The beginning of an ERA!

This kid Mayfield didn't take one rep with the number ones, Hue almost to a fault completely remained all in with TT no matter what happened. My fear is that if TT did not get a concussion (never wish a player hurt) he would have kept bringing out TT to play. When asked about Mayfield at Half time...he didn't compliment him he just stated "did you feel the electricity"

I am a Hue backer all the way but I now want to see him go all in with Baker the way he did with TT.

Back to what I saw. A horrific performance by TT as he only dinked and dunked and refused to go downfield. He had a speedy Calloway with a go pattern on the seem and he woefully under threw it. Then what upset me most was he was admonishing Calloway for not coming back and catching it with his hands. That was it for me. I had been screaming from early on.
Get him out of there we have a Franchise QB just waiting to win for us and you continue with the TT experiment. We came out throwing but to no avail. TT looked like the rookie as he was quick to bring the ball down lower the head and run. I agree that is probably his best asset but not how we can win games.

Then when TT went down my wifes screams GOOD! I wanted to admonish her but she loves me so much and she knows my wish was to have Mayfield come in. But I wanted it to be via Hue's decision not by an injury! Then I got super nervous. Can the kid actually pull out a win. We had the Jets spotted with a 14-0 lead and they had complete control of the LOS.

Darnold didn't show me much except that he is an excellent athlete but I was so frustrated cause he would make play after play with a 0 route, bubble screen, no more than one yard from the LOS.

Again our defense came out to play.

Speaking of injury, for the first time I wanted a player injured and it was Crowell as after his 2nd TD he goes and wipes the ball on his butt and then throws it into the stands.

Our D kept their composure but you can tell they were not going to let him get diddly from there on in.

So in comes Mayfield and he starts it off with a pass over 10 yards, no dink or dunk from this kid.

Not mentioned by the announcers was that there was a pretty good WIND out there as in halftime you can see the papers flying and the young lady's hair being blown. The kid is making these laser throws in a strong wind.

74% completion in a strong wind with most of the passes being over 10 yards downfield and there were 3 dropped passes to boot.

Joe Thomas was with the team of analyzers and he got Bush so revved up for the Browns it was a fun thing to watch.

When Mayfield came in with minutes left in the first half I loved the cheers I felt bad for TT as they were calling for Mayfield and booing him from the first quarter on. The team just caught on fire after his first completion. I don't think anyone was happier than Landry...finally an accurate QB for the first time of his career. Keep in mind I don't think Mayfield has thrown one pass to Landry from Training camp forward, they had no clue who each other was. There was a nice 10 hitch pattern having Landry sitting in the zone. Mayfield going through his progressions quickly threw a Laser chest high to Landry, he just had no clue how fast that ball was going to get there. He only knew of the TT lollipop throws. Tight spiral with good spin it reached his chest before he could get his hands up and our star WR dropped it. Mayfield didn't bat an eye just went on with his game and what a game it was.

The OL was fired up, our Running game came alive. I'm also so happy for Carlos Hyde as it was his Birthday and very soon the birthday of his Child as he left the game quickly to go to the hospital as his wife was in Labor!

Again I don't like the play calls of the nature where you should have success of one thing and get the D to over play that success and then you do the trick play....Well we tried to get the trick plays in without the SET UP...this was with TT in and I can see Haley was actually desperate cause we were needing trickery instead of execution of football plays.

We were the disciplined team, us, the youngest team in the NFL and instead it was the Jets losing their cool making costly penalties. One of which was on our 2 point conversion in the 3rd quarter to tie the game. We didn't look good on our first attempt but there were flags thrown...off setting penalties and a do over.

Finally a trick play that was set up as we made a toss to Duke going to the right with a reverse in action as Duke got the ball to Landry coming to the left and him being a left in perfect position to make a throw a nice throw it was to Mayfield who showed that he is a good athlete as he secured the ball and got our 2 points...good call.

Defense, 3 more turnovers that makes 11 in 3 games again all of last year showed us 13 turnovers.

