https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-announce-pro-ethanol-measure-tuesday-ahead-iowa-133319268.htmlNEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to announce the lifting of a federal ban on summer sales of higher-ethanol blends of gasoline on Tuesday in Washington DC ahead of a trip to Iowa the same day, according to two sources familiar with the planning of the event. The move, expected sometime around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, is aimed at helping Republicans in competitive elections in the nation's farm belt. Iowa is the largest U.S. producer of ethanol. The lifting of the summer ban on so-called E15 gasoline is expected to be coupled with restrictions on trading biofuel credits that underpin the program, the sources said, but it's unclear whether the restrictions will be detailed or left up to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to decide. The American Petroleum Institute, the largest U.S. oil group, opposes lifting the ban, which will eat into the industry's market share of gasoline sales. The move also faces bipartisan opposition in congress. The U.S. Renewable Fuel Standard requires refiners to blend increasing amounts of biofuels like ethanol into the fuel pool each year, or buy credits from competitors who do. Refining companies that must buy the credits have complained about volatile prices in recent years. The summer ban was put in place as an anti-smog measure, though studies have since shown its environmental benefits are limited. Trump will direct EPA to write a rule lifting the ban, and it would have to be fast-tracked to have it finalized before the next summer driving season. ____________ Anyone else see a problem here? It’s not what’s best for the country, but what will help him solidify support in the farm belt. Which implies that if he already had the support, or minimum to no support, he wouldn’t even had bothered.

I agree with what you are saying but all politicians try to do stuff to help their constituents when they need to win votes... nothing new here and it is actually kind of a good move.

Maybe I got the facts wrong or don't understand, but how is using more ethanol and thereby less oil a bigger pollution threat? I thought ethanol burns much cleaner?

To ocd: It was originally intended as a means to reduce smog. As per the article: The summer ban was put in place as an anti-smog measure, though studies have since shown its environmental benefits are limited. It's not everyday you see a liberal lash out against something that simultaneously saves the environment and takes money out of Big Oil's pockets.

Just wondering, person to person impact environment is extremely limited, does that mean we should stop recycling, reusing, and composting?

There won't be a shortage of clean water.. the ice caps are melting... it'll be Waterworld before we know it! I heard on the news this weekend that the Inuit (the guy who cared about them used the epithet Eskimo) are drowning as we speak.

Why doesn't Flint take care of the problem? Or better yet, why doesn't the state of Michigan take care of it? (my understand is the state agreed - I think even suggested - but def. okayed the piping of water, through pipes that weren't suitable. If I'm wrong on that, forgive me)

President Trump held a Tuesday night rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa – the latest stop in the president’s busy tour boosting GOP candidates ahead of next month’s midterm elections. He began by announcing a decision to remove a federal ban on summer sales of gasoline with high-ethanol blends, thus permitting year-round sales of gasoline with 15 percent ethanol or E15. "We’re going with E15 year round. I made that promise to you during the campaign. I made that promise to you during the primaries," he said. "Promises made, promises kept." The move is seen as particularly helpful for Iowa and other farm states. The summer ban was linked to concerns E15 contributes too strongly to smog. Supporters of ethanol have said the claim is unfounded. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-at-iowa-rally-slams-democrats-they-want-to-destroy-everything

Yeah. Cause the president controls that. Why not? He thinks he is king. He has gone after the NFL, Social Media, Companies moving jobs out of the country... all private industry; why can't he go after big oil for the little guy? All he has to do is take swipes at them to make their stocks plummet, ask Amazon and Facebook about that.

Is it really 3.00 in Ohio? It's around 2.72-2.78 here for 87 octane

You're not really trying to credit Obama for $2 gas after how many years in the $3.50+ range?
No President has much pull on fuel prices, that's all crude oil prices, mostly influenced by OPEC.

Just saying it was $2 then. I actually blame Obama for allowing oil to be exported again and have said it on here before. Trump has undone everything else Obama did, why not that? And Trump also said allowing these pipelines would make gas cheaper... where is that cheap gas?

Maybe it went down a dime... BIG DEAL. Was at about $2 when Obama left office. Whatabout? You realize that if we took off the insane amount of taxes on gas the prices would be insanely cheap right? I can drive 5 min east from my house and pay 3.05 a gallon right now, but I drive 5 min west its 2.65 a gallon. That's not trumps fault, or Obama, that's local and state government putting taxes on Gas to pay for Gov Wolfes pocketbook in PA. The president (Obama nor Trump) have any say what gas prices are outside of fed taxation of it which is about 18.4 cents per gallon. Pa state tax is 50.5 cents a gallon. This is actually one of the few things I would like to have seen Obama or Trump or whoever come out and put a stop too. Certain states are taxing and taxing their people to death on gas. It should be a crime. Come out with a flat tax on gas (say 30 cents) and the gov gets their 15 and the state gets their 15 or whatever. Now we can have a decent convo on the actual cost of gas and why its so high, or well..... because TRUMP!
