Hey gang,
I just signed up for DirectTV. It gets installed on Friday. It comes with Big Ten Network (Go Buckeyes!) and I also signed up for NFL Sunday Ticket.
My question is, anyone here have DirectTV? What are the pros/cons to it?
Anyone have NFL Sunday Ticket? Pros/Cons?
Thanks!!

Have Dtv and Sunday Ticket - no draw backs at all.
I guess the only issue I've ever had is loss of signal during a bad storm - and it has to be a bad one.

Got Time Warner last week. Two weeks ago, when I signed up for the installation, they told me that they had the Big 10 Network on my package - the digital plus whatever...no Big 10 network...extremely frustrated with them.
I understand that there is a business side to the Big 10 and NFL Networks, and what they are charging cable companies to carry them, and honestly I agree that they should be on a higher priced tier - but TW isn't even offering them for extra $$$! Idiots.

Wow - I'd be furious BeerDowner. That's a complete bummer.
I'm excited, I've wanted Sunday ticket for some time, so it should be neat. Plus it'll be nice to record a game I want to see on Sunday's when I'm down watching the Browns.

You do know that in order for TW to carry the channel in a higher tier that the Big 10 Network has to allow it? Based on the 610 WTVN hosting of Big10 Network representative and a TW rep for a conversation it appears that the Big10 are demanding $1.10 per subscriber and that it must be carried in the basic package.
Look at it from TW's point of view. Strongsville has ~17000 residences; if TW has 50% of those as customers (8,500) then they would be adding $8,500 worth of monthly expenses to their basic tier without charging more to the customer. That is just for the Big10 Network; NFL Network is demanding the same thing - a per subscriber fee and carriage in the basic tier.
If the Big10 network thinks that a new channel that isn't even live yet is worth $1.10 per subscriber a month then just imagine what ESPN costs the cable company to provide in the basic tier (where ESPN/Disney requires it to be) and you can start to understand why a company like TW will push back as hard as they can when negotiating with content providers.

I did not know that the B10 Network also had to allow it. That is what befuddled me the most - I had assumed B10 wanted between $1-2 per account, and I know that the NFL wants ~$8 --- which is why I agree that they should be on a higher hier package, that those of us that want them, pay for.
I currently have WOW at the apartment I will be in for 3 more days, and have NFL Network, on their digital plus package - but couldn't watch any games last year, those were blacked out.

Another interesting little tidbit that TW brought up during the debate on 610 (my boss told me about this; I didn't personally hear it) was that one of the video providers that carry the Big 10 Network (DirecTV) have an ownership stake in the Big 10 Network (FOX (owned by News Corp - Rupert Murdoch) owns 49% of the Big 10 Network and FOX also owns DirecTV).
So, any fees that DirecTV pays are basically taking the money from one pocket and handing half of it to a partner while putting the other half in a different pocket.

Think about how much money they'd make back in the advertising revenue from the network. That has to be factored in as well.
Also, keep in mind the record profits the cable companies had last year...
just sayin'

I have DTV, and I love it ... no problems. Although the cost of Sunday Ticket is a little steep. Guess I can live with it though.

I justify it like this (because I used to not have it when I lived downtown, and there were a couple Browns bars around): When watching the game at a bar, I'd spend around $25 to $40 in food and beverages, especially if I went with my girlfriend. That amounts to several hundred over the course of the season.
Sunday Ticket is comparable in cost. However, I get every other NFL game and I get the comforts of my living room couch.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I justified the cost to my wife. I used to drive 2 hours to LA to watch games ... she also gets to keep me around the house during games in case she needs me to kill a spider or something.

I got it so I could see the Browns every week. Can't think of any cons.

While it would be nice to watch games at home, there's not much better than being surrounded by 80 Browns fans who cheer along with you (besides being at the game of course).

I pay about $170 for it or around that, which is about $10 a Browns game... which is about what a movie ticket costs. Well worth it for me.