The defense was pretty strong but as TT was floundering with the Offense it looked as if our Defense was getting tired and I would say it was more a MENTAL tiring not a physical one in nature.

I tried to explain to all about Mayfield how his dynamics was not only in his passing game but he is a great leader, he has the ability to make all believe that they are going to win and turn it up another level and get focused.

What we saw transform before our EYES was a team that went with ??? on if they could win a game to THIS IS WHAT WE DO, Win and play like winners. The defense with new life played an excellent game and outside of some YAC on short passes they pretty much closed down the offense and each time Crowell touched the ball he was shut down with maybe 2 yards here and there. He did catch the ball and got some yardage that way. But man o man was I pissed when he did what he did. And he was a coward cause he did it when he thought the game was over.
In usual fashion the Browns were going to lose in comes Mayfield and that sensation will never be seen again.

Instantly we are WINNERS and believe. I love Mayfield in the pocket, his strength to elude being tackled but never looking to run, always to pass.

Our rookie Harrison seemed to benefit the most with Mayfield. He seemed so so excited and the kid with all that talent had a new found focus and really elevated his game.

Smith (50) is a beast in the Run game. And Avery matches up well with him as he would come in when it was obvious passing downs.

Garrett was again dominate, the Jets had to put more than one hat on him and you can see the Jets were quick to move that pocket over to the right as far away from Garrett as possible.

Schobert is so so good making the calls and knows the opponents well. His loss of weight has made him a better football player and he missed an INT but got one later as Darnold was hit in his follow though.

Peppers got dinged again but the kid is an excellent tackler I hope his nay sayers realize how good he is playing. We did miss Kirksey. Coley and Larry had an excellent game in the middle. Garrett got his 2 sacks in. Hopefully we will heal up before our next game as we got 10 days of rest.

Oh and I saw an ugly but efficient kicking game as our NEW Kicker hit knuckleball after knuckleball in between the uprights with almost each one having me go...NO A MISS! Don't forget the WIND that was in true fashion.

Our only black eye, special teams with the blocked punt on Colquitt who had a great game outside of that as we did a good job on field position keeping us in it. But the blocked punt, the rookie Chubb missing a block but I also didn't like the fact that 82 was looking at nothing coming from the left and he could of instead seen the overload on our right and be there to help. Charles (82) did make some nice blocks in the run game.I did not see 88 Fells out there. Good to see Njoku come alive and all of a sudden have HANDS as he was a different WR with Mayfield in.

Well our Mayfield dynasty has started. Now you all know what I was talking about regarding the kid.

What did you all see???

Defense wins championships. Watson play your butt off!

You nailed it Eo. Great points.

Biggest thing for me (focusing on Baker) his ability to throw an accurate deep ball and his ability to throw the ball quickly - opens everything up and impacts everything on offense. That one young man improves the running game, the passing game, the OL (because he gets rid of the ball AND because they are not overwhelmed) - Baker even made his OC look night and day better.

It's one game - but it was against a really good D. We found a way to win - made plays when it counted. Momentum was ALL with the Jets until Baker (and Ward) made their plays.

Baker Mayfield changed my opinion on some of the QB's we've missed on in the past. I always looked at the team and thought any QB was doomed if they came to Cleveland and Wentz and Watson would have struggled here and we would have ruined them .... well I think last night showed that if you have the right QB - it elevates and changes the rest of the team.

Finally - mad props to the D. Really exciting.

Joe Schobert: 3 games, 23 tackles, 1 INT and 2 fumbles recovered and 3 passes defensed. He's also the on field QB for the defense.

I am excited to see his his career continues to develop. Gregg Williams just raves about the guy.

i agree with most you said, but i think Hue did compliment baker with the "electricity" comment. Hue already knew what time it was bro. The future has arrived, and We all know Hue is just being polite to TT. But Baker is our starter now. we will probably play the game next week about who's starting, but we all know its gonna be Baker.

