not even remotely likely.
If that was the case, he wouldn't be starting on PUP... AND he would have been able to participate in contact drills at least once up to this point.
I'd tell whomever you heard that from that they are on crack.
Browns is the Browns
... there goes Joe Thomas, the best there ever was in this game.

They will have to release Bentley. They will do it after this year. He is making big money based upon what he was. Whatever he is unless he gets back to that level they can not afford him.
Baxter a feel good story is (as is Bentley) will more than likely be let go. The NFL is cold business. He can't go on PUP. Baxter has practiced but not in contact. Has not played in any pre-season. IR would lose him for the season. Then the question will hang will be able to play next year?
When these guys sign as FA for mega bucks unless they are at that level teams can not afford to keep them and pay them that price. It's burn and churn baby.

'tain't neccessarily an "all or nuttin' proposition," where injured FA's are concerned, bone.
There's always the option that contracts could be restructured to reflect the player's current value to the organization. In fact, that's not a bad way to go for both parties. If Baxter's skills reduce him to the role of competant nickle, his salary should reflect his new role on the team. My bet is that he'd probably jump at the chance... since being released probably means the end of his career. What other team would take a chance on him, even at nickel?
Same for Bents. If his abilities are diminished, he's looking at less productivity than pre-injury, maybe even a backup role. Pay should relfect his contributuion, as well.
Both these guys know one thing- this organization kept them at a time when many others might have shown them the door, if for no other reason than capspace. That way of doing biz has a way of inspiring a bit of loyalty...
...and for both player and team it's a "bird in the hand" situation: players know they still have a job, and the team knows exactly what it's getting from (and paying to) the player.
win/win? Maybe it's more like making lemonade from life's lemons... noone's happy, but noone's miserable either.
"too many notes, not enough music-"
