Butkus was a big LBer for his era. He was extremely physical. Had a real mean streak. He didn't just tackle guys, he punished him. He makes Suh look like a choir boy.

Those were the days. grin

Good question about LB and the current NFL trends of being a passing league.

Teams still run and always will.

So?

In a 4-3, one could MAJORLY argue that you want a STUD Defensive Tackle to plug and penetrate. Hence affecting Run AND Pass.

Now add another STUD CB opposite Ward. Capable of playing tight man with Ward and dropping LBs into underneath Zone with that STUD DT pressuring up the middle.

Now you've got a Defense that's REALLY HARD TO BEAT without that STUD LB.

There's ways to do this and this is a SUPERB DRAFT for DTs in Round 1&2. And that CB from LSU Greedy Williams is a high 1st rounder also.

Vers. Mocks all over have White REAL HIGH , as in as high as #4.

Whats your “definition” of monster lber ... the game has changed so much since we’ve been around it ..

The game may have changed but my idea of a Monster LBer is still Clay Matthews. A guy who is great at rushing the QB, great at covering TE's and RB's, and great in stopping the run. A three down player who can and does do it all.

I don't think so. I think most of the people responding are just saying we need another LBer and that Collins is the guy who needs replaced.

Precisely.

A great linebacker playing either inside or outside.

I just love the idea of having a monster at all three levels.

We have Garrett and Ward. And Ogunjobi is making waves. We need that mid level guy.

Like I said before I like Kirksey and Schobert. Collins can play but his effort is inconsistent. Avery is showing real promise.

But great is great. You never turn away from a great player at any position.

I think the #1 priority for the Browns right now is Baker Mayfield's development. Whatever that means and whatever it takes to get there is what really matters.

While things are much, much better than they've been in a long, long time I still find myself frustrated with the all-too-familiar thoughts that we have a lot going on - or not going on - that really flaws a team-wide evaluation.

It appears that we have our guy at QB. But the newness of the OL and the rawness of our rookie/injured WRs creates wonder as to the evaluation of Baker's development and what the team needs really are on 'O'. We've been down this road many times STR, but with the QB, it makes it palatable.

Similarly with the defense where we have cornerstones in Garrett and Ward but we get hit with injuries to our new FA CBs and then Shobert goes down while Collins plays like crap. So...what does our defense really need? If Collins played like he's paid and Mitchell didn't break his arm...how different would we view our needs on 'D'.

I know we aren't the only team that goes through this...but we've been going through this STR. Having the QB (finally), stud pass rusher and stud corner...along with maybe the LT...is the silver lining. Unfortunately, we are still a ways away from being able to put together a solid evaluation of what we really need.

I guess if I had to name stud LB'ers in todays game Luke Kuechly would be the standard. C.J. Mosley is another but Luke Kuechly to me is the prime example.

Kwhip brought up a valid point that many teams focus more on a run stuffing DL and don't seem to have a monster MLB. But I'm not sure if that's by design or the fact that those great MLBer's require so much talent in todays game that they are simply a very rare breed.

The speed and size of players in todays game require an elite athlete with a combination of size and speed in a MLB if you expect great results. He requires the size and strength to rush against monster OL players while having the agility to cover RB's and TE's in the passing game. That's a hybrid athlete of rare availability.

IMO that's why it was an easier position to fill in days gone by but a much harder position to find now. When OL players were smaller like in the 60's and even 70's, a MLB could be smaller and still accomplish playing the position. That made it an easier position to fill. Not so much anymore.

I think that White could play any LB position.

He has strength, speed and quickness, and understands angles. He is outstanding from sideline to sideline. He is aggressive, and perhaps overly aggressive at times, which might be his biggest weakness.

Watching him take down offensive players is just amazing. He locks on, and most players go down immediately, often going backwards, like they were hit by a car. I think that he would be a great addition to our defense.

Yeah, I think White could play Collins LBer spot. I also think that Schobert could play outside, as well. That would be up to the coaches to figure out.

What I do know is that would give us dynamic players at all three levels of the defense.

We won't be wondering which QB the Browns will be picking in next years draft.

Well .. Taylor will be gone. We may need a 3rd or 4th round QB, or maybe pick up a 5th rounder with one of our extra picks we've acquired via trades.