I saw a rookie QB come in and not only electrify the team, but the entire city, nevermind the stadium. man it was like watching a funeral service with TT. and it really sucks saying that cause TT....i mean the guy did what he could and got the bills to the playoffs for crying out loud. he'll have my respect and he's a good dude.

but the future is Baker and its time to make a run.

I saw yet again why Dorsey paid Juice. that catch near the goal line was absolutely stunning. I saw Njoku actually make catches and not drop anything. we can see the clear chemistry that Baker and Higgins have.

I saw an O line actually play to their contracts once baker got in. a lot of that has to do with baker getting the ball out WAY quicker, but the O line pass blocked and really picked up the run blocking as well in the 2nd half.

and I saw our defense....man...i dunno what to say. 11 takeaways in 3 games.

and 9 sacks in 3 games, folks. and we have to remember that we're not fully healthy! We need ogbah, Kirksey, and Burgess back. we're not even at full force in the front 7, and we are TERRORIZING offenses.

we didn't hear our secondary and thats a good thing. our DB's pretty much had blanket coverage on the jets receivers. they weren't allowed to eat. their best WR enunwa had 4 catches for 57 yards. Ward absolutely muscles that fumble out, and it was a thing of beauty.

Obunjobi and Garrett....we're strong up front. However, I also saw that Garrett really needs to work on his run blocking. he is getting killed in that aspect and its a huge concern, we have to be real about that. he got exposed, and hopefully thats a point of emphasis during practice week.

overall....I saw the future. and it looks bright!

First and foremost i saw a WIN ... and a come from behind win at that ...

I saw a QB who gave his stud WR a chance to make a play ... Vice Grips rewarded him ... we all know what that means and how important that is ... those guys are gonna love the fact he has the FAITH IN THEM TO MAKE PLAYS ....

That so HUGE as u well know my brother ....

HATS OFF TO U AND DEVICE .... thumbsup ... it was only one game .... but what a game ...

I saw a QB making play after play on 3rd down ... 3rd and 10 ... 3rs and 12 ... WE GOTS THIS ...

I saw a QB with pocket awareness and just enough atheleticsm to get out of harms way ... that ply where he stepped up, went right and imeeeiagtely had to take a step backward and then out the escape hatch ... then eyes up and downfield immediately ... buys time going to the sideline at just the right pace to give the play as much time as possible .... then the reciever in rthe scramble drill knows where to go on the sideline the give Bake a chance and Bake like its nothing hits him where it needs to be ...

I was players with TALENT make PLAYS ...

On D are u kidding me ... good lord ...

11 takeaways ... WOW ...

Wards all ready a stud ..... long long way to go .... if the vote was taken right now he wins Rooke of the year in a landslide .... IT NOT EVEN CLOSE .... hopefully another rookie can give him a run for his money .... wink

Oh man ... OBI ... what a 2nd year jump he’s taken .... HOLY CRAP .... mans turned into a beast ...

Only thing i was upset at was the fact we couldn’t defend the WR screen ... they gotta get way better at that realy quick ....

I saw a D that in the first half was getting run all over at will to the outside cause there DE’s REFUSED TO SEAL .... 2nd half was a different story ... thumbsup

I saw a QB that had u believing on the last drive ... I felt nervous (thought i was gonna have a heart attack actually ... ) but U just knew how it was going to end ...

It was only one game but i saw a QB that gives us HOPE .....

GOOD LUCK BAKE .... Thank U for last night .... thumbsup

Dead nuts accurate.

I was one who wanted Chubb over Ward. I'm over it. Kudos to Dorsey on this pick. I still think DL needs more help, but we'll make due I think...

I got lost in the wake of Bake... How is Burgess?

I saw:

--Taylor really struggled. He missed some easy throws. He held the ball too long. He looked dejected. The O looked incompetent w/him at the helm.

--The fans annoyed me w/their early booing. Hell, they only gave a golf clap after Taylor ran 22 yards for a first down.

--Mayfield played very well. He gave the team a huge spark. He got rid of the ball way quicker than Taylor did. He was accurate. The moment was not too big for him. He looked like a leader.