I agree, I'm a bar guy for the away games. Like the atmosphere, and being able to keep my eye on other games going on, for fantasy football purposes. I'm also a big fan of QB1 on the NTN trivia box.

Agreed. I'm @ every home game, and I'm traveling to Pukesburgh and to the Jets game this year.
Nothing beats seeing the game in person.

I really wish TW would get some deal done and soon, at least with the NFL network. But, I've been saying that for well over a year now and doesn't look like it's going to change anytime soon. I really wish Adelphia was still in business.

The biggest cons are the Super Fan pack, black outs, and watering down of the content. The Browns never seem to be in HD (all of their games won't be until next year and looking at the schedule I expect to be stiffed this year) and DirecTV wants $99 for the HD games and Super Fan. I got Super Fan for free the last two years, but now they want their money. Nope. I already get two HD games OTA on Sunday, then there's Sunday Night Football, Monday Night Football, and the HD games on NFL Network. The playoffs and Super Bowl are all in HD and free. Pre-season is on NFL network. I see all this and wonder why it is I'm paying more money every year just to watch the Browns lose. There's a ton of football on for free or on the paid tier. Then there's Sopcast and bittorrent. The landscape is changing but I find myself clinging to the "Ticket" out of convenience.

I love playing NTN too.
I have only had Direct TV for 3 weeks or so and I love it. They offered me Sunday ticket and every channel they offer for $69 a month. Great deal and I asked them to extend it to me until 9/1 and they agreed. I just don't know if it is worth it since I am in Cleveland (no blackout) and I have season tickets. I just saw this week the Big-ten network is finally on the guide, woo! GO BUCKS!

Yea - I'm a big people person. Not enough of a Browns following out where I live now though.
If I was in Ohio, I'd be at a bar with Beerdowner.

I am sure you have looked, but not that many browns fans? Really? I live about as far away from Cleveland as you can get. Anchorage is a pretty big place (300,000 people in an area about as big as Akron, Canton, to maybe south Cleveland) and our backers club has 28 member, about 14 who show up for games. The buckeyes fan club has about 40 people (120 showed for the Buckeyes vs. that team up north). Heck in Kenai there is a backers club but I don't know how many folks are in it as they are a hundred miles away...maybe 120.
I hope you can find some other browns fans in your neck of the woods! Good luck.

What channel is the big ten network on, on directv? I have looked and can't find it. Is it a standard channel or do I have to have a certain package?

Regarding Backers clubs - yep, I've been to the one many times down in Lincoln Park at The Cubby Bear when I lived down there. Now its about 50 minutes away (without traffic).
When I lived in Schaumburg, there was a Browns backer bar walkable from my apartment at a bar called the Fox & Hound.
I always watch the whole game - it just wasn't as fun at the bar to watch them while we have been crummy. Plus, I get all of the other NFL games - I watch a lot of them as well (switching around during commercials).

Ditto - However I think the additional Super Fan package is a waste of money
I live a looong way from the Backers Club in OKC [200 miles] so I'm glad I can get Sunday Ticket.
The Big Ten Network is just what I needed out here so I can follow the Buckeyes and it's INCLUDED in my package. which is really good.
Signals can get flaky in storms so it's best to shut down and go to bed.

Have had Direct TV for a year and I love it!!! Just the occasional mess up during bad storms. Other than that, no problems. MLB game mix is awsome. Get to watch my Indians and keep an eye on Detroit. September first, Direct TV is adding a bunch of HD channels to their lineup. Make sure you get the little 2 inch cable attachment that hooks up to the back of your HD box. You can't get all the other new HD channels with out it. I didn't get it when I ordered it a year ago, so I ordered it 3 weeks ago. It's free if you don't have it. Just go to channel 499 to see if you have it connected or not.

PROS: You get to see every Browns game without leaving the house! CONS: You will get to see all the other games in HD.....with the exception of the Browns!

From the direct tv website: "Under the agreement with Discovery Communications, DIRECTV will launch four simulcasts - Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel - and two other channels to be named and launched by Discovery at a later date. The HD feeds of the four existing networks will launch in September."
