In Dayton, we have Time Warner ( ) and from what I can make out from their website, digital cable is $54 a month plus a converter box (at $9) and remote. If you want the HD tier (something like 5 channels) it's another $9 a month. Then a sports tier for $5 a month. That would be almost $90 (tax included) for the HD stuff...no movie channels included in this workup. Does that seem right?

Jeez thats sum crap. That doesn't sound right but with TW anything is possible I just switched to Direct TV and I get the choice pkg for $34.99 and a HD box for $10 a month. That includes a bunch of HD stuff, no movie channels but I get HBO/Cinemax and SHO/TMC for free for 3 months and then each movie channel is $7 or something like that a month. But I get a bunch of HD Channels included.

I'm going to call them tomorrow to see if that amount is correct. If it is, they can forget it. Now....how does one know if they have a dead pixel on their tv? I have a black not far from the middle of screen and it's not dust. Do bad pixels happen over time, or would this be the only one I ever see?

Michelle, It sounds like your adding each item together, usually they have certain packages at lower rates then what each individual item added together would cost. I have TW here and i pay $120 a month for digital cable, 3 boxes, high speed internet, and all the movie channels (HBO, MAX, SHOW, Encore, Starz). The only thing i don't get that they offer is the HD package, which is like 5 to 7 channels, and the foreign stations they offer.

Your getting off cheap. My comcast is 180 bucks a month with the digital, HD (we get 10 hd channels) HBO, Skinomax, Showtime, Movie channel, and Encore, with two dvr boxes and high speed internet.

Michelle, I have TW (and yes they do suck). IF YOU ALREADY HAVE DIGITAL CABLE, you are paying $7 for the current box. I just got upgraded with their HD/DVR box and it is only adding $2 a month. I get all the Cleveland local HD channels (3,5,8,19,25,43) as well as ESPN, ESPN2, Discovery Theater, and a few others without going to that "HD tier" they have. If I want those extra 5 or so additional channels you talked about, then it is an additional cost. I'm considering going to DirectTV once I see what HD content they are going to have this October. From TW website: http://www.timewarnercable.com/corporate/products/digitalcable/hdtv.html.... No expensive equipment to buy - unlike satellite, you don't need an expensive receiver or dish. Just upgrade to a new digital HD-enabled set-top box. There's no extra cost because you're a Time Warner Cable Digital Cable customer. We'll install it for you - with our hassle-free professional installation, you don't have to install any bulky equipment on your roof. Everything you need is in our digital HD set-top box.

Wow, thats friken expensive. If HD is what u really are after seriously check into a dish. I get something like 400 channels and I get about 10-15 or so now in HD and about 70 in HD in a month or so. It has only gone out on me once and thats when it was storming real bad and hailing. AT&T has this deal now where you can get phone/DSL/Digital Cable thru them for $99 a month. I didn't know about it till after I got my direct TV but the people I know that has it loves it. I have DSL thru them at the same speed at TW for less money ($24.99). I just have a phone line strictly for the DSL and set up a wireless network. What you pay is friken robbery man. If you call them and say "Hey I found blah blah thru AT&T they will drop your rate,,guaranteed. TW did all they could to save me and I led them on b/c I knew I couldn't get them in my new development. For whatever reason the company that runs it has their own cable. It sucks too so Dish was the way to do. Plus if anyone does get direct TV and said that jerk 337 refered them we both get $50 taken off our bills,,woo! Fiddy Bucks!

That $90 / month sounds about right, unfortunately. I'm paying over a $100 for Digital TV on 2 TV's (one being HD/DVR), and 2 movie stations. That's why I'm thinking about going D-TV and getting an HD antenna for local stations for those occasions the weather knocks out the dish and I want to know where that tornado is!!
I'm about ready to "disable the cable".

Thats a good idea actually (the antenna) Has anyone bought a HD antenna? How does it work?
You won't be disappointed Rogue with it. I was nervous about getting a dish b/c of some of the stories I heard but I am very happy with it. When I bought a HDTV I couldn't wait to check it out and the picture is friken amazig. I have the HD box in the living room and the regular box in the bedroom. They installed everything and I got the boxes free. Plus they gave me a free portable DVD player hehe. I do have to pay $10 a month extra for the HD box though but thats OK.

