Imagine that ... they institute a rule that is almost impossible to call in real time and the refs are erring on the side that won’t get them fired and there having an issue with it ... YA’ALL MADE THE RULE despite the Refs warning of u this ...

NFL Network's Judy Battista reports several members of the Competition Committee are "uncomfortable with the roughing the passer calls" early in the season.

Battista references the Clay Mathews call from the Vikings game as a specific example, but there have been several instances of questionable at best roughing calls already this season. The rule is also under the microscope after Dolphins DE William Hayes suffered a torn ACL attempting to avoid a roughing call in Week 3. The Committee has a call scheduled for next week, but Battista reports it is unclear if anything will change this season.

With a small and young QB we should be behind this rule. TBH

No one wants to watch Tyrod Taylor Vs. Josh McCown on Monday night football because we let DE's tee off on the QB's and they are hurt. How much were we complaining about Colt McCoy being decapitated by James Harrison? This rule is long over due, these guys are too gassed up and unloading on the NFL's prize possessions....QB's......and I am BEYOND sick of watching TB12 get the kid gloves treatment while our QB's get annihilated.

It hurts our experience, it hurts our record and ultimately it hurts the NFLs....MONEY to have QB's on IR, this rule is not going away. They may amend it but these guys have to learn a different way.

If the new rouging rules are going to stay, then bring back an expanded "in the grass" rule too. If a DE gets to the QB and can't take him down high or low AND can't land on him, there should be something there to help with the sack. It's only fair.

I respect your perspective but I couldn't disagree more. None of the roughing the passer calls that have been scrutinized ( the two by Matthews, even Garrett's in game one ) could be even loosely described as ' teeing off '. They were pretty much perfect form tackles. Whatelse can the defender do ? Honestly ?

Harrison'e hit on McCoy was definitely ' Teeing Off ' and is an example of what the league should be trying to prevent and penalizing.

I disagree, I am sick of defensive players being neutered.

we have one of the best Def in the NFL and we cannot let them lose. We have a potential HOF pass rusher, and hes going to be getting flags left and right for doing his job.

The complaint is that the best Qbs are being sidelined for hits and not on the field.

Well, my complaint would be, what does that matter when the game is a shell of itself anyway? With the way the rules are going, the QB itself will become less important too. When guys are not afraid of getting hit, they will stand in there - and we are seeing guys like Fitzpatrick etc, having crazy numbers because drives are being sustained, and they are not afraid of getting sacked. For me, it's not so much the rule(s) that are being implemented, but the reason why.

Many of these roughing the passer rules are being put into effect because one guy got hurt one time.

Brady shreds his knee... new roughing the passer rule
Rodgers breaks his collarbone... new roughing the passer penalty

Making a rule that applies to everyone because one thing happened to one guy one time is ridiculous.

2 hand tag on the QB.

Seems fair.

I guess people forgot that QBs are football players first, quarterbacks second.

I get why they're doing it, it's smart from a ratings and marketing perspective, I just don't like it how it limits the defense.

Using the match-up for this coming Thursday, nobody wants to see Trevor Siemian vs. Sean Mannion duel it out. They tune in because they want to see Kirk Cousins vs. Jared Goff. Heck, there is a reason why the 2nd half ratings of our Thursday night game shot through the roof and had the most eyes watching a Thursday night game in 3-4 years, Baker Mayfield was in the game. Had TT performed that comeback, nobody would have cared.

Just like MLB's "chicks dig the longball" marketing tagline in the late 90's, QB's drive ratings in the NFL. They need to be healthy to be on the field so people tune in. To some degree, they also want other star non-QB players doing their thing every game too, but make no mistake, they care about the QBs first and foremost.

So yeah, it seems excessive to enact rules for a few freak tackles. I never thought the Rodgers tackle from last year looked all that bad, when he broke his collarbone. The Clay Matthews hit on Smith from last week looked way worse. However, QBs drive the league, which drives ratings, which drive betting, which drives fantasy football, which drives merchandise sales, which drives ticket revenue and it all drives the next TV contract.

Heck, maybe this has something to do with how QBs are getting more guaranteed money. The owners might be flipping simply because they are locked into paying some guys $75-100M.

He got wrecked week 1 against the Bengals, the refs threw the flag AND the defensive player was tossed.

Anyway, Cam and Ben tend to take more punishment because they're so huge. The big difference to me, Cam runs a lot around the goaline and he also initiates contact too. He'll see a LB or DB lining him up, change his angle and attempt to blow them up because he's a lot bigger than most of them. And when he does drive them backwards, he stands over them, dabs and dances. I'm not saying it's fair when defensive players hits Cam high or late, but he tends to play the big bad bully role when he's the hitter. I think some of that rubs off on the refs eyes, sort of like when Shaq would get mugged on most plays too. Shaq would bruised them up, so the refs let it go the other way too. Just a theory...

Remember, Cam (6'5" 245) is the same size as Jamie Collins (6'3" 250).

I just worry that this rule will put bigger qbs like big ben at a huge advantage....a guy like that....you almost have to drive him to the turf to get him down....

Exactly. I've seen Ben being taken to the ground and let a pass fly for a completion. If you don't him, he's going to make a play. Then I saw Ben last night do the "flop" after someone accidently brushed his helmet with their hand. In the replay his head never even moved, it was like a pat. But he fell to the ground and acted like he was hurt. Got him a first down and out of the shadow of his endzone.

