ATLANTA -- A quarterback depth chart already perilously thin because of the ongoing absence of Michael Vick became even more threadbare Sunday, as the Atlanta Falcons lost second-year veteran D.J. Shockley for the season to a left knee injury.
web page

Shockley

Shockley tore the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee and also suffered damage to the medial collateral ligament in Friday night's preseason victory over the Buffalo Bills, two league sources confirmed. The injury was also reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which cited sources with knowledge of the injury.

Team officials on Friday night termed the injury a sprain. Shockley underwent an MRI exam on Saturday and the club's medical staff huddled on Sunday to evaluate the procedure. The Falcons announced on Sunday afternoon that they would not have an update on Shockley's condition until coach Bobby Petrino addressed it following the Monday practice session.

A local favorite because he played at North Clayton High School in suburban College Park, Ga,, and then at the University of Georgia, where he starred as a senior in 2005, Shockley was battling Chris Redman for the No. 2 job behind starter Joey Harrington.

Shockley, 24, was a seventh-round choice in the 2006 draft, but didn't play a snap as a rookie, and he was designated as the team's No. 3 or "emergency" quarterback for all 16 regular-season games. In two preseason games this year, he completed nine of 17 passes for 123 yards, with no touchdown passes and one interception. Shockley also ran four times for 19 yards.

He was injured in the fourth quarter on a scramble on which he gained 10 yards. Shockley escaped the pocket on a third-and-5 play that originated from the Buffalo 24-yard line, ran to his left and turned upfield. But as he went to cut, his foot appeared to stick in the surface at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The young quarterback went to the ground in obvious pain and was carted from the field.

Shockley unofficially logged 30 snaps in the two preseason games. Although the coaching staff had yet to determine who would serve as the primary backup to Harrington, Redman appeared to have an edge in the competition. He has played 59 snaps, in part because he was forced to re-enter the game on Friday following Shockley's injury.

The only other quarterback on the roster is Casey Bramlet, who was signed last week after the Washington Redskins released him. Bramlet, 26, starred in the final season of the NFL Europa league this spring and led his team to the championship, but the former Wyoming standout has yet to play in a regular-season NFL game.

Redman, who played for Petrino at Louisville, when the Falcons coach was the offensive coordinator there in 1998, has not taken a snap in a regular-season game since 2003. A former Baltimore Ravens third-round draft choice, his resume includes six starts, but he has spent much of the past three seasons recovering from shoulder problems. One advantage he does have is his familiarity with Petrino's offensive design.

The loss of Shockley could force Atlanta to try to acquire another veteran quarterback, which was a possibility even before the injury. The Journal-Constitution reported that the Falcons had earlier inquired about the availability of Philadelphia backup Kelly Holcomb, who is a long shot to make the Eagles' roster because of a crowded depth chart.

I think we have a great opportunity to try to trade Anderson here, instead of just cutting him.

Man, I bet they are regretting the hell outta trading Shaub now.

This is also going to either force them to suspend or cut Vick...they need that roster space.

Rumor was that the Falcons were giving a lot of looks to Kelly Holcomb too...

Wow, that's really too bad. You hate to see stuff like this happen to a non-Steeler (just kidding Steeler fans, I never want people to get hurt, except Corey Fuller).

While they're probably regretting getting rid of Schaub, it was a good move for them at the time. They couldn't expect their franchise QB to be brought up on federal charges.

I've thought for a while that we may shop Frye (not Anderson) to them, since Frye is a little more of a scrambler. He's no Vick, but he might fit into that type of system more than an Anderson.

Yes...but know they only other QB's on roster are Chris Redman and Casey Bramlet.

Maybe Petrino can lure Dave Ragone out of retirement

I think the chances of getting a pick for either Anderson or Frye are pretty slim.

A sack of footballs and a free Grand Slam breakfast at Denny's is more realistic.

Just clicking....I posted the following on the Browns board...

Reading the NFL news this morning, it seems the Atlanta Falcons are shopping for a QB.

The Falcons lost D. J. Shockley for the season on Friday due to ACL. I read that Falcons had contacted Eagles about Holcomb who is listed as Eagles #3. No words on any deal though.

Even if the Falcons would make a deal with the Eagles for Holcomb...the Eagles would be looking for a #3 to replace the opening on their roster.

Why do I mention this?...THE BROWNS HAVE TOO MANY QBS.

We have four QBs and we don't know the NFL potential of any of them. Quinn is the only "safe" QB on the roster...the rest could be on the block should a situation present it's self.

Just something to watch and I'm not saying which QB should go or stay...just that we can't give our 4 QBs enough snaps to help them develop...IMO...WOOF...mac

Sorry to hear that about shockly... Too bad. This could have been his shot.

As for the effect it may have on the Browns,, I'm with Peen,, they won't give us anything for anyone except Quinn and he ain't going nowhere.

