I see this brought up time to time so I thought I make a post to clear up confusion regarding hiring assistant coaches and the way NFL teams can hire coaches from other teams.
Per NFL Rules
LATERAL OPPORTUNITIES
Assistant coach to Non Head Coach opportunities
Note: “promotions” to coordinator level are NOT promotions under this policy; a coach is either an Assistant Coach or a Head Coach, period.
Teams retain exclusive rights to an Assistant Coach who just completed the final season under contract until:
The Tuesday following 15 days after the final Monday Night Football game of the regular season, if the Assistant Coaches team is not in the playoffs
The 3rd Tuesday after the Assistant Coaches final playoff game (including Super Bowl), but in no event later than the expiration date in the coaches contract.
This 3 week exclusivity period CAN be waived by the coach’s team.
Coaches Not Under Written Contract:
If an Assistant Coach is working without a contract in effect (i.e., hasn’t yet signed his deal, his old deal lapsed, no new deal reached, but he’s still working for the club), permission MUST be granted even if coach continues to be paid on a non contract basis, and even if it is after March 1st.
Any Assistant Coach not under contract by the time preseason training camp begins is not permitted to participate until his written contract is signed and approved by the League office.
So assistant coaches in the NFL cannot leave their team unless granted permission or following the expiration of their contracts unless they are hiring for HEAD COACHING POSITIONS https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/41pu3t/nfl_rules_regarding_hiring_assistant_coaches_to/

Why can't i vote for Williams
The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

Why can't i vote for Williams Because there is already a poll with just him and most people want him back. Also, it seems like he is not going to get the permanent job.

I don't know if you missed it, but I made a poll earlier in the week. Gregg Williams got the overwhelming majority of the votes. https://www.dawgtalkers.net/ubbthreads.php/topics/1577463/head-coach#Post1577463I thought a new poll would be a good idea because 1) Gregg Williams doesn't seem like he is going to get the job 2) We already know that most people want Williams back, so I thought it might be interesting to see who their second choice would be. I am sorry if you think it is slanted.

I didn't vote because I was defending Freddie Kitchen's honor, so yes, please make a new poll.

I'm sorry. I haven't read the polls. I was just being snarky. I guess I was a bit irritated that a poster was trying to hijack my thread pretending I don't have common sense when I say that Dorsey has done a better job than Sashi at building our roster.
As far as the poll goes, I personally think all viable candidates should be included, but it's not really a big deal. So.........my apologies for being snarky.

Any word on if we are going to interview Vic Fangio DC Bears? We haven’t requested an interview and I haven’t seen us connected to him. If we want a younger coach, and given the list of candidates we have seen so far I think we do, I don’t think he’ll get an interview.

Any word on if we are going to interview Vic Fangio DC Bears? I hope so. I wanted us to interview him the last time we had a coaching search.

No thanks. It wasn't the D that missed the FG...

really.
it was the D that allowed them to come down the field and score the go-ahead TD. no FG needed if D steps up.

Not trying to argue. I just don't think it's quite right to blame the DC for this loss.

Hammer...That D put a young QB in a position to succeed.. That D didn't allow Philly to run away and put lots of points on the board..
If the FG kicker hits the second try..there's no mention of the D..

Just don't think Fangio is all that - imo.

Not being high on Fangio because of your overall impression of him is certainly reasonable. Not wanting him because of one drive isn't.
Anything specific about him that you don't like? Or is it just an overall "eh" feeling about him.

Vic is quite known for turning poor defenses around. Last night wasn't about that..it was about that offense not being able to score

It's interesting to me that Andrew Berry is part of the search committee and Alonzo Highsmith is not. Both are vice presidents of player personnel, but Berry is one of the holdovers that Haslam insisted on keeping from the Sashi regime.

A lot of personnel guys get the boot when a new regime comes in. Not only was he kept, but it seems like he has more responsibilities.

I find it odd that JW Johnson's name is on that list. I don't. He's a fly on the wall, sitting on his hands. He has no impact on a decision, he's just there to see the process. I'm sure a lot of people will try to read something into it (not saying you are) because he's the son-in-law. If he wasn't, I don't think it would solicit anything more than a "hmmm".

That's the thing. And I understand it, but it's usually not very accurate. We all have some type of preconceived notion of how things transpire with our team. As such, we tend to look at articles, ideas and rumors that reinforce our beliefs.
I hadn't seen that printed anywhere either. Not saying it wasn't.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I would imagine Highsmith is probably gearing up for his own interviews. He is a name always being floated as the next great GM.

Both are vice presidents of player personnel, but Berry is one of the holdovers that Haslam insisted on keeping from the Sashi regime. Haslam insisted on keeping Berry? I didn't know that. Never remember seeing that written or said before... Perhaps a fairer characterization would have been "reportedly preferred to retain" instead of insist, but there were rumblings of Haslam personally sparing DePodesta and Berry around the time of Dorsey's hire. Relevant snippet from MKC's article at the time: DePodesta reports directly to Haslam, and Dorsey wouldn't have the authority to fire him. The Browns also like Vice President of Player Personnel Andrew Berry, and he will likely remain in that capacity.
Dorsey, however, will have the opportunity to hire and fire others in the personnel department. Now, MKC also talks about Dorsey and DePodesta getting to know each other, so it's possible that was the case with Berry, too. Maybe he came to his own conclusion that Berry is an up-and-comer and wanted him to remain in the role. I've heard about him as a rising star, and Dorsey made the decision to keep other people in the personnel department, like director of scouting Mike Cetta and director of pro scouting Dan Saganey, for example. Or maybe Dorsey wanted to jettison the highest-ranking personnel holdover of a front office that "didn't get real players", but couldn't because of Haslam's noted support. Personally, I don't know. Regardless, I was more interested in the news that Berry sits above Highsmith, one of Dorsey's handpicked lieutenants. Either way, I believe the Browns finally have one of the strongest front offices in the league, and Berry is a big part of that, so.

Jake Burns ‏ @jake_burns18 Jan 2 More Linebacker is a point of contention for the #Browns this off-season. Glad to hear this news concerning our LBs..Since Dorsey was a LB, I'm sure he recognized the need for an upgrade at LB.