--Chubb is a liability as a blocker. That effort on the punt block was inexcusable.

--Ward is the real deal. Can't believe Williams and some posters questioned his tackling ability. He is an excellent tackler. He flashes on the screen. He plays faster than other guys.

--Ogunjobi is really studding out. He is very quick. He gets great penetration.

--Myles showed why he was the first pick in the draft. He's a difference maker.

--Mitchell had another solid game. He was a great acquisition by Dorsey.

--Hue's game management was superb. His ability to keep this team together is astounding. This team plays w/a ton of energy. I know they won't do it, but I really think the fans need to get off his case and support this team instead of talking about firing the guy.

--Hyde ran very hard and helped us win the game. Great day for him.

--The OL wasn't very good. Too many quick pressures. We can't have our qbs taking so many hits.

--Schobert had another excellent game. He is very active and has good instincts.

--The kicker looked shaky, but he made them. Thank goodness.

--Colquit is an excellent punter. One of the best in the league.

--Williams did a nice job of confusing Darnold. You could see the look of confusion on Sam's face for much of the game.

--Coming from 14 down to win the game was special. That's coaching. Deal w/it.

--We may have finally gotten the monkey off our back in regards to learning how to win. Now, we must keep working hard and come out w/the same type of effort in our next game, which is certainly winnable. Build on this and gain momentum.

--I really enjoyed the victory. It was extremely inspiring.

Saw that too. He ain't going to be playing with plays like that.

Yup.

DT's don't normally make plays 15 yards down field. But this one does.

Agree. Still nervous I was.

Coaching? Execution? Baker Mayfield? We are outcoached when Taylor is at quarterback and outcoach the opponent when Mayfield is in. Funny how that works.

I don't think the Oline just started blocking out of nowhere. I think it all has to do with Mayfield. 1, TT holds the ball longer. Takes an extra hitch, etc. TT is sluggish when he drops back, his feet are slow (which is weird because he is quick when he runs), and his mechanics are sluggish.

I absolutely don't believe the line just started playing better, I think it was the fact that TT was not in there.

Wow.. I gotta tell you guys, in the beginning of the game, I just wasn't impressed with the Offense at all.. Seemed like nothing we tried was working.. Pass drops, Poor passes, virtually no run game, Oline looked like it was just having a bad day.

One change took place,,, Only ONE CHANGE. Mayfield for Taylor.

Almost from that moment on, the O was different. Different attitude.. Every phase was improved with that ONE CHANGE..

And we won.

I hope that Hue Jackson sees that the Baker Mayfield era has come.

Nothing against Taylor, but he's just not the answer. A strong D will stop him every time.

Would we be 3-0 if Baker started? Who knows, but based on what I saw last night, coming in cold, not having worked with the 1's and to accomplish what he did, my guess is 3-0 was very possible.

It's only one game and yes, I'm crazy excited but I'm still trying to think only one game at a time. Raiders are next up.

Question

I had to work and didn't see the game but I caught the last 6 minutes of the game on the radio on my drive home. My question is, does anybody know how many sacks we had? ESPN's stats show only 2 but I'm pretty sure that when Darnold threw the ball away on the Jets last drive and it was later reversed to a sack as he was down by contact that Donovan said that gave us 5 for the game. thanks.

Normally I do too, but TT was so pathetic last night, it was deserved IMO.

TWo weeks in a row, i have nothing bad to say about Hue. The team was poised again (few penalties), and on the spot. Kuddos Hue, I still have some reservations, but you are starting to impress me.

Landy

Can i point out to everyone, how he not only is a BEAST WR, but how he effects the defense with his attitude and BLOCKING. He just nags at the CB. Blocks them, hits them, chips them, he is constantly putting pressure on them and irritating them. He should have drawn a flag on the one guy, but didn't when they pushed him over. This is one of his most underrated traits.

When your QB has doubt, the whole offense feels it. When your QB is confident, the whole offense feeds on it. Even the defense feels it.

Tyrod is/was too worried about making mistakes. The worrying is one extended mistake.