#Bucs WR DeSean Jackson requested a trade from Tampa Bay, sources say. The team has resisted. But an intriguing name to watch. My story:

"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

DJax is the type of WR who would pair nicely w/Landry. He has that deep speed and big play ability.

I couldn't agree more. We're finally starting to see this young talent develop, and they're beginning to show that they have all the makings of a very good football team.

We're talking about a 2-4-1 team. That isn't lost on anyone. But it is painful how close this team is to being 6-1 in spite of being led by rookies or second year players at most core positions.

Personally, I think that's why people are so damn frustrated. Every play, every moment is under such intense scrutiny because from all games except the Chargers, just one or two plays were ultimately the difference between a win or a loss.

Throughout that, two undeniable conclusions are being sadly overlooked.

1. Perhaps most importantly, this team packs some incredible young talent. Ward, Mayfield, Chubb, Harrison and Avery are just an incredible collection of rookies. They have been so good, flashed so much potential, and are all players at key positions. If this is what they look like now, imagine what they look like with time, experience and development.

Meanwhile, some other young players from the Sashi era are making their mark. Garret, Ogunjobi, Peppers, Higgins, Schobert and Ogbah have all shown continued improvement.

Then there are some older additions like Mitchell, Randall, Tretter and Collins have all played well thus far.

Simply said, this team isn't lacking talent - and the vast majority of that talent is young, hungry and almost certain to get even better.

2. This team has improved. They've improved a lot. The 1-15 season was a disaster. The 0-16 season was worse in record only. Much of the struggles extended to injury and a rookie QB in over his head. The team was better, but couldn't overcome themselves.

This year, however, this team could frankly be sitting up the top of the standings. Difficult schedule, horrible officiating and a dependence on some very young players. In spite of this, the team has clearly improved leaps and bounds.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why people are so mad at a young team who has clearly improved by a significant margin. It hasn't extended to winning, but I think anyone would have to be incredible pessimistic to think this development won't evolve in to consistent winning.

At the end of the day, only two things matter to me:

- The roster is better.
- The roster is poised to contend.

As I said all off-season, I also think it's important to remember that the Steelers and Ravens are getting a lot older, a lot quicker. The AFC North is showing signs of slowing, and the Browns are poised to make some serious moves.

I can understand if people want the coach, or anyone, gone. It is what it is. I cannot, however, understand why this season has inspired so much anger and hostility. I cannot remember a time when this team's future was so bright, and so close to being bright.

Except for a handful of poster, maybe 10 at the most, I don’t feel like any fans want X person fired no matter what the result of this season. They want wins. If the team ripped off three wins in a row, the frustration level would drop like a stone. I think a majority of posters see the potential here, and it makes it just that more frustrating when the team can’t quite get it done. In golf terms, this season has been a lot of lipped out putts.

I’ve been hard on the staff, I freely admit it, but winning would do a lot to make me, and many fans, ease off. Just simple frustration talking most of the time.

No doubt, and that starts today. Like I've said, beating the Steelers away is like waking up on Christmas with Sasha Grey in your stocking. Okay, not quite that good, but still good.

With that said, I feel like the pressure on the coaching staff is cutting off your nose to spite your face. Ultimately, the coaches aren't why this team is losing. The team is losing because young players aren't consistently enough making plays. I feel like it's fair to say they will develop enough to make those players.

And firing coaches, no matter how green the grass is, is a destructive action. Learning a new system and trying to adapt the existing players to a new way of playing supersedes perfecting the existing execution. Fixing these annoying miscues like false starts and illegal formations don't come for overturning the organization, they are caused by it. The headscratching plays are only headscratching because they've not yet made it into the coaches "Well, damn, that doesn't work" folder.

I think we can all agree that winning is the remedy to these overturns - but I feel like we're still pretending this losing isn't systemic of these overturns. It is.

All valid points. And if the coaching staff was getting them better on a continuous basis, it would be the better of the two routes we seem to be facing. But, the burning question is: Are they?

Does the team look better on a week-to-week basis? Is the staff learning what can and cannot be accomplished by this team on a week-to-week basis? Just from the eye teast, neither seems to be happening.
