Congrats Baker! https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2019/01/02/offensive-rookie-of-the-year-baker-mayfield/Offensive rookie of the year: Baker Mayfield Posted by Mike Florio on January 2, 2019, 1:01 PM EST He wakes up feeling dangerous, something no Browns team has been in years. But now they are, thanks to the presence of and immediate impact created by PFT 2018 offensive rookie of the year Baker Mayfield. Yes, there are other worthy contenders. Colts guard Quenton Nelson became the league’s offensive rookie of the month for October. Giants running back Saquon Barkley generated more than 2,000 yards from scrimmage. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson took Baltimore’s offense back to the future and helped secure a playoff berth. Broncos running back Phillip Lindsay became the first undrafted offensive Pro Bowler, ever. But only one rookie transformed a franchise. Only one rookie brought swagger to a team that had none of it, for decades. Only one rookie broke the rookie record for touchdown passes in a season, putting up 27 to the 26 from Peyton Manning and Russell Wilson. And that rookie didn’t even play until Week Three, when an injury to Tyrod Taylor opened the door for Mayfield to become the last name on that jersey of never-ending quarterbacks in Cleveland. Mayfield, as MDS has pointed out, performed at an MVP level late in the year. He showed moxie, he flashed an edge. He had as much Drew Brees in his game as Jim McMahon. Wherever Mayfield goes from here remains to be seen. MVP awards will be hard to win with Patrick Mahomes in the league. But Mayfield wants championships, and if the Browns hire the right coach, Mayfield could be pursuing one as soon as 2019.

While great, this is only for PFT, not the official award. Though he deserves that too.

This is a good discussion though. I was talking about this with my buddy. Barkley is the favorite and deservedly so. He had a monster year. But I think the degree of difficulty was so much higher for Baker. Running backs usually win this award because it's so much easier for them to plug into an offense and get yards. The fact that Baker took a team that had won 1 game in over two years, and nearly led them to a .500 season, speaks volumes. The Giants won what? 2 more games with Barkley? Mayfield has completely turned around a franchise and is playing like a seasoned veteran at the toughest position on the field.

As much as Florio likes picking on the Browns, it makes me assume they voted without him Or he's just a talentless bully and now that the Browns are doing well, he's heading off to pick on some other poor team.

I cannot see how you can give Barkely the award when their last 3 seasons were.
11-5 3-13 5-11
Browns and Baker: 1-15 0-16 7-8-1
and Baker plays the most important position in all of sports. I think Baker is a lock for the award. If not, add another chip to that shoulder of his.

This is the "Pro football talk" "rookie of the year" I will be happy either way. If he wins it I'll be happy for him, if he doesn't I'll be happy to watch that chip on his shoulder grow 3 sizes that day. For the record I don't expect him to win, Barkley has had the hype all season and Barkley plays in NY... yes, I think it matters. Is the Browns last (and perhaps only) ROY Chip Banks from the early 80s?

I'll be interested to see if Barkley or Baker wins it. IMO Baker should, but Barkley played all 16 and has been hyped too

I think that Baker has to win the AP award too.
He turned around a moribund franchise with his play and presence, and set an all time rookie passing record in the process. QB is the single most difficult position to play in the NFL, and along with the skill and aplomb Baker showed, his persona was even more important for getting his teammates to really buy in and believe they could win.
Barkley also had an all time great season ..... but QB is such a more difficult position for a rookie to master.

I have a hunch Baker is going to win it - he and the Browns are getting a LOT of media attention and love. We're kind of the sexy NFL story of the moment despite not making the playoffs. I expect the Browns to be one of the hot stories this off season and a lot of pundits will be picking us for division or wild card slot.
The more things change the more they stay the same.

Why should Barkley get it over Baker? What rookie records did he break? Didn't even come close to Dickerson's record.

I think there were a ton of excellent rookies this year.
Baker, Barkley, Darius Leonard and Nelson in Indy, Derwin James, both Chubbs, Ward, Phillip Lindsay, Vander Esch, Roquan Smith, etc...
Add to that several other guys and the RBs who got dinged p and missed some time and you have one of the best rookie classes I have ever seen.
I think a real case can be made for Leonard, but he won't get it. I think either Baker or Barkley will win the award. A strong case can be made for both.

There are both Offensive and Defnsive Rookie of the Year awards. I don't think Leonard will get OROTY, but he has a real chance to win DROTY (him or Derwin James). Sorry, just messing with ya!

