Just saw this and figured the firing season is going to start in less than a week ..there’s all ready 2 openings and i suspect by tuesday there’ll be another 2 or 3 at least ... just not sure exactly who those 2, 3 or even more will be at this point .. here’s what i just read ...
Jim Caldwell - C - Free Agent
ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reports Jim Caldwell has interviewed for the Packers' head coaching job.
The Packers are seeking a replacement for Mike McCarthy, who was fired after Week 13. Caldwell spent this year out of the league after being let go by Indianapolis at the conclusion of 2017. Despite his seven years of NFL head coaching experience, Caldwell has never been a difference-maker and would be an uninspiring retread for a Packers team in need of a jolt. Caldwell's interview satisfies the Rooney Rule.

The maybes ...
Gase Rivera ... i dont believe it but it may happen ... Marrone ... mistake IMO .. hes a good coach ... Gruden - another mistake IMO ... Lewis .. may get promoted, he wont get fired .. Quinn .... he appears to be safe ... MORON of an owner there also ..
I’m going with 4 more ... maybe 5 ...
Then the FUN BEGINS .... we get to watch the domino’s fall ... slowly but surely ...

Is it official or u just giving us what u think ... any chance u can be a little more clearer next time .... i get the quick reply thing .... the vagueness here ... i dont get ...
Chuck Pagano - C - Free Agent
The Packers interviewed Chuck Pagano for their head coach job.
He joins Jim Caldwell as early candidates the Packers have met. Pagano spent 2018 out of the league after getting fired from the Colts. He has ties to both interim HC Joe Philbin and DC Mike Pettine, so it makes sense the Packers brought him in. We'd be surprised if Green Bay's Pagano interest was more than a courtesy interview.

Isn't Pagano a 3-4 guy?
Also, didn't Coughlin come out and say Marrone is safe?

I think it was the owner that said there all safe ...
I said a possibility ... they said Koetter’s safe in TB also ... don’t believe that for a second ...
In J-Ville .... whoever signed off on giving Bortles another year oughta be fired for that decision alone ...
Coughlin has been BRUTAL running that team this year ...
They give up a 3rd for Hyde and then play a late round rookie over him in week 15 ... *LOL* ...

i still dont understand why the lions fired Caldwell. the guy gets you to the postseason twice in 4 years, despite not having that much talent on the defensive side of the ball.
people keep saying they somehow won "despite" caldwell being the coach.
well, early results aint looking too good under patricia.

There is a lot of talk that Marrone has allowed discipline to get extremely lax this year ..... and that's not a good sign for a discipline oriented head coach.

i thought we got a 5th for Hyde?
But Fournette has been an issue there as well ... he was maybe not as hurt as he led on

I'd watch for Bowles to be scooped up by us, especially if we go the Arians route
He is a very good STs coordinator

I'm no expert but it seems to me thAt the Brown's have played with 4 DL and 3 LBers for the majority of snaps, certainly on 1st down and 2nd and medium ... Wouldn't that indicate our base is 4-3?? I know there are lots of variations ... But it *seems* to me thAt we are in 4-3 more than any other formation and it's not close ??? Not sure about other teams. I know as a trend the NFL has lot more balanced\combinations of fronts etc .... I'd be interested in the stats for the Brown and the league.

I think playing 3 LBs is a fading trend. 3 CBs are used 65% of the time now

I know as a trend the NFL has lot more balanced\combinations of fronts etc .... I'd be interested in the stats for the Brown and the league. The most recent data that I’ve seen – from last season – showed that the Browns used base 4-3 personnel on two-thirds of their snaps. I’m not sure what the exact number is from this season, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the Browns are still near the league lead in snaps from base defense. It’s speculation, but I think Gregg Williams still prefers having more defenders in the box because it gives him more blitzing options closer to the quarterback. The Browns were clear outliers, though. The league average was 33%. Only three teams during the 2017 NFL season (Browns, Rams, Panthers) spent a majority of their snaps in base personnel. Two defensive minds often mentioned alongside either Arians or Kitchens, Pagano and Bowles, spent 42% and 37% respectively in base. The Patriots, for example, spent just 15% of snaps in base, 48% in nickel, and 37% in dime or quarter. The biggest difference between a 4-3 and 3-4 these days is run-fit philosophy. Because, if it’s a passing down, you should almost always be in a nickel or dime “sub-package”. Disclaimer: Some teams use a third safety in nickel packages and deploy them in similar positions to the third linebacker in a 4-3 base, but it’s still nickel personnel.

Good post, but I will add that Gregg Williams probably utilizes his base package more than other teams due to personnel rather than preference.
I say that because--if I recall correctly--he played with 1 or 2 LBers a lot when he was w/the Rams.
I believe that Williams trusts some of his linebackers, especially Schobert, more than he does either of his two strong safeties in coverage.

Oh, I agree that there are a number of variables. And the numbers are also a function of his trust in Schobert and, to a lesser extent, Collins. Injuries and depth at defensive back also play a factor, especially in 2017.
Ogletree and Barron did indeed play huge roles in that 2016 Rams defense. Beyond them, they didn't have much at linebacker, so they spent a good amount of time in sub-packages, but I still believe that, with ideal personnel, Williams loves the pressure options that a seven-man front affords.

I just can't see Marvy Marv coaching next year. Based on little except his body of work.

We’ve used two linebackers most of this season. Even when Kirksey was healthy, Collins went to the bench.

