We are a team with a lot of holes to fill. For Baker to be successful, like any QB in the NFL, he will need talented players around him. To waste a 1st round pick on another QB, is well.....not intelligent.
I am ok with drafting another QB later in the draft as a project, but c'mon.
No need to outthink ourselves by drafting a first round pick to push Baker, or whatever the thinking is.
Let's see how he develops with a season under his belt and an off-season of being the unquestioned guy. Get him a stud left tackle, a legit #1 wide receiver, and upgrades at a few other positions (and depth) while we're at it.
Ummm, so it is still ridiculous, right? We have some other positions that have been neglected in favor of the Qb draft parade. Let's see what may be coming our way with what, 11 picks?
BM hardly seems to need to be jacked up to compete and play. A great WR might help more. Get your "competition" later.

If they drafted a QB in the first round next year, if I were Mayfield, may first automatic response would be "trade me now." I'd probably be more dumbfounded than anything. Is this some sort of a gotcha or joke? It has to be, just has to be.
Mayfield is playing very well right now and is getting more comfortable as he goes along. This time is absolutely critical, don't mess with it.
1. Culture change - Baker Mayfield needs to know that he isn't just going to skate by here. He needs to know this isn't "his team" not until he proves its his team.
Seriously, have you watched Baker Mayfield Mic'd up from the Falcons game. This is his team, he knows it, the players know it, the coaches know it, the owners know it and fans know it. Seems as if you are the only one that doesn't already know it.
Total waste of a pick.

I think it's safe to say Baker Mayfield will serve as his own competition until he's the best in the game.
"sigh"
us Browns fans always putting the cart before the horse. Baker Mayfield hasn't proven anything except he has won 3 games in the NFL...been a lot of other QB over the last 30 years that won a few games in the NFL too...that was no indicator they were any good longterm.
what has Mayfield proven exactly to anoint him "The Savior" of the Browns?
How many Division Titles has he won? How many playoff games has he won? How many seasons has he had an above .500 record? Has he won 30 games as a pro yet?>
He hasn't proven a *** **** thing. Sure he has done a few good things, he has also done some terrible things like turning the ball over.
Baker Mayfield single handily cost us the 2nd Steelers game....EVERYTIME the Browns went 5 wide with an empty backfield the Steelers would audible and overload the weak side and blitz, Not ONCE did Mayfield ever recognize this and change protection, audible into a different play, or even so much as call a timeout. Instead he snapped the ball, was under duress almost right away and pressured, sacked, etc...he has a long way to go, a long way to go.
Nothing has been decided yet, Mayfield hasn't proven anything except he has won 3 games. For anyone to say "he is the guy" with any kind of authority is going to have to wait till Mayfield has played 30 games....until then you keep investing and trying to improve at every position....even QB, and im not talking about taking guys that can be backups, im talking about taking guys that would be seen as starters.
We can either continue to improve and get better, or we can toss all our eggs in one basket(Mayfield) and roll the dice on a 50/50 shot he works out or not, or we can continue to invest so we are not left with our pants down if something unforeseen happens.
I think its foolish to put all our eggs in one basket when Mayfield has yet to win a meaingful game, let alone a division, playoff game, or anything else...
I guess we will see what happens, if were not picking in the Top 3 then we won't have a chance to take a guy anyways so it will be moot.
I mean...if you’re hellbent on going down with the ship, go ahead.
But you’re on an island. A real lonely one too.

