I believe he will. I think that is why they went with Kitchens and not Zampese. Zampese is a Hue guy, Kitchens was a Haley guy.

Well, if it entails a few more running plays and a few less reverses, I’m good with that.

I asked in another post if the Haley playbook could be tailored to the WCO, as another poster thought we were looking to install, since it is what GB and KC do.

The WCO seems, on the surface, to be a good fit for Mayfield, since accuracy is his bread and butter.

Bake is tough kid, mentally as much as physically. He will be fine. Just needs a good coaching staff to show him the way. The FO didnt think he was getting that, adn went in a different direction. on to KC.

I think if its me, you dont want to change too much if anything right now. We are absolutely going to have a new HC and OC next year. I dont want Baker to have to learn new playbook for 8 games, then another playbook next year. Keep it simple, keep it what he knows so far, and keep him upright. We will be fine. Its not always about the playcall, but execution of said call. Under Hue and staff, we never just could execute.

I think that Williams was selected simply because he was the last guy standing.Who else were they going to put in as head coach?

It does give Williams the potential to rejuvenate his reputation a bit, but he probably isn't the voice a team in turmoil needs. We'll see.

Also, while the defense has created a ton of turnovers, they have had their struggles. They have been up and down, and the rush defense has flat out sucked. They have created turnovers, but they are still one of the worst in points allowed.

I do like Kitchens as OC though. I think that he's a bright and capable guy, and that Baker will benefit from his creativity, and from him making some changes to the offense to better fit what Baker does well. Who knows? Maybe having just one main voice on offense will be helpful. Hopefully.

I agree. Williams proved to be the guy who wasn't involved with any of the drama and just did his job ... and has experience as HC to stabilize

Wasn't it 7 when he said this before the season started or something? Don't worry, he's not coming back next year.

I don't know if I want him back next year or not (I don't think he will be back or not, if I had to guess I would say no), I just thought it was hilarious.

Quote:
Of course Browns promote Gregg Williams, the coach behind Bountygate scandal

Dan Wolken, USA TODAY Published 3:51 p.m. ET Oct. 29, 2018

If nothing else, give the Cleveland Browns credit for leaning into their long-earned reputation as the most embarrassing franchise in the NFL.

In most circumstances when a bottom-feeding team cleans house in the middle of the season, it’s barely worth mentioning who was appointed to be called the head coach for a few weeks. It would have been nice if the Browns had abided by that tradition this time after disposing of Hue Jackson and offensive coordinator Todd Haley on Monday.

Instead, the Browns went full Browns by naming Gregg Williams their interim coach.

Seriously, Cleveland? This is what you want us to talk about in the middle of a season where having Baker Mayfield makes your team seem moderately endearing and potentially semi-competent?

Regardless of what you think about Williams as a defensive mind, his days as the face of an NFL organization should have been over when he, you know, was busted in 2012 for putting bounties on NFL players.

It’s bad enough that Williams was allowed back in the league after a one-year suspension. But to now reward him with another chance to be a head coach given his history of actively encouraging players to injure each other? What a disgrace. What a weak, desperate look by a franchise that must be addicted to being mocked.

Was there really no other option here for the Browns?

When you’re 2-5-1, the goal for Cleveland should have been to be forgotten until it was time to make a hire in January. Instead, the Browns looked at their lineup of in-house coaches and said, “We want the one who’s going to connect our franchise to one of the most despicable scandals in NFL history.”

For those whose memory is fuzzy about who Williams is and what he’s about, the NFL found “irrefutable proof” in 2012 that Williams, during his three years as defensive coordinator of the New Orleans Saints, had orchestrated a bounty program by which players would get cash rewards from a pool for knocking opponents out of a game.

In addition to the regular $1,000 rewards for “cart-offs,” special bounties were placed on star quarterbacks such as Aaron Rodgers, Cam Newton and Brett Favre and the money went up in the playoffs.

Even worse, Williams has barely shown any remorse for his actions, choosing to blame everybody else rather than show some introspection about so blatantly crossing the line of acceptable competition, even in a brutal game like football.

This, for instance, is what Williams said about Bountygate in 2015 during a radio appearance on KMOX in St. Louis:

“One of the things was, it was on my watch, but there was nothing that hasn’t been done in the last 50 years in the sport and there was nothing done to try to hurt somebody,” Williams said. “There was never done with anybody trying to injure somebody. I’ve said this before, I take a look at all these high school programs, Little League programs, college programs and you see the decals on the side of the helmet and you wonder, you get those decals because you shake hands and kiss after the game or you get those decals because you rushed for 100 and you threw 17 touchdown passes and you knocked the stuffing out of somebody? I remember over at Excelsior Springs when I’m 16 years old, I had a big hit in a ballgame and all of a sudden I got a movie certificate and it wasn’t because I helped the guy up, it’s because I knocked the guy down. It’s just one of those things that we’re always trying to find little bitty advantages in sport and it was unfairly and uncharacteristically portrayed the wrong way.”

