https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/12/03/aaron-rodgers-regularly-changed-mike-mccarthy-play-calls-packersFriction between Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers and ousted head coach Mike McCarthy escalated throughout the 2018 season in part due to Rodgers's tendency to regularly change McCarthy's play calls at the line of scrimmage, according to reports from Sports Illustrated's Kalyn Kahler and Albert Breer.
According to Kahler, Rodgers has long had the autonomy to change plays on the field as he saw fit. During the Packers' start to this season's 4–7–1 campaign, Rodgers reportedly resorted to that right more than then-coach McCarthy would have liked. The rift between the two added to Green Bay's season full of drama and contributed to McCarthy's firing on Sunday.
"[Rodgers changes plays] so often that it can be hard for McCarthy to get into a rhythm as the play caller," Kahler wrote. "McCarthy might call the same play three times in a game, without the play actually being run as he called it. And if McCarthy calls a play that Rodgers doesn’t like early in the game, that can sour the mood for the rest of the game."
Kahler and Breer both reported that the playcalling changes turned into a competition over who can call the better play.
"It’s almost ‘who’s got the better call?'" one anonymous coach told Breer. "Two really smart guys, ultra-competitive guys.”
A lack of talent on the roster, offseason coaching changes and a recent three-game skid further contributed to the Packers' decline. On Sunday, Packers executive Mark Murphy ultimately decided it was time to move on and get a head start on a coaching search.
“The 2018 season has not lived up to the expectations and standards of the Green Bay Packers. As a result, I made the difficult decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately,” Murphy said in a statement announcing McCarthy's firing. “Mike has been a terrific head coach and leader of the Packers for 13 seasons, during which time we experienced a great deal of success on and off the field. We want to thank Mike, his wife, Jessica, and the rest of the McCarthy family for all that they have done for the Packers and the Green Bay and Wisconsin communities. We will immediately begin the process of selecting the next head coach of the Green Bay Packers.”
The Packers are on track to miss the playoffs for the second straight season and for the first time with a healthy Rodgers since 2008. Joe Philbin will serve as the team's interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

I figured something like this was going on (it probably does with every great QB) .. the two couldn't coexist anymore
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

13 years is a long time to work together. Friction like that between the head coach and QB usually doesn't end well-- I'm surprised the relationship lasted as long as it did.

At least Brady knew enough to back off for the good of the team. He knows winning is its own justification.

I think it's very important to have your QB and HC or OC on the same page. You know both guys are going to have huge egos, so it's important that they respect one another and have personalities that mesh.
I think that Sean Payton and Drew Brees epitomize this ideal relationship. I would put them at the top of two guys working well together in regards to coach and QB.
I think Brady and McDaniels is another good example of what I am trying to describe.
Russell Wilson and Pete Carrol have an excellent working relationship.
I believe that Frank Reich has done wonders for Andrew Luck.
It's obvious that Matt Ryan worked much better w/Shanny than he does w/Sark.
Rodgers and McCarthy certainly feuded and you could see this firing coming for quite some time.
Gruden and Carr do not appear to be a good match in Oakland.
I think that teams are going to have to be more cognizant than ever when matching their QB and the coach who will work w/him than they ever have been before.

I don't know bout that. There's more State Farm agents than there are quality NFL HC candidates and it seems he feels his HC can be replaced.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I think the Cheesers lost a really solid coach. Want to call plays? Be a coach. Want to suit up and make huge dollars? Run what you are told, player. Shades of Kosar, but Rodgers "won" this in some way, shape, or form. Sad to see that team collapse so.

I agree with everything you said.
Look at Fisher with Goff. Putrid. Goff with McVay. Well ... 55 TD and 14 INT over 1 2/3 (or so) seasons ..... pretty darn good.
Indy losing out on McDaniel might be a really good thing. Luck is doing very well with Reich. He also has been sacked only 14 times this year. That is huge with his injury history.
We really need to get this hire right. Baker looks like a franchise guy. We need to give him the right coach to develop and guide him ... and to give him the offense in which he can thrive.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

I think this might have been problem Haley and Ben had. I mean they had success, but there was no love lost between them

probably. his longest relationship is with his coach and he couldn't seem to work through it. He always seemed to have issues with his coach every couple years. Rodgers is just that kind of guy I suppose.

It makes me wonder who called the better plays...It also makes me wonder if the Packers would have a better record if Rodgers executed the plays that Mike called...

probably. his longest relationship is with his coach and he couldn't seem to work through it. He always seemed to have issues with his coach every couple years. Rodgers is just that kind of guy I suppose. It's unfair to talk about his family troubles, but it does shed some light on his attitude or personality. It's not the first story of Aaron being a sensitive jerk (the "jerk" is my word). https://deadspin.com/5957852/aaron-rodgers-is-very-sensitive-about-his-height "...in his E:60 profile last year, we learned he wasn't recruited out of high school because he was just 5'11", 165 pounds. But he's clearly still very salty about it, even three inches and 60 pounds later. One poor fan who won a contest to meet him, clearly the high point of the guy's life, made the mistake of telling Rodgers he looks smaller in person. Bad move.
Why did that send Rodgers into a full-on sulk?
"You know I— I just that, that's one of the more ridiculous comments that could be thrown at me is that. Especially coming from somebody who's 5'7"."
Later in the segment, Greg Jennings and Clay Matthews explain that this doesn't surprise them—Rodgers takes a lot of things personally.
Jennings: "He's sensitive. So you got to be careful what you say around him."
Matthews: "Real sensitive."
There's a video in the link of him reacting to the fan that commented about his height. The fan wasn't out of bounds to say he expected him to be taller. He wasn't bashing him, the guy was obviously nervous and simply expected him to be this god-like 6'7" figure he sees him as on the TV, but he wasn't. No big deal. Aaron should have smiled, said something nice and taken the picture. You don't talk back to a fan like that on camera. Heck, what does he do when the camera isn't running? He's statistically one of the best QBs ever. However, he seems like a crabby diva to his family, fans, teammates and coaches. I wonder if that plays into why he's only been to one Super Bowl. Meaning, people just don't like him.

Fame and fortune can change you. And that Rodgers seemed to go from the shy and humble QB small town to being a Prima Donna jerk all of a sudden when he started dating that Olivia Munn at the time. Plus he is separated from his own family. Really could not at all stand to be separated for a second as very close knit with mine thank goodness.

I think he's had a huge chip on his shoulder for years. From being unheralded, to junior college, to passed up in the draft, to sitting behind Favre, etc. It's probably what's made him great ... and made him a jerk.

AR is probably the best QB that ever played the game, Mike wasn't that good, GB did the right thing, IMHO. He wasn't being a jerk,IMHO, he was just seeing what was evident to all. MM was an outdated, average coach at best.

I've thought Rodgers to be unsufferable. I don't want to be grammar police, but since you've used it twice I'd like to point out the word is "insufferable". Correct words are kind of pet peeve of mine, like when people say, "It's a mute point" but mean "moot point". But I certainly don't mean to be insufferable about it.
