That was a great article. I do wish The Players Tribune would credit the people who do the interviewing and writing though. That dude had his/her finger on the pulse of the story; I'd like to read some more of their work.

Ward had a strip fumble and recovery tonight. And played really well against the jets receivers.

He’s going to be talked about as tops in the league in a year or two. He is just so quick and sticky and not afraid to tackle.

Love watching him ball out.

That was a big play Ward made. An easy TD after that, and yeah he's been a big part of our D.

When is the last time you can say that we hit on our first two picks in the draft?

Garrett, Peppers, Callaway, and Ogunjobi have all been playing very well too.

certainly had an impact last night!

Ward is making this look easy.

I've never seen any corner in Cleveland have this impact in this short a time span. I was a huge Joe Haden fan in his prime, but not even Joe is sniffing anything close to Ward right now.

Denzel is playing some superb ball, considering this is his 3rd NFL game...

After the strip fumble, He did a very veteran move. Denzel covered the ball up with two hands to protect it while cutting inside, very nice thing to see.

I'd say that he is in that conversation right now.
I cannot recall EVER seeing a rookie, much less a DB, have such a huge impact so quickly.

For the stat guru's, there is NO ONE in the league with a line like his right now. Not just DB's, all defenders.

17 Tackles, 5 PDef, 2 INt, 1 FF, 1 FumRec

If Williams can scheme this kid a CB blitz where he can get home and get a Sack, occasionally, this is a guaranteed trip to the Pro Bowl happening right now.

This guy is playing so good! What a find by Dorsey. I know people thought #4 was too early, but he is paying dividends. I hope it continues.

He was an analytics darling alongside Mayfield, BTW. Just saying. naughtydevil

Hopefully 2017....Garrett and Peppers. If not, 1978. Clay Matthews and Ozzie.

Don't forget Richardson and Weeden.

Actually, on second thought, let's forget about that.

I posted this in the "Name 5 Players" thread but it's probably more appropriate here: https://www.profootballfocus.com/news/pr...ne-in-cleveland

Quote:
Browns’ rookie Denzel Ward piloting a ‘No Fly Zone’ in Cleveland

Thursday night was all about Baker Mayfield, but the man picked just three spots after the superstar signal-caller isn’t playing like an afterthought. Cleveland Browns rookie cornerback Denzel Ward, a local Ohio State product, is leading a revolution on the defensive side of the ball, turning the doormat that was the team’s secondary into a formidable unit – a No Fly Zone.

Matching Mayfield’s heroics stride for stride, Ward allowed New York Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold to complete just two-of-four targets for eight yards into his coverage in Thursday’s contest. He also logged four combined tackles and one defensive stop, all coming together to form his team-high 90.9 overall grade and 91.4 coverage grade.

Jets wide receiver Robby Anderson did beat Ward for a 17-yard gain in the game, but Ward’s tackle of tight end Chris Herndon eight yards behind the line of scrimmage bit back at his yards allowed and counted as his lone defensive stop on the night. Darnold’s other two targets into Ward’s coverage, which fell incomplete, were intended for wide receiver Jermaine Kearse and tight end Jordan Leggett.

Now three games, 202 defensive snaps into his NFL career, Ward has earned an overall grade of 81.9, which currently ranks eighth among cornerbacks, and a coverage grade of 86.3, which is good for sixth. He has allowed receptions on 15-of-21 targets for 130 yards, two touchdowns, and six first downs while logging two interceptions across 117 coverage snaps. He ranks 31st in passer rating allowed (79.6) and 22nd in yards allowed per reception (8.7).

Ward’s 81.9 overall grade ranks second on Cleveland’s defense coming off their win on Thursday night, as edge defender Myles Garrett (86.0) leads the team at first. Garrett’s and Genard Avery‘s play up front has played into Ward, and the rest of the Browns’ secondary in coverage, as Garrett (7) and Avery (6) have combined for 13 total pressures in three games. Also feeding off the attention drawn to the Browns’ edge tandem, second-year interior defensive lineman Larry Ogunjobi leads the team in total pressures with 11. Cleveland’s defense had just 18 pressures through Week 3 in 2017; three games into the 2018 season, the Browns have totaled a whopping 41 pressures.

Behind Ward, veterans T.J. Carrie and Terrance Mitchell, who were both signed as free agents this offseason, have not been disappointments either, as the duo has allowed just 182 receiving yards and one touchdown between them. Also, Mitchell came down with what went on to be the game-clinching interception against the Jets on Thursday. Factor in athletic third-year linebacker Joe Schobert, who has recorded an 84.3 coverage grade in three games, and the Browns’ ability to defend the pass – from pass-rush to coverage – is marching toward being one of the best in the league.

he's honestly been the difference between a good defense and a great one IMO

Ward deserves all the props. The secondary as a whole is benefitting from a much improved pass rush - we've bamboozled two pro bowlers and a rookie QB. It's a team game. The defense if it continues on this trajectory is going to be very, very good - and we're dinged up!

It's nice to see Ward getting some love. He's a great kid and an extraordinary player. His closing speed is amazing. His tackling is so sound. He just knifes across the field to make plays. It's all so sudden.

AB, Michael Thomas, Enunwa.

next up: Amari Cooper.

It's amazing to watch the kid. I hate to say it, because it sounds so vague... but yet you know it when you see it.

This kid just plays faster than most of the other humans on the field.

One could argue 2010... Haden and Ward were a nice tandem in the secondary. The problem is 47 front office and coaching changes will over turn the roster 47 times... both players still starters in the NFL.

Denzel is a Dawg, of course, he's a Brown. But he's also what players' refer to as a dawg, meaning a fierce, intense, ultra-competitive, beast of a player who plays with confidence in his ability to impact the game.

First thing I find remarkable about him is how ferocious he is on the field for a guy of his size. He's not a big man. He is not physically imposing when you look at him. He's just fearless.

Secondly, when he's interviewed he's composed, somewhat understated but again unflinchingly confident in what he can do as a player.

Dorsey got this one right, man!

Man, he is playing lights out! Is this Pro Bowl baiting or what? Our takeaways are incredible. And right now he is straddling his learning curve. Just truly impressed thus far. He brings the game to his victims.

He looks so comfortable out there. His body language oozes a quiet confidence. In a way, he reminds me of Joe Thomas because he is so technically sound. He always looks like he is playing under control. And he appears to play w/a real intelligence.

He's been huge for our defense.

Absolutely, his technique is flawless. He's efficient in his movements, covers like a glove man-to-man, and keeps his eyes on the QB in zone and is quick to the ball. So fun to watch.
