Congratulations to Drew Brees.

An amazing accomplishment. Just think of all those that have gone before.

He has been excellent in all aspects of playing.

congrats ... what a player

This is addressed to Overtoad who was one of a handful of posters that made me leave this site due to being overbearing in they’re responses to a differing opinion. In the 2005 or 2006 time frame we had a chance to sell out and get Bress but everyone was worried about his shoulder.
Back at that point I felt we had nothing to lose by taking a chance on Drew Brees.

Baker reminds me of a young Drew Brees and let’s enjoy the next 10 to 15 year ride!

Just wait till next season, I have heard that for over 40 years!

That 60+ yard TD being the actual play that put him into the top in the record books was a nice cherry on top, too

Couldn't be happier for the guy, total class act and truly one of the all time greats

The thing is watching Drew’s career and knowing we didn’t make a play for this guy when it could have made a difference in this franchise still eats my ass!

I am pissed that there is so many on this site that can not admit that they are wrong,

Just venting about what could have been but I am very upbeat about our future!

His arm was a huge question mark due to a shoulder injury when he became a free agent. He completely dislocated his shoulder all the way top to bottom. He tore his labrum completely, and had a 50% tear of the rotator cuff. No one was even sure he would be able to play again.

In retrospect, the Saints made the right decision by signing him, but at the time, it was seen as a very risky signing.

Some more info.

Overtoad was a big part of the attitudes of the day was why I would read but never post. Not sure where he went or who he might be now now but I feel ya.
Brees would have been a nice pickup. One thing is we are not the only franchise to pass him up and wish they hadn't.

I understand that but was that a risk we could not take at that time? Was our QB situation so good that we could not have taken the risk? Risk equals reward!
The fact is we could have had a HOF quarterback and took a pass.

I’m really happy we have the next Brew Brees on our roster now!

If I recall. The Browns had signed Dilfer who could not hit the broad side lava barn from 10 yards.

There will be no playoffs. Can’t play with who we have out there and compounding it with garbage playcalling and worse execution. We don’t have good skill players on offense period. Browns 20 - Bears 17.

Dilfer was a bad QB, especially for us

Man, I never knew there was so much hate for that guy. I always liked his posts and stuff.

I remember at the time I was sort of part of the anti-Brees scene.

The injury of an already less than strong arm mixed with inconsistency in San Diego just didn't make him thrilling. If I remember correctly I wanted Culpepper. Either way, we got Trent Dilfer.

Looks like I had no absolutely idea what I was talking about and Corpus had it all figured out.

Looking back on it, the QB position didn't seem like such a dire problem then. I had no idea it could get to what it had become. I was a Couch fan, but man, drafting Baker (and seeing him play) makes me feel great. I love where this team is headed

Back to Brees.

The guy has been pure class his entire career. He is one of the smartest qbs to ever play the game. His ability to read and manipulate defenses is pristine.

He's overcome a lot of adversity and always makes sure to talk about "we" instead of "me." He doesn't get into trouble and is a sound family man. I loved what he said to his kids as they were hugging him after breaking the record. He said something like "...you can accomplish anything in life if you are willing to work for it...."

After the game, the reporter asked him about it and Drew said that each night before bed, he tells his boys that:

everything is earned and nothing is given.

Let that resonate for a moment.

In an era where so many players are full of entitlement, Drew Brees is a living example of the sound character traits that have helped mold this country into what truly made it great. Hard work, responsibility, overcoming obstacles, and working cooperatively w/others can pay off in an unbelievable manner.

Congrats Drew Brees. You earned it!!!

Greatest display of sportsmanship I've ever seen the way the Redskins just rolled over last night and let Brees do whatever he wanted so he could break the record..

Still don't understand why, sitting at 499 TDs, with first and goal on the 1, they didn't let him set that mark as well instead of bringing in Hill to run it in.. Then they were talking later in the game about how he was trying to drive the field to get 500.. it was right in front of him and the coach didn't take it.

I get spreading it out so they can celebrate another time... but they have a bye next week, then they are on the road... he will probably set the 500 TD mark on the road...

I was confused by that.

Brees likely wouldn't have been the QB he is had he come to Cleveland. We had no where near the team he had around him in NO. He just would've been another name in our list of failed QBs.

There is a wide gap between what he is and being a failed QB.. He would have been good and he would have made us a lot better...

That being said, playing many of his games outside in crappy conditions and bad weather, instead of in the south or in domes.. there is no way he was breaking that record for the Browns last night.

Well, we'll never know how he would've panned out as a Brown. And, good point about the dome...hadn't even considered that.

It's not just about the talent surrounding him, which I assume would make the job of a GM easier if he didn't have to constantly keep drafting QB after QB, but the key point for Drew was playing in the right NFL era and being matched with Sean Payton. The "new NFL" is a perfect match for Drew and Sean. Pass-heavy, rules protect the QB and his ultra accuracy skill.

I saw this video today and thought they had good perspective on Drew and the record, and I don't normally agree with Skip and Shannon (or watch them that often, but it popped up on my YouTube feed so I gave it a listen).

And I looked, Matthew Stafford and Matt Ryan could end up taking this record away. They throw it a ton, rack up yards, play in domes and didn't lose the first few years like Drew did in San Diego. Heck, the way the NFL is going, QBs will be throwing passes with flags on soon and they'll be able to play into their 50's.

I'm not trying to minimize Drew's achievement. It's a win for all of us under 6' guys.
