Browns join Dolphins, Lions in pursuing QB Green

CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Browns seem to be beating the bushes for a veteran quarterback, after all.

Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images

Coupled with Daunte Culpepper's unsure future, Cleo Lemon and Gibran Hamdan have done nothing to dissuade the Dolphins from going hard after the veteran Green.

General manager Phil Savage confirmed Thursday night that that he contacted Kansas City GM Carl Peterson about Trent Green, a two-time Pro Bowl quarterback, during this week's NFL meetings in Phoenix.

"I spoke to a number of teams/GMs about players/picks including KC," Savage said in an e-mail. "Bottom line, due diligence on a player who might be able to help us -- nothing imminent or on the table."

Savage reiterated that he "did the same thing" with other teams. However, the fact that he would even approach another team about a proven QB is an interesting development for the Browns, who own the No. 3 overall pick in next month's draft.

Savage had said previously that the team would be willing to go into training camp next summer without a veteran and allow Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson to compete for the starting job.

There's also the possibility the Browns could wind up taking either LSU's JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn if things fell into place in the first round.

On Wednesday, Peterson told The Kansas City Star that Savage approached him at the conclusion of the meetings about Green, whom the Chiefs are looking to trade if they can't restructure his contract.

"We agreed to talk some more later this week or the first of next week," Peterson told the newspaper. "He said he wants to talk some more with his head coach and his offensive coordinator.

"But he did ask whether this thing was over with. I said, 'No, not at all.' Cleveland would make sense to me because Trent played very well against them last year."

Green, who last season missed eight games after sustaining a severe concussion on a hard hit in the season opener, threw a season-high four touchdown passes in a loss at Cleveland on Dec. 3.

Miami and Detroit are also reportedly interested in Green, who is signed through 2009. He is slated to make $7.2 million next season, and $7.7 million and $9.2 million in the final two years of his contract.

Green struggled after returning from his concussion, throwing seven touchdowns and nine interceptions as Kansas City went 2-3 in its final five games. Green's 74.1 passer rating was his lowest since 2001 -- his first year with the Chiefs.

Damon Huard, who filled in when Green was sidelined last season, recently signed a three-year deal with the Chiefs. Kansas City also has Brodie Croyle, last year's third-round draft pick.

The only reason I can think of for your love of Frye is that you are related or a member of a Frye cult which Mesa is your spirtual leader!

Yea you really don't understand because it's nothing to do with MAC QB's and everything to do with the MAC and being a very weak football conference. And a QB drafted in the 3rd round out of a weak conference does not give me goose bumps as it seems to give you!

The "weak conference" argument is ridiculous except in that a high-talent prospect isn't as likely to go to one of those schools; but is more likely to get and accept a sholarship to a football-factory.

It's the player, not the school... the school just buys the player exposure, affording him a greater opportunity to showcase his abilities.

And all of you are on crack.... whomever the QB is, that is going to be the least of our concerns for this year in regards to whether or not we go anywhere. Little things like OLine, Jamal Lewis, the DLine, the stone-hands WR's will all be FAR MORE determinant of our success than a single guy on offense.

Browns is the Browns

I see where you are going with your argument but all too often, people discount the final piece in your equation which includes a QB that can march his team down the field and score points...

Frye has just had WAY too many meltdowns in the RZ in his career to make me agree with the company line of thinking which you seem to follow...

Unlike Corpus, I think it has NOTHING to do with his College FB conference and EVERYTHING to do with his skill set and phsyche... He just hasn't proven he can cut it and until he does on a consistent basis, I will count the weeks until Quinn can come in and start his development...

Again Corpus, just simple media rumors. Even in the article they state:

Quote:

Savage had said previously that the team would be willing to go into training camp next summer without a veteran and allow Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson to compete for the starting job.

So though they approached KC, it was simply about what is what. It wasn't anything for sure or even on the drawing the board. Most of the article is media speculation.

The same article drops this gem:

Quote:

There's also the possibility the Browns could wind up taking either LSU's JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame's Brady Quinn if things fell into place in the first round.

Which proved FALSE.