But if I had to rank them, leaving quinn out of course, I'd say the best chance we have of getting anything is if we trade them Frye.. Problem with that is, we would be stuck with Anderson and I don't like that at all..

A free Grand Slam at Denny's .... Mmmmmm

Harrington is still the number 1, Shockey was in a competition for number 2. Something Holcomb should enjoy going for.....

Whew...Ouch!!!

It will be interesting to see if Harrington gels in Atlanta. I don't know if that system will work with him though. He's been getting a lot of residual criticism here in Detroit for his comments about the fans harrassing his mom at games. They basically think he's just a whiner and a crappy QB. I think it was kind of a mini-Couch situation for him here with the team and the fans.

His point is that the Eagles have 4 QB's, including one high 2nd round pick who's supposed to be the heir apparent to McNabb, and the other being the "definite #2" according to Andy Reid.

So Holcomb is the odd man out, and quite frankly I wouldn't mind cutting both Frye and Anderson to bring back Holcomb.

I would. Holcomb is like QBs Anderson and Tommy Maddox. They are serviceable as backups. They can come in for a game or 2. But when other teams get game film on them, they can easily shut them down.

I see Atlanta getting a top pick next year and getting Loisvilles QB.

Vick agrees to plead guilty in dogfighting case

RICHMOND, Va. -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick accepted a plea deal Monday to avoid additional federal charges in a dogfighting case and now faces a likely lengthy prison sentence.

"After consulting with his family over the weekend, Michael Vick has asked that I announce today that he has reached an agreement with federal prosecutors regarding charges pending against him," Billy Martin, one of Vick's attorneys, said in a statement.

"Mr. Vick has agreed to enter a plea of guilty to those charges and to accept full responsibility for his actions and the mistakes he has made. Michael wishes to apologize again to everyone who has been hurt by this matter.

The terms of Vick's prison term are not yet known.

All three of Vick's co-defendants have reached plea deals in the case. Vick had been facing a Nov. 26 trial date.

Vick's last two co-defendants pleaded guilty Friday and said he bankrolled gambling on dogfights at the quarterback's property in rural Surry County, not far from his hometown of Newport News. One said Vick helped drown or hang dogs that didn't do well.

Quanis Phillips of Atlanta and Purnell Peace of Virginia Beach entered plea agreements and agreed to testify against Vick. Tony Taylor of Hampton struck a similar deal last month.

The gambling allegations alone could trigger a lifetime ban under the NFL's personal conduct policy.

The NFL has barred Vick from the Falcons' training camp but has withheld further action while the league conducts its own investigation.

Peace, Phillips and Taylor pleaded guilty to the same charges facing Vick: conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

The offense is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

Their sentencings are set for November and December.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

I think it would only be due dilligence from us to send out some feelers to Atlanta to see what theyd be willing to give up for a backup like Anderson.

With the way things are going it looks like we're going to release him, and if we do that we'll get nothing. It would only make sense to try to get something for him. We should definitely be trying to make a trade.

It'd be worth it to try to get a 6th or 7th rounder for him.

I find it very hard to believe anyone would give us a 6th rounder for Anderson even if they are desperate for a QB. Anderson was drafted in the 6th round years ago by Baltimore. He has done nothing since then. Falcons will go for Holcomb. Eagles will have their three QBs after that. I cannot think of anyone who you trade for Anderson.

Holcomb will be getting a call from Atlanta within a few days, bet on it. They'll probably start looking at QB's for next spring unless they think Joey is the answer under center.

I thought about that. but if we can move Lee Suggs for Derrick Strait and moved that other guy whose name I cant even remember for Therrien Fontenot.

I think it'd be plausible to move Derek Anderson, who got us a win vs KC, could net us a late late pick or maybe some other scrub who could add depth for us.

I can see them trying for Holcomb, but if they dont, Anderson could be suitable. He's still young, and is going to want to prove himself, and if he cant do it here, maybe elsewhere would help him.

Its possible we could net a weak player, maybe a weak backup RB that ATL isnt planning on keeping that could benefit us.

They May End Up In The Top 5 In The Draft Next Year, They May Need All The Picks They Have to Acquire One Next Year

Right now Brunell is # 3 on their depth chart behind Campbell and Todd Collins....so they might.

As for next years QB...I think they will be towards the top end of the draft...and more than likely will be willing to move if needed.....They just lost the face of their franchise...and will probably do whatever it takes to "put a new face" on as fast as possible.

They are going to need to do something to make people say....Vick who?

C'mon, Ammo, you've been on Frye's ass since he stiffed you for an autograph. It's got nothing to do with ability, age or anything else. DA's pretty close to being a stiff but Charlie is anything but. And you know it.

Actually, I'm not so sure.

And for the record, if you read any of my posts last year, I thought he could go in there and do a decent job. It wasn't until midway through last year, after I think the Denver game where I really began to sour on him.
