http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/article.php?id=7191Bentley placed on PUP list Jeff Walcoff, Staff Writer 08.28.2007 LeCharles Bentley's return will wait at least another six weeks. The Browns center who suffered a torn patellar tendon during training camp in July 2006 was placed on the reserve-physically unable to perform list Tuesday. The rules for the PUP list are as follows: During the first six weeks of the regular season, players on Reserve/PUP are allowed to attend meetings and continue rehabilitation at the club facility, but are not eligible to practice with the club. After the sixth week, the club has a three-week window (Weeks 7-9) to allow a player on Reserve/PUP to begin practicing with the club. Once the player begins practice, he can practice for three weeks before the club must make a decision as to his roster status. At any point following the sixth week of the regular season through the expiration of the player's three week practice window, the club can add the player to the 53-man roster or place the player on Reserve-Injured. Additionally, at the expiration of the practice window, the club can allow the player to remain on Reserve/PUP for the remainder of the season. Bentley has been participating in meetings with his teammates since training camp opened and has been on the field for a handful of practices, but hasn't yet been cleared by the Browns' medical staff to participate. Placing him on PUP frees up a roster spot and gives the Browns six to nine weeks to evaluate Bentley's rehab and progress. For more on this story and the rest of Tuesday's news, check back to ClevelandBrowns.com later this afternoon.

I guess he's shown enough to not be placed directly on IR. I wonder if this is the route the team will take with Baxter as well.

Surely they can make something up. Say he pulled a groin or something a put him on PUP.

Yeah, I'm not surprised by this. I think it's the proper move. If he's taking part in the meetings and staying up to date on the schemes, it should be just a matter of getting back into football shape. 6 weeks of really working out hard should help, then maybe a couple weeks to get some contact in practices, maybe we'll see him about halfway through the season.
But, hey, I'd still be really happy if he sits this whole year and then comes back next year at 100% (or as close as he's going to get). I had always prepared myself for the idea that his career was over.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

When did he practice? He couldn't have any physical contact for a while. I never anything that said he practiced.

Baxter's been running & practicing with the scrubs for a while now, there just hasn't been any contact and he hasn't played in a preseason game yet.

Can't say I'm surprised, it was amazing he even showed up to camp... Get well LeCharles, we know you're working hard to come back.

Bentley, when healthy, is the best center in the NFL.
If the Browns can get Bentley to 80%, he should be better than most.
It's odd that the doctor who did the surgery cleared Bentley to play...but team doctors will not.

It could have as much to do with the timing of his return as anything, he had a short window to get in, get on the field and get in game shape and ovbiously (to the team doctor) he wasn't ready to do that... so he gets another 6-9 weeks to get ready. Not a bad thing, IMO.

Not really. Your talking about 2 different things, his Dr. cleared him to go ahead and try to get ready for football where as the Browns Dr.s will clear him to resume full contact practice.

"He actually already practiced so he is not eligible to be Pupped..."
He went outside with the team while they were practicing but was with the injured and was not in pads. He did some rehabbing outdoors while the team practiced...so did Steiny and Roye at the time as well.
This does not consititute "Practice" as he needed a medical clearance by the team through a physical exam and tests to be considered cleared for contact. This was suppose to be given this week.
I believe our thought process is that we would not want to rush him into service and then lose him. Let him get 6 more weeks of rehab and then upto at least 3 weeks of practicing with the team to get him ready for combat.
Good decision on all parts. JMHO

This is something I'm glad the coaching staff is doing. They are playing it safe and making sure Bentley is ready to play instead of rushing him back just because of the contract and risking him getting hurt again.

Not to mention that Bentley's doctor (who, incidentally, is the Giants' team doctor) is not employed by the people that are responsible for paying Bentley's salary as well as deciding on roster spots, and he isn't the one with his butt on the line saying "yeah, he's good to go for you" to our GM and Coaches
The technicalities of the medical aspect can be viewed different ways depending on how strict a view one wishes to take, and I would expect no less than the Browns' doctors to take a stricter view than an external doctor...because it is THEIR butt on the line if something goes wrong and it is the team they are retained by whose welfare they need to keep in mind as much as their patients'.