Baker was the #1 overall pick and has shown by far the most promise of any of the rookie QBs in this class.
This doesn't mean he's the savior. He has to continue to work hard and improve. There were some comparisons to Drew Brees earlier in the season... well he is having his best year yet at age 39! Baker wasn't even supposed to play this year.. he got very few first team reps. What he's shown so far in his young career is very impressive.
Again, it doesn't mean he's the savior! That is way too big of a burden to put on a rookie, any rookie.
He's actually been quite respectable as a starting QB this season... not just among rookie QBs, but all QBs. There were a few bad weeks in there when Clueless Hue inserted himself into the offense but what can you really expect with him involved. That guy messes up everything he gets his hands on.
Look at how much better Baker has looked the last 2-3 weeks. It's not just Baker - other guys have stepped up too. The protection is better. Receivers are dropping less balls, and have made some excellent plays (thinking the Njoku circus touchdown, and Chubb's catch against the opponent's helmet.)
Let Dorsey do his thing. The Browns have extra picks next year, and the most cap space in the league. There's plenty there to work with to upgrade offensive tackle, receiver, depth, etc. Let's put the best supporting cast around Baker that we can.
I'd be ok with a mid-late round pick on a QB, somebody that can be developed and can take over and win 2 out of 4 games if Mayfield gets injured, or something along those lines. Don't use the premium 1st/2nd round picks though, not this early, when he has shown so much promise. Let the guy develop as a leader without another first round pick looking over his shoulder.
If worst comes to worst and Baker doesn't pan out in the long run, that's something that can be addressed when it's appropriate. An early pick is the best chance to get a top QB but there are many teams that got their QBs later in the draft or in free agency.
If they drafted a QB in the first round next year, if I were Mayfield, may first automatic response would be "trade me now." I'd probably be more dumbfounded than anything. Is this some sort of a gotcha or joke? It has to be, just has to be.
Thats the response you would expect from a LOSER
Winners don't shy from competition, they EMBRACE IT
Did Troy Aikman ask for a trade when Dallas used a 1st rd pick of Steve Walsh? Nope
did Drew Brees ask for a trade when the Chargers took Phillip Rivers in the 1st rd? Nope
Did Bret Farve ask for a trade when the Packers drafted Rodgers? Nope
Any guy that would feel threatened by competition is not a guy I want on my roster...If Mayfield is as great as he thinks and says he is, he will have no problem with another QB from any round even the 1st being brought in.
Im not sold on Mayfield, no one should be. He has won 3 NFL games, thats it. that is far from being a franchise QB. All this talk of him being a franchise Qb is immature kneejerking, all he has proven is he has won 3 games...lots of backups and out of the league QB have won 3 games....we won't know the full answer on Mayfield till he has played 30 games, until then, if you pick in the Top 3 and a Qb is there, take him and don't think twice about it...its up to Mayfield to prove he is the guy, not for us to coddle to his desire.
the Browns don't work for Baker Mayfield, Baker Mayfield works for the Browns, if the Browns have a chance to continue to improve their roster by taking a QB (since the postion is still in question) we wouldn't be doing our due dilligence.
Like Alonzo highsmith said: "Everyone has a plan till they get punched in the mouth" Lets punch Baker in the mouth by drafting a 1st rd QB, lets see how he responds to such adversity and competition, will he get better like Aikman, Brees, and even Farve did, or will he crumble?
You just refuse to give up on a losing proposition don't you?
Some people will never admit they're wrong.
We will see in 3 years if im wrong. won't we?
im willing to give Baker 2 more years after this year before I label him one way or the other, thats much more then most.
there is nothing wrong with developing another high pick Qb during the next 2-3 years, just in case something happens with Baker(either he don't work out, or has some really bad injury) We have plenty of Fa money and extra picks to fill most of our others holes in the draft in the other rounds.
If Baker does work out, we can trade 2019 1st Rd Qb for a 1st rd pick + more picks most likely which = adding even more talent to our roster. Doing this is just as much investing money into a bond with a 2-1 return as it is an insurance policy.
The Cowboys used a 1st rd pick on Walsh, and later traded him for a 1st and a 3rd rder a year later, We could do something similar.
However, its important to remember...if we continue winning games, we won't be in position to take a high Qb anyways, we had a much worse record when this thread started so this could all end up being moot depending where we end up at in the draft anyways
Anyways im done with this thread now until we see where we will even be drafting...we may not even be in a spot to take another Qb anyways so it would be moot and not matter.
I will say though to Baker's credit, his play is slowly growing on me, but im not going to get too excited yet...been burned too many times. If he can play this way all though next year, then he will win me over, till then, im still in wait and see mode.
Cowboys took Walsh in the supplemental draft with their 1st pick.
He is also the 42nd worst quarterback - according to this site (Complex Sports) in NFL history.
Years: 1989-1999 Teams: Dallas Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, St. Louis Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Indianapolis Colts Drafted: 1st round, 1st overall (1989) Supplemental draft Career Games Started: 38
Cowboy fans figured the addition of Steve Walsh would be a match made in heaven, joining his old coach Jimmy Johnson from the U in the 1989 supplemental draft. The relationship would never blossom—consider yourself lucky Cowboy fans—the Cowboys stuck with Troy Aikman and Walsh was traded away to the Saints. Walsh would later move on to the Bears, Cardinals, Buccaneers and Colts before retiring with 40 touchdowns and 50 interceptions.
"Getting drafted by Dallas, Steve Walsh controversy Jerry Jones bought the team in 1989 and fired the legendary Tom Landry. When Aikman learned that Jones planned to hire Jimmy Johnson, he admitted laughing at the possibility of playing for a coach he had turned down twice in the recruiting process while in college. "I remember laughing about it thinking, 'I've turned Jimmy down twice. If this happens and he becomes the head coach, God I hope he doesn't turn me down this third time." Obviously he didn't, since Dallas made Aikman the No. 1 overall pick of the 1989 draft. But that things took a worrisome turn when Jones told Aikman that the Cowboys would be drafting Washington State quarterback Timm Rosenbach in the supplemental draft. Dallas ended up picking Steve Walsh, who had won a national championship with Johnson at Miami. "It was really bizarre," Aikman said. "I didn't know what exactly that meant." In the film, Johnson says he drafted Walsh with the hope of trading him. But he didn't want to downplay Walsh not being a starter because it would hurt his trade value. Aikman said Johnson not sticking by his side early on hurt their relationship. "It impacted me being an ally for Jimmy very early on in my career. He already had a relationship with Steve because they went back to college. I had no relationship with Jimmy. I had turned him down twice already. So it created a little bit of a friction between us that took a few years to overcome."
Like Alonzo Highsmith said: "Everyone has a plan 'til they get punched in the mouth.".
I believe that is actually a Mike Tyson quote. Credos from room-temperature IQ individuals should probably not be employed as one of your organization's guiding principles.

