It can't be that good! Trump himself said just the other day that without him it would all reverse... apparently the economy won't survive Trump and he knows it.

Apple CEO Tim Cook explains why Apple products were exempt from Trump's China tariffs

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook commented on President Trump's decision to exempt Apple products from the new China tariffs.
  • Cook has been vocal about the ongoing trade disagreement, even speaking directly with Trump about the tariffs.
  • He has maintained that the company's flagship handset, the iPhone, isn't likely to see tariffs.

Sara Salinas | @saracsalinas

Apple CEO Tim Cook explained why his company's products dodged the new round of China tariffs, saying "it's not really great for the United States" to tariff Apple products in an interview on "Good Morning America" Tuesday.

President Donald Trump's latest list of proposed tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods spared some Apple products at the last minute. Apple had earlier said the proposed tariffs would affect the Apple Watch, AirPods and a host of other products.

"I don't want to speak for [the Trump administration], but I think they looked at this and said that it's not really great for the United States to put a tariff on those type of products," Cook told "Good Morning America."

Cook has been vocal about the ongoing trade disagreement, even speaking directly with Trump about the tariffs. He has maintained that the company's flagship handset, the iPhone, isn't likely to see tariffs.

"The iPhone is assembled in China, but the parts come from everywhere, including the United States. You know the glass comes from Kentucky; there are chips that come from the U.S. and of course the research and development is all done in the United States," Cook said.

Cook also said he thinks the ongoing trade disagreement will eventually work itself out.

"I'm optimistic because trade is one of those things where it's not a zero sum game. You know you and I can trade something and we can both win. And so I'm optimistic that the two countries will sort this out and life will go on," Cook said.

It must be nice to get a pass on tariff pain.

China may reject new trade talks if more tariffs imposed: WSJ

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Chinese government may decline to participate in proposed trade talks with the United States later this month if the Trump administration moves forward with additional tariffs on imported Chinese goods, the Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing Chinese officials.

The U.S. had proposed the talks, but at the same time moved forward with planning additional tariffs on some $200 billion of Chinese products, the Journal reported.

The report quoted one senior Chinese official saying the country would not negotiate “with a gun pointed to its head.”

Other officials who advise the country’s leaders are suggesting China impose limits on the sale of parts and supplies needed by U.S. businesses, using “export restraints” to threaten their supply chains.

Fresh trade talks had been proposed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to begin around Sept. 20.

Though China had begun discussing plans to attend, but began rethinking whether to attend because of the possibility new tariffs may be announced this week.

China strikes back with tariffs on $60 billion of US goods

When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!

Details of the deal

The US started negotiations with South Korea last year, following Mr Trump's criticism of the 2012 deal as a "one-way street".

Under the new terms, South Korea has agreed to exempt up to 50,000 cars per US manufacturer per year from South Korean safety requirements - double the current number and far higher than any American company currently exports.

The country has also agreed to changes such as improvements to its customs procedures and amendments to its drug pricing policies.

The agreement also extends a 25% US tariff against South Korean trucks to 2041. It had been scheduled to expire in 2021.

Separately, the US agreed to exempt a certain amount of South Korean steel from the 25% tariffs Mr Trump announced in March - equivalent to 70% of the country's average imports from 2015-2017.

South Korea and the US are major trade partners, exchanging nearly $155bn in goods and services in 2017.

Maybe he should work on our drug pricing policies since we pay more for them than anyone else in the world. lmao

Remember when 40 tried to claim prescription drug prices were falling, and when pressed, his evidence was one of Trump's senile rambles at a rally where he said something like "we're gonna get those prices down folks. Believe me."?

Yes, it is quite maddening that people have been talking about the economy going down, recession issues, down turns ever since Trump got elected. Every single time, and I mean every single time they're wrong and at the end of the day these people look stupid. Now they don't want to admit that they were wrong because that would make them look bad.

OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! TRUMP GOT ELECTED! HOLY CRAP! THE STOCK MARKET IS GOING TO CRASH AND THERE WILL BE A DEPRESSION! OH MY GOD!

The above is what some people said back in 2016. Well, its past mid 2018 and we're doing excellent economically overall. People who refuse to believe this or nit pick of certain points just have sour grapes and a vendetta against the president. Its very strange though. Don't they want the US to succeed? Instead of celebrating the United States' successes, you all mire in them.

Well the farmers aren't doing so well now with Trump's trade wars. So maybe you should worry about the corn.

It could, but China has more to lose than us because they export more to us then we export to them.

President Trump may be a dingle berry, but he understands business.

We will win this. China loses way more than we do on this one. They will come back to the table with open ears and arms.

I see why you and others think this way but consider this, what if tomorrow all of those cheap Chinese products just stopped flowing into the country?

Sure it would hurt China while they looked for new buyers, but the US consumer is addicted to Chinese products. We have no manufacturing alternatives to many goods. We don't make these things ourselves, so finding another country or countries to provide similar goods would only redouble our economic issues with those supplying countries. Do you think the Chinese don't know all of this?

PLUS they hold our debt and could just call it in. Sell off those treasuries en masse! That would be a terrible blow to the entire world.

What is winning in this case? What little the president offers on substance here points to his view that we should be trade deficit neutral with China. Not only is that not doable, it's not even a good thing from an economic standpoint. I have a trade deficit with my grocery store because I always give them money for groceries. Yet I'm not losing because in exchange I can eat.

Right now what we have is a tax on consumers that hurts businesses indirectly by lowering consumer discretionary spending. I could be at least willing to listen to a long game on short term pain. But the long game here doesn't exist. Not one that benefits us at least. That's a problem.

And that solves the problem how? smh

If the dollar is ever dropped as the world's biggest reserve currency we're in serious trouble here.
