Collins has been bad for awhile. Once/if Schobert gets back his playing time should be reduced greatly. He won’t be on the team next year.

I think we know why Bill Belichick traded him.

I texted my brother in law during the 3rd quarter of the Chiefs game and said that Collins might be the most overpaid player in the NFL.

Have you seen some of the QBs getting paid who are absolutely trash?

My biggest problem w/Collins is his effort. It's why I started the thread.

There are so many examples of him in the area, but not making a real effort to make the tackle. I've seen him not fill gaps or even slow down so he isn't the guy who has to make the 0ne-on-one tackle. It infuriates me.

ex. The "amazing" screen pass that Hunt took to the house.

Can you call it a missed tackle if the LB didn't want anything to do with getting to Hunt?

Is there not a LB on a practice squad somewhere who has NFL ability and gives more effort than Collins?

I know there are some draft gurus on the board...so I'm wondering if there are some gems at LB that could be had.

Somewhat off-topic:

Every year I am surprised at how we don't raid the PS of other teams as a supplement to a draft and to replace players who just aren't worthy of a roster spot.

I understand that such upheaval messes with an already-fragile ST group...but we've picked up street free agents throughout the year...why not take on another teams promising player who actually made the PS?

I dont think COllins will be benched based on Gregg's comments. Effort might not be there, but Williams likes his brain it seems

Unfortunately GW looks like a very stubborn guy, taking into consideration the bounty gate and his past, it would be clever for him to stay away from that type of football.

Honestly still can't figure out why Dorsey kept GW and fired Haley...

Beyond what I have read here, any indicators on Dorsey's opinion of Collins and his play, effort? I would think some folks would be happy LB here. Does GW treasure Collins? I think he is avoiding some contact. This insight says JC is doing some stuff GW needs on D especially with Kirksey gone. I found this insight interesting.

As in most cases we usually see the same football out there.

I'm extremely disappointed in Collins. In years past we were so devoid of talent I welcomed him here and was happy. But now that we are actually building something that requires "FOOTBALL PLAYERS" he is so disappointing. He is very passive and he jogs not Tempo run to the action and very often he is place in the correct place to make a play but unless the guy literally runs into him he pretty much is useless. Burgess was nowhere the answer but my gosh the kid at least put an all out effort.

Avery cannot get experienced fast enough for me and I think that is the next big move for Dorsey...I know he made a play for Mack but we were not an attractive set up yet. We got to draft a great one...not get a BB throw away. He knows what he is doing. I was wrong about this one as I got excited at his talent. But what good is talent if the heart just is not there.

All those big runs seem to be with him in the area waiting to make a play but he will over play his outside penetration and not fight to get control of the edge. I tired of seeing (maybe one of those videos) TD runs with him feet away and he's just jogging to the point of attack...does lay himself out just misses out in the play all together.

Sickening. He can't get cut quick enough, we just are in the worst way right now with LB and DBs going down so now is not the time but hopefully he will not be on the roster next year.

I'm telling you all this kid Vallejo has so much heart I like the way he plays and am glad he's getting some playing time. He's a little light in the butt but heart makes up for it!

Cleveland Browns: Jamie Collins is a liability on defense

https://dawgpounddaily.com/2018/11/10/cleveland-browns-jamie-collins-liability/

The Cleveland Browns were hoping that Jamie Collins could be a play-maker on the defensive side of the ball, but he has instead been a liability.

Cleveland Browns linebacker Jamie Collins has quickly become one of the biggest enemies of the Dawg Pound, as much of the fan base criticizes the 29-year-old’s performance.

When the Browns traded for Collins in 2016, he was thought of being a dynamic player on the defensive side of the ball.

He was a good tackler that was effective at stopping the run. But he was also solid in pass coverage and could make plays on the ball. And lastly, he was great at creating penetration and getting to the quarterback.