The NFL may say it’s serious about player safety now that it's paying out a $1 billion settlement in a concussion lawsuit, but even without that, football should have evolved beyond neanderthals like Williams.

He's not good enough to bring that kind of filth back to the forefront. He’s not worth it.

Literally anyone else would have made more sense to lead the Browns for the final eight games of the season. Of course, if they actually did something right, the Browns wouldn’t be the Browns.

Frankly, the defense has not held up.

I do credit the turnover increase to William's emphasis on getting turnovers.

However, the defense has melted in critical situations. Up eight with a minute and a half to go.

The beat down by the Chargers. The run defense against the Steelers.

We have talent on defense and I expected more from them.

Many of our struggles on Defense this season are not Williams fault.

Dorsey got rid of the core middle of our defensive Line in Meder and Shelton (Both of whom were ranked in the Top 10 of DT against the run by Pro Football Focus) I like Okunjobi, but he is a liability against the run and so is the other DT Coley and Davis....

We get gashed against the run because those guys in the middle get pushed around. They may be slightly better against the pass, but those guys are MAJOR downgrades against the run...

in 2017 we ranked 7th against the run, opponents only averaged 3.35yrds per attempt against us, and we only gave up 97 yards per game

This year we are ranked 28th against the run, teams average 4.61 yards per carry against us, and we are giving up 138 yards per game.

See what happens Dorsey when you get rid of two Top 10 run stopping DT? Does he forget before the season he is in the same division as Laveon Bell,Joe Mixon, just to name a few?

That was the only move Dorsey made this off season that really ****** me off...that was the best DT combo we have had in Cleveland since the days of Micheal-Dean-Perry and James Jones when we had a top ranked run d...after a decade of watching us get run on and run to death over and over and over for 10 years we finally find 2 DT that put a stop to that, and Bonehead Dorsey gets rid of them, moron!

On a side note, i kinda hope Williams wins out or goes 6-2 down the stretch, if he does, that means we finish with a .500 record, be awfully hard to get rid of Williams then if the team responds. If Williams wins out or goes 6-2 and we get rid of him, no one will want to come here. It would be quite a feat for Williams to turn around an 0-16 team last year from this mess to not get the job.

I like Williams, he is a firey competitor, he don't take peoples BS, and he is a motivator of men...I think he is going to respond in a big way...I think we start winning with him and he becomes the guy moving forward.

this means we keep our staff and the same O system Haley brought in for Mayfield it will just be run by Kitchens instead which is a win-win for us.

If you care about the Browns, Mayfields development, and continuinity...you better hope Williams wins out or atleast goes 6-2 the rest of the way to ensure we don't blow the whole thing up again. I wasn't a fan of Hue, but i always liked Williams.

We get it you don't like GW. You posted it over and over and its alright your ok with your opinion. At this point what done is done. I don't think he is HC material but frankly I like his hard nose , old school way of doing things. He doesn't seem to coddle anyone and pushes accountablity. Before you say it he is accountable for what hes done and dose not deny it. He paid his due and hasn't been in trouble since then. By the way he is not the only person to do this bounty stuff, just the one that got the most press.

I have bashed Gregg Williams over and over? Really?

Some of you amaze me. There were guys who trashed Hue dozens of times each day and you never said one damn word.

Please show me the last time I trashed Gregg Williams before posting that article.

Good God, this place is so freaking absurd.

That's a good article, and a major strike against Williams. I have an issue with this though (not you, just the situation.) Sean Payton is never mentioned or faulted for it. He would have a HC job in seconds if he got fired. Why the double standard?

I believe Payton was also suspended for a year for trying to cover up what Williams did.

Both guys ultimately got back in the league at their former spots......one as a HC and the other as a DC.

I really don’t care about bounty gate anymore.

If he can coach, then let’s go.

Right, but if people say William's isn't fit to be a HC because of his past, how is Payton still a HC, and one of the more respected and sought after coaches of he would ever leave New Orleans.

This guy wrote an article about how Williams being a HC is a disgrace to the Browns and the NFL while ignoring the fact that the HC for bountygate is still the HC now.

