http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=159118Browns lose another: Jackson has surgery Posted: December 14, 2006 Associated Press BEREA, Ohio -- Cleveland rookie inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson will have surgery on his toe and will likely miss the Browns' final three games, another bad break for the luckless club. Jackson is suffering from "turf toe," a relatively common injury that can heal with rest. He got hurt last week against Pittsburgh. However, Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Jackson and the team elected to have an operation and the 23-year-old was scheduled for surgery Thursday. Crennel only ruled Jackson out of this Sunday's game at Baltimore, but it's doubtful he would play in Cleveland's last two games. "There are two small bones underneath his big toe," Crennel said. "One of them got pulled away a little bit. If you give it time, it will heal, but some say that it's fixable now. We decided to have it fixed." Jackson, a second-round pick from Maryland, started all 13 games for the Browns and has 115 tackles. He has recorded double-digit tackles in each of the past three games and Crennel has been pleased with the steady improvement. "I thought he did a good job this year overall starting right away," Crennel said. "He played just about every down on first and second down for us. He was able to hold his own. At times, he struggled with some of the bigger guys, but his instincts allowed him to get around some of the blocks. "He was productive as far as making tackles and he was good in pass coverage. Overall, I thought he had a pretty good year." Crennel said the team has not yet decided whether to place Jackson on injured reserve. Rookie Leon Williams, a fourth-round pick, is expected to start in Jackson's place against the Ravens. The Browns have been plagued by major medical setbacks since training camp, when free agent center LeCharles Bentley torn a knee ligament on the first full-contact play. Cleveland is also missing starting cornerback Gary Baxter (two torn knee ligaments), defensive end Orpheus Roye (sprained knee), safety Brian Russell (staph infection) and right tackle Ryan Tucker (mental disorder). All four are on injured reserve. Meanwhile, quarterback Charlie Frye didn't throw any passes during the portion of practice open to the media. The second-year QB bruised his right wrist two weeks ago and sat out last week's loss at Pittsburgh. "It's still sore," Frye said before practice. "It's tough to throw and if you can't throw, you can't play." If Frye can't play, Derek Anderson, who made his first career start last week, will face the Ravens. Anderson was released by Baltimore before last season. Copyright 2006 Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

As unfortunate as it always is, yes. I just can't imagine out how much worse our luck can get,....just gotta hope now he has a full, complete recovery---assume that that's part of the "Do It Now" decision, huh ?

assume that that's part of the "Do It Now" decision, huh ? If they let it heal on it's own, something would screw up and he would need surgery in March. Then with the staph after that, it might knock him out of the entire 07 season.

That has got to be a locker room problem, or every patient at The Cleveland Clinic would have it too ????? I mentioned in another thread, that we need to take a long look at our medical staff. Think about this... Most if not all of our players get hurt right? true true your saying, i know . Ever sinec 1999 everyone gets hurt, I won't list them because you know if you post, on this board I know you know, because even the worst poster knows and has discussed football to even find his way here. What about prevention? All teams get hurt, but I have been thinking about it. I am NOT saying anything about the cleveland clinic, God knows they saved my life, and that is a fact. But the people on the scene, our strenght and conditioning coaches etc... I mean isn't it worth a look see? I may be way off base and that is fine if I am...it's just a thought I had.

[color:"orange"]I knew with 3 games left and a long healing injury like turf toe that DQ probably would be next for the IR.
I didn't know it would come to surgery...Turf Toe is a bad injury...worse than people think. I hope he come back 100% thats all.
Expect many injuries from here on in to put guys on IR.

J/C, this sucks, for the D and the Browns in general but it's better to deal with it now and get healed than to wait and possibly make it worse.
We will get to see much more of Leon Williams, don't know if that's a good thing or not??? We'll see! I agree that something needs to be done in order for these guys to stay healthy, hell at the injury rate we're going at we will need to rebuild the whole team due to injuries....

For Chrissakes, I don't know how much more we can do...
We have the services of the Cleve Clinic, and one of the best Strentgh/conditioning coaches in the league. When Lott came here, other fans were bummed... he's supposed to be one of the very best in the league.
WTF is up with us and injuries?