In Cleveland, he has shown glimpses of that talent. But for the most part, he has shown more of the reason why the Patriots were willing to trade him: effort.

In his two and a half seasons in Cleveland, there have been too many occurrences of Collins taking plays off. Oftentimes, Collins taking a play off has created a big play and/or a touchdown for the opposing offense.

During last week’s loss to the Chiefs, Collins was slow to fill a gap on the goal-line, which allowed Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt to score an easy touchdown through that gap.

Despite Collins’ slow reaction on that play, Browns interim head coach and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams said he saw no problems with Collins’ effort – via Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com.

“It’s not him. I have to coach better. All of us have to play better on defense. We have to tackle better. Not just him, we all do. Those things are addressed daily, and we have to practice better in those kinds of things and we have talked about it.”

Although Williams said it is a team problem and not a Collins problem, Williams having a tamer attitude since becoming the interim head coach could have prevented him from calling the linebacker out in front of the media.

Even if Williams does not see an issue with Collins, the linebacker has become a liability for the defense. His tackling has been sub-par and he has not been much of a play-maker in coverage.

This season, Collins has made 62 tackles, two sacks, six tackles for loss, one forced fumble, and an interception. According to Pro Football Focus (subscription required), Collins has a 38.7 tackling grade (which PFF categorizes as below average) and a 52.7 coverage grade (categorized as poor).

When the Browns play in their nickel defense, oftentimes it is Collins that is taken off the field. But with Christian Kirksey on injured reserve, Collins is going to be on the field more often.

With the injuries across the defense, the Browns are going to need Collins to step up for the rest of the season. He needs to show consistent effort, as the Browns are going to need Collins to make plays all over the field.

If Collins continues to struggle, there may be a chance that he loses playing time to backup linebacker Tanner Vallejo. Vallejo replaced Kirksey against the Chiefs and was consistently making plays, potentially earning more playing time.

Williams has shown that he is not afraid to shake some things up. With how much the Browns need reliable players on the defensive side of the ball, Collins needs to return to his dynamic playing style if he wants to maintain his playing time.

I thought I'd bump this thread.

Has anyone's opinion changed after these past few games? I see a different Collins out there. More active, more effort, and making more plays.

It appears winning cures all, encompasses Collin's available effort level.

I guess I'll add my .02.

When we sign a veteran player to a big contract I want a player who helps elevate the play of those around him. Not a player who needs to see the tam around him do well to elevate his level of play. And that's what I've seen. When the D wasn't doing well, when the team wasn't doing well, it seemed he had no focus and drive.

You'll see that a lot of times in very young players. Emotions sometimes take over. But that's why you sign your veterans and why they make the big bucks. Because they're supposed to set the tone. Not wait for others to set the tone and follow suit.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Meh. Jamie is a good player. Unfortunately, it appears his otherworldly start in New England hasn't become what his career will be. He's not been an All-Pro or even a Pro-Bowler, but he's making plays and holding his own.

He's not as bad as some portray him, never has been, but he's also never been as good as we hoped he would be.

Sure, but i don't think he's worth like 9.5 million per year. Not for our third best LBer.

We've got Avery, who situationally is a passrushing LB (and effective).

Kirksey will def be on the team because of his contract. Shobert will be on the team too.

Someone like Collins just holds things up for younger, hungrier players at this point. As we continue, I don't see much of a place for him. And I'm willing to bet he'd prefer to be cut before FA rather than after.

We have a strong secondary. I like having four D-Linemen with their hands in the ground.

I agree with you again.

Jamie seems to only elevate his play on primetime tv, or when the games are meaningful. He seemed to be here for a check before hand. I don't want that in the locker room tbh.

But I hope he balls out the rest of the year and we can get a return for him.

It's a "What have you done for me lately?" league and lately he's looked pretty good.

I'm with others in questioning his motivation, but I have a feeling GW already knows if he was taking plays off because they were losing or if he has turned a corner.

I'll trust GW on this one after the season is over.