Why should Barkley get it over Baker? What rookie records did he break? Didn't even come close to Dickerson's record. Cause he is not a Brown and this will get much more attention then if he went with the crowd and stated Baker.
This is still a QB driven League, Running by committee or a great RB its the QB that makes it go. He is by far the best RB to come out in a long time. But rookies do excellent in that position its the EASIEST POSITION TO TRANSITION INTO THE NFL...bar none.
QB meanwhile is the hardest. Baker broke the rookie TD record while having way less INTs then the top candidates.
He as mentioned had the biggest positive effect on the team than any rookie player this season and well possibly of all seasons.

I agree and mentioned it earlier. There's the "difficulty factor" that QB's have to overcome that makes it the most difficult position to transfer to from the NCAA to the NFL.
Baker deserves the award bar none, but somehow I feel he will get slighted.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

There are a number of good candidates as Vers mentioned that had great seasons.
It will though come down to Baker and Barkley and a strong case can be made for both.
If I had a vote though I would have to go with Baker. Not only did he have the stats but he led a team. That is the difference in my mind. Barkley didn't have to do that.
Baker took over the job from Tyrod and didn't give it back. Then when the coaching change happened instead of being handicapped he took off. He clearly was the driving force. He transformed an offense that could not score into one that could.
Barkley had a great statistical season. Baker led a team.

I agree.
I'd also say that no other rookie QB was in the same class as Baker. Chubb and Lindsay are absolutely in the same class as Barkley.

I agree.
I'd also say that no other rookie QB was in the same class as Baker. Chubb and Lindsay are absolutely in the same class as Barkley. Maybe... Baker led every other QB by a comfortable margin in every QB statistic.. Lindsay and Chubb were not far behind Barkley in rushing stats.. but Barkley had the 3rd most receiving yards of any rookie (including WRs and TEs).. that's insane. Whichever one wins (I still think it will be Barkley) they will deserve it.

Baker will get 9 out of 10 of my votes, but what a season Chubb compiled too! He didn't get more than 3 carries a game until Week 7, yet still almost put up identical numbers to Phillip Lindsay.

Mayfield should win it.
I get that there will be a push for Saquon Barkley, and yes, he's been great, but Baker Mayfield took a winless team and damn near got them into the playoffs.
And I am in no way saying Philip Lindsay is better than Saquon Barkley, but his numbers are actually pretty comparable, with Barkley having 500 more receiving yards. Lindsay had a better average, and his rushing numbers are pretty simillar with less carries...
Again, you'd be a fool to take Lindsay above Barkley, but I thought Baker Mayfield, playing the most important position on the field, separated himself from the rest of his counterparts this year.
I don't care that much about personal awards. I tried not getting into the ridiculousness of any MVP conversation (in any sport). It's a dumb award that doesn't really matter at the end of the day. If Barkley played for a team not in New York, this probably isn't even a conversation.
Was awesome that we had 3 different guys win some form of rookie of the week multiple times all year. Pretty awesome. It's a draft we will all look back on and smile.

The FIRING OF HUE JACKSON was the turning point. With other coach we wouldn't be winless last year, and we would probably be in the playoffs this year. Yes BM did a great job and looks good, but the whole team has been pushed up and its playing at a different level. Specially in the running game.

Gregg Williams: Coach of the Year! If Greg Williams can do what he did with this team, imagine a good coach.... Time for the HUE is a great coach crowd to eat the crow and show some humility and dignity and admit THEY WERE WRONG. Hue was/is the worst coach in NFL history Yes BM is a good QB, and yes Haley was a good OC, and yes we finally have a running game. And we have DORSEY...

You do realize that the good OC was Kitchens not Haley, do you follow the team? btw Haley sucked.

You do realize that the good OC was Kitchens not Haley, do you follow the team? btw Haley sucked. You are the one who forget that IT WAS HALEY that built the Offense. That we were scoring 21 points with him in average, best since 2007 with the Browns and miles better than HUE, the wonder OC in your expert opinion. It was also with Haley that we made the running game happen, which was/is instrumental for our success. Also you forget it that Haley the OC against Pitt and the Saints, only when HUE tried to throw him under the bus he lost command of our O, with the results we saw. HALEY has been to several playoffs, and nothing that he has done here shows that he was a bad OC. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE ON THE LONG BOOK OF HUE's BAKERS EXCUSES, just stop it already. The whole team is performing at another level, this is not the case of a change of QB's. HUE STUNK and it showed in all aspects of the game. And by the way, PLAYERS ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE THEY HATED THE GUY, so not even that was true.

I was wrong many times, namely with DORSEY which I thought was a smart ass, I gladly admit it.