I think you're giving Hue a little too much credit, but I agree the firing talk should be put to bed. Hopefully now He can focus less on the who and more on just coaching the starters up. Things may have finally clicked and found our sweet spot.

I think that vacant look is Darnold's natural expression on the football field. Not that Williams didn't confuse him, but he looks like that all the time.

Simply "Leadership". Young kid that some thought arrogant, unready and undersized put 52 other men on his shoulders and took them to victory.
He won the hearts and minds of his teammates and a city in a tad over a half of football. Amazing kid. Hope he continues his rise. Hope he knows and appreciates that Cleveland is his oyster.

I wanted to come in here to point that out about Landry. He was pestering the one DB (he got the other unsportsmanlike). That guy was playing well early on in the game, but seemed to get real frustrated. I think Landry did that.

There is plenty of time later to talk about what I actually saw.

Right now I am just basking in the WIN.

It feels so damn good. Happy for all of us who have suffered with this team. Hard to believe what one win can do.

Congratulations to Hue Jackson. It had to be torture getting to this place. Enjoy it Hue.

Got to thank Baker Mayfield.

Without you this win would not have happened. What can you say? He stepped upon the stage with the bright lights shinning and he delivered.

You can never get enough of this feeling.

Happy Day Browns fans.

Schobert has improved, I agree. He still has those few awful plays per game, but I've been impressed with his nose for the ball

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

I saw an NFL team and a franchise QB.
I saw Baker get his shot and capitalize on it.
I saw Hue breathe a sigh of relief.
I saw one player change the entire stadium. His oline was better, his running backs got better, the d played better, and the jets started playing scared.
Apparently, Baker learned what he needed to learn, he was poised, calm, efficient. He had no fear, some of those passes were lasers. As someone said, he came out and said, "I am going to throw this strawberry thru a bus"

I also saw a kicker doe his job

Vers, I don't know if you remember, or not, but when we drafted Schobert (and Kindred) I loved the pick. There were a lot of people who actually said he was too slow to be a starter.

Hey! I got one right! grin lol

As far as what I saw .... I saw a team come together behind a real leader in Baker. I saw a team decide to impose their will in winning time. I saw a ton of other good things, but to me, these are the most important.

I do feel for Tyrod. I really respect how he helped mold the team in the off-season. Unfortunately, it just didn't work. He'll be a very, very well paid backup though.

I have never missed seeing Mayfield taking a snap from Oklahoma to Cleveland. And seen many more at Texas Tech and even a few from Lake Travis HS. This kid hasnt lost a dozen games in his entire career from High School to now.

This is the magic that we enjoyed here in Oklahoma these past few years.

Maturity, pocket awareness, vision, evasion, accuracy, strength...I could go on. Many young QBs have many of these talents but Baker has all of them. He makes the entire team better while being humble giving credit where its due (TT and his fellow teammates) and knowing that he is just one part of the machine.

Now all the parts of coming together and its a new Era in Cleveland.

The Machine comes to life!

Last night's #NYJvsCLE had 10.3 million viewers in the game's final 6 minutes, and was @nflnetwork's highest-rated and most-watched exclusive TNF game in more than three years.

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."

As I b*****d and complained about Dorsey selecting Mayfield instead of Darnold and Ward instead of Chubb, I see that I have no idea about evaluating talent.

John Dorsey does!!!!!!

He picked the right QB. He didn't just pick him, he had evaluated him for years!

I am enjoying eating my crow and was as WRONG as anyone could be about our first two 2018 draft selections!

Because of these Dorsey picks, we now FINALLY have a FUTURE and a DIRECTION!

This all was encapsulated Thursday night. Mayfield not only looked stud like, but as the game went on he ELEVATED the whole team!

The Defense got their second wind as Baker was throwing laser shots down the field! Putting together REAL professional QB NFL drives!

The Offense finally had a reason to block, because the QB wasn't behind them sabotaging the game-plan with slow reads and inaccuracy by the boat load.