So its easy to see this is just media tree garbage about Ctown deperate to take a QB wherever they can. And bottomline, they weren't all that deperate. They ended up taking Quinn in a trade when he fell to 22. Again, it was simply a pick that they felt was a good compromise, so they took it. No desperation. No need. Just a pick that they felt was a good compromise.

I know your not as ignorant as you act, I actually think your O.K. but if I need to lay it out to ya I guess I will

1. Which conference (MAC or SEC) has won more football national championships? It's an easy question I'm sure you can get this one.
Oh by the way the conference you come up with obviously has better competion and athlete's.

2.Which QB (Couch or Frye) did we take in the 1st round and which did we take in the 3rd? Come on now the questions are getting easier.

3. What Browns QB has the best winning percentage since our return in 99? I know this is a little harder but I have faith in you!

4. And last but not least who was the starting QB for the Browns during the 2002 season which is the only season we have made the playoffs since our return in 99? The truth hurts buddy!

Tim Couch is still the best QB we have had since our return in 99 untill Brady Quinn takes us to the playoffs which could be this year if we don't waist more time on Frye.

Waste time with Frye?!?!

Frye is our most experienced, and ready QB at this time. Quinn is simply the rookie, that needs some time before he's really ready to get in there.

I personally think that Frye can and will get the job done this year.

He's got a NFL arm, not the strongest, but he wouldn't be in the league if he couldn't throw the ball. He's got some decent smarts, and some above average mobility. Lets see how he performs this year before we say we are wasting our time.

As have been said by Charlie Weiss and many other NFL insiders that Brady Quinn is one of the most NFL ready QBs to come out of college in a long time.

As far as Charlie's experience has it been a good one? I honestly believe you throw Quinn's 4 years at Notre Dame against Frye's entire football history and the experience is pretty much even.

What on earth has lead you to this conclusion? You must be watching a different Frye than I have been watching. When I watch him I see a career backup and the possibility that he may not even be in the NFL in a year or two!

Wow, great response.

We'll see what happens this year. But Frye is a lot better QB than anyone gives him credit for. At one time he was supposed to be our QB of the future--we took him third-round and people were clamoring to put him in.

Now, after a season full of growing pains, you just write him off.

Again, all the knocks on his arm strength are pretty ridiculous. He WOULD NOT be in the NFL if he couldn't throw the ball where he needs to get it.

Last year, I SAW, a young QB, still learning. And learning on the fly, with little opportunity to succeed. He had trouble asserting himself in the huddle with BE and K2, he had no one to depend on for anything really--and you think, you can make a judgement off THAT. Yea, I'm sure a rookie QB is supposed to be great without any support. And Frye had NOTHING last year. He had two prima donna's and one of them had a serious case of the dropsies. He had a #1 receiver that often ran the wrong routes, so he wasn't where he was supposed to be---How does that help a young QB? Hedidn't have a running back to shoulder ANY of the load? He had no confidence in his line in front of him. How does that help a young QB? Any expectations beyond what he was able to do last year are 100% absurd.

This year he has a lot more going for him, and he doesn't have any excuses for poor play this year (barring injuries). I am about 80% positive that he starts all season long. He has a back he can count on--a line that inspires confidence, and an offensive coordinator that is bringing a scheme that will allow him to keep defenses guessing. I bet he has a lot better season this year.

Corp, you've had a problem with every QB since Tim got canned. It didn't (and still doesn't) matter where he came from or how he performed. He wasn't Tim Couch so you hated him. Period. Everyone who came to this board from the old one knows that. So don't try and pass off your opinions as somehow based in anything but your bias towards Timmy.

I especially love how you always bring up how he was the best QB since we came back in '99. Ever occur to you that had the team let any of these other guys play for more than a season they might have accrued some stats, too?

Fact of the matter is that we'll get to see what Charlie can do with some decent talent around him starting in about 36 hours. I'm just worried about what will happen to you if he has some good games. I'm afraid your head may explode......

Would you like a little cheese with that wine??????

