I can tell that people who don't root for the Buckeyes don't want Buckeye fans to be happy.

Dammit TopDawg, he's onto our master plan... we might as well go ahead and cancel next weeks meeting of the Buckeye Haters Club... I'm sure you, like me, sit around for hours, sometimes days at a time, thinking about how to keep OSU fans from being happy....

I've already rented out the building though and they won't give me a refund! I guess we'll just have to hope Muni doesn't find out where it is!

Found another article on what this thread was ORIGINALLY about .

GOING TO THE BIG HOUSE
No, I'm not in trouble with the local authorities. I'm packing my bags for a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. for Saturday's clash of FCS and FBS titans, Appalachian State and Michigan.

It isn't often that the best teams in FCS get the opportunity to take on the top teams in FBS. I remember Western Illinois giving eventual BCS national champion LSU all it wanted in 2003 before losing 35-7, and I was on hand at Tiger Stadium in 2005 when Appalachian State played LSU virtually even for three quarters before losing 24-0.

While stuffy commentators (are you listening Kirk Herbstreit?) around the country have stuck their nose in the air about this game and others on the opening week's schedule, I am one of those FCS purists that hold out hope that I might be in the press box to witness an upset of epic proportions.

It might not happen this Saturday, but one of these days, an FCS David is going to slay a true FBS Goliath.

Michigan figures to score plenty of points against an Appalachian State defensive line that is lining up three new starters. But the Wolverines are even younger on defense than the Mountaineers and Armanti Edwards, Kevin Richardson, Dexter Jackson and company will be one of the faster squads that Michigan plays all year.

Don't be surprised if ASU hangs around long enough and scores enough points to make the 100,000-plus at Michigan Stadium a bit nervous. I'm not crazy enough to predict an upset, but we can always hope.

Across the state line in Ohio, another of these choice match-ups, dismissed by critics, will be going on at the same time. Jim Tressel has invited his old team, Youngstown State, to come to the Horseshoe and take on his new powerhouse, Ohio State.

Ohio State is just the opposite of Michigan, the Buckeyes are breaking in a new quarterback and a bunch of other offensive personnel. YSU, meanwhile, is coming off its best season since the Tressel era, and Tressel protege Jon Heacock would love to hand his one-time boss a stunning loss.

With a veteran squad, led by senior quarterback Tom Zetts, the Penguins won't be awed by the atmosphere at Ohio Stadium. A year ago, YSU traveled to Happy Valley and turned in a respectable effort against Penn State.

My concern in this match-up is that the Penguins will get worn down by Ohio State's size, as happened last year in the loss at Penn State. But we can always hope that enough fluky plays happen to keep Youngstown State in the game.

Just for giggles I thought I would throw of few of this guys predictions in also:

No. 1 Appalachian State at No. 5 (FBS) Michigan
Close for awhile before Michigan takes control in the fourth quarter for a 35-17 win.

No. 4 Youngstown State at No. 11 (FBS) Ohio State
The Buckeyes wear down the Penguins, but Jim Tressel takes it easy on his old team for a 42-14 victory.

No. 8 James Madison at North Carolina
Sad for Butch Davis that his first game as the Tar Heels' new coach comes in a game like this. JMU scores early and often behind new quarterback Rodney Landers and holds on for a 42-38 victory.

This last one is just for you TopDawg:

Eastern Kentucky at Kentucky I actually have a friend who is a Kentucky football fan. He will be happy at least for one Saturday, as the Wildcats claw out a 42-17 win over the Colonels.

Is JMU beating the Butch Davis coached UNC an upset?

I really don't WANT either Michigan or Ohio State to lose tomorrow, but the pickin' is ripe. Especially for Appy State, clearly the best 1-AA program in the country the past two years and big winners against both of my favorite programs, YSU and The Citadel.

But a victory by either would further validate 1-AA football,...anybody ever heard of Jerry Rice ??? or Walter Payton ?? Anyone now questioning the hiring of "unknown" Jim Tressel ??

Not that either of these 2 has a chance, but it would sure be fun to see happen. I would not cry,....but I can see it coming. Wolves or Bucks in a three team tie for the BCS "spot" in The Game, and getting told "no -- you played 1-AA Appy/YSU this year,...you are not good enough.

