What is it with this team and Phil Dawson? The guy has been pitiful for two plus years. I'm sick of people talking about his high percentage, most of that was achieved in his early years, and tha fact that the Browns constantly kicked field goals in the redzone due to not being able to punch it in.
I wish too god that they would pick up a new kicker if just to challenge Dawson. He claims he was in a slump last year, but it's been a couple years since he has been consistent.
I know a bunch of people will come on here and try to defend him as usual, but his miss last night is just picking up where he left off last year. Some have tried to blame different holders and othewr things, when the reality is he is getting older and his leg is weak.
There has got to be a FA kicker somewhere that can make kicks inside the 40. Phil has done good in the past and I give him credit for that, but he has become very inconsistant, and with a young team like we have now, we need consistency from the kicking game.

Do you mean in 2005 when he was 27/29 he wasn't consistant?
Don't get me wrong though, I am worried about the kicker position, and I am all for bringing in another legitimate kicker to compete with Phil. There is no excuse for all the misses last year and the miss last night. I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like Phil's picking up where he left off last year w/ all the easy misses.
Go Browns!

His best percentage year was in 2005.

Not true as his highest percentage year was 2005... I think he had a down year last year, but if he has another low 70% I'm ok with finding someone new

He did have a 51 yard FG last year FYI which almost ties his career long of 52 yards. He's never had an overly strong leg. He's known more for his accuracy.

Most FA kickers are FAs for a reason.
I'm ok with bringing someone in to challenge... I think every spot should be like that. But there are no FA kickers out there better than Dawson IMO. Personally I wouldn't mind drafting one late next year if Phil has another down year.

Last year was one of his worst years... but he has been solid for us. I'd like to see if he can turn it around before throwing him under the bus.

I think one of Phil's kids may have been ill last season. That may have had an effect on his kicking.

Statistically, last year was his worst year. He's missed one FG this year in preseason and you want him gone..
OK,, you want him gone,, propose who we could get instead,.,name one... Be my guest..

waste of PS player.... just resign him later in the season... no one will pick up a kicker and put them on their PS... those 8 spots are too valueable

He is right. I think Dawson will come back strong this year however. Give him a little more slack before you decide to give him the ax..

One team cannot sign a player away from another team's practice squad and simply assign him to their own by replacing another PS player with him.
If a team signs away another team's PS player, that player must be added to their active roster .

Isn't Mike Vanderjagt still a FA?
I was hoping we would have gone after Mason Crosby with one of out late round picks but GB snagged him up.
I've been down on Dawson for a few years so I have no problme with bringing in someone to compete.

amen to that... I think everyone needs to put the torches and pitchforks away turn aground and go back home...Dawson is going to be fine this year... kickers legs don't go bad after 8 years in the league. He's got at least another 8 left in him. I don't know why everyone is saying his leg is going on him. He never had an overly strong leg. He has always been an accuracy kicker. Last year he kicked it 51 yards. How far do you want a kicker to kick the ball?
He had some accuracy issues and he said he made adjustments this offseason. He will be fine by season time. Personally, I'm glad he got his miss out of the way in the preseason. IMHO You are going to be in for a real shock if we bring in another kicker. Cleveland is one of the hardest stadiums to kick in. We have a top 10 kicker in Dawson and bringing in some scrub to replace him will only make you pull your hair out later in the season when they go 18-27.
In the offseason here were some of the Top FA kickers available. One of them i believe we already had on the team in Jeff Chandler. Not exactally what I would call a great list to choose from. In fact there really isn't anyone on there that I think could come close to Dawson. The two that kinda come close to him are either past thier prime as a kicker or mentally unstable...
Kicker John Carney/UFA John Hall/UFA Paul Edinger/UFA Morten Andersen/UFA Todd Peterson/UFA Mike Vanderjagt/UFA John Hall/UFA Jose Cortez/UFA Ola Kimrin/UFA Seth Marler/UFA Jeff Chandler/UFA

Thank you for getting the point I was trying to make.. Right now, out there in FA Land, I can't think of a single guy I'd rather have than Phil Dawson.
Keep in mind that what I'm really saying is, if there were an obviouis upgrade out there, then I'm all for it. But I just don't see anyone available.
As for him returning to be his old reliable self, that would be just great..