You say Charlie is a better QB than most give him credit for???? Where the heck have you been???? Most of the people around here have been riding Charlie's Jock like there is no tomorrow. It hasn't been untill people had seen Quinn against Scrubs that the tide started to turn against Frye. The entire offseason was about downplaying Quinn and Russell and all emphasis on Thomas and Peterson by alot of fans...Now suddenly most people are writing him off?????

You talk about writing the kid off after one season of growing pains....dude some of us never wrote him on...and for good reason.

Just because Charlie can throw a ball 20 yards...it does not mean he has an NFL arm. His throws are almost always LATE...both because of his decision making and because of his noodle arm. Not only are they late but they are usually off target as well. "In the vicinity" is good enough for the MAC...but not for the NFL.

Last year I saw a kid fight like hell in a situation that was not winnable. But just because he went through that .....it does not mean he is a good QB. Frye was supposed to manage the team last year and too often the game was put into situations where he was supposed to carry the team. Something he had the will to do but not the strength or tools to do so.

Part of the reason he was placed in those situatoins was the stuff around him...but you are blind if you don't think that Charlies actions didn't help put the team in those situations either.

There isn't a Team out there that is one bit afraid of Charlie Frye. Heck I am not even sure there is a team out there that actually RESPECTS Charlie Frye "as a threat". I mean think to last year..step outside the Orange and Brown glasses....If you are game planning against us....who are you more afraid of...Droughnes coming off a 1000 yrd season...or Frye????Look at this year....who are you more afraid of.....Lewis or Frye?????

Our ground game suffered because there was no respect given to our passing game. This jump starts a catch 22 situation. Our passing game then suffers because our ground game can't get going. Now you might say that I have it backwards....that you have to run the ball to set up the pass....And you know that would be absolutely correct.....but the lack of respect for Charlies game allows a defense to cheat towards the side of stopping the run from the beginning which puts the run at a disadvantage before the game has even started.....

Charlie has better tools around him this year....and he is going to look better...But he won't start all season long.....and his days are definitely numbered....There is a reason we have made the moves that we have made.

Charlie is a great guy. An incredibly hard worker. He is a guy anyone should be proud to know. He may even be considered a pretty good College QB.....But what he isn't, is a good NFL QB. He has the heart but not the skills.

On Sunday I will root for Charlie with all my heart. I will not be one of the many to start chanting Brady's name. Charlie is the guy on the field. And since he is....he has to be the one to succeed. He has a lot more help now. But that doesn't mean he doesn't have to play well. He has to be at his best if we are to have a chance in this game. Because if he isn't, the opposing defense will again make us one dimensional and run over us as they have Since we came back into this league.

The players will follow Charlie because of his courage and his fighting spirit.....But they will eventually follow Quinn for some of those same reasons and because of their faith in him to get the job done. Therein lies a huge difference.

I agree with a lot of what you say....

My problem is with the interpretations of Charlie's problems last year. The offensive line was a problem. Edwards wanting to play sandlot ball and not learning the offense was a problem. The lack of respect was not for Charlie, but for the whole Browns offense. Carthon was a problem, and we all know it. I will admit, Charlie had problems of his own, but a lot of his problems had to do with those surrounding him.

I was very down on Charlie last year.... I thought Dilfer gave us the best chance to win, and Carthon/RAC made the decision to go with Charlie, based on Dilfer wanting to audible and letting the world know that Carthon was not exactly the second coming of Charlie Weis... The fact that Charlie lit up the pre-season in 2005 in much the same way Quinn has done in 2007 gave the fans and coaching staff an unrealistic view of what could be accomplished with a change of QBs.

I don't think anyone anticipated all offensive problems that were involved with the team... (Edwards attitude, Carthon's offense, the OL, Northcutt over JJ... , Droughns having a bad year:...etc) Charlie has had one helluva learning process to go through. Welcome to the NFL.... I'm willing to give Charlie a last chance to see if he can get the job done with better surroundings and personnel. I don't want to have to go through another year of a QB, who lights up the preseason, having to take his knocks and learn on the field....

Quinn hurt himself by holding out, and not being around for the installation of the offense, but will be the QB eventually..... He just doesn't give us the best chance to win right now....

