So the other day my brother brought home some Durian from his girlfriends house for the family to try, and I have to say that Durian is by far the worst thing I've ever smelled/eaten ever. It smelled like urine and tasted no better, which prompted me to do a quick Wikipedia search for this wonderful fruit; which descibed the fruit with two very polarizing quotes: Quote:
The five cells are silky-white within, and are filled with a mass of firm, cream-coloured pulp, containing about three seeds each. This pulp is the eatable part, and its consistence and flavour are indescribable. A rich custard highly flavoured with almonds gives the best general idea of it, but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream-cheese, onion-sauce, sherry-wine, and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid nor sweet nor juicy; yet it wants neither of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect. It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop. In fact, to eat Durians is a new sensation worth a voyage to the East to experience. ... as producing a food of the most exquisite flavour it is unsurpassed.
And this little gem:
Quote:
... its odor is best described as pig-[excrement], turpentine and onions, garnished with a gym sock. It can be smelled from yards away. Despite its great local popularity, the raw fruit is forbidden from some establishments such as hotels, subways and airports, including public transportation in Southeast Asia
Wiki Durian
But this brought up an idea for a thread; what is the worst tasting/smelling thing that you have eaten or came acrossed others eating and enjoying?
I wish to wash my Irish wristwatch......

Oh....so many.. Green Beans is by far my least favorite food. Blech. I can't remember who made it, I know it wasn't my Mom, but I swear it was the worst lasgnana ever, and I like lasgnana.

In college my Roomate and I would rotate who cooked each night.
He decided that he was going to make his moms fettuccine Alfredo. So he went to the store to buy the supplies. In the recipe it called for whipping cream. He came home with Cool Whip.
When He showed me I sent him back to the store and told him that whipping cream was next to the milk in a carton. Of course he did not find it. Instead he came back with Redi Whip.
I told him that this was wrong, but he decided he was going to go ahead and make the alfredo sauce with the Redi Whip. "How much coudl it hurt it has whipping in the title was his response.
Needless to say that was the worst pasta I have ever had. I could barely get it too my mouth and was able to swallow the first bite out of respect begrudgingly. Luckily after two he decided that it was time to order a pizza. Although I kept tasting that bite all evening and thought I was going to throw up.
THat was the worst meal I ever had.

Unfortunately, as in my heritage, passed down from the days of slavery, when slave masters would feed their slaves the scraps of whatever they slaughtered to eat....the worst food in the world...Chitterlings (pronounced chit-lins) aka pig's intestines...frickin disgusting. My mom makes them every year for New Year's and I have to tell her, we're not on a plantation anymore...we don't have to eat scraps...get a steak!

I've always wondered what a chitlin was, and what it tasted like.
I'd have to say the worst thing I've ever tasted is simply, liver.

Believe it or not, I like chitlins. Put some Franks Red Hot on 'em, and they're good. I also like liver. I guess I'm just weird like that lol.

Is something "good" if you have to put so much hot sauce on it that you can't taste it?

Worst food I've ever eaten was Jellyfish when I was in China. There were plenty of things there I didn't like... but that took the cake.. mmmm cake...
It wasn't just because it was Jellyfish either.. We hated the taste and texture BEFORE we knew what it was.
I have heard of Durian before, but never smelled/tasted one. I have seen a few documentaries on the learning channel about them, and how hotels have to ban tourists from bringing them into the buildings. If someone does bring one in, they have to shut down the entire floor to fumigate!

I've never had Chitterlings but I used to work in a Meat Department just after high school and after seeing that stuff and I would never put it in my mouth. That had to be the worst smelling thing ever. I can't imagine what it smells like while cooking.

I have an iron stomach. I really do, I can eat just about anything and not feel bad.
I had Popeyes chicken from a reststop somewhere in Alabama and threw up all night long in the hotel room.
Worst food experience of my life.

I've always learned to never ask what you're eating or where it's from. If you knew any of that, you would never eat again. I've had food from Russia, Africa, Costa Rica... again, don't ask too many questions.

I can eat almost anything, but if you put a plateful of Hamburger Helper in front of me, I'm heading for the door. The smell alone is all it takes.....must be some remnant of a childhood nightmare.

You should try some bar-b-qued monkey meat in the Phillipine Islands.....it actually taste pretty good after a few San Miguels!
I have had Kim Chee......and could not get passed the first bite.....yik!
Chit-lins are the worst smelling things...........next to an over heated dumpster!
I once had a burrito in Mexico.....it was pretty crappy....and was loaded with small bones.......hopefully not chopped up dog bones!
It is always a risk when eating food overseas.....you just never know for sure what your eating and the hygiene issue is always scarey as hell!

LOL, I hate the stuff also.. I had it when I was about 9.. Not looking forward to eat it, I put it in the china cabinet drawer, where about 1 year later, my dad thought the cat crapped in the cabinet, LOL.. I just forgot to discard it following the " At Home " version of " Fear Factor "..

You got food poisoning, because Popeye's chicken is good stuff. The worst food I have ever eaten is hominy, who wants to eat lye?

Ndutyme is right...chitterlins suck and blow all at the same time...but.......
when in college in the late 60s I was broke all the time...had to live in dorms as a condition of scholarship...and worked any odd job I could get.
Used to win money by eating a glass full of any food or gross item- ex. cig butts -they could find. Rich kids kicked ina buck a piece to see the retard, poor guy eat that stuff without puking. Never did either.
Chitterlings, sardines and sauerkraut-----mmmmmm!!

Yeah, it's also my least favorite of the deer type creatures. Still, it's a lot better than bear meat.
