Yet ... somehow ..... when I managed for Wendy's, we had a hundred people at a time showing up to get a job whenever I had an open interview day.

Most of the local Wendy's have hundreds of applications from people wanting work. They start at minimum wage, in most locations. We didn't drug test, but I could see if they did .... because who wants someone showing up for work ... stoned .... and accidentally sticking his/her hand into a deep fryer because they are high. and not paying attention to their job?

I can say this about car sales, since you brought it up ...... sales is the best paying hard work, and the worst paying lazy work there is. My employer required a drug test. Heck, we could be dealing with $40K vehicles, and they have only become more expensive since my day. It only made sense to make sure than we didn't have people operating these vehicles who were high.

I do agree with you that as we approach full employment, employers do have to start paying higher wages to fill jobs. More competition for employees means higher wages.

I have to laugh, however, when you opine that $17/hour is some slave wage. Heck, GM pays $17-19 on their assembly line. Average pay for a medical office manager is $18/hour. In many cases, you aren't going to walk into an office, with no experience, and make $20/hour.

Many people put getting high above having a good paying job. There is a kid in my extended family that does. He wants to smoke it up and make $60k, and can't figure out why no one wants to hire him, especially with no pertinent experience.

Well, when your at fast food, you're dealing with a lot of teenagers. FF is actually one of the few jobs any teenager can get. I'm not surprised you saw a lot of applications. Teenage and young adults workers will always be a growing field...

Never did I insinuate that $17 was a slave rate lmao. If you read my post, you would see where I encourage factory work to start around there. Again, if people want a skill workforce then they have to pay for it. Clearly GM is doing a better job than most at this part if they can start people at $19, while others are posting jobs for $14 an hour. As much as GM would love to pay everyone minimum wage, you pay for what you get. There's a reason that they start at $17 and it's not because they're trying to redistribute the wealth rofl

I will agree to disagree with you about sales. Nothing makes me feel sleezier than selling and I've never met a salesman I liked. It certainly has never felt like the hard work that you can only get busting your butt for 10 hours a day. But we'll agree to disagree here. But the point about sales wasn't about working hard or not, but Americans penchant for signing idiotic forms without reading them. That was the point of your hypothetical, right?

Entry level copywriting in Columbus starts at $15 an hour. Most office administrative roles also start there. Most of those positions, especially copywriting do not drug test. There are plenty of jobs that do not drug test.

The line? It's the finest of lines. It's like raising a child... they do something wrong, you have to be stern. Bad behavior = repercussions. We've entered an age where everything deserves sympathy. Parenting means excusing wrong-doing and finding a scapegoat. Mentoring means patting them on the head and saying "it's okay Bubby, we'll try harder next time". The average human's main form of helping is saying "you have my support 100%" and walking away... hoping the problem goes away and they don't have to deal with it.

Tough love, bro. As soon as you know they need it, have the balls to give it.

You’ve never meant a salesman you’ve liked ... WOW ... i’ve met hundreds of them ... sales has changed over he years u oughta re-think your PREJUDICES ... wink ...

Y-TOWN u get that saying about “highest paying hard working or easy work and lowest pay” slogan out of a Tom Hopkins book? ....

Right before i got out of the service someone turned me on to “How to master he art of selling” by Tom Hopkins ... that was the first line ... sounded good to me as i always had been and still am a hard worker ... i’m not smarter than most ... but i’ll outwork almost everyone ... so that sounded GREAT to me ...

And Mr. Hopkins was right and i am living proof of it ... thumbsup

What if, the encouragement from fans was enough? Tragic is the word I choose to use. We still have to have his back, he’s still one of us. Chemical dependency can affect any human.

How do you know he doesn't have a mental illness? Many people have psychiatric issues that lead to self destructive behavior. It's nothing to laugh your ass off at.

Reports are that there were multiple violations of the drug policy for this recent suspension and for more than marijuana: https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/1076836929168121857

ESPN is reporting that the Patriots had a security team that was assigned to Gordon "at all times" to prevent a slip up. http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25600...e-security-plan

Quote:
Sources believe that Gordon somehow eluded New England's security team during the Patriots' Nov. 18 bye weekend. Gordon was suspended indefinitely Thursday for violating the terms of his conditional reinstatement under the NFL's drug policy.

If you have to have a security team to manage a player, something tells me it's better to not have that player.

some of yall seem to take delight in the fact that a guy is having a trainwreck life with drugs and mental health issues.

especially Haus. seems really weird.

bro you've been posting nonstop in the thread in PF and the one here.

you can only use "kick rocks" if you're actually correct on the situation. which you are not.

so again, its really weird you seem to be giddy over josh being a trainwreck. and you're the only one who's really posting non stop over it.

kinda odd. but i dunno, maybe you like seeing people fall to drug abuse and mental health.

Josh Gordon.. the guy who has been given more chances than maybe anyone we've seen because of his unique athletic ability. Josh Gordon, the guy who has failed all those chances, who admitted in an interview to shooting guns at people, who would get drunk or high before every game as a member of the Browns.

At a certain point, I feel that being a professional athlete is a privilege, and when you do half of what Josh has done, it is a privilege one should lose. I think we, as a society, are way too obsessed with winning football games to the point where we sabotage our own schools and communities to do it.

I'm not giddy that he's a train wreck. I wish him well, I hope he gets his life together and can contribute to society in some other line of work.

