For those of you who want to in ANY way excuse or lessen the severity of the actions of Mike Vick,, you need to see it for yourself,
If you have HBO, watch the most recent episode where they document the dogfighting business in enough graphic detail to turn the stomach of the most tolerant person on the planet.....
I could hardly stand to watch, but I made myself do it. I can't talk about it other than to recommend that if you watch it, DO NOT let children see it..
DISGUSTING is the only word for it.. A vet was interviewed for the piece and his verbal discription of the people that are involved in Dog Fighting is accurate in my estimation,, I believe his exact name for them was "Low Life Piecs of Chit" Yeah, that was it.
And I agree.

Now see I don't get this type of logic. If you didn't want to watch it then why do it ? I have no interest at all in seeing a dog fight just as I would have no interest in seeing a video about rape. Intellectually I know what they are and find them reprehensible so why on God's green Earth would I want to see the same images that I would then turn around and rail against?

I don't think some people know a thing about the brutality involved in dog fighting and what goes on behind the scenes. I can understand somebody wanting to know even if it is unpleasant.

Maybe thats it then although I am pretty sure most people understand that dog fighting is brutal without ever wanting to see the actual event. To each his (or her ) own.

Oh I don't know about that. .............I have some friends from the south. They seem to think it is ok to have dogfights as they are "just property".
They own dogs, and are good dog owners, but since they have never seen an actual dogfight (me either) that it isn't that bad. They think it is like a chicken fight. They seem to forget chickens do not have teeth, and that even chicken fighting is barbaric.

woudn't it be a little odd to rail against something that you don't know a lot about.. I knew of the brutality of dog fighting itself.. I was completely unaware of how they prepare these killer dogs to fight and kill.. I was unaware for instance that they will pick up someones pet,, tape thier mouth and let a fight dog just brutalize them till they die..
I didn't know that aspect of it.. I do now however. I didn't like Dog Fighting before,, I like it less now.
But in short, if you are going to talk aboiut something,, you should know what your talking about, thus the reason for me watching the piece on TV...

Well Damon,I DO know quite a bit about. And for anyone who tries to rationalise it or says "It's not so bad" or "They're just property" I think they should HAVE to watch something like this so they would have some clue as to what they're really talking about before they open their mouth on the subject. But that's JMHO.

yeah Pit, that's also why I brought it up on here. I do believe that some people that didn't think that it was "so bad" or they are "only dogs" didn't really understand the inner workings.. I didn't either for that matter. I watched for educational purposes. I wanted to learn more about it....
But like you say Pit, those that think it's not so bad.. I hope they watch the program. If they still think it's not so bad, then I don't know what to say..

About 15 years ago, my wife and I moved to a much bigger city than the one where we met and hooked up. That first Summer, dogfighting was the "hot topic" on the local news. Talking heads were warning pet owners to keep close tabs on their pooches, because pets were being stolen from backyards by these people, to serve as training fodder for their "biological killing machines."
Day after agonizing day, we saw grainy newsreel footage, showing Bull Terriers on treadmills, scarred fighting dogs rescued by animal shelters and Humane Societies, and countless (!) carcasses of family pets being hauled out of some dirty-ass inner-city garage.
A local NewsTeam investigation led to a regional FBI probe, which exposed a network of corrupt human beings- ranging from Crips & Bludz to Good ol' Boys... all united in this illicit gambling enterprise. (Politics AND profit make for some strangeazz bedfellows, I guess...)
IMHO, this is just another example of how low Human Beings can scrape, when they're committed to representing the bottom of the human evolutionary barrel.
These people are part of society's "bottom-feeders"... but I'm convinced that they would engage in some other disreputable enterprise if there wasn't a demand for their services. And apparently, that demand comes from levels of society ABOVE them... because that's where the money rests. (What a bitter irony, don'tcha think?)
Greyhound racing in Florida. Horse racing in Kentucky. Cockfights in Tennessee, Alabama, and rural Pennsylvania/Ohio/upstate NY. ...and dogfighting in every state, rural hamlet and major metropolitan area of Our Fine Country.
I laughed my ass off, 15 years ago, when I saw an episode of "Married With Children," wherein Al Bundy was giving some life's wisdom to his son Bud. He said, "Son- let me tell you about people. If you don't remember anything else I ever tell you, remember this... it will help you when you grow up.
People.... are no damned good."
Sad to say it.... but Al was right.
Damn. Guess I'll go have a stiff drink, and go to bed. Maybe things will look better tomorrow.... although I rather doubt it.

ever see what they do to a racer who pulls up lame?
In most cases that animal's days are numbered... and that number rarely breaks 2 digits...

I need help understanding how you connect the first two, with the last two.
In a town not far from Naples florida, there is a dog track that I once visited... Once again, I had no idea what I was in for but I went with a group of people from work.. (we were in Florida for a sales meeting)
I went there, didn't seem much that disturbed me when I looked at racing.. I had no idea what goes on behind the scenes..
Well, as we were leaving, I saw a kinda display and booth where a couple of people were talking about the horrors of Greyhound racing....
They told me things, showed me pictures of dogs that just digusted me to no end... Horrible,, Just horrible. But, not as bad as Dog Fighting..Still, I won't visit another Dog Track again..
I know next to nothing of horse racing.. But I have a friend that owns several race horses and I hear her talk about them all the time (actually she doesn't talk about anything else but her horses,,,,boring) But based on her comments, he horses are treated like royality,,, and so are others,,
So I don't know if there is anything terribly wrong with Horse Racing...
Cockfighting,,,, Folks, I don't think anything is worth watching if it pits too living things against each other to see which comes out alive.... it's a pretty simple rule for me..

I hope no one takes this out of text and thinks's I am implying that Dog fighting , cockfighting is right . Just Damanshot brought up a great point and something alot of people never even think about. The animal fighting and animal racing are very simuliar in the way they Breed, the animal's and condition them for thier different sport's. Animal racing breeder's when they have a animal that preform's poorly they kill them animals off . I'm sure some do get them put to sleep by a vet . But some do put them down in way's that are very sick . That rape stand that Vick possesed for breeding , They use for greyhounds and for the horses they use something with the same idea. All I'm trying to say is that Animal racing has it's DARKSIDE that people never hear of and they will still go and waych them not knowing what they contribute to. Dog fighting is Different in the sporting concept , But the Breeding and way's of getting that 1 special animal is almost alike .

Pit,,, NOT EVEN CLOSE,,,,,
Thorobreds aren't treated in such a manner.,. even the ones that don't make it are sold,, But unless injured in a serious fashion, they aren't tortured such as dogs for dog fighting are,,,, They may be put down, but NOT tortured,, Don't confuse humane treatment for out and out viciouis actions of INSANE individuals,,,'
