Only the Browns will take what has been a great turn around and screw it up by changing it right now.

I am less than impressed with candidates and I'm really not happy if it is Kitchens as HC, or Stefanski for that matter.. I get being a young coordinator, but you're going to give the most important job to one that hasn't done any playcalling for a full season. If it isn't Williams I rather have Campbell or Eberflus

If someone else besides Williams or Kitchens is named head coach I will be livid. The announcement should happen pretty soon I hope. Wonder what's taking so long. I'm getting anxious!

Considering all the people that were livid after the draft because Dorsey select Baker and Ward ... Dorsey could name me Head Coach, and I'll just shrug my shoulders and figure he knows something the rest of us don't.

My hope would be Dan Campbell as HC who chooses to retain Fred Kitchens as OC and Gregg Williams as DC. Find a good STC.

Yeah, I'm hoping for the least amount of turn-over possible. Even if Kitchens is given the HC role, I hope he retains Williams as DC.

Just my thoughts but the DC's connected to Kitchens that aren't named Williams run entirely different defenses.

If GW does leave and BW was offered a DC job he'd be an idiot not to take it and I think his dad would tell him that as well.

GW or Freddy both know they would get coordinator offers tomorrow if they walked away today, but they also both know it won't be with a team that has the same young talent and upside as this one. Both may be inclined to stay if the other is made coach or if a coach is hired from the outside. They will be prime candidates for HC offers from other teams next year if stay right where they are at.

GW might embrace the temporary HC offer if he gets another year or maybe even two to groom his son as DC. Freddy may embrace the same deal as temp OC knowing that he'll get the team as these young players hit their prime.

I have no clue which direction they are going, but a lot of people here are making assumptions by writing off options that all seem viable to me.

I agree. Heck, Bill Cower had no head coaching experience before he became Steeler coach, and that was a good while ago.

Freddie has been grooming in the league for a long time. He was worked for some great coaches. He watched and learned.

Sure, he is going to have to grow once in the position, but what coach doesn't?

As Dorsey said, this is about the long term benefit to the team.

For any who question: Why can't Freddie be a dynamic head coach in the NFL??

I like the idea of Freddie as HC. But I say that by emphasizing "like the idea". What I have no way of knowing is how he would handle instilling discipline and overseeing the day in and day out responsibilities that go with the HC position.

I mean you never really know that when you hire someone that has never held the position so it goes without saying that it has and can be done. I think that's what the entire interview process covers when you are considering elevating any OC or DC to the HC position.

It would be wonderful if after the interview process they feel Freddie is up for the challenge.

The truth is that I can't answer that question without being in the interview room.

Neither can anyone else.

The OC job is a heck of a lot different than the HC job, but it would be hard to screw up the continuity on the offensive side for him. It would be his vision of the defensive side I'd be interested in.

Now GW has an easy out. All he has to say is he'd keep Freddy as OC and his son as DC. Seems like a safer choice to me. But I have a feeling Dorsey would be asking GW different questions in the interview.

I was thinking earlier after reading the coaching threads and some coaching news, and that doesn't always go well smile Here's what I was thinking...

Kitchen has already been offered the job, but has been asked to keep it quiet for a few days. Stefanski is out of contract I believe as of today, and he's being brought in to see if he'd be interested in taking the OC job here. Williams has already been asked to stay on as DC. This brings some continuity, would be pretty popular with fans (at least Kitchens & Williams), and brings another bright offensive mind in town.

Is this crazy thinking?

I think what he’s shown us in the last 8 weeks of the season is someone who is not only level headed and cool under pressure but he’s someone who prepares, as much as his QB prepares for these games. He’s taken his OC role seriously and he’s come out a winner. I’m certainly more comfortable with him takin the reins over some dude I never heard of before. At least we already know he’s good for our shiney new QB.

I came here to get a pulse on head coaching candidates and I find it mildly reassuring that most seem to have the same level of general fog and lack of clarity as I do. I have no idea. Yea, Williams and Kitchens did well but something tells me it would change if they were given the full time gig in the same roles. Something feels Holcolm, Anderson-esque about that tandem. Great in relief but once given the reigns permanently.. down the crapper. As far as Kitchens as HC...? Sheesh, he doesn't really impress me. But.. I don't really know. Fact is, I don't really know with any of them. I'm not in the room, I don't know people they know, I haven't watched them. And so, Dorsey. We just have to trust Dorsey and the gang. Whoever they drum up I'll support. Hell, I loved the Hugh hire 3 years ago. tongue

I don't feel any of us know what's really going on behind the scenes. Your guess is as good as any I suppose.

I really don't like these kinds of threads. I skim read them and it's hard to tell fact from fiction because so many people are stating things as facts when they really aren't.

I hope we hire someone soon just to stop all of this crap.

I don't think people should get too worked up over how much experience Kitchens has. People were up in arms about him calling plays because he had no experience doing that either. I think it turned out ok.

I don't think the exp as OC means much to me either. There are plenty of guys hired straight from jobs as position coach.

For me the scary thing is the street cred that he has with other coaches. I really hadn't heard of him until he got put in the role of OC and most of the guys hired as position coaches before had their names floating out there as possible HC candidates for a while.

He might have that, I don't know.

I don't think that he's about to hired from under us as an HC and we aren't allowing anyone to interview him as an OC however. Hence I really don't see why fans are in such a hurry to dump GW and elevate Kitchens and roll the dice with another DC.

It's certainly true that it's all guess work, conjecture and not much more than gossip.

But isn't that pretty much the exact same thing we go through every year during the FA signing period and draft?

It's just part of the game to me.

So who promoted Freddie....we know it was Dorsey. Maybe that was the interview?

Dorsey was around for 4-5-6 games last year, now this year. He has been talking to people, both inside and out of the team. He has been gathering info on not only other coaches, but coaches inside the building.

This is not even close to being in the realm of possibilities, but I love the thinking.

Last year when Matt Nagy got the Bears job he hired Mark Helfrich as his offensive coordinator. Helfrich was a college football lifer who worked under Chip Kelly and was the head coach at Oregon. I would love to see something similar with our OC position.

Eberflus has been a coordinator for exactly 1 season, so I wouldn't hold it against Kitchens but not against Eberflus. If Kitchens is the best guy according to Dorsey, hire him and let's go!

I'm not going to claim I know better than Dorsey; he has the information, the contacts, and the NFL experience to know way more than I do. If he recommends a candidate to JH for hiring as HC, I will accept that without trying to say it was a bad or the wrong choice.

My ill-informed opinion is Kitchens HC, Stefanski OC. I think Stefanski is returning to talk with Kitchens to make sure their philosophies mesh.

That's my factual opinion.

I have read all the posts in the coaching search and coaching news threads. There has been exactly one post that I was unclear as to whether or not it was fact or opinion. Then I went to the post he was responding to and it became blatantly clear that it was opinion. I don't understand all the issues with fact vs opinion.

It's not a big deal, but thanks for trying to make it one.

I got confused a couple of times because I read something that was stated as a fact and then later in the thread I would see contrary information. I wasn't making a big deal out of it. Just mentioning it.
