I was saying it last week, our run defense, especially on first down is horrific. We nee another DT, Coley and Ogunjobi together cannot stop the run.

The panthers don’t seem to take advantage of week run d’s ... last week caff had like 9 carries for 103 yards ... how does he end the day with 9 carries ... at 10 a pop that’s a nice chunk no matter the score ....
Thee goofy like that ...

It's a weakness. One more thing needing addressed in 2019. I don't think anyone thought that unit was rock solid.

I wonder if /Rivera becomes a HC or DC candidate here ... He doesn't really fit the mold of the type of HC it seems like we should want. He also doesn't seem like the type of guy who should have to take a step back and be a coordinator. Rivera seems like the type of guy who will get another job pretty easily and then get fired two years later after everyone figures out he's not that great of a coach (kind of like his predecessor John Fox).

Ask Hue. At ten a give, do that to them some more. Don't leave a good play till it leaves you. That old school stuff. Just dumb not to do it.

McCaffrey is pretty good too
"First down inside the 10. A score here will put us in the Super Bowl. Jeudy is far to the left as Njoku settles into the slot. Tillman is flanked out wide to the right. Judkins and Ford are split in the backfield as Flacco takes the snap ... Here we go."

The more things change the more they stay the same!
Have we ever had a good run D since coming back in '99?
I know there was one year we statistically had a good one but it was only because we were worst in the league in passing so no team had to bother running other than to kill the clock at the end.

I think our run D was better last year because we had a better, deeper DL

I know Shelton didnt fir the scheme Williams wants to run ... at least thats what i think .. i could be way wrong on that one ...
Anyhow ... i wonder if King John and who ever else was in on that decision would do it again seeing as how the season has turned out ...

I wonder too ... adding Meder, Shelton, and Nassib to our DL would improve our defense IMO

I wonder too ... adding Meder, Shelton, and Nassib to our DL would improve our defense IMO I dunno...Meder is still out of football and Shelton is even more invisible in NE than he was here - if that's even possible...he's just big and fat. Nassib? I don't think he's any better than Zettel or Smith...but his cut was still odd to me.

Not me .. i asked a question ... thats all ... just wondering out loud ...
I want nuttin to do with Nassib .. i could care less what his stats way ... dude prays on the weak and get completely shut down by even average tackles ..
I remember his rookie year when everyone was Gaga over him and his motor and he had 4 sacks or so .. i remember thinking after one game he had 2 or 3 in ... u guys were thrilled ... best pick ever ...
Then i re-watched the game ...
His first sack he was STONEWALLED by the RT .. was sealed and going no where ... QB takes off to his right and makes the blocker useless and Nassib had a clear path opened up by the QB moving ...
2nd sack he told an inside rush lane ... STONEWALLED again ... QB moves up on the pocket and literally runs past the blocker and low and behold Carl had sack #2 for the same reason he got sack #1 ..
Hes not that good .. hes a tweener ... zero upside in his game and we need youngins that are either better or have more upside ..

Nassib was one of those makes a great play and then goes invisible for several.
I agree , never did much for me either.
Shelton I pulled for, but he never became the player I thought or wanted him to be. He has gotten worse in NE it seems
Meder was the guy I really liked as a rotational 7-10 plays a game kind of guy, was sorry to see him go

I'd take Shelton back in heart beat, the guy isn't going to put up great stats but he does the grunt work of tying up blockers to allow the LBs to make plays. PFF gives Shelton a grade of 72.8 which is far better then any of our current DTs grade out.

I remember Shelton being almost a complete bust most of his rookie season ... then his 2nd year he broke out and had a really good year ... then last year ... what happenend ... i know he got hurt ... not sure how much he played but i never remember hearing his name ever ... What happenend to him last year is a mystery to me .... Appearantly his stats stink in NE .. i dont put much into stats w/o me having eyes on it ... stats can be so decieving .. like in Nassib case ... he was IMO an analytics pick ... i think the first year they were forced to use analytics even more than they would have liked to cause of the short time frame they had to pull it off in ... Nassib led the nation in sacks i believe ... WOW ... IMPRESSIVE ... then u go look at his stats ... he had like 6 sacks in a game against NorthWestSwampCountySouthEastMidland tech ... *L* ... prolly a bit to much ... .. Then he had another big sack game against another 3 direction and a saint school ... the total looked great and led the nation i believe ... but once broken down ... not really all that impressive ... He does have a motor though ... cant deny that .... Hes just my example cause we all know him and that made it easier ...

Ogi was near the top of PFF's DT grades at the start of the year but he has really fallen off as the season has gone on. For comparison: Run defense Grade Ogunjobi - 66.9 Shelton - 72.2 Pass rush Grade Ogunjobi - 59.8 Shelton - 62.9 The Pats rotate their DTs a lot more then we do so Shelton has only played 281 snaps to Ogunjobi's 734.

I don’t think our DTs are to blame for the run D - we’ve been mostly gashed on outside runs IIRC. We definitely need more depth at tackle - the amount of snaps Larry plays cannot keep him fresh and if your D is built on disruptive penetrative tackle play then you have to manage fatigue as the quick twitch is the first thing to go. Letting Brantley go was a mistake IMHO - he was a prototypical attack DT but there may be more to that than meets the eye.
Keep the DL fresh plus set the edge and contain better. If we upgrade OLB and get depth at tackle and end our run D would improve IMHO. What happened to that kid Thomas this year?

We have S L O W OLB, and that has killed us on the edge, far too often. We desperately need upgrades there.

I wonder if Avery can add 20# or so ..... maybe rotate with Ogbah, and move him inside on some passing downs ...... and then add 2 speedy new OLB.
I think the days of wanting 2 "big fatties" (320 - 330#)inside on the DL are coming to a close. Offenses are way too fast these days. We need players who can move quickly ..... with suddenness .... and who can chase plays from the backside when necessary.
If the Texans game showed anything, it's how we lack speed at some important positions.

Thee goofy like that ... Idk, but I know AP had 98 yards on 9 carries. He had a TD run of 90 yards. So he went 8 carries for 8 yards after his first carry of 98. I would assume after 8 carries of 8 yards they gave up lol. possible to they ran the ball early and successful, but gave up a lot of points and had to abandon the run. could have been multiple things. Just spitballing tho, I didn't see the game.

Dorsey will get it fixed. We know that not all drafts will be like the last draft? Right? Well, in dorseys draft before here he got Hill, Hunt, and mahommes if I recall. so the last two drafts to go by, yes it could.

I thought Ogunjobie was having a good year? Am I incorrect? I think that he's having a good season overall. He has, IIRC, 4.5 sacks and 5 tackles for loss. He is disruptive inside. Unfortunately, Coley is playing like a statue this year. He had that one Safety, but other than that, little of consequence. He does help in the middle, to some extent, but he is never going to work outside of his limited zone. He is kind of a stagnator, but not a penetrator. This defense needs players who can play at more than one level.

we need faster linebackers and a pocket pushing DT. A DE that can set the edge would be nice since we don't have one of those either. but I think the first two are higher on the list

I thought Ogunjobie was having a good year? Am I incorrect? I think Ogunjobi pops up once or twice a game with a huge play, but is average otherwise.
