With your background you should understand how staph works. It's most likely not a Cleveland Clinic issue as much as a person who carries the germ issue. If CC has a lot of infections from the general patient population then maybe it is a CC problem. I had a staph infection in the spring. I either gave it to myself or picked it up giving a massage. Either way, it's a pretty common germ to carry on your skin. Perhaps the Browns just happen to have a lot of players that carry it. http://women.webmd.com/Women-Medical-Reference/staph-infection-cellulitis

is it something that can be killed with a vigorous cleaninge and chemicals before surgery to cut down on the risk of infection?

Michelle, it's everywhere. We see it where I work all the time. Staph is on everyone's body. The resistant strains are the real problems, though. The abscess that Fraser just had cleaned out is something we see quite often. We haven't had someone with one for a little while, but we always seem to get a run of them.
The biggest thing people need to do is wash their hands. Very simple.
But I see people all the time who don't. Go into a restaurant or bar and watch how many guys you see go in and wash their hands. Less than half I bet.

Exactamundo.......everyone carries it, that fact seems to be lost on a lot of people. When you have an open cut, or a surgery of course, then the staph has a route into the system.
Washing of hands and proper utilization of band-aids can be very helpful.
The funny thing about hand-washing is that most don't know how to even do it properly anyway. Most people get their hands wet, add some soap, scrub, and then they reach up with their clean hands and turn the dirty faucet handle off!...........grab a towel and dry your hands, and use the towel to turn the faucet off.
I also try to use the towel to open the door as well to make my exit.

Right...which is why it irks me when people post that the Browns are cursed with a Staph epidemic.

Actually it IS a cleveland clinic issue...or a hospital issue for that matter... It is a very common problem for hospitals....like lot of ppl said in this thread when a strain becomes resistant to the regualr sterilization methods of the hospital, it can easily infect a person during surgery or their stay at the hospital.... Where does it come from? like you said from other patients who have it on them..it's part of normal body flora of a healthy individual...that is why this pathogen is called opportunistic bacteria because they won't harm you if it's just on you...but as soon as it gets into a wound ur screwed... As you can see staph is a very common problem not only in cleveland clinic but lot of hospitals throughout the US http://www.doctorslounge.com/infections/articles/nosocomial/staph_hospital/index.htm

We can't blame the browns for having it...but we can think we are CURSED for having a resistant strain in the complex or at cleveland clinic...

Right....I'm familiar with staph since I had it. I did a lot of research and learned what I could. Your comment is exactly why I said maybe the Browns have just had a lot of players that infect themselves. I'm sure hospitals have something to do with it, but we wouldn't get the infection if we didn't have open wounds. In my case, a tiny slice to my finger with a knife. Fun stuff.
And, it only makes sense to me that staph would be more common in a hospital...that's where they're doing surgeries where staph can invade your body. I just think BLAMING the hospital is silly. (Unless the CC doesn't sterilize properly...and I'm sure they do.)

Well thts the thing...we can't blame them...they do wht they can...but that doesn't always work because they become resistant to the sterilization method the hospital uses(and that is why it's a hospital issue)... I think the best way to do it would be to keep changing that method and not use it long enough for a strain to become resistant...just like antibiotics if used long enough won't work anymore...JMO It's sad to think that bentley could have been back right now and on his way to becoming almost 100% healthy if it wasn't for dumb staph

I agree...change it up every now and then to kill the bacteria. But I think hospitals learned that a bit too late to matter in most cases.

I swore I read an article when Kellen had his bout of staph that he would rub some cream or lotion on the leg/knee. That right there could have been the problem. If his wound wasn't cleaned, if his hands were dirty, you're just spreading the stuff around your incision. The infection rate would reduce drastically if people just washed their hands properly. I'm not a big fan of using antibacterial soap. Washing them properly works just as well, and overusing antibiotics causes resistant bacteria. So the same could apply with antibacterial soap.
I always hear people sniffling or couging and saying they need antibiotics. And some doctors prescribe them for everything. If you have a cold of the flu, it's caused by a virus. Not a bacteria. So therefore the antibiotic will do nothing. And if you have some minor little infection, just let your body fight it without whining to the doctor for some antibiotics. I think people can deal with a runny nose for the week.

I think the only way to really get rid of the resistent staph infections is to boil the whole clinic once a week. We should build a giant pot around them.
Or maybe just burn it to the ground every once in a while.

This is key indeed! My Dr. will NOT give any of my family antibiotics unless 100% necessary! He says let your body fight it, when you really need the antibiotics they will then work for you!
This article hit home as my nephew barely survived a flesh eating bacteria a few years ago. He picked of all things a chicken pox scab and contracted it somehow. They cut so much flesh off of him that he today looks like he got the worst of it in a lion attack! He is a fine strapping football star at a local school now I'm happy to say! Urge your kids to keep their hands off of boo boos!
And for us adults... Wash your hands!!!!

Sounds like you have a good doctor, not one who jus tries to please their patients.
And yes, wash your hands.