I wouldn't be opposed to him being our HC in 2019. I think he has character and can be a leader.

Edit: I watched the presser today, all of it, and I liked how he told the media he was done talking about Hue, and bounty gate.

That's fine. I'm not arguing or faulting you, I've just always found it odd that Payton never catches flack from anyone for the whole situation while William's has to wear it like a scarlet letter.

Gregg Williams on Myles Garrett’s criticism of gameplan: ‘Can’t take responsibility? Just blame me’

Updated 10:17 PM; Posted 9:36 PM

https://www.cleveland.com/browns/2018/11...t-blame-me.html

BEREA, Ohio — Browns interim head coach Gregg Williams indicated that Myles Garrett’s criticism of the defensive gameplan following Sunday’s 33-18 loss to the Steelers sounded like an excuse to him and that he’ll “get to the bottom of it.”

Among other things, Garrett said, “I think we just took the wrong approach this time. I think we should've just stayed with what we did the first time, just go with base calls and punch them in the mouth. I feel like we should've stuck with the same game plan."

He also said, “They were able to adjust, and we have to do the same thing.''

In his first press conference as interim head coach on Wednesday, Williams stressed that excuses won’t fly.

“People handle frustrations differently,’’ Williams said. “One of the biggest gifts – I tell the coaches that get a chance to work with me and players – is my biggest gift that I give you if you have a hard time taking responsibility is blame me.

“They have had heard me say that over 100 times here. You can’t take responsibility? Just blame me. I’m OK with it.’’

He added, “We’re going to discuss it, but there are people that respond that way. That’s just how they are. Some of you guys have kids. I have a bunch more kids, too. It’s crazy in some of the world and how we accept excuses anymore. My dad did not accept many excuses when I was growing up.’’

Williams noted that “it just is what it is. He’s fine. He’s totally fine. It’s really a non-issue.”

Garrett didn’t think after the game that Williams would be bothered by his critique.

"I don't see it that way,'' he said. "He wants to go with the best plan possible, and if we think what works best would be what we did before, then he's going to take our adjustment into account. He's not going to bash us for having an opinion. He wants us to be able to be on the field and be comfortable.''

Williams’ “no excuses” mantra comes on the heels of lecturing Garrett and the rest of the defensive players about criticizing the officials. Garrett came out after the Chargers game and blasted the officials for missing the false start on Philip Rivers’ 29-yard TD pass win the 38-14 LA victory.

“I don’t want to hear their excuses,’’ Williams said last week. “I don’t make the excuse. I don’t want them to make the excuse. Everybody’s going to make a mistake. We have to play. We have to do our part. That particular play (when the false start was not called) that has been talked about all along. I’m hot at how we handled the play, not how the referee handled the play.

“We have to finish the rush. We stopped rushing. We stopped finishing the coverage. You have to finish the coverage.”

Garrett was also highly critical of himself after the Steelers game, in which he was held to one sack for a career-high eight on the season. Running back James Conner rushed for 146 yards, and the Steelers rolled up 421.

"It's never going to be good enough for me,'' he said. "Had a sack early, had a tackle, but other than that, I was holding my edge but didn't make enough plays. Just being in the right place at the right time is not enough. We've got to be all over the field and we've just got to dominate and I wasn't there.''

He was hoping for an Aaron Donald-type highlight reel. Instead the Browns lost their third straight game and 15th straight in Pittsburgh to drop to 2-5-1.

"I wish that on every game I play in, but sometimes it’s not in the cards,'' he said. "Sometimes they’ve got a plan for you and they get paid too, and they executed their plan and for the most part they kept me off the quarterback and kept me off James.''

I feel somewhat better about Williams after hearing him today.

We'll see what happens. Maybe the team needs a drastically different voice.

First impressions from the PC:

No nonsense... with a lot of nonsense. Dude goes off on some tangents in his stories and then tries to bring them around to make a point. He pulls it off more often than not, and if you don't think he does - he'll just tell you to shut-up anyway.

I like that Mayfield talked smack at him from day 1. Baker seems, more and more, like he's years ahead between the ears. Most rookies would be intimidated, Baker knew what makes Williams tick and put some of the same right back in his face. Good stuff. I think these two will have a good relationship.

If you do something dumb, you'll likely get yelled at. I think we'll see Gregg yell in Bake's face within two weeks.

I think he has a genius approach to players whining and general discord... "If you can't handle the responsibility ~ blame me. It's my fault and I can take it." First, he's telling players and media alike he really doesn't care about that junk... the noise. Second, he's telling players this is a tough game for tough guys. His demeanor is: If you get your feelings hurt or are upset about how hard your job is, that's my fault for overestimating you. Blame me. I like it.