I am not crying Auburn "foul" nor lambasting the BCS. I am saying you have no business playing a 1-AA opponent if you are a Big Boy. You shouldn't take the chance,....

It wouldn't be an upset, as much as it is a complete mistake in the first place.

i kind of understand why they do it...

a lot of people think that teams do it to fluff their records, but i don't think either michigan or ohio state is doing this for that reason, both of these programs have long-standing success, and have no reason to...

don't forget that these schools that come and play against obviously bigger programs get a nice chunk of change for their school's programs, and it gets some pub for these places that don't get a lot of football pub... my cousin played for james madison a few years ago, and they got the chance to play virginia tech, he told me it was a huge thing for them, and even though they knew their chances were slim, it was something they still wanted to do badly...

now for me, a buckeye fan and a college football fan, i don't want to see it... it's really meaningless for me to see a boring game... but i definitely understand, i think that if they are going to do this, they should expand the season a game or two... i'd actually like to see games played the first week or two into december, especially if the bcs wants to put games a week, two weeks into january...

Oh, I understand it with no problem, and I'm sure The Citadel has made enough money against Nebraska, Florida State, Clemson, Maryland, and Auburn in the past ten years to pay for shoulder pads until 2018 or better.

I would like to see a system where THAT game doesn't count somehow, but it always will when you have human polls.

Could be a thing of getting your team ready for the season... College doesn't have a true preseason so I don't think that they don't want to go full head on right at full speed at a team that doesn't want to do the same thing. Injuries happen that way. So they might as well give the 1-AA schools some money and get warmed up in the process.

The past 5 years ASU has played teams like Hawaii, NC State, Kansas, LSU, etc. I know that we have recieved well over 3 million dollars from these games in the past 3/4 yrs. alone. That money can and does go right backinto the athletic program.........and not just football. It allows our other teams the ability to travel all over the country. Our non revenue producing sports probalby couldn't survive without these games. They also give us national exposure.

While I do not like the fact that we have a very good chance to be emberassed, I do like the fact that we recieve national exposure. And beleive it or not, we have kept our respect in several of the games mentioned above. Even against a 5th ranked LSU....in Baton Rouge.........on a Sat. night. We took them into the 4th qtr. with the score ONLY 10-0 LSU. not bad for a lowly Div. I-AA team huh...

here's two previews for those who give a .........

Appalachian State at Michigan — Saturday at 12 p.m. ET
Why to watch: There's a leader and best in the house, and it sure isn't the team wearing Maize and Blue. Yeah, Appalachian State isn't in the BCS version of D-I (I'm not doing this, D-IAA is D-IAA), but it's the two-time defending national champion with 17 starters returning. Of course, if Michigan has any real dreams of being good enough to win the national title in the big league, it needs to dispose of the Mountaineers with little trouble. After all, this is Michigan, the early favorite to win the Big Ten title, and with the talent returning on offense, on the short list of teams to end up in New Orleans in early January. With Oregon, Notre Dame and Penn State to follow, this is a better-than-it-looks tune up to get all the new defensive faces in place. However, don't just assume ASU, playing its first game ever against a Big Ten team, is going to roll over and play dead in this apparent mismatch.
Why Appalachian State might win: If Michigan wants a nice test early on from a strong running game, it'll get it from the ASU backfield. Kevin Richardson and QB Armanti Edwards each crank out yards in chunks, with Richardson rushing for 1,676 yards and 30 touchdowns last season, and Edwards rushing for 1,153 yards and 15 scores. This is a very quick, very athletic offense that isn't going to blow the Wolverines off the ball, but it has the experience factor in its favor and knows exactly what it's doing. All Richardson and Edwards need is a little bit of daylight, and they'll keep the chains moving.

Why Michigan might win: Slow down the ASU running game, and it's over. While the Mountaineers ran for 48 scores and gave up just nine, they don't have a big enough line to shove around the Wolverine front four, and they're not so quick that the speedy Michigan back seven can't clean up any messes the line can't take care of. Yeah, the ASU offense can come up with big plays through the air from time to time, but it all stems from getting the ground game rolling first. For the most part, the Michigan defensive line is bigger than the ASU offensive line, so forget about any runs coming up the gut.

