This is not a football thread. The guy is playing well. Much better than I ever imagined.
This thread is about Baker, the person. I hope to not get into the back-and-forth w/certain posters and make it more about us board members rather than Baker, but sometimes I slip.
Before I rip into him, I want to make this clear. I am NOT asking anyone to agree w/me. I don't care if people disagree. That's fine. I am simply expressing my opinion of his character.
I get the feeling that Baker Mayfield is not a very good person. I get the feeling he is an arrogant, vindictive, jerk. I also get the feeling he is fake.
I have many examples of why I feel this way, but I want to start by just sharing a few.
I had no problem w/him holding Hue off after the game. He doesn't like Hue. No big deal. I would not have handled it that way, but I get it.
I did have a problem w/Baker talking about it in the PC. He said something about Hue being in the Brown's locker room and then going to Cinci, who is a divisional rival. Baker forgot to mention that Hue was fired. Hue didn't abandon Cleveland for Cinci. He was FIRED!!!! And I bet Baker had a say in that, too.
The local media and many fans applauded this classless move, but others did not. Damien Woody, a Super Bowl champion, said that Baker needs to "grow up." And he brought up how Baker left Texas Tech for Oklahoma.
Baker felt the need to respond to that and said something about he wasn't offered a scholarship. Hmmmmmm???? Does that mean he was "kicked off the team or not?" Hue was "fired." Meaning, he was no longer allowed to be w/the team.
But, Baker could not stop there and called Hue "fake." Seriously dude? You are a rookie in the NFL and you are repeatedly bad-mouthing your former HC and you then demean his character. And this comes after you had this PC in college. [btw....read the comments. I am not alone in thinking he was "fake."
I have more, such as what went down at Texas Tech w/Baker and his dad causing problems for his coach, but those articles have already been posted on here.
I have to say that while Baker is playing good football, I am having a hard time rooting for him. He comes across as a freaking .....!
There is evidence and reason to believe he's arrogant, vindictive, etc ... I can't dispute that.
There is also evidence that Big Ben is the same way (I think all successful QBs have some sort of ego that we all don't see)
Baker is very open when it comes to himself ... and I'm not a huge fan of it, but he's not going to change.
It's all about results. If he plays well, he's the golden child and it will perpetuate itself. If he doesn't? We'll see
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Cooper is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Moore is flanked out wide to the right. Chubb and Ford are split in the backfield as Watson takes the snap ... Here we go."
I get the feeling he is an arrogant, vindictive, jerk. I also get the feeling he is fake.
describes Aaron rodgers to a T.
and with his comments about Hue....i mean so what? man we talk all the time on the boards about how we wish players would take division rivalries seriously.
well Baker did exactly that. he views Hue, who now works for the ENEMY, as a snake.
oh well, imma roll with that too. no love lost for the enemy. thats all Baker is doing.
and also, i'd feel some type of way too with that fake ass crap with "hey baker, i want to let you know you won the backup job!!" that was nothing more than posturing for Hard knocks. Hue even admitted on Undisputed he wanted that one back.
Baker is the kind of guy that plays with a chip on his shoulder, and always like he needs something to prove. if a coach who got fired then went to our divisional rival fuels that fire, then so be it. im with baker 100%.

I think your love for Hue has totally ruined your ability to enjoy the success the Browns are having now. Hue now works for a hated division rival. Baker Mayfield is the qb of the team we love and most of us have been following since childhood. No one knows what went on between the two, and we may not agree with the way Baker handled it. But to call the qb of our team an arrogant, vindictive jerk while not saying a word about Hue's excuse tour shows just where your priorities lie.

I get that guys like you and arch want to turn it into something it's not because that is the kind of guys you are.
That's fine.
I'm done now. I said what I wanted to say and you guys can turn it into something it was never intended to be. But, I knew it was coming and I'm okay w/it. Have at it.
Didn't Baker leave TT for Oklahoma after he didn't get a scholarship?
Did Baker's interview when he was crying look sincere to you?
Did Damien Woody play in the NFL or not?
Did Damien Woody win Super Bowls?
Have other college coaches ripped Baker and his dad for their arrogant behavior at TT or not?
Was Baker run out of a bar in Ludwig for his poor behavior or not?
Did Baker grab his junk or not during a game?
Did other players not want to shake his hand or not?
Did Baker try and run from the police or not?
Did Baker throw his coach under the bus or not?
I can go on, but you missed a lot.
So, let me summarize all of that.
You loved a coach that went ..........what was his record again?
You are ticked, being a so called Browns fan, about Hue, your buddy, being fired, and the TEAM playing much better since he was fired.
And, you can't tolerate that Baker is doing a decent job with Hue out of the picture, so you attack Baker as a person in some stupid ass attempt to redeem yourself?
You came on here, a Cleveland Browns Message Board, and called Baker an arrogant, vindictive jerk...but didn't want a personal reaction from Cleveland Brown's fans?

Well, kudos to you, because it was NOT a football post. It was 100% a "Dammit, I was wrong about hue and now I'm going to attack the best qb this team has had in years" post. In a stupid attempt to give yourself some semblance of legitimacy.
come on bro. i think Vers is just worried that Baker could be talking a bit too much, and he has a history of that. we have to remember, he is still a rookie QB, and we're still only 4-6.
right now it could be culture shock from some. bro, i LOVE bakers attitude. im glad he isn't just another cookie cutter, toe the company line kind of dude.
for some other people, its just not their cup of tea. i love bakers fire, but there is a real concern that you hope that fire doesn't end up making the whole team go up in flames.