LOL. Listen to what you're saying... if the Browns don't draft a QB in the first round that means they have anointed him the savior?? Furthermore, you would advocate using a top 3 pick on another QB? Wow. And this is the best - because he hasn't:
Won multiple Division Titles Won multiple playoff games Had multiple seasons above .500 Won 30 games as a pro
You understand that by that logic most NFL teams would have about 5 first round QBs on their roster?
Hope a bunch of them can fill in at LB lmao.
Can't expect a QB to have a "resume" after a handful of games bro. I could nitpick a bunch of things he's done wrong OR I can compare that to what I see from most rookie QBs. Mayfield is waaay ahead of the curve.
I understand the premise of what you said at the beginning of the thread. I understand the "Battered Browns Syndrome" that may lead others to feel the same way. There is a lot of truth to "can't win without a QB" but there are 50+ other men on a team. You can't win a championship with inferior talent regardless of QB. That's not putting the cart ahead of the horse, that's realizing the horse can't carry a load when there is no cart.
If they drafted a QB in the first round next year, if I were Mayfield, may first automatic response would be "trade me now." I'd probably be more dumbfounded than anything. Is this some sort of a gotcha or joke? It has to be, just has to be.

This thread is in the Peyton Hillis and a ham sandwich category...
No, the Browns will absolutely not be drafting a QB this year, and with a bit of luck, for 10 to 15 years.
The Browns have doubled up their victories.... 3 is now 6 and the push is for 8 and a WINNING SEASON!
Mayfield is the QB for the future, and you need to get used to WINNING some games....
Totally agree. But I would draft a mid / late round guy to develop as a back up. I assume Taylor will be gone which leaves us with Stanton. Stanton is fine as a back up but I would like to see another development guy. And then if we catch lightning in a bottle, we got a trade piece down the line (see Garoppolo). Do we have a QB on the practice squad?
I'm perfectly fine with a mid/late round guy to develop as a backup. In fact, I think it's a great idea. Taylor surely won't be back next season, and it would be preferable to have a backup with a similar playstyle to Mayfield anyway.
It's not the biggest deal, but you don't really want to have to change the offense around because the backup has to come in for a couple games.. or series.
I was going to say that I see no problem with using a mid/late round pick to add a developmental QB. Bringing back Brogan saves a draft pick, as long as he develops.
Injuries happen, and having a reliable backup is important. The Pats have a long established pattern of drafting B/U QBs, keeping them for 3-4 years, then replacing them when they go into FA. Most have gone on to be starters on other teams. They have been able to do this because of Brady. Hopefully, we are now in that situation.
Taylor is most likely gone after this season. Stanton is more of a coach than player. I don't really see him moving back into dressing every game