I was having trouble with my cable internet, had a guy out that finally listened to me, and took my advice to replace the line from the junction box to the house, and presto, problems are gone (after 2 years and many service calls and half days off work waiting for a tech who wouldn't listen to me) Anyway, that was 2 weeks ago, and I had NFL network with digital service. The very next day, my NFL network is gone, and I call them, it's now 4.95 extra for a sports package with NFL network. I pay 44.00 for Digital Cable and HD, + sports package, + HBO, On-Demand, and a HD DVR. We get cable plus, and HBO as part of our association contract. That's why I don't switch to Direct TV, can't pass up $50-60 of free cable every month (well it;s not free, I pay in my association fees, but I pay them whether I use the cable or not, so I might as well us it.)

I have TW. It's an all in one package that includes Internet Phone and cable. I have 2 digital boxes an HD DVR and I get every movie channel available. It all cost me $150 a month.

I thought about the all in one deals, but as it stands I pay around $120 for DSL, regular cable, and phone.
I guess digital cable is worth these crazy amounts some of you are paying fo it?? What makes it so great?

For me it's not so much the digital as it is the HD. My wife likes the On Demand channels that digital offers.

The digital channels are a little clearer than the standard analog ones, and you egt On Demand which comes in handy at times. I just wish they had more network shows on On Demand, but the PPV On Demand movie selection is nice. I've actually thought about canceling netflix because of it.

Just called TW...the guy was less than helpful, really. Basically $60 per month includes one converter box. Additional boxes are $8 per month. What a ripoff. The digital cable is already running through the line and they charge you more for it. I guess I can look at it as paying for a box at $8 and getting cable for $52. Cable is a rip-off. Sure wish we had choices in Dayton.
I was looking in the Chillicothe area at cable choices and they have two options. TW is less expensive there. Go figure.

If I had a good antenna to pull in local stations, I might consider it. I don't want to mount one on the roof, though. And...the dishes don't show the Reds. Of course, we won't see them in Chillicothe anyway.

Michelle, I think that has to do with TW buying out Adelphia since i believe Chilli was where Adelphia's home office was plus what channels are available in what areas.

Right...TW bought Adelphia. Still seems about $10 cheaper there than here. I just figured it was due to the fact that they have competition.

You'll have to compare what channels they offer there to yours to find out if its actually cheaper or just less channels.

Hi Michelle, If you haven't done anything yet, you may want to bargain with them.
There was an article sometime ago on newsnet5.com I believe that had a form letter you could read from when you call them.
I went from Time Warner to Dish, then back to Time Warner. It seems like these companies like to take care of new customers more than existing customers.
Dish Network wanted me to purchase an expensive HD box when I bought my new TV, plus pay for the HD programming and DVR. Time Warner offered me digital cable, two boxes, HD channels (local plus ESPN and Discovery), DVR, and Road Runner Internet for less than $100. Another thing to keep in mind is that they send out flyers with promotions occasionally.
I just also remembered that I think the letter on newsnet5.com was so that you could renegotiate your rate if you are an existing customer. If I can find the article, I'll post it.

Why wouldn't you want to mount one on the roof? They're like a foot and a half across and they install it for you. You can sign up for the baseball package and get all the MLB games you want for the year.

I didn't mean the Dish...I meant an antenna. Besides, we don't need to be messing with adding things to the house right now when we're getting it ready to show.

An HD antenna can sit right on top of the TV or nearby. They run about $40-$60. You would just use a different input on the TV for its use if the DTV Sat signal gets whacked by a storm. Since the signal is digital, its not like the "bad old days" of snowy pictures. You either get the local signal or you don't. If you get it, then you get HD picture.
http://www.amazon.com/Zenith-ZHDTV1-HDTV-UHF-Digital-Antenna/dp/B00006FXR9

Edit: I'm not endorsing this particular antenna in any way. Never tried this one. Just using it as an example.

I believe you can set up 4 TV's for free. I have a HD box and a regular and they didn't cost me anything. Just $10 a month for HD access.

Yep - I believe you get 4 receivers FREE with new account (among other things). For those with more TVs - no worries - just move the box to another room. Their standard box (no HD and no DVR) is small and easily portable. Just have the wiring there and accessible, and you should have no problem turning a few connectors. If you need more boxes (because you have so many TVs), I'm sure you could handle the $4.99 a month charge per box.