Best chance to win

Just clicking...

The best chance to win...score more points than your opponent...pretty simple.

Scoring more than your opponent can be done in many different ways...

...Defense holding opponent to less points than offense
...Offense scoring more points than opponent
...Special teams scoring points while holding opponents special teams to minimum or no scores.
...Luck

...Or any combination of the above that results in the Browns scoring at least one more point than the Steelers...

......WOOF...mac

I'm just excited that we have Joe Thomas as the LT... I'm really glad that we got him. I was a huge Adrian Peterson pimp, but man, when it comes to protecting the QB... you can't get too much better than the guys we brought in here...

Good Job Phil!!

Noodle arm?

Open your eyes. The kid has an average NFL arm.

Case in point, the hail marry he threw vs Cincy last year. It went 65 yards in the air. Check out the NFL QB Competitions in the offseason, those guys without pads can barely throw the ball 65 yards, half can, half can't.

You have to earn respect in this league but I doubt that this statment is fact.

And if this is fact which I doubt then the HC is to blame. If a HC in the NFL names a starting QB and the team does not support that QB then the HC should be fired!

Right.....Average.....Thats why he throws the ball a mile into the air when he has to throw the ball more than 15-20 yards downfield making it look more like a punt than a pass.....While most other QB's don't have to. Make no mind that whenever he throws long that the WR who has his man beat by 2-4 yards always has to slowup and then have to fight for the ball because Charlie couldn't get the ball to him.......Gee what was I thinking

I hear this all the time in regards to who should be the starting QB for our Browns. So who really gives us the best chance to win now or in the future?

I'm going to start with the future which to me is the easy one and most of you will probably agree. Brady Quinn was drafted as the franchise QB to help this team win championships well into the future. With the high draft pick and the money he is being paid that should be a given.

Now to the hard part, the present. Savage has come out in the media and said that Quinn will not start the first game (which RAC should be the one making that decision) but reading between the lines he never said he would not play in that game. This game will set the tone for the 07 season and every game is important in an NFL season and more importantly, this season will more likely than not tell the future of Romeo with the Browns.

As far as best chance to win (if my job depends on it) I'm going with Quinn. In all reality this has all the looks of a learning year (no playoffs) and I want the future QB learning from day one.

Charlie Weiss has said that Brady is an NFL ready QB which is good enough for me and I'll bet it is good enough for RAC also!

Ask yourself, who really gives us the best chance to win now and it the future?

Quinn is probably the best Pure QB that we have on the roster no doubt about that, but. If Romeo was to give Quinn the start and the Steeler's give him the typical Rookie treatment and we lose by a landslide where does that put his development. It might not affect it at all but then again it very well could take away some confidence that he has built up in himself from Pre-Season.

Charlie was already thrown into the fire 2 years ago, he's played the Steeler's before, been through the dissapointment, taken many hits from the Steeler's and the Fans. Charlie deserves this shot at beating the Steeler's while Quinn sits on the sideline. He's had the most time with the Starters and he's worked his butt off more than anybody on the team, he deserves his shot. We still don't really even know how our O-Line will hold up, on paper they are drastically better but actual game that means something is a question mark. Charlie being more mobile and able to make something out of nothing gives us our best chance to win right now.

That has zero to do with arm strength. That's accuracy.

Remember when DA underthrew his deep pass in the KC game, I guess according to you that's a sign that he has a weak arm. I mean, he left the ball a good 10 yards short. What a weak arm.

Under your logic, when Frye overthrew BE during the Denver game, that was a sign Frye had a big arm.

Frye has an average NFL arm. He needs to work on his deep ball accuracy.

It's pretty obvious you lack the ability to judge QB's seeing that you don't have the slightest clue about the difference between arm strength and accuracy.

Its pretty obvious that you couldn't find a QB if you were locked in a closet with Otto Graham, Dan Marino, Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas....

Frye has a noodle arm...terrible accuracy....and couldn't throw a spiral with a jugs machine....I am sorry if that hurts your feelings because I insulted your pet....but it is the truth....

Everything I have said about this kid since before we even drafted him has been spot on.....Too bad you are too blind to see it.

