That was the "excuses" part of my response.

I think it's rather obvious that if these "witnesses", and according to what's been reported.there were at least "four other witness" BEFORE these guys agreed to testify, were such "unsavory characters",Vicks attorneys could have proved them not to be credible in court in front of a jury.

But they only mention "the two". Not the "six".

Vick plead guilty because the evidence was so overwhelming he couldn't have beaten it. Because he can well afford the legal defense to do so if he had a "dogs chance in hell".

To try to make excuses to the contrary, only further diminishes the NAACP's credability on this issue IMO.

DC,
Its not even that blacks think that he is innocent, its more that some feel as though that he will get more years for the Dog fighting aspect than if he would have killed someone! I usually ask people who think like that, a couple of questions:
First - when did illegal gambling not land people in prison??
Second - When you participate in illegal gambling and go across state lines, what law enforcement branch handles that??
Third - His very good BLACK lawyers told him to take the plea deal, if they had a ounce/shred of evidence to the contrary, don't you think they would still be fighting??
Fourth - When one side has 7 witnesses and the other side as one, who do you think will win that case??

Once you put those things out there, the wheels in their minds start spinning!

This is my favorite and the one I have used.. Vick is not some schmoe relying on the advice of public defenders... he has the means to fight this as long as necessary if he is even remotely innocent of any of these charges... Had he plead out for probation or even 6 months, yea I might think he had other motives... but pleading out with the possibility of a couple years? He has to understand that means at least 3 years away from the NFL then whatever the NFL does since he admitted to being guilty... He has to understand his NFL career could be over.... Given those circumstances, if there was ever a case where a plea is assinine, this is it. Pleading guilty only had one upside to it for Vick and that was avoiding the potential second indictment which you have to think, he knew would be much more serious and his jail time was going to start to be measured in decades...

Well Halfback and other non readers on this topic,
I was wondering when you all would get to your usual NAACP bashing!! But of course, you all failed to read a key component of that article, the part about it being the "R.L. White, president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter"!!... I guess you all failed to read that part, you know, about it being one chapter that is backing Vick, not the entire organization!!!! Nope, the bashers/non-readers of course missed that part of it entire article.
As a matter of fact lets look at what the national chapter stated:

NAACP: Vick must be held responsible
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/7145048

hopefully the large print will help some of you all read!

Here's the whole article..... The article does say that the National NAACP does not have a stance on the case, and refuses to speculate as to if Vick was being treated differently because he was black....

NAACP: Vick must be held responsible

WASHINGTON (AP) - Falcons quarterback Michael Vick "is not a victim" and should be held responsible for his actions involving a dogfighting ring in Virginia, the national president of the NAACP said Thursday.

"He absolutely must account for what he has done," Dennis Courtland Hayes, interim president and CEO of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said in an interview with The Associated Press. He had earlier given similar comments to NBC's "Today" show.
But Hayes cautioned against condemning the Atlanta star too quickly.

"It's real clear that Mr. Vick himself would acknowledge that he has made a mistake," Hayes said. "I think there is reason to believe in his redemption."

Hayes' comments came a day after the head of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter said Vick should be allowed to return to football after the case is resolved.

"As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," Atlanta NAACP President R.L. White said.

Hayes said White and others who have come to Vick's defense are expressing an overarching frustration with disparities in the criminal justice system.

"People need to understand the backdrop as some in the African-American community make their expressions of support," Hayes said. "That backdrop includes anger and distrust with the criminal justice system that disproportionately pays attention to African-Americans and Hispanics.

"While no dog deserves to be mistreated, the backdrop includes the perception among some African-Americans that the criminal justice system treats them like animals and that nobody seems willing to do anything about the disparity."

Hayes, who said the national group did not have an official position on the case, said he didn't want to speculate about whether Vick was being treated differently because he is black.

"He may in fact be being treated better than some African-Americans and Hispanics who don't have the resources and financial means that he has," Hayes said. "On the other hand, there might be some of a different race or different ethnicity who might be treated a bit differently."

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Three Vick associates have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and say Vick provided virtually all the gambling and operating funds for the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting enterprise. Two of them also said Vick participated in executing at least eight underperforming dogs, raising the possibility of the animal cruelty charges.

We could get into all kinds of discussions on race and racial perceptions. Did Vick get "targeted" because he was famous, or rich, or black? It is a good question. Most whites may feel it was because he was rich/famous... Most blacks may feel he was targeted because he was black...

There have been some dogfighting arrests this summer in the county south of where I live (South Central Ohio), and the reason for those arrests were that the fights were getting to be known about throughout the community, and they were illegal..... Vick couldn't possibly have been investigated for a reason like that.... could he ????

Vick was investigated because his cousin that lived at the house was arrested for drug possession and they obtained a search warrant for the house, that's when they found the dog fighting stuff, which led to the dog fighting investigation, which led to everything else...

"...Its not even that blacks think that he is innocent, its more that some feel as though that he will get more years for the Dog fighting aspect than if he would have killed someone!"

Then "some of them" are stupid. It is true that Vick will receive more jail time for the dogfighting felony than O.J. Simpson got for his deeds. When we look back at that situation we see OJ was cheered upon his acquittal...strange viewpoints some in the black community hold.

