This time tomorrow, I'm under the knife. I went through pre-admission testing Friday and I think I'm all ready (as ready as a person can be). I found out ~3 months ago I had a 25 X 18 mm benign tumor behind my ear that's pushing on my brainstem. I got a loud ringing in my ear one afternoon that wouldn't go away. They thought it was an infection for a while and asked me to get an MRI to confirm. Supposedly these things are super rare (1 in 100,000). This stupid thing grows on and wraps around the hearing, facial and balance nerves. The surgeon categorized it as a "large medium", for crying out loud, as a Cleveland fan, I can never be 1st place, always 2nd (he got a kick out of that joke). When most people get this diagnosis, they are given 3 options: 1. Watch and wait (if it's small and not pushing on the brain, do nothing. These things grow ~1mm per year.) 2. Gamma Knife Radiation (mine is almost too big for this and I have some watery cysts in the tumor which might cause them to burst with radiation, not good.) 3. Brain Surgery (they cut open the skull behind my ear to get at its removal). So, surgery it is. I'm going to have an awesome scar that will scare kids (  ), I'll probably be deaf in that ear, my balance will be ruined for sure but it should return with exercise (the right ear and eyes eventually pick up the slack) and there are dozens of other crappy things that could happen too, not to mention just the general riskiness of opening your brain up to the air. I guess the surgery is 6+ hours and I should be home within 4-5 days. If I can use my phone at some point, I'll try to let you all know I'm still alive. Go Browns!

Damn! I remember you saying you had a medical condition. I didn't know it was this serious. You are one of the very best posters on this board. Always rational, logical, and fair-minded. I enjoy reading your takes.
Your tumor sounds similar to the one I had on my carotid artery. I don't know if this works, but I think going in w/a positive attitude and doing everything you can to recover is huge. Beyond huge.

Sorry to hear this bro. Got a cousin that went through all of this with the same kind of surgery. He does well now with a hearing aid and he gets around good. His scar is not that bad either, you have to look for it to know he has it. But you are right about the balance part, it takes time.