Gregg sounds to me like he has already planted the ground rules for being head coach going forward. He's basically stated flat-out that he will also be the DC... interesting.

Gregg seems fiery and straight to the point. As a character trait in the game of football, I like it, especially with players. How that works out on all fronts as head coach? I'm not sure. It will be interesting to watch the dynamic between he and Kitchens, Freddie seems much more reserved.

I think it was smart to give this guy an audition for eight weeks. If Jackson was having the rug pulled and Haley didn't leave you warm and fuzzy, no sense in keeping either. May as well give Gregg a stab at his second gig, we seldom learn who you are as a HC before then anyway. He was a head coach once, on an average team, with an aging Drew Bledsoe. 3-13, 8-8, 6-10 and gone. Buffalo played in a tough division, his 8-8 campaign left them dead last. In the end, he made no headway in three years. His final year his defense was playing much better, but the trio of Bledsoe, Travis Henry and Eric Moulds was no longer anything to write home about.

As always, when things change in Berea, it's not usually a script you could have written beforehand. Bottom line here, Gregg really has his work cut out for him. Like now... this Sunday. If his defense gets punked all over the field, Monday morning will not be pretty for anybody. And there aren't a lot of Mondays left to play with.

Tick, tock.

We had good luck when a certain DC replaced an offensive genius some 34 years ago.

Maybe we get lucky again. It would be about time we got did.

He can come in riding a unicycle, juggling apples as long as we see some wins. He’s a polarising figure for sure. I like some of it, some of it - meh. Players seem to love playing for him whilst still being held accountable. That seems a good start. Good luck Coach.

I remember his first presser when Grossi asked him about Bountygate and he replied "Are you Tony? We're not here to talk about that. Next question.". It was funny, though I'm sure Grossi didn't agree.

I highly doubt anything GW says or does from this point on matters one whit. I'd be shocked if the Browns win another game or two this season. The whole thing will get blown up again after it's over anyway. For now, it's a death watch until coach hiring season, then it's FA, draft, hope, exuberance, followed by let down, disappointment and despair. Luck? No, my friend. It's like the script is written in the stars.

Those that don't know Gregg's type of personality do not realize he is lying about these "stories" as a rube. He gets a kick out of it, and likes to see who he can get riled up over it.

I have a friend just like it. He will tell us how he used to surf and was once attacked by a shark but got away. Then the next day he will say "ive never left Pittsburgh in my entire life". He wants you to pick up on his false stories and gets a kick out of it. Cause if you bring it up, he gets a smirk on his face and laughs. Its just a game to him and his personality.

He likes to see how obscure and crazy he can make a story before he gets called out on it.

I bet you a dollar to donuts, he and his circle laugh about it afterwards.

What would your alternative be?

He has HC experience.
He has done a decent job with our Def.
He absolutely motivates the players.

Given the situation, give me a better alternative

Hope he stays, cause he knows he has a growing talented team that he can continue to build. I think Lincoln Riley will give him full control on the D side of the ball and they will work well with each other. Dorsey is going to continue to make great additions into the defense.

Just in one season. Ward, Randall, Mitchell and Avery as additions on the defense along with some depth.

Also don't forget the one who got away Kendrick let go due to White Collar crime.

Dorsey will continue to add impact and depth to the Defense.

I think if given full power (again by my dream choice of Lincoln Riley) he will stay cause he wants to build this and regain his legacy that was torn down cause of the Bounty gate.

If he can build a Championship Defense with the much maligned Browns D...he will be considered a Legend...

Tabber,

**IF** we got Riley, why do you think he would keep Gregg and not bring his own guy? I have heard a few say this, and wasn't sure why he would.

This probably won't end well.

I loved that part. For real.
It tells me a lot of positive stuff about his character.

Riley won't keep Williams unless he is told that he is doing so.
That is just how it works.... and it doesn't matter what name you insert into the HC position.

Cause in college he has shown that he is willing to give the D to the coordinator. Also I think the D has something special cooking.

Why, cause the guy is an offensive mind and that is what he will be fixing and running and he would want somebody like Williams who has been building something here already to continue as he takes control of the Offense. I can also see Kitchen staying as the "OC" but it will be a situation where Riley will be calling the plays???

Can't say for certain.

just like I think Hue wanted to work on the O and got Williams clearly a DC who can run things from top to bottom without needing help.

Just opinion obviously I have no Facts to back me.