Hey, at least we got to see what this kid can do. Hopefully the surgery works out, he heals 100%, and our LB crew is that much better and that much more experienced next year.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

Not to be your pimp or steal any thunder, but I too have implied this same "allegation" on the board before,...and you have to trust in the organizatiion that they have at least taken a look at it, but I have no proof of that either.

If I were one of these guys, there's no way in hell I would trust the Cleveland Clinic (atleast right now) to get it right. It seems like anyone they touch gets a staph infection. Someone needs to tell DQ to head down to Maryland and let the terp medical staff take care of him. Honestly, it's not all that bad he'll be out. We already know what DQ can do. He proved he's a viable long term core player and he's probably better served to not take the pounding of the next 3 games. Get the toe healed, recover and be ready to go for spring ball.......we'll also get a great looks at Leon these next 3 games......hopefully he can emerge as a guy who can challege for an OLB spot next season.

I was thinking the same thing about the blessing in disguise of getting to see what Leon can do... Is he projected as an OLB? Does he have the speed and pass rush to play OLB in the 3-4?

Hats off to DQ. In the midst of a dismal season for the Browns, he has done some good things and will only improve in future years.
I'm anxious to see what Leon and Travis Wilson and any other young guns the Browns want to trot out these last three games can do. Be great to see them win a few games.

I don't know the answer to this question but I would like to know also. Maybe he could be molded to replace WM when he retires.

He ran a 4.58 at the combine, which is pretty damn fast for a guy that is 245 LBS.......just as a measuring stick, A.J. Hawk ran a 4.61. That was kind of eye opening for me when I looked it up. I would definitely say he has the raw speed........as for his pass rushing ability, I have absolutely no idea. He's a projected inside backer but I think he has the skills/size/speed to potentially play outside.

No he's more of a ILB ...that was his position at Miami. I thought it's a bit odd that Rac moved Davis to the weak side instead of putting Williams there. But I guess to answer my own question Leon has played the Mike spot when he gets in.

Anyone else seem to think that all of this means that Chaun Thompson has become the Jeff Faine of this year's draft?! Perhaps a day 1 trade to a team with a 4-3 to move up and grab another potential player in next years draft?!
That's what I think Savage is trying to find out.
And the next head coach is ......

I feel bad for the people in this area. Everyone (including his parents btw) was really looking forward to seeing him play against Tampa Bay. Right now I'm back at my parents house for Christmas break which is in....you guessed it, Largo, DQ's hometown. Just about everyone was anxious to see him play against Tampa since it would be on local TV here.

[color:"orange"]Everyone is getting injuries...just a lucky few escape the big list...usually a variable for a SB year is escaping the injury bug.
We are in the norm...sometimes our bad luck is the who - Bentley our first major coup stud OL FA Pro-Bowl...crap like that smacks us to no end
But dare I say...Lets look at the positive side of this. It happened now and he is getting surgery.
This means REHAB and pretty much means he will be living at Berea in the off season working one on one with Lott and our Rehab guy (forgot his name) they did a great job with KW2 and BE better than anywhere. Well I can see DQ spending the off season working like a mad man rehabbing and getting...BIGGER and FASTER. It will not surprise me one bit to see him teetering 238-240 and not losing a step...possibly gaining one as he shows up to our camps.
Remember this in May ok sometimes things happen to us and look bleak...but turn out actually OK. He got his learning in - I don't wish injury on anyone but it happened. Now he is committed to rehab with our great staff. JMHOptimistic look

CLEVELAND (Ticker) - The Cleveland Browns on Friday placed rookie inside linebacker D'Qwell Jackson on injured reserve with turf toe. Cleveland's second-round draft pick, Jackson suffered the injury in last week's 27-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Jackson, 23, started in all 13 of the Browns' games this season and recorded 93 tackles, the second-highest total on the team. The rookie had four games with at least 10 tackles. web page

Would I be wrong for hoping he returns to Maryland and has the procedure done at Johns Hopkins? I assure you that they don't have any less incidents of staph infections than any other hospital. Every year about a half a million people will get a staph infection after being in the hospital. Somewhere around 30% of the healthy population walk around with this bacteria on there skin or in their nose. It's when it gets into a wound, etc., that it becomes a big problem. Obviously, you see with that many people carrying it around how difficult it is to combat.
