Injuries happen, and having a reliable backup is important. The Pats have a long established pattern of drafting B/U QBs, keeping them for 3-4 years, then replacing them when they go into FA. Most have gone on to be starters on other teams. They have been able to do this because of Brady. Hopefully, we are now in that situation.

Up until Jimmy G, they also had a pattern of getting seriously over-compensated for their back-up based on little more than unseen "potential" because folks overvalued them because the guy had "learned behind Tom Brady" for a few years..

That's another we should try to do, bring in a back-up, make them look good in camp for a few years, then trade them for twice what they are actually worth.

Did the Pats get anything for Hoyer? I don’t think they did. I think they got like a sixth round pick for Mallett. Cassel played and played well.

Maybe they haven't fleeced the NFL as much as I thought.. maybe I'm just thinking about all of the times people TALK about trading stupid high draft picks for Pats back-up QBs..

And I would disagree that Cassell played well. He only had 1 year the rest of his career that was even close to that 1 year he started in New England.. he was average at best. Certainly not worthy of the late first round pick KC gave up for him..

I just meant that Cassel played well in the season he started for the Pats. Young QBs who can start will always fetch a nice pick if placed on the market.

I like Brogan, and there's 10 or more of him in the league already. Have no problem with a late round pick if his strengths are in line with our offensive philosophy. I want a backup that stays in his lane, soaks it up like a sponge and is not part of a revolving door of back-ups. Let's get someone in here that fills the specific role for three years or more.

Jacoby Brisset is another. Though I can’t recall what the Pats got from Indy on that deal.

I think they got a 3rd round pick for Brisset, but I'm not positive.

What has Baker done to make you think he wants to skate by? All I see is a smart, hardworking kid..

Agreed that having a reliable backup is important. As we know all too well, just getting into the playoffs is hard enough. Every game matters-- the ones the QB misses with injury count just as much as the others.

Another thing to consider is that seeding matters... a lot! That first round bye and home playoff games make advancing deep into the playoffs much easier. The Pats actually established a nice little system that looks like it will come to an end this year: earn the #1 seed, win a couple home playoff games, bam in the Super Bowl.

A couple years ago, Jimmy G and Brissett combined to go 3-1 in Brady's absence and they indeed got a #1 seed and ultimately won the Super Bowl, over the Falcons.

Like others said, they got decent enough returns when they traded those players. Having a reliable backup is the more important thing though. Look what the Eagles did last year with Nick Foles.

Sometimes I wonder what you guys are looking at and how do you evaluate things.

You do know Baker BROKE THE RECORD for TD passes by a Rookie QB, RECORD as in the best yet. But you cannot tell that he is THE GUY...then I have to question your ability to tell.

How does 20 TD for 20 RED ZONE TD success with ZERO, 0, NIL INTS. Are you kidding me, you don't see that as proof that we got somebody very special here.

Amazing, simply amazing. yeah now I will be told how vicious and mean I am cause I got a hard on for Baker. Nope, I'm a Browns fan not a Baker fan. I love Baker cause he is the best thing to happen to the Browns, Better than Sipe, better than Kosar. If THE GUY does not show up for you in what he did this season, I am sorry I just don't get this type of thinking. What does a kid have to do...those are INCREDIBLE accomplishments simply Incredible and you got to say well he has had MOMENTS....MOMENTS?!? Just the best moments of any QB to come along...ANY who has that kind of success rate in the Red Zone and us a team who barely can score 25% of the time.

If you got one area to evaluate a QB look at the Red Zone. Watson? Wentz? They are all in the same class. Except that Baker was a rookie. Wentz did well his rookie season. But I don't think they were 100% success that Baker was. Only misses were Victory formation or late game where we ran the ball and were not successful for TD as we were running the clock and well ahead.

That was for stats.