Who to Watch: The last time we saw Michigan, the offensive line was having a nightmare of a time keeping QB Chad Henne upright against the tough USC defense. Appalachian State is hardly USC, but it has a quick, aggressive defensive front led by end Gary Tharrington, who cranked out 7.5 sacks and 15 tackles for loss last season. While ASU won't generate consistent pressure, it bears watching for future Wolverine games if Henne is given time to operate. If you see him having to hurry his throws against the Mountaineers, you can bet the Oregon defensive coaches will be licking their chops. Basically, the Michigan defense will get all the attention, but its the offensive line that has to shine from game one.

What Will Happen: ASU will have its moments on offense, but it simply doesn't have the bulk to hold up for a full sixty minutes. It'll take a quarter, and then the Wolverine offense will roll at will.

Line: No Line

Must See Rating: (5 Hef wants you to take his place on The Girls Next Door, but you can't because you have to watch this game - 1 Cavemen) ... 1.5

Fearless Prediction: Michigan 38 ... Appalachian State 10

Youngstown State at Ohio State — Saturday at 12 p.m. ET
Why to watch: OSU head coach Jim Tressel gets to face the program he helped make into a national powerhouse, and while the Buckeyes should be able to show up and win without breaking too much of a sweat, Youngstown State is one of the better FCS (that's D-IAA to you and me) teams, ranked as high as fifth in the nation to start the year. Of course, all eyes are going to be on a Buckeye team that's still woozy from getting run over in Glendale. Call this the first step back on the road to what should be another tremendous season.
Why Youngstown State might win: The edge in quarterback experience is decidedly in YSU's favor with the return of Tom Zetts, one of the program's most successful passers. He's not big, but he's accurate and has 36 starts under his belt. No, YSU won't win, but if Zetts is on, the game could be a bit closer than expected. Defensively, the Penguins were great last year at coming through when they absolutely had to. They might give up a ton of yards, but with the Buckeye attack still needing time to get its feet wet, YSU should be able to come up with a few early stops.

Why Ohio State might win: OSU isn't the only team breaking in a slew of new starters. The Penguins have to replace 12 starters, and while several key players are in place, this is not the time to try to jell and tune up. The formula should be simple for the Buckeyes. Pound the ball at will with a great offensive line and Chris Wells running for big yards, give the passing game time to operate, go home and prepare for Akron.

Who to Watch: Everyone will be focused on new Buckeye QB Todd Boeckman, who not only has to replace a Heisman-winning legend, but has to play well or risk getting pushed aside for Robbie Schoenhoft or Antonio Henton. In a perfect world, Boeckman is sharp and OSU gets out to a big early lead so the backups can show what they can do, but if there's even a hiccup along the way, there will be some grumbling about the starting quarterback situation going into the Akron game.

What Will Happen: Youngstown State has one 11 straight season openers. The streak will stop there. Even though it might just be against YSU, watch for the Buckeye D to try to make an early statement after the way last season ended. Considering Tressel's past at YSU, he won't run up the score if humanly possible.

Line: No Line

Must See Rating: (5 Hef wants you to take his place on The Girls Next Door, but you can't because you have to watch this game - 1 Cavemen) ... 1

Fearless Prediction: Ohio State 40 ... Youngstown State 0

Appy is no lowly Div 1-AA team,....BTW, The Citadel beat Appy the night before my son was born,...just a little humor (LONG time ago) It was a game my other Dawgs shouldn't have won, and the old lady was so excited jumping up and down, we think it caused her to start labor that evening. Next morning we had us a linebacker,...I love Appy State !!

As a Cane fan, can I say I'm a little upset at ESPNU... Sure, its great being able to watch the Canes game from here in Ohio, I love it. However, having Larry Coker as the color guy for a Hurricanes game? Please...

On the plus side, Miami is winning 10-0.

My cousin has to be happy. He goes to ASU and does a lot of stuff with the games.....I think he was a radiko announcer maybe. Something like that, I forget. But he had worked somewhere in the booth for the games last year, not sure about this year.