Dawson is not going anywhere unless he suddenly blows up.
It was disappointing to see Dawson miss the 36 yard attempt in the 3rd qtr. I don't know what happened on that kick...hold looked good...looked like he either miss judged the wind or simply hooked the kick.
But, looking at Dawson's performance over his 8 year career, his FG% is 82.1 and extra points 97%.
Just comparing Dawson's career stats to those of another good kicker, Adam Vinatieri, averaged 82.5% on FG and 98% on extra points.
Again, we are all disappointed by the missed field goal in the Detroit game, but you don't get down on a guy like Dawson unless his accuracy suddenly goes to pot.

I believe the team has brought in a kicker every camp to share kicks and press Phil. He has been able to fend them off every year. Just had a stinker of a year. I would have no problem, if he continues to stink it up, if they bring in a veteran kicker to try out during the season.
I am not really worried because Phil has always been pretty reliable. Hopefully last year will be behind him and he will rebound this year.
Signing Steinbach - $49.5 million Signing Lewis - $5 million Drafting Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn - millions more Restoring the Browns to champions - priceless.

Phil has been very reliable. The one thing I think I like most about Phil is his ability to kick the onsides ball. He gets fantastic air under it, and perfect distance, not too shoirt, and not OB.
Ainsworth I think would be worth keeping around for a year, because he is a rookie and he seems to have a good boot. He could use better touch on the onside kick since the one he kicked on Saturday had none.
I'd like to see him hang around for a year and maybe press Phil ALOT next year, and maybe eclipse him.

I think Phil should be given this season to try and rebound. He's been to solid to just throw under the bus. However, if he has another stinky year then we should look for his replacement.
Vanderjagt could be a great kicker but he's a nutjob, I think he purposely missed that FG for Indy, he had issues with Manning and Dungy. At the very least, he sure didn't give 100% effort on that kick. Also, there is a reason Dallas let him go, I really don't think Parcells would have booted a kicker with the potential and leg that he has for no reason.
Ainsworth ain't been impressive too me. I would like to see a legit prospect at K come in and challenge Phil next season.
I thought John Carney was decent?

There has got to be a FA kicker somewhere that can make kicks inside the 40. Phil has done good in the past and I give him credit for that, but he has become very inconsistant, and with a young team like we have now, we need consistency from the kicking game.
Phil Dawson needs to face the big fat boot! His age really shows out there on the field...

He's not that old, he was a rookie in '99. Only his 8th year. Kickers can last longer.

Age isn't a factor with a kicker, look at Morten Anderson, Jon Carney, Jason Elam....

He's 32 going on 33...and well he's not that good of a kicker...I think we all can agree to that. And I said HIS age...those other kickers obviously have skill and can be 60 and still kicking good...haha.

He has to do backflips Juggle poles that are on fire and he should have had a TD on his run against the Raiders, he obviously didnt because he doesnt have the leg to do it and he is an old fart. He hasnt been the most consistent offensive threat we have had since our return. He is just a dirty old man that cant kick. All other NFL kickers are in another league compared to Phil. He should be working at Burger King. Jesus, its like Browns fans see one negative thing about a player and he has a thread about him needing to be cut. Especially a player that has done nothing but keep us on the score board since our return. A week ago he was back in the saddle after having a good game. This week he should be cut....

Daman, when other player's talent wanes they are replaced, why not Dawson? He was bad all of last year, and yes his miss the other night lends me to believe he needs replaced. Your comments about me wanting to cut him is not what I was saying. You first have to have a replacement, and the last time I looked it wasn't my job to find one. My opinion was I think he's done, your reply is what I meant about the love affair with some of the players this team has kept a little too long IMO. Dawson reminds me of McCutcheon. Good player that's time has passed, but a fan favorite who will always be excused for poor performance by using PAST achievements.

You mean like last year? Call it a fluke, blame it on personal problems, or anything you want, but the fact is that last year he was NOT a consistent kicker.
What I find funny, is the list of kickers above were all good at one time, but now they are not. But almighty Phil could not possibly be added to that list

Punters kick 60 yarders in warm up too. Big deal. I've watched Dawson miss short and long kicks. easy ones and long ones. All this does not mean he can still do it.

Stats from two years ago don't mean squat. What about last years stats, if they are so golden?
You've witnessed endzone kicks, and I've witnessed botched chip shots, so what point are you trying to make, besides that you think you know it all?
Why you calling Shep? Because I started a good debate that you don't like? I thought this was what this board was for. Or is it just for thing YOU feel are debateable?
I stated my opinion about Dawson no being very good anymore. You bring up his past, while I'm using the present and a less distant past.
If you feel it is not a good post ignore it, instead of trying to be somekind of board police. I have respect for Shep, and if he feels this thread is not worthy, I'm sure he doesn't need a wanna be like you reminding him. Buzz Off!