Hits that are made after the ball is released, should be flagged if it can been seen as unnecessary, but if the guy has the ball, as long as you don't take out his knees or go for his head should not.

On sort of the same topic, in the Steelers game last night a steeler defender cause a fumble. The announcers said he put his helmet on the ball. Clearly in the replay, his helmet went straight into the recievers facemask, and then as the guys head went back, his helmet hit the ball, no call and praised as a good play. It was a Steeler player so I figured it would be overlooked.

But unlike the hit Peppers was flagged on last year, the helmet made contact with the facemask first then the ball. In the Peppers call, he hit shoulder first, and the guys head came down and made contact with his helmet.

IMO, this is what they should use replay for, same as for the QB hits. Run the replay and see if the guy was intentional in his hit.

No one outside the Qbs themselves should be happy about how the refs are calling it. It's been nothing short of ridiculous.

Two hand tap on the Qbs need to be implemented then from what I've seen. Last night's game was ridiculous. Clay Matthew's flags are all ridiculous. It's unfair and I agree with Clay, it's soft.

How about "No blood, no foul" like the NBA which is at least as brutal as these pro players are.

Over-protective. I don't want them to be pints, but they are football players. This rule is lousy idea. Hate to be a ref. This is the pass is a catch rule for tackles.

Not sure why you would call out the commish....the owners make the rules. The league simply ties to enforce the rules the owners want.

The NFL is all about making money. I think we all know that, right?

Last year, Aaron Rodgers was lost for the season when Barr from Minni landed on him w/his full weight.

The NFL does not want their QBs to miss extended time because that would hurt their bottom line.

Rules are passed in order for the NFL to make as much money as possible.

But what good does it do them when nobody watches this childish soap opera garbage anymore anyway? It's to the point it only remotely resembles football anymore.

To a degree.

No doubt there is a effort to protect QB's. There aren't all that many you can really call star players.

I think it is more about insurance. The NFL makes a lot of money. It's about liability.

Now you have players complaining about playing a sport they know is dangerous.

It is what it is.

Look at rugby. That is a tough guys sport. No wuss plays that. They don't sustain one concussion after another.

Why? players don't wear helmets. Helmets embolden people.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I didn’t call out the commish at all ... i copied and pasted it ... i didn’t write it ... *L* ...

U can speculate all u want ...

Here’s the FACTS ....

- the helmet to helmet rules are to COVER THEIR ASSES for liability reasons ... insurance falls under there ...

- the protecting the QB’s is 100% what Vers said ... its all about ASSET PROTECTION ...

Its right there in the RULE ... all these rules are not for for QB’s when they take off running .. there treats dlike any other player then until they slide ...

If it was about insurance and liability why can’t rb’s and wr’s slide? ...

Naaa ... the QB rules are all about ASSET PROTECTION ...

Is it just me, or does it seem like they are trying to offset these new rules about how you hit the QB with letting WRs and DBs play a much more physical game down the field?

I’m not exactly sure what u mean by that ...

Every year theres “points of emphasis” witch are things they want the officials to focus on ... there basically “minor rule changes” w/o changing the written rule ....

There’s been no new rule written that I’m aware of ...

Not sure if allowing DB’s to play more physical was one of the “points of emphasis” this year ...

Only two I’ve noticed so far this year is there not calling near as many pick plays on the O ... and they’ve been told SAFETY at all costs with the QB ...

I’m thinking this week or next theres gonna be conference calls with the officials and then a rep from the league will show up at each officials meeting the day before the game to explain just how they want it called now .... especially after this public comment by some on the comp committee ...

We’ll never hear of it ... it’ll be noticeable though ... those calls on Clay Matthews are HORRIBLE but there not even close to the only ones ...

Hope somewhere in there I covered what u were looking for .... if not, please clarify your question for me ...

Here is a suggestion...it will get offensive coaches on the side of defensive players IMO...if we are so concerned about the health and well being of a QB that we have to have flags for roughing the passer....then a rule should be instituted that when a GB is roughed up and draws a flag then that QB must sit out and be evaluated for the completion of that possession. To prevent Defenses from roughing QB to get them out of the game each Defense will be allowed 2 roughing calls per game (with 15 yard penalty assessed)...anything after the third and the offending defensive player is ejected...this a cumulative team number..not per player....no offensive coaches are not gonna want their player out obviously so they will be lobbying to calm the eff down on the ticky tack calls.

If they want to keep this rule and keep defenders from hitting Qbs hard or landing on them, then they need to make a rule that says, "Once a QB leaves the pocket, they can NO longer throw a forward pass".

We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I disagree, I am sick of defensive players being neutered.

we have one of the best Def in the NFL and we cannot let them lose. We have a potential HOF pass rusher, and hes going to be getting flags left and right for doing his job.

We've been devoid of a QB for 3 decades, so Im good with protecting him.
There is a difference between trying to protect a QB, and changing the game entirely.

Do you actually think Fitzpatrick is having some magical season throwing for 400+ yards a game, because he is all of a sudden good qb? No, hes getting extra drive after extra drive.

I don't wanna see 50-48 NFL games. I don't want to see 400+ yards passing every game. I don't want to see 15 flags a game. I don't think the majority of people do either.