He had the dude he played as a “tweener” when he was with the lambs ... Mark Barron may have been his name .... he was a safety by trade but played a “hybrid” position where he lined up and acted like a LBer more ofthen than not ....
When we drafted Peppers ... i ASSumed he saw the same role for him ....
Not sure but it seems to be moving in that dorection as Pepp has been blitzing a lot more ... that leads me to believe hes playing closer to the line but that is 100% CONJECTURE on my part ... *L* ...
I have no clue if that is true ... i do know hes finally starting to make some plays ...and Barron made a lot of them .. *L* ...

Peppers lines up all over the place. That's what he's meant to do. Playing him so much as a deep safety last year is not... call it having a deeper team, or growing as a player or whatever, but he's the kind of guy you can move around and have him do different things.
He can still line up as a deep safety, but also in the box, as an edge defender (he did this several times in the Broncos game), and even corner sometimes.
Sometimes it's helpful to think in terms of skill sets and what a player can do, regardless of what a player's listed position is. You see offenses move players around, they have running backs with different talents, wide receivers masquerading as tight ends, etc.
The defense should have guys that can counter that... e.g. a DB that can line up all over the place, a hybrid LB-safety type to blur the line between base and nickel, or handle those tight ends that are too big for a corner, but maybe a little too fast for a typical linebacker to cover, and that sort of thing.

that's why peppers' improvement is so big ... the hybrid position is integral

Pittsburgh - Mike Tomlin - Safe Baltimore - John Harbaugh - Safe now, but was said to be on the hot seat earlier this year and only has one year left on his contract after the 2018 season. Cincinnati - Marvin Lewis - Could be gone, you never know with the Bengals. There are rumors that he will take a front office position. Vance Joseph has already been rumored as a potential replacement ( https://247sports.com/nfl/denver-broncos...port-126804253/). Patriots - Bill Belichick - Safe Bills - Sean McDermott - Safe Dolphins - Adam Gase - They are firing their VP of football operations ( https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/armando-salguero/article223556745.html) and say that Gase is safe. We all know how it goes when the person is at the top is fired. I wouldn't be shocked if Gase is fired, but next year is definitely a make or break year. Jets - Todd Bowles - He gone. https://nypost.com/2018/12/03/the-jets-should-do-right-by-todd-bowles-and-fire-him-now/Colts - Frank Reich - Safe Texans - Bill O'Brien - Safe Titans - Matt Vrabel - Safe Jaguars - Doug Marrone - I'd say this one is 50/50. They hired him to work with Bortles and Bortles Bortled all over the place this year. There have been rumors of Tom Coughlin coaching the team next year ( https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/12/09/tom-coughlin-jaguars-head-coach-giants-doug-marrone). This team is a mess. Chiefs - Andy Reid - Safe Raiders - Jon Gruden- Safe Chargers - Anthony Lynn - Safe Broncos - Vance Joseph - Toasted. ( https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/12/20/vance-...ay-front-office) Vikings - Mike Zimmer - Safe Bears - Matt Nagy - Safe Packers - none - It'll be interesting to see who takes this job. Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano already interviewed, but I would be shocked if either got the job. Lions - Matt Patricia - There are rumors of discontent in Detroit already. There was a report yesterday that Matt Patricia is constantly late for team meetings ( https://sports.yahoo.com/report-matt-pat...-021749775.html) and he seems overall to be a curmudgeon. I don't think he'll be fired, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he is. Giants - Pat Shurmur - Safe Eagles - Doug Pederson - Safe Cowboys - Jason Garrett - Safe Washington - Jay Gruden - Seems to be safe, but you never know with Daniel Snyder. They just whacked the entire business side of the team the other day ( https://sports.yahoo.com/redskins-hired-...-203205803.html) and they hadn't even been with the team a year. The Redskins are the Browns with only a little bit more success. Saints - Sean Payton - Safe Falcons - Dan Quinn - Seems to be safe, but the team underperformed so much that I wouldn't be surprised if he was fired. Panthers - Ron Rivera - The chair is wobbly. New owner who is rumored to want his own people ( https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/panth...sing-continues/). Buccaneers - Dirk Koetter - I would say he's gone, but there hasn't been much smoke. This team looks like it will need a full rebuild. Rams - Sean McVay - Safe 49ers - Kyle Shanahan - Safe Seahawks - Pete Carroll - Safe Cardinals - Steve Wilks - As good as done ( https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/cardi...ust-one-season/). This team probably needs a total rebuild. There are rumors of them being interested in Todd Bowles, who was the DC when Arians was the head coach ( https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/todd-...al-possibility/). If we don't retain Kitchens and Bowles is hired in Arizona, I'd expect Kitchens ends up there as the OC. That's five jobs that are open currently or will be within the next several days (Browns, Packers, Cardinals, Broncos, and Jets). With four others being at least 50/50 (Bengals, Panthers, Jaguars, and Buccaneers). There is also one that comes out of left field.

Pat Fitzgerald - C - Free Agent
ProFootballTalk's Mike Florio reports the Packers have been connected to Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald as a potential replacement for Mike McCarthy.
Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer also linked Fitzgerald to the Packers. Fitzgerald has strong ties to CEO Mark Murphy, who hired him back in 2006 as Northwestern's Athletic Director. Green Bay interviewed a pair of retreads in Jim Caldwell and Chuck Pagano, but neither feel like serious candidates. Fitzgerald's had NFL interest in the past but it was never enough to lure him from his alma mater. A proven track record (.576 Win Percentage) at the college level with not much left to prove, it may be time for Fitzgerald to make the jump.

It's kind of hard to. He needs to set a better example than that, especially when it comes to team meetings.