Charlie is a great kid and someone who anyone would be proud to call a friend....but he isn't an NFL QB.

So then I guess you think half the NFL QB's have noodle arms. Because Frye has a bigger arm than half of them. The other half have a bigger arm than him.

Then I guess I should change the name of this thread to NO CHANCE TO WIN AT ALL.

Geez people I have said since the day we drafted Frye that he is no better than a backup in the NFL and now I even have to question that!

And I also will repeat what I said earlier in this post. There is not another NFL team that would have Frye as their starter. But some of you can continue to have that delusion if you wish.

And last but not least I really hate to pat myself on the back but I told ya so! And yall know which ones I'm talking to.

If we have any chance to win any games this year it is Brady Quinn that gives us that chance. He may be a rookie but he is by far our best chance to win!

Its pretty obvious that you couldn't find a QB if you were locked in a closet with Otto Graham, Dan Marino, Joe Montana and Johnny Unitas....

well that would depend on if there was a stat book in their with them ....

Not playing Quinn was the only decision I liked today. I dont think it would have changed a thing. I was pretty disappointed that we have a QB controversy after 1 1/2 quarters of football. Lets not sacrifice Quinn just yet. You wanna dance around Frye and DA for a bit that's fine. Let Quinn sit until after the first round of division games and see if one of the two step it up and play like pros. JMHO

Well lets see...most teams cary 3 QB's....that's 96 QB's on active rosters....you want to tell me the names of the 48 QB's that have a weaker arm than Charlie??????

I thought I was wrong once....but I was mistaken...

What's the use of wearing your lucky rocketship underpants if nobody wants to see them????

I have to say.I have read the posts on this board for a few years but rarely post. But I gotta say I don't buy what I am reading about not starting Quinn because it might be detrimental to his developement or ruin his confidence.
I am no football expert but it seems to me most of these guys have been playing ball for a long time. They should know already how to deal with ups and downs wins and losses and tought days, weeks and years. If they don't they probably never will.
I think it all boils down to either the QB can play or he can't, it's part of the game.If you can't read defenses, go through your progressions and everything else thst goes along with being an NFL quarterback, and this means picking yourself up off the ground after a bad play, bad week or bad year and getting back in there without being "mentally ruined" then I don't think that QB will ever be a starter in the NFL.If Quinn knows the play book,I think he needs to play.If he is not mentally strong enough to take his lumps now, he may never be ready.

Most of us lived through the Tim Couch debacle, then saw what happened in Cincy with Carson Palmer. If you lived through those experiences, guess which way seems like the best way to go...????

By the way... There was a great deal of pressure to put Palmer in during his rookie year. The Bengals went 8-8 with Kitna and fans were screaming they would have been in the Super Bowl with Palmer....

Not even in the same class. The only thing Couch and Quinn have in common is that they were/are QBs for the Browns. The situations are totally different.

Oh, while I did live through Couch/Carson, I also lived through Manning, Aikman. Both of which were thrown in there immediately. Just goes to show you there isn't one right way to develop a QB. If Quinn is good, he will overcome the lumps he takes this year.

Going back to the original post how many of you have changed your minds?

Quoting myself:

Now to the hard part, the present. Savage has come out in the media and said that Quinn will not start the first game (which RAC should be the one making that decision) but reading between the lines he never said he would not play in that game. This game will set the tone for the 07 season and every game is important in an NFL season and more importantly, this season will more likely than not tell the future of Romeo with the Browns.

As far as best chance to win (if my job depends on it) I'm going with Quinn. In all reality this has all the looks of a learning year (no playoffs) and I want the future QB learning from day one.

After the events of this past week, again I ask who gives us the best chance to win as our starting QB?

I lived through the Couch ERA and it goes back to my premise that either a QB has all the necessary attributes both physically and mentally or he doesn't and I don't think Couch did.
also if we had an option, other than Quinn, that was even close to Kitna I would say O.K. let Quinn sit.But we didn't with Frye and we don't with Anderson.
So in answer to the big question. If Quinn knows the playbook.I would saty let him play.