This is the first time I have seen our beloved team look like a Professional Football Team in 20 years, give or take a few, because our outcomes were all eventually the same: Flirting with a win and then pissing it away in the last moments under the fire!

Mayfield's performance was even beyond Kosar like. He was a human QB machine throwing bb's to the WR's ON TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!!!

The D is amazing so far. Myles is the man leading a young and brilliant D. Shobert has been amazing at LB along with Ward balling as a rookie in the secondary. Ward is incredible. His speed and athleticism is not matched in the NFL and he is only in his third game!

Mark down 9-20-18 as THE MOMENT the Browns became contenders again!

We finally have a game changer at QB for the first time since Bernie!

There will be growing pains, but when you have selected your franchise QB any game is within reach!

And Jarvis Landry is an EPIC Wide Receiver!....WOW!

Let's run the table Brownies!

Finally:

"There's a gleam men.
There's a gleam.
Let's get the gleam!"

It's probably been said, but if so, I'll reiterate it: The team changed when Mayfield went in. It was extremely noticeable.

I was a happy camper last night.

I have to laugh when the Jets players and coaches said that they didn't notice any difference when Baker went in. rolleyes

They shouldn't be coaches if they didn't see it.

I think one of the half-time crew said it best: "I haven't seen a more exciting 3-point drive in my life!"

I missed that.

But, wow, the players, the fans - EVERYTHING changed. I know a little success will do that.......but dang.

I often have a group text thing going with some Browns fans friends during the game. Last night, during his first series, I said "This team is suddenly different. I like it."

Chubb is a liability as a blocker. That effort on the punt block was inexcusable.

Yes, he wift on that block, but seriously, do you think that this kid was ever asked to play on STs'?

probably not, but in the NFL, as a running back, if you cannot block, you cannot play.

you had a good run Hank.

I'll have more observations later but the one thing that really flew off the screen to me was how open our receivers were when Baker took the helm...It is amazing how getting the ball out on time and with some accuracy opens things up..It looked like we had receivers running free all over the place....

The best pass he threw was the one he put in Callaway's bread basket on the sideline that he dropped...

We will have rookie growing pains for sure and we will probably lose games that can be put on Baker's shoulders but I am now convinced he has the tools to be a franchise qb...I saw it as did all of you. And before some of the Baker naysayers retort with ' it was only a half ' or ' the jets imploded ' etc I would like to remind you that I did not see Kizer, Manziel, Weeden, Quinn or any QB since possibly Kosar do what Baker did last night at anytime...we always wondered what those former QB's were capable of and hoped they could develop into a franchise qb.

We don't know the trajectory of Baker's learning curve etc but I saw him play a half of football far and above anything we've seen in 10 years. That can't be argued. And he did it on a national stage, coming off the bench for his first NFL game.

I saw the Jets D play regularly with 8-9-10 guys within two yards of the LOS while TT was at QB...then...not so much after Baker went in. It was a dramatic shift in scheme.

They went from daring us to throw...to watching a real QB take control of the game.

A lot of good posts..

It's amazing how much better coaching looks when guys make plays.

I did not think the early rumblings of boos was inappropriate, we were terrible.

There was decent cheering when we made our first two FGs but the really loud cheer when we made our first XP really cracked me up. Never seen a kicker play a power fade before but if Tiger was watching, that first kick looked a lot like his stinger 2-iron... low with a bit of left to right. Glad he made his kicks, not sure how much was nerves for them not "looking good".. but I'm not convinced we are out of the woods yet with our kicking woes.

After last week some of us had a discussion about learning to win and making the plays to win games. We made the final play last night. My serial pessimism with the Browns led me to believe, that at the very least, the Jets would get across mid-field and have a chance at a hail mary.. a good rush and nice INT prevented that.

Glad that we keep sticking with the run even when it's not working early.. not sure whether it was just wearing them down or if Mayfields vertical threat was the reason the run started working later, but I'll take it.

Wish people would stop focusing on the drops, yea we had a couple drops.. we also had a few really nice catches of balls that could have been missed. Every QB has some drops, those things work themselves out statistically.