Black on black crime especially murder is enormous, we see black leaders calling for more of this service and more of that program...but precious little
consternation at the absent black fathers. The lack of stable male authority family figures contributes greatly to the racist crim of black on black murder.

It is a viscious cycle... so many black kids growing up in single parent homes... way too many absent fathers... way too many young black males who don't know HOW to be a father or WHY they need to be a father, because they never really had one... People wonder why young black males look for role models in the likes of athletes, entertainers, or the neighborhood thug with the nicest car.... well that's because the space reserved for better role models is left vacant... and nature hates a vacuum, the space will be filled with SOMETHING... All too often it's not the right "something", it's the easiest or the flashiest or the sexiest.... Then you throw in that there are just enough messages out there that teach the young black males that the reason you are in the situation you are in is becuase of "the system" or "the man" or whatever.... It's just easier to believe that than to understand that the reason you are in the situation you are in is because of the choices your mother and father made, the choices your grandmothers and grandfathers made..... Black kids are no different than white kids, they are prone to taking the path of least resistance and without somebody there to slap them back onto the right path.... well they just continue on it....

I also don't blame this single mom syndrome entirely on black fathers either... as was discussed in another thread, where I was informed that white men tend to not date black women because they have a lot of attitude and are too independent and not as subservient..... which may be true. Now somebody correct me if I'm wrong but one of the things I've noticed is that black women tend to wear the "single mom" badge with honor... it's almost like an accomplishment for them to be raising kids without a father just to prove that they don't need a man around to help.......

I have no idea how to fix it, it has become a seriously ingrained cultural problem.....

It's funny, I don't remember R.L. White saying that Jimmy "The Greek" deserved a second chance.

Neither do I!

The best way I can describe it is "pure double standard".

Imus says something offensive yet legal.

They want his carrer destroyed.

Vick commits numerous illegal acts.

They expect kindness and mercy.

Preach it Pit,, I'm with you all the way.. The way Sharpton attacked Imus was shameful,..,, so he said something that was less than tasteful. I wouldn't have said it, but it wasn't illegal..

And the GUTLESS company that employed him... Geez, had they used thier ability call Sharpton out, they would have had my respect.. as of th is moment,,, they are lame forever in my eyes.... Weak Azz BasXXXds.

Vick cards chewed by dogs are on eBay
Friday, August 24, 2007 8:07 AM

AP Photo|Rochelle Steffen
Monte, a 6-year-old Weimaraner, chomps down on a Michael Vick football card.Take some trading cards picturing a disgraced NFL superstar. Add some dog slobber and teethmarks. What do you get? The most valuable Michael Vick cards - by far - on eBay, that's what.

Collector Rochelle Steffen of Cape Girardeau, Mo., gave every Vick card she owned to her dogs and let them go to town on the images of the Atlanta Falcons quarterback who is scheduled to plead guilty to a federal dogfighting charge Monday.

Once Monte, her 6-year-old Weimaraner, and Roxie, her Great Dane puppy, were done worrying them, nearly two dozen $1-$10 cards were crumpled, crimped, chewed, torn and generally in a sorry state. Some even had corners missing.

As of Thursday evening, the highest bid on the lot of 22 cards had risen to $455 and more than 2,000 people had viewed the posting. Seventy-seven people already have bid on the auction, which ends Sunday.

The next-most expensive Vick cards - well-preserved specimens from his rookie year - were going for less than half the price of the gnawed ones.

"If I would have had some of his super-duper ones, they would have been right in the mix too," Steffen said Thursday.

She plans to donate the winning bid money to the humane society of the bidder's choice.

Since Vick was indicted on federal dogfighting charges last month, former fans have donated Vick jerseys to dog shelters, while others have tried to cash in by selling Vick T-shirts and chew toys for dogs.

"I'm not angry toward him; my anger is toward anyone who would do this to animals," said Steffen, a college student and artist who wrote a note accompanying her auction to explain it was artistic expression.

"I mean no harm to anyone involved with this auction," she wrote.

Vick said through a lawyer this week he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Steffen's cards join a collection of newly released items on sale. T-shirts are being sold online with slogans that say "Ignorance Breeds Ignorance. Neuter Mike Vick," and "ConVICKt" and others that show dogs urinating on footballs and jerseys.

A few fans also have released "Free Vick" shirts.

The St. Paul Saints, a minor league baseball team known for campy promotions, gave out Vick chew toys Tuesday to the first 15,000 fans with some game proceeds going to the Humane Society. Fans got the St. Paul pig mascot with a No. 7 printed on the back and a tag around its neck with Vick's picture.

The Atlanta Humane Society also has reported former Vick fans mailing in jerseys - often accompanied by financial contributions and letters of outrage over the charges. Those former fans have suggested the Falcons jerseys become animal bedding or rags to help scrub up the messes that dogs leave behind. Other branches of the Humane Society have said they'll take donated Vick items to resell on eBay.

Steffen said she hopes to bring more attention to the abuse of animals involved in dogfighting activities.

"The money donated to local shelters makes this whole idea of selling the cards worthwhile," she said.
