Jester don't confuse Tampa 2 with Cover 2 man...

Just because there are two safeties deep does not automatically make it the Tampa 2 announcers get this wrong all the time.

Cover 2 man is different and there is no zone involved except with those 2 safeties. They also can blitz from any degree if a LB blitzes you can have a safety coming up to fill that LB positions responsibilities, in the NFL very few are what they appear to be.

But the True term Tampa 2:

Dungy modified the original Cover 2 in response to the West Coast Offense. The WCO (West Coast Offense) was notorious for getting receivers behind the linebackers, thus creating spots on the field that simply left people uncovered or didn't put players in a position to make a tackle. However, do we really understand what a Tampa 2 is? What kind of players does it require, and what does it require of those players? After the jump we will examine this in great detail.

One of the great things about the Tampa 2 is that there is so many coverage switches, blitzes, stunts, etc
What is a Cornerbacks responsibility in a Tampa 2? Your first inclination would be to say get a jam on the wide-receiver. This is absolutely true. If the CB does not get a jam, it makes it more difficult for Safeties to cover the field. However, maybe the most important task the cornerback has is forcing runs back inside. If the WR is able to block the cornerback with his back to the sideline, you can COUNT on a 15 yard run. One of the reasons for the success of the Tampa2 is the opportunistic approach. Corner backs are litterally sitting down in the zone and have the freedom to use the sideline to jump routes. CB's in the T2 love to keep everything to the sideline. It benefits the rest of the defense. Ronde Barber is also the most successful blitzing cornerback in the history of the NFL. He has recorded 25 sacks (9.5 more than any other cornerback). He also is one of only 2 players to have 20 sacks and 30 interceptions, the other is Rodney Harrison. Ronde Barber is a future Hall of Famer and owes much credit to a defense that highlights his strengths and a DC who was aggressive enough to blitz him.

Lastly, the safeties. Most defensive coaches will say the most athletic person on a football field at all times is the safety. I'm a defensive minded guy, so I would probably agree with that statement. In a T2 it is no different. The safeties responsibility is deep halves. They have to be able to see the entire field and know who is becoming their responsibility. One of the easiest ways to beat a C2 or T2 is to overwhelm the safeties by flooding their zones. Corners and LB's are expected to help when they recognize this, but it's not always the case. Safeties also are asked to rotate on corner blitzes, walk up in the box (disguised as a Cover 2 initially) and the FS is often the on-field coordinator of the coverages (I believe Lynch actually took coverage responsibilities when he was in Tampa). Here is a video on how Safeties are often asked to play the 2.

I think the biggest difference from Tampa 2 And cover 2 man is that in the Tampa 2 the MLB (mike) will drop back deep in the middle giving them in passing plays a deep 3.

There is no determent for an aggresive D to come out of the Tampa 2 just that rarely would an aggressive DC utilize that as their base D.

Its good for a team who has been running it for years and have the discipline for the passing game. The Tampa 2 was conceived to stop the WCO that was going wild since Walsh utilized it and made it famous (of course tweaking the Paul Brown concept)

So you can call it what ever you want. Now a days its not what it would have been when initially used - You can become attack in any formation.

The key to me is 4-3 studs have to be in the DL. 3-4 studs have to be in the LB...we are way way off in 3-4 personnel.

As for bend not break that mentality would want to utilize the Tampa 2 but as stated its the individual DC who will decide what it is. Tampa 2 is the best designed D for a bend but don't break philosophy and why I stated what I stated. You can go attack in it if you wish but its not the best D to do so.

Also personnel is different. Attack 4-3 which we have been in is to commit one of the safeties up tight for a blitz or RB coverage or for that matter a mirror on the QB attacking the gaps to provide pressure and you need hard core man CBs.

Well I hope this will lead to more discussion...have had it.

My reply was about about Thick choosing his own coaches.
It was more about people insinuating Dorsey just hired him without no more than just looking at his 8 game performance.
I was pretty much saying in so many words that I'm pretty sure Thick had a outstanding interview and had his self prepared to impress and did.
He earned the job by more than just what he did as the offensive coordinator.

What's holding up the official announcement that kitchens has been hired?

Does anybody know when an official presser with Dorsey & Kitchens will be? Assuming they are waiting until the top vacancies in the coaching team are filled.

I sure hope Kitchens works out as head coach. Way different than what he's used to doing.
He does need some good assistants that he can lean on.
Having our QB and several other pieces in place along with being Dorsey's pick will surely help while Freddie learns the ropes as head coach.
This offseason will be quite different for us Browns fans. We have our QB and a new head coach along with big expectations for next year.
It hasn't been that way for a long time.

I just want a winner. We need players who can be part of the solution not part of the problem.

It's been reported we have hired our ST Coach and DC but no word on an OC yet. Maybe that's the hold up.

https://www.clevelandbrowns.com/news/freddie-kitchens-named-browns-head-coach

The Browns on Saturday named Freddie Kitchens, a 13-year NFL coaching veteran who helped turn around Cleveland’s 2018 season after taking over as offensive coordinator, the team’s 17th full-time head coach.
Kitchens, 44, takes over following a year in which he began as the Browns’ associate head coach/running backs coach and finished as the coordinator of one of the league’s most improved offenses over the second half of the season.
“We are thrilled to announce Freddie Kitchens as the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns,” Dee and Jimmy Haslam said. “He did an outstanding job in his role as coordinator, and we know that will continue as he steps into the role of head coach. Freddie demonstrated all of the qualities that you want in someone who is leading your organization. He has unquestioned leadership. He is a man of integrity. He fosters a collaborative environment. He gets the most out of his players and our players loved playing for him. We are happy to have him leading the Cleveland Browns going forward.”

Wonder what they will be saying in a year or two?
