Browns aren't on my local stations this year, I'll be sopcasting. I even did it last year, when all I had was dial up. I missed quite a few plays, but I got to watch much of the game. With DSL, it's much improved. (duh - obviously)

Unfortunately, if you're talking the local Toledo stations, we're in the Lions home area. Fortunately, the local stations know that most of the viewers are Browns fans. The only time we have a problem is when the Lions are away at an AFC opponent the same time the Browns are on (unless we're playing an NFC opponent at home), or if the Browns are playing away at an NFC opponent the same time the Lions are on (unless they're playing an an AFC opponent at home or are blacked out with a home NFC opponent...not uncommon). This doesn't happen very often, maybe we'll miss one game a year. I haven't yet compared us to the Lions schedule to see if we'll miss any games this year.

Ah, you're pretty right about what you said. I know, since I started watching the Browns, I haven't had to miss many games.............now, there was a stretch there for a while when I was attending all the home games, but I still was able to tape them and watch again when I got home.
I'm going to say the Browns haven't been on t.v. here, the toledo stations, but maybe twice in the last 7 years?????
It doesn't happen often, that the Browns aren't on, but on occasion.
Sad thing is, 104.7 didn't renew the radio contract this year - at least that's my understanding..........so, for me, there's no radio broadcast going on. That's why sopcast is a good thing, as far as I'm concerned.
