Texans release McCardell, Stanley, 18 others Associated Press
HOUSTON -- The Houston Texans released 20 players on Friday, including Keenan McCardell and Chad Stanley, the only punter in franchise history.
The Texans must release two more players to get to the league-mandated 53-player limit by 5 p.m. Saturday.
......... The Texans also released second-year running back Wali Lundy, a starter a year ago. Houston signed Ahman Green in the off-season and has 1999 Heisman Trophy winner Ron Dayne and Samkon Gado.
Jonathan Ferrey / Getty Images Jared Zabransky led Boise State to a wild overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.
"Samkon has had an excellent off-season," Kubiak said. "Wali improved, but I think the whole group improved and it was a tough call between him and Samkon and we felt like Samkon has won that position. It was very difficult to let Wali go."
Others cut on Friday were center Drew Hodgdon, guard Mike Brisiel, receivers Bethel Johnson and David Anderson, quarterback Jared Zabransky, running back Darius Walker, fullback Jon Abbate, tackle Brandon Frye, defensive backs John Walker, Ty Poole, Dexter McCleon and Brandon Mitchell, defensive linemen Alfred Malone, DelJuan Robinson, Tim Bulman and Victor DeGrate and linebacker Trent Bray. http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d801fb3c0&template=with-video&confirm=true

During the Bears broadcast, Kosar said he expected the Browns to sign a WR after the cuts. I wonder if McCardell has any gas left in the tank? I always thought he was pretty clutch.

TEXANS: Released center Drew Hodgdon, guard Mike Brisiel, wide receivers Bethel Johnson, Keenan McCardell, and David Anderson fullback Jon Abbate, quarterback Jared Zabransky, running backs Darius Walker and Wali Lundy, tackle Brandon Frye, defensive ends Alfred Malone, DelJuan Robinson, and Victor Degrate, linebacker Trent Bray, safeties Brandon Mitchell and John Walker, cornerbacks Tyrone Poole and Dexter McCleon, defensive tackle Tim Bulman, and punter Chad Stanley.

This didn't get each to the 53 man limit; SD & SF still have a few more to go I believe.
Statistics are like a bikini; what they show is interesting, but what they hide is vital. Drive for show (1st round), Putt for dough (rest of draft).

I know it's been discussed on another thread, but I'd like to see McCardell back in Cleveland also.
It's nice to know that we can still bolster our team for the season without being too worried about big gaping holes(DL not included )

It seems like McCardell has been around forever because he has been - he's 37, so this might be the end of the line for him. I was thinking he was 34 or so, until I looked up his player page.

He was pretty decent from what I remember in New England, but after he left, I didn't hear much about him.

I'm sure he's lost a step or two but he can still run nice routes and can catch the ball,....for the right price he could be a productive #3 WR. IMO

That's what I was thinking.
Bethel Johnson is hella fast and good in the slot. Great on the deep route. He always has been thought of as an underachiever, at least in NE he was. But may be we could use him. God knows our recievers suck

Bethal is super fast. From what i have heard he isn't the best route runner. (fly or nothing). If I remember right his hands were so so. He also gets dinged up easily and often. He was electric on returns.
Am I perfect? No Am I trying to be a better person? Also no

Antonio Pittman cut, maybe give him a look? Reaching the NFL-mandated active roster limit of 53, the New Orleans Saints waived 12 players Saturday and terminated the contract of defensive end Anton Palepoi, Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis announced. The 12 players waived were safety Curry Burns, guard Tim Duckworth, fullback Kevin Dudley, defensive end Willie Evans, wide receiver Tramain Hall, cornerback David Jones, linebacker Marvin Mitchell, quarterback Tyler Palko, cornerback Anwar Phillips, running back Antonio Pittman, safety Chris Reis and guard Dave Yovanovits. http://www.neworleanssaints.com/Articles/2007/9/Saints%20Set%20Roster%20at%2053.aspx

Pittman getting waived is a surprise. Not to be a OSU homer, but I thought he would be a good NFL back. However, New Orleans has a plethora of RB's so another numbers game casuality, imo.

I love Pittman. I'm not sure why NO even drafted him that high considering they already had Duece and Reggie.

I agree, I'm not even an OSU fan and I really like Pittman. I would love to give him a look, I gotta think he's better than both Wright and Harrison, but maybe not.

I'd give him a look, without a doubt. I'm not an OSU fan, but he could be a decent back-up, IMO. He's in a bit of an odd position, though. I doubt any team would want him as a #2 back, but your #3 back tends to be more of a change of pace back, which he really isn't. That being said, I'd sign him, stash him on the inactive list for a few weeks and see how Jason Wright is doing when he is playing and make a decision. I'm shocked he didn't make the roster, even at a loaded position in New Orleans.

I believe he is faster than any of our backups and is very good in open space. Cut someone and bring him in.

Count me among those that would bring Pittman in for a look in a second. Can he really be worse than anyone else we'd consider for depth?

Pittman got cut, damn. That's surprising considering where he was drafted but I'm not at all surprised cuz I didn't think he was that good anyway. He got his yards and all but there was nothing special about his power or footwork.
The coaching staff wanted to play Wells over Pittman but kept playing the veteran (and I'm not stirring crap when I say that...just trust me on this one).
Now, Wells is a real deal back, IMO, even though he didn't look that great today.

I think it was obvious to everyone, including Pittman. Why else did he come out early? He was not going to go in the first round and he knew it. He does not possess great power but is very fast with quick moves and won't usually be brought down with arm tackles.

Pittman was a decent college back who generated way more fan support than was warranted as it translates to NFL potential.

When I first glanced at this, I thought it was a joke about their new mascot Steely McBeam. Why would they cut their rookie mascot? I know alot of Steeler fans that wish they did cut McBeam.

Pittman was thoroughly outplayed by another rookie (none other than Illinois' Pierre Thomas) during camp and pre-season from what I've read. If he can't beat out a guy like that, I'm not sure he's worth a look.