...if that were the case, "arrogant, vindictive jerk" is a bit strong, don't you think? I mentioned in another post that Baker could be painting a bullseye on himself.

it is, but you have to remember Vers never wanted baker in the first place.
so thats a barrier already fortified.

I don't want to comment on what kind of person Baker Mayfield is, because quite frankly, I have no idea.
I know he had some trouble in college, but I don't think that should be held against him.
What we do know, is that he seems to be one hell of a teammate. He is someone you'd rather have on your side, than someone you have to go up against. If you go back and see some of the comments from other guys on the Browns, right around the Jets game, you can tell they wanted Baker on the field, maybe even sooner than the Jets game, and that's factoring in that Tyrod Taylor is well respected around the league. The fact that a rookie was able to galvanize an entire team like that speaks volumes.
He's also brash. I actually don't think he's "fake" because quite frankly there are a lot of "fake" people in the NFL, who have to act that way because they're worried about their next gig. Baker Mayfield is brash, and honest. It was refreshing to see his comments about Hue Jackson. Not just because Jackson was a fraud, and a bit of a d-bag, but also because it was nice to see a pro athelete actually speak his mind. The media complains about these guys being robotic, but when they have an honest moment, they rip him, because he's not acting the way they want him to?
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, especially on a message board involving a sports team, but I'd be careful saying he's not a "good person". Reuben Foster is not a good person. Ben Roethlisburger is not a good person.
Is he a d-bag? Yeah kinda. If he played for the Bengals or Ravens, Steelers, we'd HATE him.
I think he should have kept his thoughts about Hue to himself. It got worse when he doubled down on Twitter, and I didn't like his brudder running his mouth yesterday on social media, either.
Right now, I don't really much care. I'm glad he has a chip on his shoulder, plus his teammates back him up, they are on board with Bake.
As long as he doesn't break any serious laws, and keeps balling out, to be honest vers I don't care that much.
I think Baker could have handled it better, but I also see where he is coming from. Hue went on a media tour as soon as he was fired to bash the other coaches, and even the players to an extent. He then takes a job with a division rival who we still play 2 more times.
I don't fault Hue for taking a job, but when was the last time a HC was fired midseason and took a job a week or 2 later? It doesn't happen, ever.
I think Baker took offense to the talk towards the team and spouted off a bit. Seeing Randall "show up" Hue too, it's obvious Baker wasn't the only one who felt that way.
I feel like some of this is built out of Bake needing to create some bulletin board material.
He has it out for Hue because Hue handled the QB situation poorly. And so you see it getting played out because it's fuel to win.
Baker's smart. And what you do as a competitor... especially one who is trying to change a culture is that you manufacture villains. You need to have someone to stick it to. Hue is certainly that target this week.
In addition it's fuel for the rest of the season... the last game he plays is against the Bengals...
I remember when he came out... Marty really loved his attitude... Others.. not so much.
In the end competitors come in different flavors. From the quiet Assasin to the loudmouth put up or shut up... Think Phil “aw shucks” Michelson or Mohammad Ali.
I like some better than other. Neither is better than the other.
JC: Personally, I don't like what Baker said at the Press Conference. I don't like the back and forth he's been had with people since the Press Conference too.
But, when we drafted him, we knew that he was going to go about this his own way. He's always marched to his own drummer, per say. No reason to think that he would do any different.
I can understand why Baker's upset. I can understand why Hue went to Cincy the way he did too. I guess I chalk it up to two different perspectives. One seeing his coach go to a divisional opponent who we're set to play twice this year (and game planning against the team he was the leader of). The other just trying to stay relevant in the NFL and getting a job offer to help him do just that.
But I don't think we need to make this bigger than it needs to be. I think this is just a Baker moment.
No huge harm. He is who he is. He doesn't hide it either. He's seems to be quite an upfront person. As long as he continues to prepare properly every week, continues to have the team behind him, and continues to kick butt. What's there really to complain about?
The guy looks to be the real deal. He seems to be getting the NFL. And he's showing he has the talent to back it up. So far, he's everything I hoped for when we drafted him
Bakes very inmature in a lot of ways ... this is just another manifestation of it ... he had made his point in a hard but acceptable way IMO ... then he had to re-act to this ... there was no need for it ...
Sometimes things don’t need to be said ... this was 100% one of those time IMO ...
I’d call this an UNPROVOKED version of his crotch grab at the other teams bench last year ... childish and uncalled for ...

Seriously ????
John 3:16 Jesus said "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
I don't care what those guys say about me. I said it because that is how I feel. I didn't make anything up. I didn't lie. I brought up things that happened in college and now in the pros.
I simply don't like the guy. And again, I am not asking others to not like him. It's fine if people approve of that type of behavior. I'm just saying I don't.
Alot of interesting points. Some I agree with or at least concern myself with.
I don't see the equivalence of bakers transfer and Hue though. Baker made no money on the transfer. Hue is making 4.75 million this year alone from the Browns. I also think Baker going all in on the rivalry means he takes them seriously . In time we could have a QB that wants to put the screws to pit, bal, and cin. We may already be there.
If Baker can back up his talk then there's nothing to complain about. If his mouth outruns his arm talent then people will see it and tune out. Simple as that.
That's a fair post. I don't agree w/the point about going to Cinci vs going to Oklahoma because I think a person has the right to seek employment after being fired. Thus, I don't think that equates to "bailing" or "selling out." Heck, I don't even blame Baker for going to Oklahoma. I just thought he was wrong for bashing a man for finding another job. But again, we simply have a difference of opinion on that and I appreciate you making a post that wasn't full of insults.