You're going soft bro.. getting offended at me posting Josh Gordon updates in the Josh Gordon thread. Get it together Swish.

again, you posting non stop about this particular situation is weird.

i've given gordon plenty of harsh criticism every time he got busted. so its not about being soft, its about seeing certain posters seem to be happy, whether its due to them feeling vindicated, or just happy to be right, or whatever it is you want to call it.

What do you expect to see in this Josh Gordon thread when he was recently suspended, and more details come out about his case?

If you're going to get upset about Josh Gordon news and people saying less-than-glowing things about the guy, just skip the thread altogether.

I had already edited that out but somehow you responded in like 30 seconds.

And yes, it is weird how some of you rant about Trump all day, every day in the Politics section.

Heck at the rate that you post, you're posting all day, every day in every section.

still doesnt change the idea that you seem oddly happy about the fall of gordon.

all that other nonsense in your post doesn't change that, unfortunately.

Nah, PerfectSpiral seems oddly happy about the fall of Gordon. Read the last two posts of the other thread: https://www.dawgtalkers.net/ubbthreads.ph...ued#Post1570299

Winning arguments (as judged by sensible adults) in the Politics section is like taking candy from a baby.

The problem is that place is very toxic and easy to get sucked into never-ending debates with less-than-sensible-adults that go nowhere. So, I try to avoid it.

Anyway, back on topic.

Can somebody who knows more about addiction than I do explain Josh's behavior? I usually have a pretty good feel for what makes people tick, but I have a hard time understanding this.

It's not just addiction and what people go through in general. It also includes Josh's specific situation, where he had top-of-the-line care in the NFL, a terrific support structure to help him along the way. Apparently he even had a security detail to prevent this kind of thing.

I guess it's the barrier to getting drugs, but still getting them anyway, that confuses me. Like it's one thing to give in when it's spur of the moment, quite another to plan and elude team security to do it, knowing full-well the consequences.

Somebody help me understand this better. I'm not gloating or trying to take a backhanded-swipe at Gordon. I just don't really know, and I have a feeling some other people wonder the same thing.

Mental illness and addiction go hand in hand.
Not everyone with addiction is mentally ill.
But most people with mental illness have an addiction of some kind as a crutch to help them cope.

He hasn't developed healthy, effective skills to cope with life stressors, and resorts to using what he has since his teenage years....drugs and alcohol. If he has a comorbid mental health diagnosis such as major depression or bipolar disorder along with the substance dependence, it makes developing these skills much more difficult, and if untreated...impossible. There's not enough available information to know exactly what's going on with Josh, despite what some of the pseudo interweb psychiatrists here might tell you.

Mental Health By the Numbers

Millions of Americans are affected by mental health conditions every year. Here are some facts about the prevalence and impact of mental illness.
Children's Mental Health Facts Infographic Infographic
Download the children and teen infographic. Download the mental health facts infographic. Download the multicultural mental health facts infographic.
Prevalence of Mental Illness

Approximately 1 in 5 adults in the U.S.—43.8 million, or 18.5%—experiences mental illness in a given year.1
Approximately 1 in 25 adults in the U.S.—9.8 million, or 4.0%—experiences a serious mental illness in a given year that substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities.2
Approximately 1 in 5 youth aged 13–18 (21.4%) experiences a severe mental disorder at some point during their life. For children aged 8–15, the estimate is 13%.3
1.1% of adults in the U.S. live with schizophrenia.4
2.6% of adults in the U.S. live with bipolar disorder.5
6.9% of adults in the U.S.—16 million—had at least one major depressive episode in the past year.6
18.1% of adults in the U.S. experienced an anxiety disorder such as posttraumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and specific phobias.7
Among the 20.2 million adults in the U.S. who experienced a substance use disorder, 50.5%—10.2 million adults—had a co-occurring mental illness.8

Social Stats

An estimated 26% of homeless adults staying in shelters live with serious mental illness and an estimated 46% live with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorders.9
Approximately 20% of state prisoners and 21% of local jail prisoners have “a recent history” of a mental health condition.10
70% of youth in juvenile justice systems have at least one mental health condition and at least 20% live with a serious mental illness.11
Only 41% of adults in the U.S. with a mental health condition received mental health services in the past year. Among adults with a serious mental illness, 62.9% received mental health services in the past year.8
Just over half (50.6%) of children with a mental health condition aged 8-15 received mental health services in the previous year.12
African Americans and Hispanic Americans each use mental health services at about one-half the rate of Caucasian Americans and Asian Americans at about one-third the rate.13
Half of all chronic mental illness begins by age 14; three-quarters by age 24. Despite effective treatment, there are long delays—sometimes decades—between the first appearance of symptoms and when people get help.14

Consequences of Lack of Treatment

Serious mental illness costs America $193.2 billion in lost earnings per year.15
Mood disorders, including major depression, dysthymic disorder and bipolar disorder, are the third most common cause of hospitalization in the U.S. for both youth and adults aged 18–44.16
Individuals living with serious mental illness face an increased risk of having chronic medical conditions.17 Adults in the U.S. living with serious mental illness die on average 25 years earlier than others, largely due to treatable medical conditions.18
Over one-third (37%) of students with a mental health condition age 14–21 and older who are served by special education drop out—the highest dropout rate of any disability group.19
Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S., and the 2nd leading cause of death for people aged 10–34.20
More than 90% of people who die by suicide show symptoms of a mental health condition.21
Each day an estimated 18-22 veterans die by suicide.22

I have a ton of stuff to say on this subject, but for now, I will limit it to this:

People living in poverty are much less likely to seek help for mental health issues than those who have money. Thus, the numbers are a bit skewed