I'm sure we all saw this coming.
Baxter, on the other hand, presents a much more difficult choice.

If he was never taken OFF the list, then can you explain how we just put him ON the list?? He had a status, but it wasn't PUP.

If I may.
Bentley was on the PUP list for Training camp, preseason/practice time-frame. That was his previous status. During the 'offseason', OTA's, etc most players are listed on the active roster, no need to put them on IR or PUP until the latest possible time. Bentley was put on PUP prior to the first preseason game (I believe it may have been the first days of Training Camp in fact), he could have come off at any time (not week 6 of the regular season), had he been able to practice (pass the team physical).
This 'preseason' PUP is different than the current PUP list, which is for the regular season. The training camp PUP meant he could come off it at almost anytime, the current PUP means he cannot practice (only attend meetings) for the first 6 weeks of the regular season, and cannot come off of it, or practice until week 6 has passed.
Clear as mud?
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

I am glad to see this vs IR. I pretty much came to grips with him never putting on a Orange helmet in a game so I am happy with this I guess. Hopefully we see him after the bye

It's not the PUP...It's like the "Unable to Perform List"...And the PUP for Bents was EXACTLY what we shoulda done all along...Bring him back come the bye week...Let him get on the field and decide within 3 weeks if we should activate him...He can stick with us and go thru meetings keeping up with the offense during this...GOOD MOVE CRENNEL & SAVAGE!!!...It's ALL ABOUT THE 2 YEAR PLAN...2008...
Watch what happens with Baxter by Saturday...We allowed him to not be on that same list...What does that mean???
We have 3 Gary Baxter options...And the PUP IS NOT ONE...That was a mistake...
1) Release him 2) IR him (Done for the year) 3) 53 man roster him
Baxter IS NOT ELIGIBLE for the PUP list...
Watch this one and don't be surprised if we RELEASE HIM SATURDAY...
Go Browns!!!

I know that's what appears to have happened,, but wasn't there something else about those same Doctors saying he should retire and call it a career.. THen suddenly, they are saying he's clear to play..
All I'm saying is that there is something odd about it.

I think Baxter can make the 53 man roster... I think Phil will feel as if he owes him a chance to get back on the field...
but then again... I was shocked when the Saints cut Joe Horn and he has more history with the Saints then Baxter has with the Browns..

One thing ..when you hear Rac speak about Bentley and other guys and he's decisive about what to do with them..do you really have to wonder if he doesn't know how to handle the QB situation?
He knows exactly what he's doing..he talks to the media in a way to take heat off the players..

That would require way too much perception and thought processing.
Most, knowing very little about effective leadership, seem to prefer that Romeo treat his players like an alcohol-abusing father who beats and belittles his children when they don't meet his expectations.
Any other approach is met with jeers and profanity-laced tirades calling for his head.
Romeo knows exactly what he's doing.

I agree, Tack... I've felt all along that he handles injury situations, player assignments and the team in general like a pro. It's going to be hilarious how many RAC pimps come out of the woodwork once we start winning.

Does anyone get the feeling by his comments that if he had to make a decision today, I mean if he absolutly had to make a decision today he would have to cut him or put him on IR and end his season. But the PUP gives him more time to look at Bentley and maybe see him on the field in 6 weeks...
RAC seemed to handle that well IMO

Bentley certainly doesnt look like a guy who is ready to stop playing football.
He looks to be in pretty damn good shape......certainly doesnt look soft.
As far as Baxter goes,I hope he makes it back. If nothing more than to complete his miraculous recovery.
If the Browns feel good about where he is at I think we do what we can to keep him.
having Bentley and Baxter make it back would do wonders to erase some of that bad stigma that has seemed to linger over the team since 99, even if it is nothing more than an emotional lift.

I'd love to see him run out...as soon as he can as close to 100% as possible, but is that realistic? Is he going to be the same player that we signed last year? God I hope so...but I think we all wouldn't want to see him rushed back before he's ready.
