President Trump made the remark during a lengthy appearance in the White House’s Rose Garden on Friday, in the midst of an extended soliloquy about the border wall that he has yet to find funding or widespread political support for.

The government is shut down over the president’s demand that Congress allocate $5.7 billion for the wall.

“This should have been done by all of the presidents that preceded me,” Trump said. “And they all know it. Some of them have told me that we should have done it.”

The president has made 7,600 false or misleading statements since he became president, and some have proved more difficult than others to fact-check. This one was not. There are only four living ex-presidents. The Washington Post reached out to them to see whether they ever told Trump that a border wall should have been built before he was in office: All said they hadn’t. A spokesman for former president George H.W. Bush declined to comment, saying it was too soon for Bush, who died in November, to be “dragged into such debates."

Last month, President Trump also claimed that former president Ronald Reagan, who died 15 years ago, tried and failed to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border. Former administration officials told The Washington Post they could not recall a border wall ever being discussed.

Vice President Pence was asked on the “Today” show Tuesday morning which previous presidents had told President Trump they wanted to build a wall. Pence did not give a direct answer.

“I know the president has said that that’s what his impression from previous administrations, from previous presidents,” Pence said. “I know I’ve seen clips of previous presidents talking about the importance of border security, the importance of addressing the issue of illegal immigration.”

“That’s different from telling the president though, right?” asked NBC reporter Hallie Jackson.

“You know, honestly,” Pence said, “the American people want us to address this issue.”

Eric Schultz, a spokesman for former president Barack Obama, pointed to past remarks in which Obama spoke critically about Trump’s idea for the wall.

“Suggesting that we can build an endless wall along our borders, and blame our challenges on immigrants — that doesn’t just run counter to our history as the world’s melting pot; it contradicts the evidence that our growth and our innovation and our dynamism has always been spurred by our ability to attract strivers from every corner of the globe,” Obama said at Rutgers University in 2016. “That’s how we became America. Why would we want to stop it now?”

It is true that border walls hold a special place in former president George W. Bush’s legacy. The Secure Fence Act, which he signed into law, paved the way for 700 miles of fences along stretches of the border. But spokesman Freddy Ford told reporters that Bush had not discussed the wall with Trump.

Angel Urena, a spokesman for former president Bill Clinton, said Clinton had never told Trump that a border wall should have been built.

“He has not,” Urena said. “In fact, they’ve not talked since the inauguration.”

Former president Jimmy Carter has been known as a humanitarian in the more than 35 years since he was president. On Monday, the Carter Center, his nonprofit at Emory University, released a statement from him saying he had never spoken to Trump about the issue — nor would he have encouraged him on the wall if he had.

“I have not discussed the border wall with President Trump, and do not support him on the issue,” Carter said in the statement.

None of them, former Reagan staffers told The Post, involved a physical border wall — which contrasts with President Trump’s characterization of Reagan’s policies. “Even President Ronald Reagan tried for 8 years to build a Border Wall, or Fence, and was unable to do so,” the president wrote in a tweet Dec. 21, 2018. “Others also have tried. We will get it done, one way or the other!”

“There was not any discussion at the senior policy levels during the Reagan administration about fencing or a wall that I can recall,” Doris Meissner, who was executive associate commissioner of the Immigration and Naturalization Service during the Reagan administration, wrote in an email.

It only makes sense that if you wish to convince people of your stand on a border wall to make it more popular among the people, that making up consistent lies about it will only hurt your cause. But common sense has no place in this administration.

Even if it were true, like they are going to admit it after he blurted out what was said in private.

it'd be a lot easier to take the cons seriously if they wanted a border wall along canada, but since they don't, we already know the wall this is less about security and more about symbolism.

Yeah, I pointed those statistics out in a different thread earlier.

But in today's political climate it doesn't seem that facts matter much to some.

I mean let's just take Syria for example.

First it was, "We defeated ISIS and our troops will be out of Syria in 30 days".

Next is was, "They can fight ISIS and we'll be out in 120 days".

Then it was, "We'll set conditions for withdraw and leave when ISIS is defeated".

So in the end, we're exactly where we started at. It went from ISIS is defeated, to we'll let them fight ISIS, to, we'll leave when ISIS is defeated.

It went from 30 days, to 120 days, to we have no idea.

And have you noticed? Those on the right were applauding when Trump said the troops would be out in 30 days. It's been crickets ever since he backtracked........... twice.

The only thing that was accomplished was losing a great military mind in Jim Mattis.

and thats the problem. he HAD a deal with the dems for a wall early last year, but didn't take the money cause of DACA. all he had to do was compromise with the dems with DACA and the wall was going up.

the dems and republicans had a bi-partisan deal in december that PASSED the senate for 1.3 billion for border security. so time and time again the dems have shown they are all for border security.

This time he didn’t ramble incoherently about the wall having to be see through so people wouldn’t be killed by dealers throwing sacks of drugs over it, nor did he veer off into some tangent about his depressed friend’s boat orgies, or the time he was “this close” to banging Vanna White.

If you’re his staff, you’ve got to treat him keeping focused on something for more than a minute or two to be a win.

that speech was written to be incredibly simple. not for the audience, but for him.

and its sad that we have to grade whether or not trump did well based on his own scale, and not the typical unwritten standard we would use to grade all the other presidents.

If illegal immigration was such an immediate and important issue to you, as many here have expressed, then why, exactly, did you decide to throw your weight behind the clown whose proposed solution was “we’ll build a big, beautiful wall, and Mexico will pay for it”? If it were such a serious issue that needed to be addressed immediately, then why go with the game show host who forgets where he is several times a day?

Because right now, you’re getting what you paid for.

Here is another question, Trump has the White House, Senate and House of Reps.

The House would have given him anything he wanted, The senate (trump said he needed 10 Dems to vote for it, but that's not exactly true, McConnell changed things up so a simple majority would do it)

He could have gotten the senate as well.

So, for two years, he didn't get it and then he said he'd take the mantel for the shutdown but now blames the Dems.

So the question is, why didn't get get his wall funding in the last two years?

The answer to that is pretty simple- everyone outside of Trump and the racist rubes who adore him know that the wall is completely pointless and unfeasible. The GOP led him along and used him for their waves of tax cuts and judges, thinking that they could always distract him or put it off.

On this one specific point, I beg to differ.

Speaking to reporters from his office at the Court, Kavanaugh said that the inspiration came to him while he was building a beer-can pyramid in his basement rec room on Wednesday night.

“I was in my man cave, building this rad beer pyramid, and I was, like, I bet if I recycled all the beer cans down here plus the ones out in the garage, I’d have enough to pay for that freaking wall,” the Supreme Court Justice said.

He added that he started calling a number of his friends from Georgetown Prep to see if they would contribute their empties to the effort, and found that they were “totally stoked” about the idea.

“P.J., Tobin, and Squee are all in,” he said. “This wall is gonna freaking rule.”
